VoLTE, 4G and Wideband LTE spotted in many new markets

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our regular roundup of network improvement sightings from our own readers. And as time goes on, it’s becoming evident that T-Mobile’s network expansions and upgrades are gathering speed. We’re monitoring three different upgrades at the moment. First is the VoLTE service expansion. Ever since it was first made available in T-Mobile’s home town of Seattle, it’s been popping … [read full article]

2 GIFs show T-Mobile’s LTE expansion over the past 2-3 months

As any of you regular readers will know, we’ve been keeping tabs on T-Mobile’s network expansion over the past few weeks. In the space of a couple of months, we’ve seen an increasing number of new LTE sites going live, VoLTE being activated in more locations and wideband LTE being switched on. But it’s difficult, even with those individual reports, to get a real sense of how fast T-Mo is expanding its reach. Thankfully, one of our … [read full article]

LTE going live in Taft, CA and wideband LTE spotted in Winder, GA & West Valley City, Utah

Our inbox has yet again been filled with first-time LTE sightings, wideband LTE and VoLTE spots. Neville Ray’s network team is still pushing hard to get this network as strong and quick as possible. It would make sense, given the latest phase of Uncarrier, to get the network to a competitive level. After all, there’s no point offering a 7-day test drive of your network if it’s useless. One reader got in touch from Taft, California where … [read full article]

T-Mo LTE now covers 230 million POPs

In a blog post earlier this month, T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, Neville Ray outlined plans for the company’s LTE network. As well as outlining new markets to receive 15+15MHz networks, and VoLTE, he announced that T-Mobile would have 230 million people covered by its LTE airwaves by the end of this month. Turns out, that milestone was hit last Friday. And – of course – Legere couldn’t announce it without a swipe at … [read full article]

RootMetrics: T-Mobile network best in Kansas City, fastest in Boston

There was once a time in T-Mobile’s recent history when John Legere would lambast results from RootMetrics’ network survey reports. But I have a feeling that might change soon. The company’s most recent results from some of the major metro areas are painting T-Mo in a very good light. Two separate, recently published reports suggest that T-Mobile has one of the best networks around. In Kansas City, T-Mobile’s network tied with Verizon for … [read full article]

Further T-Mo network upgrades spotted in Cleveland, Charlotte and Philadelphia

Recently the number of network upgrade notices hitting my inbox have been ridiculous. And so, providing I get sent enough, I’m going to start rounding them up once or twice per week. This week, readers have informed me of multiple VoLTE sightings, as well as 2G to 4G network upgrades and some speedier LTE. Surprisingly, a lot of them have been in North Carolina. VoLTE To kick it off, we’ve had 4 separate … [read full article]

T-Mobile still has some way to go with network coverage perception

It’s no secret that most U.S. consumers see T-Mobile as being a carrier which offers less reliable, and less expansive coverage than AT&T and Verizon. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen comments on this blog about coverage just disappearing outside metro areas. And a survey by research firm, NPD, shows that perception of T-Mo’s network is still not strong. In a survey of 2,500 wireless subscribers, T-Mobile came out … [read full article]

Samsung Galaxy S5 to get T-Mobile VoLTE software update today

Since news went official that T-Mobile was launching its VoLTE service in Seattle a few weeks back, a number of extra cities and markets have been added to the list, but only three handsets have been equipped to make use of it. Until today, only the Galaxy Note 3, LG G Flex and Galaxy Light have received the required carrier update settings via software download. Later today, T-Mo is adding the Galaxy S5 … [read full article]

T-Mobile offering to buy spectrum from smaller rivals

According to a report at NYPost, T-Mobile is putting together a back-up plan in case the merger with Sprint doesn’t go through. T-Mo has purportedly been offering to buy low-band spectrum from a number of smaller carriers to help boost its network performance in major built-up areas like New York City. Earlier this year, the company sealed a major deal to buy low-band 700MHz spectrum from Verizon. Spectrum which – as of yet … [read full article]

RootMetrics: T-Mobile joins Verizon as top Chicago carrier

T-Mobile’s network has been coming on leaps and bounds over the past year. Looking at the results discovered in the Fastest Mobile Networks report from earlier this month made the improvement incredibly clear. And not just that, we’ve been receiving news of 2G to 4G upgrades, LTE network improvements and VoLTE going live in a number of cities across the country. And slowly, but surely, RootMetrics’ own reports are starting to show the … [read full article]
