T-Mo Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 3 and Note 4 all get software updates

Before we all get too excited, no, it’s not Android 5.0 Lollipop. However great that would be. Today, three popular Samsung flagship models on T-Mobile’s network received over-the-air updates.

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Note 4 received an update which included Chinese language support for the first time. The update isn’t huge, but it’s not the smallest either. Pushing in at around 130MB. The phone’s pop-up message displays the usual notice about performance enhancements, bug fixes and durability improvements However, in the support pages (which recently got a redesign), T-Mobile notes that the only new feature is Chinese language support.

You can read the release notes for the Samsung Galaxy S5 here (software version G900TUVU1CNK2) , and the Galaxy Note 4 here (software version N910TUVU1ANK4).

T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 3 also received an OTA update (N900TUVUDNK3), which includes free inflight texting support. So, if you happen to be on a GoGo flight anytime soon, you’ll be able to text using the inflight Wi-Fi on your Note 3 for the first time.

Thanks to all who sent in messages.

The in-flight wifi texting feature via GoGo was active on the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 well before the program ever went live officially. Truth be told, the capability seemed to degrade once the program went live officially. I should know, I have both the Galaxy Note 3 and Note 4 for T-Mobile, and I’m a flight attendant with a monthly GoGo subscription. I’m not sure why it’s being touted as a new feature for the new update…

    • D1 Netz

I can confirm your experience with my Note 3 and my note 4 before updates

  • Paul Bakers

My phone froze after the update. GN3. I had to get a replacement.

  • Deres

What is this “Android.UI” message giving me black screens all the time on my Galaxy Note 3. What is it?

  • H Nathan Harper

I hope this fixed the GPS problems on the GN4.

    • SEBA

      What’s wrong with GPS?

      • H Nathan Harper

Mine constantly loses signal and location, or becomes extremely inaccurate to the point that it recalculates my route.

        • ME TOO!!! I’ve been on with countless T-Mo and Samsung reps. All Sammy says there is to do now is send it in for repair. I don’t really trust that, because I’ve had THREE exchanges through T-Mo (not warranty exchanges, the 2 week in-store exchanges) and all of them have had the same issue. I’m looking forward to the drive home to see if this has been fixed.

        • g2a5b0e

My girlfriend & I are both having the same issue. We were driving home from work one night when she noticed it. Mine was working just fine. The next day, mine started doing the same thing. No bueno.

        • an0nim0

Mine’s been problematic since day one — taking anywhere from 1-5 minutes to get a lock, and never getting a solid one (FWIW, I leave WiFi enabled at all times and have Location mode set to High accuracy); fortunately I know my way around town, and I’ve pretty much Sensorly’d everywhere I go — but I’m not looking forward to my next road trip.

EDIT: I should mention, I have yet to try the new update.

        • Have you guys tried using GPS with a different app? Perhaps Waze instead of Google Maps? to see if you’re having GPS issues with a certain app or does it happen in other apps. For me, I’ve had issues with Google Maps here and there, but not with Waze so far.

        • I tried Waze before this update but not after yet. I’ll try it again.

        • Trevor Traub

My note 3 did this exact thing and other peoples note 3s did not. Upgraded to the 4 and those issues are not present. Interesting to hear of you experiencing the same thing. I am begining to think that some GPS radios in some units are just lemons :-/

Any wifi finickyness by chance? As in webpages nearly refusing to load occasionally but cell service and other devices on the WiFi are good?

        • H Nathan Harper

Actually, after the update my Wi-Fi disconnected and I had to reboot my phone before it could scan any connections again. Hopefully that’s a one off.

    • H Nathan Harper

      Side by side with a gs5, gs5 gets a lock on 27 of 27 satellites… gn4 13 of 27 after the update

      • D1 Netz

per TMO store manager and discussion with TMO Engineer there are issues with the update affecting GPS and possibly reception, too. my Note 4 was fine before update and has now weaker signal, 4G or even edge until it finds LTE again. These are locations I have ran test on regularly. Including GPS problems where my apps were usually on good GPS right away. It has be recommended to back up and restore in order to get rid of last update. Engineer with Note 4 experienced supposedly same issues. after update on Note 4

    • KO99

fwiw my GN4 GPS works fine, actually faster and more accurate than my Nexus 5..

  • Justsomecommentor

I’m sure there are other ways to add language support to a smartphone. Why should there be a firmware update for it? It is unnecessary, unless you actually know the language.

  • Toasted_Cracker

I just received the update on my note 4. It now has new kernel and also a new baseband. I’m assuming that means theirs more to it than just a language update.

    • skittle

Same here. I got the update and saw that kernel and baseband changed. Seems like more than language.

  • Don Goyo

“Beginning November 24, the Samsung Galaxy S 5 will have a mandatory software update” mandatory? There has to be something more to it, 130mb for Chinese support?

