T-Mobile executives stayed at Trump hotel following Sprint merger announcement, says new report

johnlegerebingeonmusicfreedom

The FCC may have paused the 180-day shot clock on its review of the T-Mobile-Sprint merger, but there is still some news regarding the deal coming out.

The day after T-Mobile and Sprint announced their merger, nine T-Mobile executives stayed at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., according to a report from The Washington Post. These execs were on the hotel’s list of “VIP Arrivals” that included CTO Neville Ray, CFO Braxton Carter, and CEO John Legere. They were scheduled to stay one to three days.

The report goes on to say that T-Mobile executives have stayed at this hotel several more times since then. VIP Arrivals lists viewed by The Post show 38 nights of hotel stays by T-Mo execs, though that number could be higher. Rooms at the hotel regularly cost more than $300 per night, which means that T-Mo paid quite a bit to stay there.

Legere was spotted in the lobby of Trump’s hotel last week and explained to a Post reporter why he chose to say there. “It’s become a place I feel very comfortable,” the T-Mobile CEO said. “At the moment I am in town for some meetings at the Department of Justice. And it’s very convenient for that.”

The news of T-Mobile executives staying at Trump’s hotel is making headlines because of T-Mo’s proposed merger with Sprint, which must be approved by federal regulators before it can be completed. It’s also notable because Legere previously got into a bit of a Twitter spat with Trump, with Trump calling T-Mo’s service “terrible” and Legere responding by checking out of his Trump hotel and saying “Now I don’t have to watch tv with the 1st 9 channels being the Trump family saying how wonderful they are:)”. Legere’s tweets have since been deleted.

T-Mobile and Sprint’s proposed merger recently received approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and Team Telecom — a group that includes the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense — which cleared the deal of any possible national security, law enforcement, or public safety issues. The T-Mobile-Sprint merger is still awaiting approval from the FCC as well as the Justice Department, which must clear it of any antitrust concerns.

T-Mobile and Sprint have said that they expect their merger to close in the first half of 2019.

UPDATE: T-Mobile CEO John Legere has tweeted a response to today’s report:

They made Jimmy Carter sell his peanut farm, but apparently it’s a-okay to openly slip money into Donald Trump’s pocket to grease the wheels for a merger.

    • monkeysoup

Jimmy Carter was not forced to sell anything. He chose to put it in a Blind trust. After his brother Billy ran it into the ground and went deeply in debt, Carter spent years rebuilding. Presidents have no legal requirement to sell anything.

      • F4LL0U7

I’m sorry, you are correct, he was not forced to do it. It was the moral obligation / norm of the office that was never challenged until the current administration, where all immoral actions that aren’t explicitly illegal (and of course some that are) are fair game.

        • marque2

Trump isn’t running his business either. The moral issue is if you have direct control of your business at the same time you are president. Trump does not. Trump has put his properties in trust, with his relatives running the company, just like Carter did. (or similar laws have changed over the years)

Everyone just assumes things, without looking it up, because of some visceral hate. He also never did golden showers, and is such a germaphobe, he wouldn’t even consider it.

        • F4LL0U7

Trump isn’t running his business because he’s barely capable of even running a bath by himself. The issue is that he most definitely continues to be enriched by his businesses, and those wishing to gain favor with him have many easy ways of doing so.

        • Jose Mendoza

And that’s where they are hypocrites and how we know they are manipulating us! They’re ok with their politicians doing it, but when a democrat does it they crap their pants! But we all know it’s manufactured outrage because they already took over the Democratic party with their right wing economic system. The barely left and lipservice social leanings are only a way to have controlled opposition against us so that we keep voting for people who will be corrupt and barely even care about any social issues while in office! That’s why we have new democrats coming in, and that’s why they hate them so much! Ever notice why they only get upset at Pelosi when they don’t get what they want (manufactured outrage) and then go back to going against the more left leaning or progressive candidates? It’s because it’s controlled opposition. They want to make us think they are mad at someone who doesn’t represent us, while they still benefit! The democrats gladly caved in to the 9/11 fear mongered racist Bush era border fencing, while technological border security which would have probably been more cheaper and efficient, would’ve been the better option! The fencing was only a stunt meant as a “middle finger” back to the immigrants who came illegally as a result of their terrible economic policy from Reagan to Clinton which outsourced jobs to Mexico and other southern countries, lowering their wages, leading to higher crime rates, then starting the drug war, and hence how we got people coming here without papers because they couldn’t afford the process, nor the eternal wait list of now 3 million while the recent quota (before the Trump administration) was 75,000 per year! Sometimes this does lead me to question. Was 9/11 actually an inside job? Could it of been a straw man for a border wall on the south that somehow stopped immigrants from the middle East? And for the recent caravan, I actually heard reports from several sources down south that somehow Trump was involved with the caravan which leads me to believe if that was supposed to be a straw man for a border wall! And not to mention the fact that many of those migrants have the right to asylum which is legal immigration! I realize not all Republicans or Trump supporters may do it intentionally, but I DO KNOW, that there is many who know the political strategy they’ve been playing and it’s about to be game over for them soon because FACTS don’t care about their FEELINGS ;), literally

