LG G Stylo and LG Leon will be available through T-Mobile from May 20

lg g stylo leon

In all the hype and buzz surrounding LG’s latest flagship – the impressive G4 – it would have been easy to miss T-Mobile’s announcement that it will also be launching two more of the manufacturer’s devices this Spring. The G Stylo and Leon are two of the latest budget-friendly Android phones to be announced and – if an internal memo we’ve been sent is correct – both will be launching on May 20th.

Retail staff are being told to prepare for the new devices from May 13, with a merchandising change out scheduled for May 19. The all important pricing hasn’t yet been shared with us, or with staff it seems, but at least we know now when the two low-end devices are going to be available for customers to take away. You can see the internal communications below:

The LG G Stylo is a budget phablet with a 5.7-inch, 720×1280 HD display and a built-in stylus for enabling multitasking between screens. It also has a 13MP camera, a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (expandable to 128GB). Its battery is an impressive 3,000mAh cell which should prove to be very long-lasting considering the low resolution of the display and relatively low-powered processor. Software is Android 5.0 Lollipop with LG’s “responsive UI” skin on top.

As for the Leon, this device is – by the sounds of it – much further down the food chain. It has a 4.5-inch FWVGA display with a resolution of just 480×854 (218ppi) and is powered by a Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. Its camera is a basic 5MP snapper with 1080p video, while the front facing sensor is VGA resolution. Like the Stylo, it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop with LG’s software skin. On the plus side, it is LTE-enabled.

Both the Leon and G Stylo have their support pages up and running on T-Mobile’s site, although both are seriously lacking in specific tech specs but both will by LTE capable devices.

I’m going to try another lower end device. I’m so unhappy with my s5 experience that it seems prudent. Maybe the LG phablet is the ticket.

    • Right now I’m using the ASUS ZenFone 2 and I’m not satisfied with it. I’m waiting for the Lumia 640 but I might try the LG G Stylo.

    • Michael Barnes

Ive been waiting for the stylo there some vids on youtube it looks awesome not as powerful as the note 4 but no slouch

    • brybry

      Alcatel Idol 3

      • Deibid

        I should have ordered one at the $199.99 pre-sale price…I’m sad I didn’t :(

    • steveb944

If it’s the Lollipop upgrade, try downgrading the OS instead. OR root and take off all the Samsung crap.

      • Derek

What does that even mean? I keep hearing people say that Lollipop ruins phones? When i was running on a galaxy S4, I wanted nothing but lollipop.

        • AS118

It depends on the implementation. For me, the 5.0 update made things a lot worse on my LG G2. I was so excited for it, until I realized afterwards, that it killed a lot of the stuff on my G2 that I loved. Plus the button icons on the bottom (that you can’t change) look ridiculous now.

        • steveb944

I think it broke a few things on certain S5’s and Notes along the way. Most people are waiting for 5.1 for a good fix, but who knows when that’ll be.

I haven’t heard any complaints from the S5 on our family plan, except for battery life issues.

        • itguy08

With My S5 it caused battery life to plummet, it is still a laggy POS, it still will reboot when it feels like it. Google+ will cause a “Contacts has quit” loop, there is no way to adjust the sound (bass/treble), and it’s just a horrible experience.

Once the iPhone with 700a comes this fall this GS5 is going in the garbage.

        • Acdc1a

The S5 was never the great phone for me that the S3 and Note 2 were. It gets hot under only minor stress and the battery life is terrible. I’ve had 3 devices all do the same thing so I think I’ve ruled out a defective unit.

Lollipop has been a worthy upgrade except the additional battery drain. I used to be able to stretch it almost to an entire day. Now I’m charging at lunchtime and before I leave the office. UGH!

        • gar1

After installing lollipop on my s5 I returned it under warranty for one with kit Kat . My old and new s5 with kit Kat has been awesome . Great bluetooth range battery good . I wish it was 32 internal instead of 16 but I haven’t ran out of space . And iv owned s3 ,s4 note,2 , note 3 , and I note 4 worst phone for me was note 3 dropped text and Internet connection all the time.

    • Deibid

I’ll never buy a phone through a carrier again. My last phone through a carrier was the HTC One S, and it was great after I rooted it and through Cyanogenmod on it. But I can’t fathom the idea of spending $650+ on a phone when there are awesome choices now like the Oneplus One (Two coming soon), Alcatel Ido 3, Moto G/E/X, heck even some of the Blu phones are pretty awesome for the price.

