As expected AT&T has filed with the FCC its Public Interest Statement regarding the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. The filing is designed to demonstrate the benefits of the merger with specific emphasis on how a combined 4G LTE network could cover 97& of the US population. In a conference held just moments ago the FCC discussed the steps it would take to evaluate the proposed AT&T and T-Mobile acquisition. Paperwork has been filed by the FCC and the real fun begins for AT&T and T-Mobile to submit their own documentation which will be done under strict confidentiality. The United States Senate has announced that hearings will be held by the Senate Judiciary committee into the AT&T / T-Mobile merger to determine if consumer competition would be reduced in light of the merger. It’s fine and good to see that the Senate is taking up the proposed merger however the same situation occurred in the very same committee with the Comcast-NBC merger and that was ultimately approved so I’d keep any expectations in check. … [read full article]
FCC Commissioner Michael Copps confirmed to C-SPAN during an interview that he isn’t happy about the proposed acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T. Copps is concerned about the “amount of power and influence the merged company would hold, given that two companies would virtually control the wireless landscape.” In Copps own opinion, the deal will prove more difficult to approve than the Comcast-NBC Universal which he voted against but was ultimately approved. Speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T reiterated that the proposed AT&T/T-Mobile deal would not create a “duopoly” as most customers have five or more mobile choices and that costs would decline further as mobile broadband traffic grows.