        • Jose Mendoza

They all do it! Both democrats and Republicans! They put their assets in the trusts of family and then pass policy to reward those who “stay at hotels”, “donate to their charity” and so on. Then after leaving office, they secure a top spot in those corproations or take back control of their assets. Then they benefit. It’s not anti Trump bs. It’s political corruption. The only exception is, Trump manages to somehow break the most rare bribery laws including taking money from a foreign government via Deutche Telekom and their stake at T-Mobile US. If they take donations from “individual corporations” at the several thousands level during a campaign, then the T-Mobile and Trump collusion isn’t unrealistic. $10,000 is fairly enough money to get a politician to bend over for a favor while in office.

      • TicTacsforPeace

Legal vs the right thing to do. Trump’s golden shower on us. Winning!

  • monkeysoup

I’m missing how this is news. Who cares whether they stayed at Trump or Motel 6? So what?

    • stupid8911 .

It may or may not be a conflict of interest given the merger being a yay or nay by Big Orange

      • monkeysoup

I doubt Trump will have much input of whether the merger goes through. It’s not like his blessing is required. Staying at his hotel seems rather an unlikely way of influencing the final decision. At the end of the day, this is likely nothing more than a big yawn.

        • TicTacsforPeace

Ask AT&T how they feel about that.

        • marque2

AT&T will just lay off a few more people and call it a night.

To be real for a second – Trump does not control the Trump Hotel. It just happens to be the fanciest hotel in the area, and CEOs tend to go to fancy hotels. Nothing more, nothing less.

        • SirStephenH

He has an enormous effect on the merger at this point. The merger is almost guaranteed to go through but is being held up because of the Trump shutdown. This merger will not go through as long as Trump keeps the government closed and that’s what they’re trying to change.

      • teaReactor

That’s not Legere’s fault necesarily. It’s more to do with Trump not divesting and simply ignoring inconvenient things like the Emoluments Clause, that it creates that perception that just about anything could be conflict of interest when it comes to his “former” business(es).

  • nutmac

3 minutes into this clip from The Aviator says it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MXSAwkVU3U

If politics was clean, John Legere did not have to do this.

    • marque2

The question is why wouldn’t he do it? CEO’s of large companies stay in the best hotels. The best Hotel in the DC area is the Trump hotel ergo John stayed at the Trump hotel.

I think it is a great excuse for him as well to stay at such a fine hotel – because Trump haters seem to think he did it, not because CEO’s tend to stay at the finest hotels in town, but because of the evil orange man, so Win Win, so he doesn’t lose points for looking like an elitist!

      • NapoPeb

        >The best Hotel in the DC area is the

        • marque2

So good of John to save Tmobile some bucks by going to the gutter Trump hotel.

          Thanks for the info.

  • GinaDee

It’s not illegal to T-Mobile corporate staff to stay at the hotel of the President.

I can see where merger opponents would try to make a big deal about this though.

Sorry folks this merger is going to go through.

    • Ascertion

People on Reddit are already saying they’re switching carriers because of this… Literally all of the carriers are doing this in some way or another.

      • GinaDee

They have no idea how many hundreds of millions Verizon and AT&T spend on their corporate donors.

If they leave T-Mobile on that merit alone they are likely naïve, out of touch or both.

        • Francisco Peña

blind hate of Trump. Idiots for those that do that then.

        • Jonathan

I don’t have a blind hate for the man. I hate the man because of the way he treats others and how his policies have effected people for worse.

        • slybacon

I feel like I’ve been affected for the better; lower tax bill and less to give out to the dependents, safer country on the horizon.

        • Jonathan

Lower tax bill? Oh please it’s just more tax cuts for the rich, trickle down economics doesn’t work. Less for the dependents? What’s wrong with having social safety nets? So tell me this, how is the country safer? Are you referring to the wall that Trump wants? You know that illegal immigration has been going down for years now. I’m all for border security but wasting US taxpayers money on a wall that Trump promised Mexico would pay for is ridiculous. People have already tunneled under the border before and will continue to do so. But if he’s able to get Mexico to pay for his wall by all means build it, I just don’t like the idea of wasting our tax dollars to build it.