    • Andrew Singleton

the m8 is a steal on craigslist or ebay right now. honestly best smartphone experience so far.

    • Afanasi “JJ” Bushmanov

Go for it. High end phones are so overrated nowadays. They keep on getting more and more carried away. Now they even have qHD displays which is absolutely unnecessary. They can’t leave well enough alone and focus on improving things that are important like battery life

  • Verizonthunder

Dam took you this long Cam?? I informed you weeks ago. Also I alerted you about greater Baltimore area currently upgrading to wideband.

    • Nick

Be patient. I’m sure he gets tons and tons of emails each day plus other things he has to do…

      • Verizonthunder

I do care about this site and T-Mobile. I do feel Cam is trying his best to fill the void of Davids absent but he needs to be more versatile with this site and social media.

        • Nick

Many of us regulars do. I think he is doing a great job of filling Davids place, especially with not being in the US. There’s always room for improvement, though.

        • Cam Bunton

Or.. you need to get better at reading. ;-)

        • Verizonthunder

Wow Cam way to handle mild criticism, I am sure others were more harsh than my comments. Like I said before I care about this site and aware you have a lot on your plate. Have a great day Cam.

        • Cam Bunton

I guess the winky face did nothing for you? I was kidding.

        • Verizonthunder

Cam you were not joking which you fired off three responses attacking someone who cares about the website and informing others of any news. I have a mental capacity of a middle aged adult when it comes to news and business… Games are the last thing on my mind. Just a serious friendly person. I do not pay attention to emoticons much. Have a great day Cam P. S. (waiting for T-Mobile to carry blackberry passport)

        • Cam Bunton

I’m sorry you saw them as attacks, that’s not how they were meant. I appreciate you getting in touch.

    • Cam Bunton

lol. How could you possibly have informed me weeks ago when the bulletin was only posted to T-Mobile staff on May 11?

    • Cam Bunton

Also – T-Mobile publicly announced that the Leon and G Stylo were coming. They just didn’t say when, I included that with my official T-Mobile G4 announcement, since it was included in the same press release. Read that here:

      https://www.tmonews.com/2015/04/lg-g4-coming-to-t-mobile-with-exclusive-preview-giveaway/.

      • Cam Bunton

        I posted that. Weeks ago.

  • steveb944

Anything on band 12? Either way I think I’ll keep my Alcatel preorder.

  • AS118

The Stylo looks promising, but I hope to God that LG doesn’t make the Leon worthless by giving it 4 gb of onboard storage the way it tends to with low-end phones. 8 gb for the cheap phones, and 16 for the mid-range ones should be a bare minimum nowadays.

I would also argue that 8 gb may not even be enough, but 4 gb is just criminal.

    • Nick

Lol we don’t want another optimus f6 again…

  • Michael Barnes

Boostmobile has a list price for the g stylo as 199.99

    • Nick

True. Its weird that theirs only has an 8mp rear camera though

  • Jay J. Blanco

What’s the point of new phones when tmobile new upgrade policy is trash

    • Deibid

Upgrades/subsidies don’t exist anymore! You buy a phone whenever you like! I personally always buy unlocked and carrier-free! It’s the way to go!

      • Jay J. Blanco

I like WiFi calling. So I will always have a branded phone

      • Afanasi “JJ” Bushmanov

exactly. Just buy a phone off contract. I don’t understand this obsession with high end phones. The screen is better, and it has a better camera. If you want a bigger screen, buy a tablet. If you want a better camera, buy a point and shoot.

    • gmo8492

Hasn’t their upgrade policy been the same for the past 2 years. The only thing I remember that change was the old jump program.

      • Jay J. Blanco

It use to be Tenure & Credit
now it’s tenure & on time payments.
        Retarded

        • Andrew Singleton

wrong. credit is still #1. the only difference is now if you have horrible credit, we will give you 0-down after 12 on-time payments, instead of you having to wait 3 years. it’s only gotten better. also try not to demean humans with special needs when discribing your displeasure with your cellphone carrier.

        • Jay J. Blanco

I had better deal with the old policy
          That’s Stupid.

