Motorola Acknowledges Cliq Update Fiasco

photo 3_wm

Well, folks, it seems that the Motorola is finally acknowledging the issues that the Cliq 1.3.18 update (you know, the one that transformed Cliqs into bricks) caused users.  In a statement made to the blog These Are The Droids, Motorola said:

Last week, the CLIQ 1.3.18 over-the-air software update began rolling out to consumers.  While the vast majority of updates were successful, a very small number of consumers reported a date error and found that, after factory resetting their device, their phone was not functioning properly. We have identified a workaround solution for these consumers, which can be found on the Motorola support forum (http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/us/support/tmo/index.html).

To our consumers, we apologize and are working swiftly to reconcile the situation. We are also revising the over-the-air software update so that this workaround solution is no longer needed. Consumers will be notified on their device when the revised update is available.

If you would like to provide more guidance to your readers, below is additional information for consumers:

To our consumers who downloaded the update and their device is working properly, no further action is needed. To our consumers who never received a notification to download the update, please do not take further action. You will be notified on your device when the revised update is available to you. To consumers who received an error or whose device date reads December 31, 1969, please visit the support site listed above for assistance.

Good to see Motorola reaching out to their customers.  Let us know how the workaround works!

All U.S Android Handsets To Get 2.1 Goodness?

google-android-2-1-sdk

Here is some news that will definitely excite those of you running an outdated version of the Android OS on your handset.  The guys over at AndroidandMe are reporting that ALL U.S Android handsets will get an update to Android 2.1.  But there’s a catch!  Processor speeds will prevent all of them from receiving every single feature that is present on the Nexus One, such as live wallpapers.  Nonetheless, the handset will have the Android 2.1 firmware.

Additionally, select Android phones will require a wipe when they are upgraded to Android 2.1, and some will have to do a PC install for the upgrade.  U.S carriers and Android handset manufacturers are currently working out the details of the 2.1 upgrade and deciding whether or not to send out the update via an OTA or make users upgrade using a PC.  If the update were to be installed from a PC, there would most likely be an application included to backup all the content on your Android handset.  AndroidandMe also claims  that all of this is set to take place in Q2 (April/May/June) of this year with the G1 and the myTouch the initial two first-gen handsets to get Android 2.1.  Until we have further confirmation, this is going under the rumors column for now!

CLIQ Succumbs To Firmware Downfall

funny-pictures-cat-moon

If you haven’t gotten around to downloading the new firmware 1.3.18, STOP!  As the old saying goes, ” if it ain’t broke…don’t fix it”.  In this case, if you haven’t updated yet, you may want to consider holding off.  For Motorola CLIQ users, T-Mobile has issued a warning advising users that have updated to the new firmware not to to use the MASTER RESET button (I know you want to).  It appears that ever since the intoduction of the new firmware, users have become overwhelmed, ambushed, and bombarded by freezes as long as supermarket lines, down landlines, and a host of problems that include time travel, taking users back to December 1969.  What we didn’t ask for was time travel, but the Motorola CLIQ gives it all: connectivity issues, barred access to MOTOBLUR, problems with display dimming, and keypad issues.  The guys over at Engadget suggest clearing your old messages to help with messaging problems but that’s all as far as solutions go.  For access to more solutions and how to get your life back…stay tuned to TmoNews, your number one source for all your T-Mobile needs.

Motorola Cliq Update Delayed

cliqupdate1

Update: Some users in the comments and via Twitter are reporting that if you do a manual search for updates, its available!

To say that a lot of you have been angrily awaiting the expected Motorola Cliq update this week would be putting it mildly. Frustration has turned to anger judging by the comments as Motorola Cliq fans all but demand their updates. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the Motorola OTA rollout timetable usually spanning across a number of days, there is a good reason it has yet to see appear on your phones. As it turns out there has been a slight delay, till the 22nd in fact. Counting today, that’s just four days and since you’ve waited this long for improvements, another few days really shouldn’t hurt. However, if you’ve been wondering just where the hell your update is, guess you’re waiting a little bit longer.

Motorola Confirms Enhancement Update This Week

motomobilecliqtweet

Twitter is the new place to validate old news, post new news and confirm software updates as told through this recent MotoMobile tweet. It was only last night that we hinted towards an enhancement update coming this week and now Moto has gone and confirmed exactly that. Enhancements for battery life, touchscreen and GPS aren’t exactly Android 2.1 but they’ll do for the time being. In the meantime, you can at least expect something to work better, last longer and find you faster. That’s gotta count for something.

Motorola Cliq Maintenance Update Coming This Week?

pr_moto_cliq_f2

First off, let’s all get on the same page and understand I am not talking about an Android update, but a maintenance update. Just a little over two weeks ago an “accidental” release from Motorola, designated update 1.3.8 leaked to a few Motorola Cliq users and included battery life, touchscreen, improved GPS tracking and various other bug fixes and improvements. More to the point is that a few TmoNews readers have written in stating that T-Mobile customer service has told them February 17th or 18th will see a Motorola Cliq maintenance update.  Just to reiterate, this is not Android 2.1.

While these updates are often good holdovers, we know that Cliq owners are much more interested in a concrete Android 2.1 update that might make the phone brand new all over again. For the moment though, this release will have to hold Cliq owners over until a more significant update appears but either way, it’s good to know Motorola is working to better the device for current and future owners.

CLIQ Scheduled For Android 2.1 Q2 2010

Motoplans

As you may recall, previously there was word on the interwebs that the Motorola CLIQ would be receiving Android 2.1 “sometime in March”. Motorola has put this rumor to bed once and for all with a new timeline that they’ve posted in their support forums revealing a list of future upgrades to Android 2.1 for all Motorola Android handsets. As displayed in the image above, the Motorola CLIQ is scheduled for an upgrade to Android 2.1 in the second quarter (Q2) of 2010. Quarter 2 consists of April, May, and June. So it looks like CLIQ owners will have to wait another month or two to get the awesomeness of Android 2.1. This is just another reason why I prefer plain old Android, without a proprietary interface.
