Here is some news that will definitely excite those of you running an outdated version of the Android OS on your handset.  The guys over at AndroidandMe are reporting that ALL U.S Android handsets will get an update to Android 2.1.  But there’s a catch!  Processor speeds will prevent all of them from receiving every single feature that is present on the Nexus One, such as live wallpapers.  Nonetheless, the handset will have the Android 2.1 firmware.

Additionally, select Android phones will require a wipe when they are upgraded to Android 2.1, and some will have to do a PC install for the upgrade.  U.S carriers and Android handset manufacturers are currently working out the details of the 2.1 upgrade and deciding whether or not to send out the update via an OTA or make users upgrade using a PC.  If the update were to be installed from a PC, there would most likely be an application included to backup all the content on your Android handset.  AndroidandMe also claims  that all of this is set to take place in Q2 (April/May/June) of this year with the G1 and the myTouch the initial two first-gen handsets to get Android 2.1.  Until we have further confirmation, this is going under the rumors column for now!

Our heartfelt condolences to all of you who wanted the myTouch 3G w/3.5 mm jack. If you’ve been yearning to get your hands on the new myTouch, sadly you will have to wait until the spring season. Due to a low inventory, T-Mobile is temporarily removing the device from the Handset Upgrade program. If you can’t wait until mid-March, consider looking for T-Mobile stores that might have some leftovers. If all else fails, you’ll be sure to find a cheap one on eBay.

Okay so we’re literally hours away from the myTouch 1.2 (myTouch 3G w/3.5mm jack) availability on T-Mobile’s site, although you could head down to your local T-Mobile retail store and pick it up right now. Above you will see the pricing of the myTouch 1.2. As stated previously, the handset is set to launch today, February 10th, and will be available for $149.99 with a 2 year contract or $249.99 with a 1 year contract. While updates are always welcome, unfortunately this is not the update that MyTouch 3G owners have been patiently waiting for. Android 1.6 update DMD64 OTA goes out tonight and merely “improves MyTouch user’s call performance.” No additional features are available here so it’s fairly minor but hey, improving call quality never hurts right? For the record, those picking up the MyTouch 1.2 later today will already have this update preinstalled so no need to wait patiently for this one.

Receive the update notification, install now or install later. Device reboots and boom, improved call quality. Get it, got it, good.

Thanks to one of our oh so trusty tipsters, we now have exclusive pics of the upcoming myTouch 1.2 aka “myTouch with a 3.5mm jack”, although it looks exactly the same as the original myTouch 3G, with the exception of the 3.5mm jack.  The device (like we told you) will be launching tomorrow Wednesday, February 10th. As stated before, the myTouch 1.2 will include a 3.5mm headphone jack, Swype right out of the box, an extra memory boost (256MB RAM) and the new myTouch will also come pre-installed with an 8GB microSD memory card. Remember back in early January, when we were the first to inform you about the myTouch 1.2 and its release date which our sources claimed to be February 10th? Now, thanks to one of our trusty tipsters, T-Mobile has confirmed the existence of the myTouch 1.2 via their internal systems. Additionally, T-Mobile also states the reason as to why the myTouch 3G (Black) and myTouch Fender LE were removed from the Care Upgrade Program. The inventory levels on the myTouch 3G (Black) were limited in order to prepare for the myTouch 3G “refresh”. And it looks like the Fender Edition did sell out, because of the “high demand” and partly because of the limited quantity. The new myTouch 3G with 3.5mm headphone jack is scheduled to release February 10th (just like we told you), and it will replace the original myTouch 3G (Black and white models). T-Mobile states that there will be a “limited supply,” so it looks like T-Mobile isn’t expecting a whole lot of sales to come from the new myTouch 1.2, and quite frankly I don’t see this device selling out. Let me first say that I actually like the name MyTouch 3G+ significantly more than I like MyTouch 3G 1.2. I do not know if MyTouch 1.2 is the actual name T-Mobile will be giving to the MyTouch 3G upgrade but let me just go on record saying version “1.2” is awful. If Palm could throw in the Palm Pre Plus for Verizon, T-Mobile can drop the MyTouch 3G+ for themselves. Imagine telling someone you just bought the MyTouch 1.2, who would understand that? Now imagine telling someone you just bought the MyTouch 3G Plus, that just sounds a whole lot cooler. Regardless, Best Buy thanks to our tipster is showing off this baby for a 2/28 launch, admittedly though Best Buy has been known to launch T-Mobile devices a week or two after they launch through official channels.

Well it’s not like the MyTouch 1.2 is going to come as any surprise to people but the clock is running down on the current MyTouch3G line. As the accessories start rolling in, the phones can’t be far behind. All signs point to a February 10^th date and as the Black MyTouch3G suddenly appears sold out; things are looking up for those who have been waiting for a MyTouch with a 3.5 mm headset jack. Any day now!

One of our sources hit us up today with the image above. Apparently, the MyTouch Fender Limited Edition will no longer be available for existing customers that want to upgrade to the handset. Additionally, the original MyTouch 3G in the shade of black, will no longer be available for upgrade either. Our sources are claiming that the reason for the Fender LE removal is because the handset is out of stock in the warehouse. Did the MyTouch 3G Fender really sell out that quickly? I’m not a big fan of Eric Clapton, but the Fender Edition definitely looks sick! Also could the removal of these handsets have something to do with the upcoming MyTouch 1.2, slated for a February 10th release?

Update: As it turns out, these are from a live eBay auction so if you really want to own this device 3 weeks early, hit the link!

Well perhaps its just 5:30 in the morning and I’m not quite sure what’s going on but the overnight was good enough to grace me with purported images of the MyTouch V1.2. Looking almost exactly like the old one (as expected) the only noticeable addition here is the placement of the 3.5 mm headset jack on the top just like the Fender LE edition. That’s really about it as the second image of just the back shows no distinguishable markings that separate it from the looks of original MyTouch3G. Actually we take that back, like the Fender LE, it’s possible this MyTouch also has the reported additional on board ram for some extra juice and multitasking horsepower. So if you’ve been holding off for this long on buying the MyTouch3G because of a lack of a 3.5 mm handset, your prayers have been answered.

Really, while the addition of a 3.5 mm headset jack is nice, it’s what should have been from the onset of the device itself so let’s talk when you add a Qwerty keyboard to the device, mmmkay?