        • Francisco Peña

2013, 50+ Democratic senators all voted for $40B+ in border fencing and enhanced enforcement/protection services for 630 miles along the border.
2009, Schumer, Pelosi, Clinton, Obama ALL supported tougher immigration, turning away illegal crossers. They stated that failure to protect our borders was a failure against the American people.
in the 1990s, Dianne Feinstein can on a tough border, tough immigration platform during her elections. She labeled her opponent as SOFT on immigration.

Now they want clueless folks to come, get services, and try to get them the right to vote.

        • Jose Mendoza

Stop with your “but establishment democrats caved to Republicans” bs! You know a wall is useless and that we need immigration reform and technological border security! It works great on our northern border! Funny thing is, most illegal immigration today is by Canadians yet I don’t see them getting threatened by sociopathic CBP morons on the southern border! Oh wait…it was about race because “brown people scary” and “they bring all the drugs and crime” while most of the drugs and crime comes from within our borders!

        • Francisco Peña

Hoeven-Corker border security amendment passed by an overwhelming 69-29 vote in Dem controlled Senate.

Items included were an additional 20K border agents over the base bill.
additional 350 miles (totaling 700 with base bill) of fencing
          Mandatory E-verify for employers
Mandated electronic entry/exit at all international airports/seaports.

Jose, I’d love to see where Cocaine is made in the US.

        • Jose Mendoza

Francisco, I’d like to see where most opiods that cause deaths come from! I’d also like to know where most of the meth and benzos come from! As for the drugs that “come” over the border, officials at the ports of entry know a lot about that ;)
First step to reduce the number of illegal immigration, punish the certain employers who would not be allowed to employ people without a status. Second, end disasterous trade deals that cause corporations to go overseas. (Neither Trump’s trade policy nor NAFTA include any parts that solve this problem)
Use technological ONLY border security that is both cheaper and efficient, and eliminates the need for a border wall (because there’s no getting past a sensor without very very sofisticated tactics only hackers could know, and since most people coming over the border are poor, it’s efficient).
Hiring more immigration judges and reforming CBP, increasing IAD or other internal investigations department funding for CBP, abolish ICE, bring back INS and let police do the job when a person commits a crime period.
Immigration Amnesty for DACA, DAPA, and the 11 million undocumented immigrants as a cheaper alternative instead of spending billions which would theoretically never deport everybody (because the world isn’t black and white, and you can’t just end all crime as it’s impossible).

Nobody on the left is for open borders really, take note. If you can’t realize that cheap labor caused illegal immigration, then it’s safe to assume you benefit personally from something related to what you bash.

        • Jose Mendoza

Exactly! A person making $30 only gets a mere $600 per year more while a millionaire income gets $20,000 more! And you can only imagine the people at the top who already cheat on their deductions and other loopholes! And anyone who says a higher minimum wage is impossible, you’re lying straight out of your teeth! My dad who actually has a business could pay his part time employee TRIPLE, and he’d still make money! I could pay my employees $20/hr and I’m still making 20% profit off “remanufactured” products! People who say “small business will hurt” are only butthurt about rich people not maximizing every penny! That’s just the pure truth! I will say don’t listen to these propagandists! They won’t accept the facts even if you explain it to them! As for people saying the left are open borders, we’re far from that! We want a complete overhaul of the right wing immigration system! How can you expect legal immigration with a quota of 75,000 per year (and maybe less now under this administration) while the waiting list is almost 3 million! At best, most immigrants both legal and not still benefit the economy! Tucker Carlson claimed the undocumented people take $54 billion in benefits while they pay back $60 billion+ back and they get nothing from it! And give me a break with the “but a wall” when you don’t even want to talk about how the same corproations you guys will gladly suck up to and give tax cuts and DEREGULATE, all while they outsourced jobs to Mexico (and other countries) and LOWERED their WAGES and don’t expect something to not happen! Voodoo Reaganomics DON’T WORK! Nobody is realistically calling for actual socialism! At best, were calling for social democracy which is still capitalistic! But the rich idiot shills will say it’s “socialism or Communism” when it’s far from that. Communism is Far Left. Socialism is Left. Social Democracy/Social Capitalism is Center Left. Center Capitalism is center and sometimes center right. Libertarianism is center right. Fascism is right wing. Dictatorship is far right. Yes VENZUELA is led by a DICTATOR who LOVES self enrichment and WORKING with the rich from VENEZUELA! He is far from being a socialist or a communist! The only communist thing in Venezuela is the social programs which aren’t even communist at all anymore because of corruption! Did I break any brains yet? You guys regurgitate the same talking points that are told to you and for what? Taking advantage of cheap oil from the middle east from “wars that our innocent men and women fought for “OUR” freedom”? Giving away free money to the people who are already cheating the system and sending our jobs overseas? Oppressing communities who are exploited by low wages all for the maximizing profit? Bashing the poor for not being able to afford anything or an emergency on a $22,000 a year salary? Not being able to get an education because people in debt don’t have a good credit score nor benefit much from scholarships and grants? Using poor non whites in other countries for cheap labor while turning them away and demonizing them for the sh*t system we gave them? Give me a break! Because we all know what’s been going on! And we also know establishment democrats are only controlled opposition by the right in efforts to stop us from a way better system! Stop with the bs already! We know what’s happening and like T-Mobile says, “WE WON’T STOP”!

