T-Mobile confirms another round of mid-band LTE capacity upgrades for hundreds of cell sites

Two weeks after T-Mobile last announced a round of mid-band LTE upgrades, it’s confirmed that another batch of upgrades has been made.

T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray says that the magenta carrier has upgraded hundreds of cell sites with more mid-band LTE capacity in the past two weeks. These upgrades typically include both PCS and AWS spectrum.

This latest round of mid-band LTE upgrades is spread throughout the U.S., with lots of upgrades made in California, New York, and Massachusetts. Some of the cities and towns that received upgrades this time around include Sacramento, CA; Boise, ID; Foxboro, MA; Astoria, NY; and Austin, TX.

It’s always nice to see them beefing up everything they can, when they can. If the T-Mo/Sprint merger happens, they’ll be able to TRULY increase coverage area, speeds, capacity for increasing demand, and we could all benefit from it, truly. People think there are only the big 4, but they have to make concessions and do deals that are beneficial for us all, despite what everyone thinks. Except when CellOne came to town in my area once, long ago. Ugh. Horrible service.

Still waiting to see any kind of upgrade/update to the towers here in Mississippi. They have only upgraded 1 or 2 sites as far as I’m aware of and this state is in serious need of a viable 3rd option besides AT&T and Verizon. The only other option for cell service of any kind is a local provider that’s actually partners with T-Mobile. I mean AT&T has the best overall coverage in the state but I know T-Mobile can push past them if they tried and people are wanting a better option than the “others” here.

Naval air station Meridian sucks coverage wise. Mississippi doesnt own much 700mhz

Glad to see MA on the list multiple times for when I visit.

I wish they’d give more specific information. I’d be interested to drive by an upgrade if it’s near me and see if I notice the difference. What’s midband upgrade anyway? Isn’t this spectrum they already owned? So what are they actually doing? Additional sites or adding 4X4 MIMO or QAM25?

    • taxandspend

Adding spectrum that they already owned but weren’t using.

    • SirStephenH

There’s no way of telling what spectrum T-Mobile’s using but it’s likely refarmed spectrum from 3g (UMTS, HSPA+) and possibly even spectrum that hasn’t deployed yet.

i call bullcrap.. i have actually seen not much improvement in terms of speed or coverage…both are a bit of issue here…
