When the Moto G was announced a couple of days back, it wasn’t clear exactly which bands the device would support, or which carriers would be able to make use of it in the States. I gleaned information from GSMArena which suggested it only had GSM bands 850/900/1900/2100. And, since it has no LTE, that would mean that only areas covered by the refarmed … [read full article]

Yesterday evening an interesting story broke online regarding the FCC’s new chairman, Tom Wheeler. In an open letter to CTIA (a U.S. operator association) he stated that current plans by the organization regarding unlocking handsets are “a hollow shell” unless a further, key point is added to them. And, if CTIA doesn’t instigate more consumer friendly plans, it will step in to regulate itself: “Enough time has passed, and it is now time for the industry to … [read full article]
For almost a year, an alternative to Google Wallet, ISIS has been in beta testing mode in a select few markets. It’s carrier sponsored, which certainly explains why some of the carriers weren’t always keen on Google’s offering. Regardless, ISIS is now out of beta and can be used by anyone, providing you have a compatible NFC-equipped phone. A version of the app was released by each of the three sponsoring carriers (AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile) and … [read full article]

Earlier today Kyocera announced its latest Android-powered smartphone. But it’s a little different from its previous offerings. The Hydro XTRM (presumably pronounced “extreme”) is designed to handle all the rough and tumble you could possibly throw at it. It’s waterproof, drop-proof and shock-proof. And it’s been designed specifically with businesses in mind. Particularly businesses where more durable hardware is preferable. A run down of a few specs IP57 certified for protection against dust, and water submersion up … [read full article]
Motorola just held a relatively short launch event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It may seem like an odd location, but the device being announced makes it absolutely clear why it chose Brazil. Simply put, the market this device is aiming at is huge in South America and parts of Asia. Particularly Brazil and India. This is about nailing the sub-$200 market. Motorola believes that 500 million people will by sub-$200 devices in 2014, and it wants … [read full article]

Stealthily, in the night, Apple decided to press the “launch” button and start offering the new iPad mini with Retina up for sale. If you’re wanting to get hold of the T-Mobile flavored cellular version, the only way to … [read full article]
