T-Mobile releases first 2021 Scam and Robocall Report

T-Mobile has been busily fighting off scammers and robocalls off of its network. And today, the Un-carrier has released its first ever end-of-year wireless scam report.

In the report, T-Mo revealed that there has been an increase of 116% in scam attempts through Dec. 14 of this year. The industry is even predicted to receive 110 billion calls this year. But despite these numbers, T-Mobile has proudly revealed that they were able to block over 21 billion scam calls. This is all thanks to their T-Mobile Scam Shield blocker.

Scam Shield has also been able to block 3.5x more calls compared to AT&T’s solution. Additionally, T-Mobile reports that its “Scam Likely” label has a better than 99% accuracy rate than its rival network.

“Attempted scam calls hit record highs in 2021, but with Scam Shield we identified or blocked over 21 billion calls this year – or 700 calls per second! – for customers. We are the only provider protecting every single customer, regardless of their plan or device,” T-Mobile Consumer Group President, Jon Freier said. “Scammers are relentless, but so are we. We are doing everything we can to make their job as hard as possible. Scam Shield leverages T-Mobile’s powerful network to help keep our customers protected in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Scam Shield was launched by T-Mobile in July 2020 to protect customers against scammers. You can read the full report here.

Scam Shield doesn’t work very well. I blocks needed calls and let’s spam go through. Lately I keep getting a call from Citibank about an unauthorized charge on my credit card. I don’t have Citibank and it sounds like a cheap robo call.

Give contacts permission to the app, and after an occasional false positive, you can favorite the caller (tap on the star button). This will ensure no blocking for that number.

That works with family & friends, but not for support from like Apple (issue I had). I have noticed spammer/scammers are spoofing the number of big companies like the ones I keep getting lately from Citibank.

I see. I’ve only had one false positive blocked calls in 16 months, and that was a call from my wife!

By the way, I do still receive lots of spam & scam calls, but I have two advantages:
          1. I use Google Assistant call screening on my Pixel. It’s fantastic.
          2. My phone number’s area code is from the previous state I lived in, so seeing a number with that area code is a dead giveaway!

I get about 10x less spam calls on my T-Mobile phone than I do on my Verizon work phone. Scam shield works very well for me.

Scam Shield is fairly useful on calls, but a failure with spam texts. I receive about 10 spam texts a day, and they appear to be related. I want the ability to block with keywords, and have this provided by T-Mobile.

    • Mr. Blob

Try Google Messages. It’s been blocking spam texts very well for me. It takes a little while to train, but the it works well.

it simply does not work nor is it supposed to work

T-Mobile reports that its “Scam Likely” label has a better than 99% accuracy rate than its rival network.

    This is… confusing…

Please remember to report to T-mobile if any cracks went thru. I always do it. Just do it from the app. Its free.
