Android 5.0 for T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z3 finally enters testing

Screen Shot 2015-05-18 at 22.01.00

After what seems like months of silence – and the fear of abandonment – the Z3 has moved one step closer to getting its long-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Only this morning, we checked the software updates page on T-Mobile’s support site and didn’t see any change in the Z3’s progress. But just a few hours later, one of our readers checked again and saw that it is now officially in “T-Mobile Testing” which normally means that public release is only a few weeks away.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Xperia Z3 oddly and quietly vanished from T-Mobile’s online store after being discontinued, before reappearing again recently with a discounted price. It was surprising that – after just a handful of months – a flagship phone would disappear. Especially one as good as the Sony.

The folks over at Xperia Blog have been keeping an eye on potential update builds, and if their information is good, the Xperia Z3’s update should be Android 5.0.2 and it will support bands 2, 4 and 12.

Let’s hope it doesn’t take to long to end testing, because I can’t help but feel T-Mobile’s Xperia Z3 users are now more than a little frustrated at the seeming lack of development.

Finally!!!! I love the z3 but no update on anything for the longest time I was thinking of ditching it

  • substance

About time!!! I hope it is released before May ends. It would be a double dose of goodness if they unlocked band 12 during the same update or sooner, as well.

    • sushimane

      Yeah me too

  • ” J.D. “

Finally ! ! Yes there is a god – If the update does what I think it will do Then sony has made me a real android user / After 7+Yrs with blackberry I made the switch & sony seemed to be the way to go. O & of corse 7+Yrs with our favorite magenta carrier T-MOBILE …

What I’d like to know is, when will they enable LTE band 12, and will it be included in this Lollipop update? They’ve said it would be enabled in May, and here we are most of the way thru May.

That’s the main reason why even tho the Z3 is my favorite Android phone, I haven’t bought one yet because it doesn’t support band 12 (and I don’t get why Sony didn’t just have it already enabled straight out the box like Samsung did with the Note 4 and S6). Once they enable it, then I’ll consider it because it’s still a great deal on a great phone, especially now that the price has come down a bit.

Or I might just keep on waiting for the Z4, if it’s ever released here.

    • dontsh00tmesanta

      Yes it enables b12

  • dontsh00tmesanta

Should be 5.1 since they took forever

  • Verizonthunder

Well if previous reports indicate late may for update we still have a chance.

  • TexMex1234

    Yeahh!!!! Finally!!! Can’t wait!

“Still no lollipop for the S4” Anyway it would be expected that they would update the Z3 since it was just released a not to long ago. But like some keep pointing out the Xperia Z and Z1s will probably die with jellybean. Which is just very unfortunate.

    • ” J.D. “

      Z1- Z1s is getting 5.0.2 lollipop

      • gmo8492

        Xperia Z though?

        • ” J.D. “

I didn’t check on Z I would imagine it would be covered But don’t put that’s not set in stone.

        • gmo8492

Yeah, I say the Xperia Z because Sony teased an image of it with it running lollipop on their website, but it wasn’t officially in development at the time. Sadly I highly doubt T-mobile will update it since it seems to have completely abandoned it after Sony released the kitkat update for it last year.

        • MatthewPDX

The Z will not be getting anymore updates from TMo. Flash official Sony C6616 International KitKat on that sucker. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll get the Lollipop update.

  • Be thankful you are not a ZTE zmax user. We are off the radar. Also we were promised LTE band 12…nothing yet

  • Jarobusa

Finally! Not to be greedy, but will we get 5.1.1?

    • MatthewPDX

      Good luck.

    • Cam Bunton

Haha.. Yeah, who knows at this point. Maybe before Christmas.

  • Logan S

Free the Z3! Unlock the bootloader!

    • IceMan

Why is it locked down so hard? The international version isn’t, so you know T-Mobile had a say in this. Do they often lock the bootloaders on their phones?

      • Logan S

On the contrary, T-mobile’s phones are usually the desirable one because they are unlocked! They are also the ones with the most bands. AT&T’s and VZW’s are the ones that are always locked (don’t misread as SIM-lock; VZW’s are SIM-unlocked, but bootloader locked).

Sony locked bootloader is an aberration. I understand that unlocking bootloader will disable access to Sony’s proprietary camera/image processing, but T-mobile & Sony should let the phone owners decide.

  • iMotoXperiaGalaxy

T-Mobile’s best phone running Android, no question!

  • Stone Cold

Woo hoo great news to wake up to.

  • Joe P

Sorry, Sony. The flimsy port covers and sloooow upgrade made me jump ship to the Nexus 6.

    • TaylorW86

meh. Port covers are strong enough and you got an extra one in the box.

    • AS118

Yeah, the port covers are annoying. The Z3’s seem better than the Z1’s though, so there’s that. I hear that the Z4 may have gotten rid of the cover for the charging port entirely though, which would be good news.

If / when they come out with the Z4 compact, I’ll probably grab that when my G2 gets long in the tooth.

    • Luke Savage

Yah, I jumped ship when Tmobile discontinued the Z3 back in March. It’s too bad too because I liked the Z3 but Sony and Tmobile have a huge issue with updates for the Sony phones. If they updated Sony’s more frequently, I would still be a Sony user. Maybe someday, Sony will listen to their users. They could beat Samsung hands down if it wasn’t for support for upgrades. I hated my Samsung S5. Sony Xperia Z3 is far superior.

  • Torry Skurski

Finally! The Band 12 update was scheduled for “May 2015” and I was starting to think they forgot about that page considering May is almost over. I bought the Z3 back in October for band 12 and have been disappointed about it’s missing band since then. Other than, I love the phone. Glad to see it really is coming now.

  • ip247365

when’s the Galaxy s4 upgrade coming?

  • AS118

Somebody in my family just upgraded from the Z1S to the Z3, and I”m not excited about this announcement, because the 5.0 update for my G2 seriously cocked up my G2. Battery drains crazy fast now, the phone gets hot quick while running easy tasks, and many of the problems stuck around even after I factory reset the phone.

And the new buttons on the bottom look dumb and are harder to interpret, and all of the custom LG skins for the G2 totally vanished. If I could roll the phone back to Kitkat easily, I would.

Any word for Xperia Z owners from Tmo getting lollipop?

  • Geoffrey Weston

Any word as to when 5.1 will arrive on the Z3?