        • Andrew Singleton

no… you’re not getting it. you would not rather deal with the old policy. the length of time to become 0 down has only shortened or remained the same. you may not argue that the policy is worse.

        • Jay J. Blanco

True but I’ve been a customer almost 3 years and since the change my deals have been worser. I’m never buying another phone on EIP

  • fhritp

What’s up with these blackberry sponsored articles?

    • Andrew Singleton

      huh?

  • doobydooby

As an ex tmobile employee, I can tell you first hand.. all phones suck just the same. There’s no perfect phone, and in general all cellphone companies screw their customers.. I mean, I need to pay a starter fee?!?! You need to pay me for joining your carrier and for the fact that I’m paying you way more than is required on a monthly basis to make your lousy cooperation money, while employees barely make any money, and get only offered part time.. I can barely understand who trains or hires the middle management in this company, and I should’ve left long time ago. No one cares about you unless you kiss ass.. sad but true.. bunch of tools.. anyways, don’t believe the hype and buy the new phones that come out. Normally they are all hyped up for no reason really..

    • gmo8492

Geez dude, what does this have to do with the article. Tmonews needs to open a disgruntled employees section of the site.

    • Deibid

You must have worked in a sucky city. I’m an ex-employee (worked a total of 4 years in retail stores), and I certainly didn’t feel that way. On the contrary, my management was sad when I left (and they still call/text me to this day to ask questions or when they need my help).

Trust me, there were many instances that I didn’t agree with while working. Even though I made it known, I was still able to perform my job accordingly.

The pay is very decent for not needing any type of degree. (starting at $11.15/hr + commision + benefits – and this was pre obama care); not many places would have given all this and especially to people not working 30 hours a week.

      • Jose

        Dear doobydooby,

I want to welcome you to the real world and inform you that not everyone shares the same sentiments as you (review Deibid’s comment and kudos to user!!!!! ). Work is Work regardless of where you are!!!! You do the best you can with the resources you have. If you don’t like the current phones then you can go back to a flip phone!!!

      • mbarnett13

        Salty much there dooby?

  • taxandspend

Why would you buy this phone instead of the Samsung Galaxy Avant? Less RAM, same processor, less internal storage. Unless it’s even cheaper…

  • MO

5.7 screen is a reason and if isnt over priced and a phablet. thats a few reasons why it take over samsung avant. For me

  • MO

I first thought windows lumina 640 but taking so long to come out .Them i saw the alcatel idol 3. But may just take this LG stylo ….

    • VG

Yep, I’m with you. Microsoft announced the 640 and 640 XL back in early March, and neither phone is available from a U.S. carrier (AT&T still has the XL listed as “coming soon”).

Microsoft is really blowing it. How on earth do they think they can compete with iOS and Android? I know they won’t be releasing any new flagships until Windows 10 is out (another big mistake, IMHO), but they can’t even get any decent mid-range phones out to market. Microsoft has really been dropping the ball the last few years, don’t see how they will ever put a serious dent in iOS and Android in the US. They seem to have no problem in getting out budget phones to the US and the rest of the world, though.

  • Andrew Singleton

i hate when i feel dumb for buying a flagship :( lol

  • fuego

The LG Leon has 8Gb of memory, but only 3GB left after system memory is taken into the picture. its fast, snappy, and relatively good looking. it is small and chunky but thats easy to get over seeing that its only $99

  • mingkee

Frankly, H631 will be another big seller as mid to high tier if the price is no more than $300. Don’t forget it has 2GB RAM which considers high spec on midrange phones.
Some may argue Sprint version is cheaper, but you have to look at the spec before making conclusion (1GB vs 2GB RAM and 8GB vs 16GB NAND).

  • Afanasi “JJ” Bushmanov

I like the way the Leon looks and I want it as an upgrade from my optimus l90. I’m hoping that the camera is better on that. If it’s not, I’m sticking with my l90.

  • M

The Stylo quadcore 1.2 GHZ Processor is starting to bother me for 289. Kinda wish they had more power for that price.

    • M

Even though i still may Buy

  • disqus_lmfkAbObqr

Can anyone speak to the call quality who currently has and uses the LG G Stylo from T-Mobile?

    • Gary Carrizales

The stylio has very good phone sound quality it’s an hd sound quality
