"Unboxing" pics…with lots of imagination required

Well for most of us, there are 22 days left till the G1 launches. Not for this lucky anonymous tipster who sent in what just might be the first “unboxing” pics on the net. We’re using that term loosely because there were unfortunately only a few pics sent in and they leave ALOT to the imagination. That being said remember we aren’t really seeing anything “new” but still, we know you guys love spy shots of the G1.

We already know whats included in the box thanks to the G1 manuals leaking online early. Still, enjoy the pictures for what they are and just think how you will feel when you unbox your very own, white(with nasty silver), black or brown G1. If nothing else, these pics will just serve as teasers for what YOUR box will look like! Then again, we showed a little of that yesterday.

I should add a few days ago we challenged our forum users to be among the first to get us unboxing pics. There was admittedly a small “prize”, and many were willing to undertake the challenge. Since the winner is unknown, I’ll be accepting the prize on their behalf! Thanks mystery man/woman.

Android "unboxing" video…well sort of

Now hold on, watch the video before your excitement gets to far ahead of you. This comes from ktla.com and their “cyberguy.” Really, its just the box and only a glimpse at that, still its worth the 3:48.

Here are some better shots of the box itself. Not sure how fond I am of the color scheme.

More G1 pics…

Some of you have probably watched the videos from here a dozen times. Some of you probably managed to print out your pre-order confirmation text and framed it. Is that too much? Should I take it out of the frame at least? Regardless, for those us who weren’t lucky enough to be there on “launch” day, one of our astute forum posters searched T-mobile.com and came up with some nice pictures that are if nothing else pretty good indicators of what to expect color wise. They don’t contain anything we haven’t already seen, I got a better idea of what the white looked like without watching someone else groping the phone. Just good clear shots. Enjoy!

More Android please…

android

The good news of course is the days till the G1 launch are whittling down. The BETTER news is that recent reports have both Motorola and Nokia expressing interest in the Android community. Techcrunch just posted a little blurb about Motorola expanding their Android developer team from 50-350, which can only be read as a larger committment to the manufacturering of devices. This of course all bodes well for both T-mobile and the Android development community at large, the more development the better. We certainly will have large expectations for future Android devices on T-mobile if the promises of the applications and openness bode true.

Motorola certainly needs a swift kick in the rear to engineer a comeback and as the Techcrunch article points out, the lack of any fees necessary for an open source OS might just be what the doctor ordered for Motorola. Personally I’ve always felt that Motorola’s interface while easy to navigate WAS super slow and almost to the point, laughable. I remember back during the days of the Motorola razor when I was typing a text message and I would be done typing while the message was still writing on the screen. Sad. So Motorola, I say go Android: go Android go. Yeah and uh, make sure you don’t design an Android razr. That would not be cool.

San Francisco, welcome to 3G…

victorian heritage

Wake up San Francisco! Its 3G day! That’s right San Fran you are today’s lucky winners of the T-mobile 3G launch contest. Today’s winners will receive high speed broadband services as well as improved voice quality and an opportunity to use that shiny G1 to the best of its ability. With this launch T-mobile is well on its way to achieving its stated goal of 27 cities by mid-October.

It’s early and I can’t really think of anything funny to write about San Francisco, except for the fact that this picture reminds of the end sequence in the “Full House” opening credits when they are having the picnic outside. I have the theme song in my head right now and its punishing, just absolutely awful.

TMoNews Forum Weekly Wrap Up #6

Welcome to the next installment of the TMoNews forum weekly wrap up!  Yeah, I know, I know….there wasn’t one last week so it’s not really ‘weekly’, but sometimes things get in the way and we just aren’t able to get things done like we would like to.  With that said, there is quite a bit to go through tonight so without further ado, here we go!

It’s really going to be very difficult to get through this installation of the round up without without making mention of that new device that so many people have been waiting for – the Android based T-Mobile G1.  I’m sure that I wasn’t the only one that was glued to their computer monitor that morning watching the press release unfold.  So you can imagine that the forums were seeing quite a build up in anticipation, and with that comes an immensity in posting, as well as the site being overwhelmed!  Are you excited about Android or the G1?  Well, fortunately we now have a new Android sub section that includes a place to ask or chat about general Android topics as well as a place for those budding developers to chat as well!  So, don’t be shy and come on in!

Speaking of you budding developers, forum contributor jmannyjr found an early edition of a book for those of you wishing to learn Android development.  It is a little raw right now, but does have some really good information packed in its pages.  As well, it also has some good information on using Eclipse to develop your Android masterpiece!  So get to coding, and let us know what you’re up to!

One thing that is noticeably absent from the Android platform and the G1 as well is the lack of Microsoft Exchange support.  Now, this is actually kind of expected I believe, as Google is trying to push their own services as well.  While this following find isn’t exactly an easy one to implement it does make it possible to sync your G1 with an Exchange server.  Forum member mapartipi was I believe the first to tip us off to the guys at Funambol releasing a mobile sync application for Android.

As you may have already noticed, there was a scare earlier in that it was thought that T-Mobile was out of presale units. While I don’t know if that is in fact true or not, it was also reported by user walabe25 over in the forum.  However, there have been numerous confirmations that the G1 is still available through the my.t-mobile phone upgrade portal, so maybe that is just a false alarm!  Let us hope so!

