T-Mobile adds more mid-band LTE capacity to hundreds of cell sites

tmobiletowergraymagenta

T-Mobile has been on a roll lately, rolling out mid-band and low-band LTE expansions every couple of weeks, and today we got another update on T-Mo’s efforts.

T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray says that T-Mobile has upgraded more cell sites with additional mid-band LTE capacity within the past two weeks. These upgrades include PCS and AWS spectrum.

Included in this latest round of mid-band LTE upgrades is Greeley, CO; Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; and Milwaukee, WI. As usual, I’ve compiled the full list of cities announced today, and you can see them below.

I keep seeing Tampa,FL on everyone of these LTE capacity upgrades. Well I’m calling BS that they have been deployed I was just there last week and in downtown the LTE speeds at least during the day were terrible. Even reached out to T-Mobile support and they said the upgrades were scheduled for July.

    • bkat11

      No way! #fakenews

    • KMB877

I agree with you. I saw Nashua NH, New Hide Park NY, Brooklyn NY and Danbury CT on previous lists. I started to believe it must be some degree of BS here…

      • bkat11

He’s nuts. I live in downtown Tampa and my phone flies all day everyday all over Tampa Bay. I haven’t been to the northeast so I can’t comment on those areas but Tampa Bay is WELL COVERED

        • Acdc1a

Agreed. I’m in Tampa frequently for work. Never any issues downtown, Ybor, nowhere.

        • bkat11

I live in Hyde Park…did a speed test this morning when I saw this post. 212 down and 35 up inside my apt

      • Charmed79

Also agree, I live in Nashua, NH, nothing has changed.

  • Lil’C74GD

They said they were upgrading my area the last three upgrades ago and at first I still got no improvement with speeds like 1Mbps. I called BS and was able to get way faster speeds on 3g(10Mbps) until this last week I tried an speed test on LTE and now I average around 150 Mbps. During peek hrs to and well over 200 at night. I’m using a S9 Plus so I had been expecting these speeds when I bought the phone and was unimpressed with the speeds I was getting until recently. Oh, I stay in Houston so coverage is not a issue anywhere. Great improvement Tmo.

    • Jay Holm

Wow!!! I live in Baytown, but travel to Houston for work, in Tomball today, I have the S8, the modem and rasio is that much better in the S9? Where soexidicspec in Houston are you getting 100-200+?

      • Phil7474

I stay off 45 and Hardy Toll Rd in the Inverness Forrest(1960)subdivision. I clocked over 200 one day off 290 before I took a trip outta town. That’s when I felt something was up. And did a speed test at home and seen the improvements they’ve done. Thought they were BS’in me at first because I saw no improvement even though I saw my area months ago on the list. But yeah now it’s faster than my home internet. So to sum it up North Houston.

        • Jay Holm

Wow!!!!! I have gotten above 200 a few tikes, it was near the 59, where KPRC is located. But that was the ONLY location I ever got that. Have you gotten abiva 200 at multiple locations?

        • Phil7474

Hey this is new to me. I use to switch my data to 3g at home because LTE was so horrible if I wasn’t using WiFi. Before then I’ve never even got over a 100 with my S9 Plus even though I saw ppl around the nation getting speeds well over 100. I figured Houston just wasn’t a strong market for T-Mobile. I’ll be doing radom test to see for myself how much they’ve improved.

        • Jay Holm

I’m really curious how many places in Houston are putting out 100-200+, and how much better the modem and radio are in the S9 than the S8.

        • Lil’C74GD

The S9 has a Cat 18 modem reaching speeds up to 1.2 Gb theoretically. As the S8 has a Cat 16 modem with 1Gb max speeds theoretically. So not that much better at all. I just “think” the S9 handles carrier aggregation better to provide higher speeds. As for the amount of places that can provide that speed depends on if your phone can handle carrier aggregation and spectrum available

        • Jay Holm

Ahh! My S8 is having some sort of problem with the earpeice and talking on speakerphone, I ordered a Bluetooth earpeice from Amazon. I really don’t want to upgrade until next year’s S Series comes out, it should have a 7nm processor and be more of a leap forward from the S8, than the S9 is.

        • Lil’C74GD

Yeah just wait. Even though the S9 is a great phone, I don’t recommend anyone upgrade to it if you have the S8. Question, dose the S8 have Dolby Atmos? I love the S9 sterio speakers and Dolby Atmos sounds settings. And I’d be pissed if my earpeice and speakerphone gave me problesp in a flagship. I got insurance in case something happened to my phone I can just go get another one but I hope to never have to do that. S10 should be a breath of fresh air as it’s also the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy series. I might I might just upgrade from the S9.

  • Rob H.

They improved in Murray, KY. I see faster speeds and more bars. Still waiting on a major improvement in 38242 though. I frequently lose signal in my house.

  • Sharti24

How are they adding the new mid band spectrum? Are they using old spectrum from hspa and converting it over to LTE?

    • bkat11

Yeah they moved HSPA to AWS last year…I think its due to sunset in 2020.

  • Omar Boyer

Can anyone tell my why they don’t like California? Every time I read the list on here they never add anything in all of California. Only place it said they did was los angeles a while back , I never saw anything else in California anymore afterwards…. And besides I haven’t been able to get band 71 here at all on my s9, speed is great sometimes 200 +Mbps outside ,but same problem inside buildings bad signal . That 600 MHz is defff needed here and San Francisco and San Jose .

      • Lil’C74GD

Damn that’s alot of CA updates.

      • Omar Boyer

Thanks I have not seen that list . Just wondering why I’m not getting I’m los ángeles? the 600 MHz . Outside a building I have band 4 full bars , inside spotty band 12 zero to 1 bars . I know the s9 supports it ..

        • Andrew Singleton

unlikely low band spectrum would be initially deployed in the middle of a major city. you’ll see a widening of midband spectrum and possibly 700 mhz, but 600 might not make sense there. if it does make sense there, there are other types of transmission (tv, radio) that use the spectrum who would have to switch off of it for tmobile to start using it, which takes years.

  • darendt

They need to get some damn service up in Moccasin Ca. Verizon barley works but at least gets some service. 600Mhz range would be perfect.

  • Mike McDonald

Just opened Cellmapper to see if anything new around me is lit up. I see a tower (eNB ID 158) showing Band 12 & Band 29(!) What is Band 29? Is it a Sprint block? Specifically Cell 38, ID 40486, Downlink 725.1 MHz, Lower SMH Blocks D/E Band 29. I’m very puzzled.

  • riverhorse

Just tested in NYC, three different test apps, 12-2:30pm… mid-Queens to WTC in Manhattan, open air and down in subway. Cheap phone no 600 band, much less any LAA or carrier aggregation:
    Ping 20-35
    Down 30-50
    Up 10-30

  • Joe

How about adding more cell towers?

    • Jared Hylton

Specifically in Eastern Texas. From 75684 down to Nac, and from 75662 UP, all the way to Texarkana. Horrible coverage. Unusable.

  • Jerry Sisniega

Coverage in mission tx 78572 is horrible

  • James Dawson

Here in southern Maine I went from no bars to lte at my house since last year.