        • Francisco Peña

exactly. Lowest unemployment on record for Blacks and Hispanics.
As of September, the Unemployment rate was the lowest since 1969
black minority owned businesses INCREASED 400% over the course of the previous yr, a result attributed to the tax cuts.

        • Francisco Peña

Lowest unemployment on record for Blacks and Hispanics.
As of September, the Unemployment rate was the lowest since 1969.
Last yr, at least about same time, black minority owned businesses INCREASED 400% over the course of the previous yr, a result attributed to the tax cuts.
Pre-shutdown, economy was growing at a nice pace.

so please tell me, how is lower unemployment worse? I’ll wait for you to get your DNC-funded talking point flyer out.

        • NardVa

I guess you got the RNC talking point flyer. Experts have already broke down that Trump wasn’t the cause of lower unemployment with blacks and hispanics. The unemployment numbers for this group has been on decline every year since 2010. The numbers were going down with or without Trump. The claim about a 400% increase has also been debunked. The survey company that pulled this number out of the air (no facts to back it up) has retracted the claim.

        • Enzowned

Hard to say it’s blind now, isn’t it? There’s a lot that’s pretty clear there.

      • marque2

I nearly switched because of last years superbowl ad. To paraphrase: Babies are innocent, you are racist,.You should be a baby, Racist – then I won’t call you racist – for a bit anyway. Now buy our phone – Racist.

Somehow Millenials like that sort of thing.

      • teaReactor

People switch carriers like they change underwear though.

    • Eric A

Trump said the shutdown could last for “years”. If that’s the case, don’t expect this merger to happen any time soon.

    • marque2

Why is it illegal to stay in a hotel? Not true.

  • (J²)

I don’t like Trump as a our president of for almost anything for that matter but the man is a real estate genus. We can at least give credit where it’s due.

Besides, I’m sure any business either for/against the practices is going to do whatever is necessary and within reason to get what they want.

    • Jonathan

Yeah sure a Real Estate Genius who went bankrupt so many times.

      • (J²)

Hence the reason I said real estate. His failures are in almost every other industry or venture.

Media and real estate… is all I give the man credit for.

        • Enzowned

So his real estate business wasn’t part of his bankrupcies?

        • (J²)

Did I specifically that or are we trolling?

I don’t care for Trump as much as the next person but I will not pretend like the man has never done anything right…

For those who need further clarification, his most successful arenas are real estate and media.

        • marque2

True, but the bankruptcies aren’t what people think either. They are investment groups where you convince a lot of people to invest in some property and some have success and some fail. It is common for this to happen even with resorts. The trick is to get more successful ones than failures.

Note that most successful people have had bankruptcies. Walt Disney had 7 pre-disney (and several with Disney ventures) and I wouldn’t begrudge him that because whoah, he finally got it right with that 8th business. In fact if you want to try something really out there, the first thing you should do is create a LLC or other business entity so in case it goes bankrupt they can’t go after all your assets.

        • (J²)

I appreciate that information for those who clearly need it on the thread but you did respond to the wrong person.

I’m pretty much in agreement with you lol and the fact that you can fail a few times before getting it right.

        • marque2

Sorry. At least it is the same subthread though.

        • Bklynman

Yes that what they do,and Trump and all other millionaires, and billionaires, have no money to there name they are worth nothing,if you sue them, somehow win,you get nothing,if you sue their corps.,they go out of business you get nothing.