All right, enough of the Android talk already!  How about some Sony Ericsson goodness for you!  How about we start off with the bad news first…..  Are you the proud owner of the SE TM506?  Do you have a case for it?  Does that case have a magnet on it?  We have one instance from user microhaxo where the case they were using was evidently interfering with the usage of the phone.  Read all about it here.  Now, we do know that the official SE case for this phone does have a magnet in it, but we have users that have reported no problems at all with that case.  So hopefully it looks like it’s just a case of a case having too strong a magnet in it (does that make sense….)!  Of course, that’s not all the bad news this go round.  Some of you have probably heard that apparently yes, the Sony Ericsson X1 will work with T-Mobile’s 3G.  We have also heard the same thing around these parts, thanks to Technology1.  But that’s good news you say!  Well, I’m not done….we here at TMoNews have had no confirmation that this device will be coming to T-Mobile USA.  So it looks like if you want to pick one of these up you’re going to have to get it as an unlocked device, and the price tag that goes along with that!

Now for the good news on the SE side of things.  This first item is actually a little older, and should have been in an earlier installment but for some reason it was overlooked.  Options are always a good thing, and when it comes to free GPS routing options are kind of limited.  Especially on phones that aren’t PDAs!  So it’s good to hear from jet1000 that mgmaps works great on the SE TM506!  He gives some great instructions on getting it to work as well, so thanks jet!  It’s also the second item seeing as how I don’t have any other good news for the SE camp!  However, we do have the newcomer billzkustomz who has a nice shot and a short test drive of the upcoming Samsung T919!  Come on billz, we’re still waiting for those better shots you’ve promised us!

Finally tonight, we’ve had word that the Blackberry Pearl 8220 has finally been priced!  While it is nowhere near the rumored $50 price point that everybody was hoping for, it’s not all that terrible for a two or one year activation price.  Once again we have microhaxo gives us the full retail price of the phone, while user BREATHE gives us the scoop on the new and partial activations. Thanks guys!

Well, that’s it for this weeks version of the round up.  Everything comes from the forum, so you can always head over there and read about it first!  But if that’s not your thing, then I’ll always be here to give you the highlights!

T-mobile to open up the web to all?!

happy-face-istock-456

Gearlog is reporting that T-mobile may be moving away from the walled garden that is T-zones sometime next month. With the recent news that the developer store is now “live” this news comes at a welcome time. T-mobile seems to be taking all the right steps and making all the right moves by listening to the customer experience. Well yipee!

This is most welcome to the ears of T-mobile faithful around the country. We have long since been envious of the “web and walk” solution that our overseas brethren have enjoyed for some time. I know I can speak for large numbers when I say that the mobile web is no longer an “extra.”  It is now a necessity that to be used on an almost daily basis. The days are gone when we want just to find movie times or get sports scores from or mobile devices. Now, we want the web in our pocket, dare I say we “need” the web in our pocket. Then again, maybe I just have an internet addiction and need a vacation. Regardless, this is a welcome move.

Speaking to T-Mobile director of handset innovation Saj Sahar who had this to say:

“We’re relaunching and rebranding T-Zones,” Sahar said at the G1 launch. “It will be an open experience … next month.”

G1 unlock and NEW data ruling!

ball_and_chain2

SIM UNLOCK:

The good folks at Gizmodo did some homework and answered a question that immediately came to my mind during the press conference and thankfully they found the answer. Most of you already know T-mobile has a standing policy that after 90 days of service a customer in good standing may request a sim unlock code. Nothing new or surprising on that front. However, the question arose because of the high profile of the G1 and the heavy subsidy for T-mobile, there was some debate as to whether or not sim-unlock would be allowed.

“T-Mobile branded phones operating on the T-Mobile network may only use T-Mobile SIM cards. To use a T-Mobile branded phone on another wireless carrier’s network with a non-T-Mobile SIM card, you must first request a “SIM Unlock” code from T-Mobile. Conversely, if you have a phone from another North American wireless carrier, you may need to request a “SIM Unlock” code from that carrier before being able to use a T-Mobile SIM card on the T-Mobile network.

* SIM Unlock Codes will only be provided after your account has been active for 90 days. Only one unlock code may be provided per customer every 90 days.”

New Data Rules:

Yesterday the blogosphere blew up with some concerns over the 1GB limitation on data. Turns out T-mobile took heed and re-worded their data policy today to allow for a looser interpretation. The important thing is they got rid of the 1GB specific rule. This is why we love our magenta.

“3G coverage is available only in certain markets. See coverage map. To provide the best network experience for all of our customers we may temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. Your data session, plan, or service may be suspended, terminated, or restricted for significant roaming or if you use your service in a way that interferes with our network or ability to provide quality service to other users. Some devices require specific data plans; if you do not have the right plan for your device, you may not be able to use data services. Additional charges may apply. Domestic use only.”

Update: Engadget just posted a statement from T-mobile,

“Our goal, when the T-Mobile G1 becomes available in October, is to provide affordable, high-speed data service allowing customers to experience the full data capabilities of the device and our 3G network. At the same time, we have a responsibility to provide the best network experience for all of our customers so we reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers.

We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with current customers and potential new customers.”
