Well this is a positive step in the right direction for Google, who has faced a stream of criticism lately from upset customers regarding price/upgrade issues and 3G connectivity. Effective today, T-Mobile customers who purchased the Nexus One at the price of $379 will be refunded $100 dollars, or the difference between the $379 and $279 pricing. Refund eligible customers, or those who purchased the phone prior to today can expect to receive the refund within 14 business days. Those eligible to receive the refund will start being notified of this change starting tomorrow. It may not affect a large swath of buyers, but it’s a step in the right direction to better customer service for Google and we applaud this move.

It’s been roughly a week since Google and HTC revealed the Nexus One via press conference at their headquarters. Expectations were of course high for the Google handset, as is usually true for anything that is attached to the Google name. However, according to Mobile App Analytics over at Flurry, who are estimating (based on usage of the apps that it instruments) around 20,000 Nexus One handsets were sold in the first week of launch. Looking above you will see the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, which launched all the way back in August of 2009, sold a total of 60,000 units during its first week. Making a strong first week showing was the Verizon Wireless Motorola Droid which sold a whopping 250,000 units the first week it launched. While the infamous Apple iPhone 3GS sold an incredible 1,600,000 units during the first week it launched.
To be completely honest, I believe that due to Google imposing some tight requirements in order to get the handset subsidized, the Nexus One didn’t appeal to as many users. Even though the retail price of the handset is lower than the subsidized price in the long run, many consumers simply do not want to pay $529.99 up front. On top of that, significant confusion over the initial rate plan offering might have been a detractor to buyers. While that matter has been settled amongst the internet savvy, those looking to buy online may not be aware of how one can change plans after receiving the device. Consider for a moment the unhappy customers, those existing T-Mobile customers who discovered they would not receive any discount whatsoever on the Nexus One. Or those customers who are upgrade eligible and still find themselves in a position that requires more than the anticipated $179.99 pricing. Say what you want about the launch, it seems as though there was plenty of hiccups this time around, things that could have easily been prevented that would have allowed for higher first week sales. A lot is riding on how Google handles the 3G issues as well as various customer issues that has brought about significant talk about Google’s clear direction regarding customer service. For a company that is so entrenched in our lives, it’s certainly not easy to talk to them. Then again, that’s just my $0.02.

Okay so you finally have your brand spankin’ new Nexus One and if you were like most T-Mobile customers, you probably paid the $529.99 unlocked retail price. Of course such an expensive handset should definitely be taken extra care of. So thanks to our beloved Magenta, they are offering PHP (Premium Handset Protection) Insurance for both, customers that bought the phone through Google unlocked and customers that activated or upgraded with the subsidized $179.99 price tag. So the 20,000 of you that bought a Nexus One this week can protect your investment for $4.79/month. The requirement is simple. New and existing T-Mobile customers can take advantage of the PHP Insurance within 14 days of purchase. If your device needs to be replaced (and your manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the device) there will be a $130 deductible for the Nexus One. That’s pretty much it!

If there was a problem yo I’ll solve it…While the internet was quick to jump on a problem existing between the Nexus One and 3G, neither Google nor T-Mobile acknowledged the problem. Granted we’re only five days in from the initial sale date, however one might think that Google would be ahead of the game. For a company that lives by the beta moniker, for this to have completely skipped their battery of tests is confusing. T-Mobile has come out and stated through their own forums, that they are “investigating” the issue and will “report back soon”. T-Mobile customers who are voicing their complaints loudly and frequently are quick to say that any issue seems to be handset related as those individuals coming from other T-Mobile 3G handsets had none of the same issues previously.
As the complaints mount, Google too needs to come right out and acknowledge the issue through their various methods of communication. How about an email to customers, all of whom can be found via their Gmail addresses and let them know at the very least, they are aware of the issue. Sitting idly by as the complaints mount isn’t doing Google any favors.

Now that you’ve finally managed to get your hands on the HTC Nexus One “SuperPhone”, its time to put it through the various tests, at least that’s what I usually do when I get a new toy to play with. Word has it that a very large amount of users are experiencing problems with 3G connectivity. Specifically, the phone constantly switching between 3G and EDGE networks in areas that would normally have full 3G coverage, getting poor 3G coverage in general, or more often, both. Its a new device, and every piece of technology has some sort of problem. One user over at the Google Mobile Support Forums, compared the 3G reception of the HTC Nexus One and the T-Mobile G1, yielding results that favored the G1. If I could take a wild guess, I would assume that this is probably related to problems with the internal radio, a software related issue, or something totally different.

With all the Nexus One news coming out today it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Before getting gung ho and clicking that buy button, Google has gone and made it a little easier for T-Mobile folks. New customers will enjoy that $179 pricing but upgrading customers might need to break open that piggy bank a little more. The pre gets a little easier than the unlocked $530 bombshell with a 2 year coming in at $279 or $379 depending on if you are adding or upgrading your data plan. Unfortunately the discount gets a little higher for those of you who qualify for an upgrade even if it’s a totally legitimate upgrade. Then again, if you want the current HOT Android phone, is price really an object??
You can choose to purchase the Nexus One from the Google Phone Webstore without service for $529 USD, or with a qualifying T-Mobile US service plan at a discounted price:
- Nexus One without service: $529
- Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for new customers: $179
- Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are adding data plans: $279
- Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are upgrading their data plans: $379

Update: The page was just live and right after posting went down again but I was able to snap the above shot. I did take a moment to read the terms of service and it was exactly what we had seen before at quick glance. Keep checking the link!
While we are mere hours away from the Google Android announcement which is set to announce the worst kept secret in Android right now, the Nexus One. While other goodies/phones/Googly stuff might await us, for now we can take a peek around the Nexus One support page link. Originally discovered before the New Year, the link had originally taken us to a dead page. Now, we see that the page is live though surprisingly with a video of Android 2.0, not 2.1 as the Nexus One is set to release with. Unfortunately for those of you who might have been hoping for a surprise in the pricing, the Terms of Sale page are exactly what we have already seen and read. Hopefully some savvy individual can poke around here and learn a little more but for the moment the page itself is a little thin on details, especially with information regarding the release date, carrier info and the like. Regardless, we’ll know everything in just a few hours.