        • dtam

just because he didn’t go bankrupt in real estate, doesn’t mean he’s a genius. anybody with money could have bought real estate and made money during that economic boom, he’s just lucky enough to inherit so much money from daddy which he can make real estate investments.

so yeah, he’s not a good businessman

        • (J²)

You are on tmonews.com (for all things T-Mobile) talking about Trump and the Trump Hotel – in fact, we all are. Clearly, he’s doing something well. The man is creating buzz for himself and his real estate businesses whether I agree or not, we all just had a debate about Trump.

      • Philip

Did you all know all politicians are rich people? All politicians are corrupt.

      • Red

“So many times.” Yup, five or six out of 500+. Oh my stars and garters, what a horrific record!!!!11!!!!

      • Bklynman

Yes,you are very correct, mmmm, how many billions have you made so far?

      • teaReactor

No one actually says he is great with money. Just that he makes nice buildings. (I wouldn’t know) He can’t have done too bad for as rich as he is, but he wouldn’t be the first corporate person to have black marks in their money mgmt past and still achieve quite a bit… Steve Jobs is remembered for his achievements, not for his firing from Apple. And he was quite spendy with his business & products back then.

Sprint stayed home. They knew they wouldn’t have cell service in DC. Plus the big money is with TMO. Just saying.
But seriously, I do see both sides of concern here. It’s very easy to to grease the hand through a company instead of flat out handing over bribe money. They could of stayed elsewhere but choice to stay at Trump’s hotel in hopes to gain points. Hey, it’s a business, can’t fault TMO for trying to get in good.

    • slybacon

      Smart business

    • marque2

Its a very nice hotel. Probably the best in DC which is probably the reason he stayed there. I don’t expect executives to hang at the Motel 6, even though they will keep the light on for them.

    • StevenM

      A 10k hotel bill won’t sway a BILLIONAIRE. Legere’s explanation is reasonable.

  • SirStephenH

And the IG (Inspector General) recently released a report that says that the GSA (General Services Administration) improperly allowed Trump to keep the lease in violation of the Emoluments Clause. I’m disgusted that T-Mobile’s response to the government shutdown and the halt to the consideration of the merger is to provide Trump with emoluments.

    • Red

Gonna mention that he dumped the hotel off to a trust to be run by his sons. Or are we just gonna skip over that part?

      • Reagan1

Trump could cure cancer and people/press would complain he’s putting healthcare workers out of a job. This is all so silly…the stupid press stories, the D/R’s fighting, etc.

        • riverhorse

Yes, these kind of people create toxic work environments, ergo are economic failures who want the govt to take money away from the rich to give to therm. These are the American grandkids of the WWII pacifists who rioted and killed pro-US involvement adherents…and the kids of the hippies who preferred drugs over hard work. As for the immigrants, the ones we’re getting are the descendants of Communist guerrillas who believe their successful compatriots, Europeans and Americans are all evil…we get very few of the successful ones anymore because nowadays there are substantial middle / upper classes plus diminished civil warfare in most Western Hemisphere countries.

    • riverhorse

Mainly because we’re talking negligible sums.

  • Rodman

I feel that people have a tendency to choose sides too quickly (Apple vs Android, Democrats vs Republicans, and so on) and society forces us to defend our choices with such conviction that the other choices becomes repulsive to them.
I’ve always felt that Legere and Trump are very similar to one another. They are both a bit brash and bullish, both send mean tweets, but they are both fighting for causes that need to be completed and or undone. The difference is that Legere doesn’t have the negative press every day to hide the good that is being done. I respect both of them for what they are doing, and don’t think either of them would be as effective if they acted like the other executives do.

  • please if tmobile news becomes a BS liberal outlet.. im out… who gives a shizzz where legere stayed

Er, Legere confirmed it was true. Idiot.

    • Android_God

You do realize that they know who the source is right? I don’t think you understand how this stuff works. And they don’t have to reveal their sources. Keep sucking down that Fox News Kool-Aid

The best part is watching all of the trumptards losing their minds over this. if this was Obama who owned a hotel in Washington DC trumptards would be finding the nearest tree to hang him from

Funny. Like many US corporations, T-Mobile likes open borders despite the detrimental impact on American workers.

All of those benefits require a SSN which you can’t get if you’re undocumented but good try there champ!

      • They get them by getting TEMPORARY ID numbers assigned by the IRS.
They also steal SSNs. Your ignorance is staggering.

  • WHO CARES if they stay at a Trump hotel-just get the job done! Only unhinged anti-Trumpers care. Most people don’t!

  • teaReactor

The only reason this is notable is because John Legere had that big Twitter fight with Trump many years ago about staying in his hotel. (And Trump told him Tmobile’s signal sucks or something like that). I’m a little surprised they kept going after, but he can stay at Trump hotel. I don’t really care as a customer. Will continue to support.