    • Bart

Must include some software the NSA forgot to have Samsung include from the factory. lol

      • Don Goyo

        shhhhh…. they’re here….

        • Luis Sergio Ortega

  • qpinto

the LG G3 has been getting updates as of late as well. I received 2 OTA updates within the last 7 days as well.

  • sharmarke

I have a note 2 and every carrier except t mobile has kit kat, that’s why I haven’t got gn4 yet because t mobile forgot us

    • Eugene

      that’s true..prolly never go a t-mobile branded flagship devise anymore…

      • skittle

What I like about branded is a few T mobile apps. Visual Voice mail and WiFi Calling. I dont pay the extra for the visual message part, I just like that I do not have to “call in” to hear my voice message. But, even that’s weak. All the other bloat ect. is not worth it.

        • thepanttherlady

Visual Voicemail is an app that can be downloaded from the Play Store. I’ve had it on my Xperia Z, Z1 & Z2 as well as OnePlus One. All are international unlocked phones.

  • Phillip Bee

Anything for the Note E? Or does it already have these features?

Cam, the support page for the Note 3 is wrong.. free in flight texting was rolled out on N900TUVUDNF9. That was rolled out in September. This update is N900TUVUDNK3.
The note 3 has had in flight texting for several months now. I’ve personally used it and it works great.

  • mingkee

    Unfortunately, it’s Simp Chinese.
If you’re strict on Trad Chinese, sell your Samsung and get LG, HTC, or Sony phones (they have both).

  • Bori

Just downloaded the update, and my Note does seem snappier, but that’s as much as I’ve noticed.

    • Vlad

Kind of feel the same, feels like recents button lag is even less right now.
And camera/gallery duo is faster as well.
Guess the new kernel or something else working well.
Definitely not just Chinese language update.

      • Bori

Just checked the camera and you are correct, it’s gotten quicker. Definitely other improvements came with it.

        • MadJoe

          Which Note? 3 or 4?

        • Bori

          Note 4

  • jefski

The blacks are popping out better in the texts/Web pages etc. Speed tests are same

    • defcon888

What about the whites?….or latinos? or native Americans?…..sorrry, had to say it!

  • Marco braggion

Just downloaded the up date and I really don’t see a difference

    • Sexual Harassment Panda

      do you read Chinese?

  • Jefski

In the app section, gear vr and gear vr shell has shown up

  • Jefski

    I also saw mipi test

  • Marcelo_L

Do I HAVE to say it for the umpteenth time?

    Really, TMo?

    Here goes….

Where is the F_____ Galaxy Note II update to KitKat 4.4.4?

    Pheew…that feels better.

    • T-Mobile engineer (anonymous)

The Note 2 is not receiving 4.4.4, instead it will jump straight to 5.0 around 2nd quarter 2015.

      • Sharmarke

You’re lying, it’s past it’s two required upgrade from Google

      • Marcelo_L

Yeah, right. I’ll believe it when I see it.

      • wtf_tmobile

So my note 2 running 4.3 will not receive any updates at all for another 6+ months? That’s crazy, seems like every other Samsung is or has been getting updated recently except for the tmobile note 2. Verizon model already has kit kat…tmobile is bs

      • Marcelo_L

Why would TMo take the GN2 and put off 4.4.4 in favor of 5.0 for effectively 7 months (I don’t believe it when someone says 2Q 2015, that it’d mean April. More like late June, IME)? Ludicrous.

    • bob90210

      It’s at cyanogenmod . com

      • Marcelo_L

Don’t be ridiculous. Those ROMs don’t support the SNote app. But just to make it clearer. I’ll edit my own original post to make it clear for folks who’re “mistaken”.

  • William Kestle

Still no update on my end for galaxy s 5…

  • Lollipop is Android’s Vista.

First off, it’s ugly. How someone could decide that going from 3D UI features to 2D, from transparency to solid colors, especially bland colors from a tiny palette, is bewildering.

But the worst feature is that ART is just not ready for primetime. It does not perform as aggressive optimizations as Dalvik, so the apps are now slow and, on slower devices, quite laggy. My Nexus 7 2012 is now barely usable after the update.

I feel quite disappointed at and hosed by Google.

    • skittle

Thanks for waking me up from the Lollipop love fest! I think you hit the nail on the head Augustine. My Nexus 7 2012 is sick after the Lollipop update. I cannot bear using it. ART was supposed to make it faster.

      • BROKEN

Art does make it faster. 5.0 came with encryption. That’s why you lost the speed on your nexus. If you want the speed back head over to XDA. You can make your phone fast again by taking the encryption off.

      • SAD

how did nexus 7 get update already? any date on when SG Note 3 will get Lollipop? Dumb tmobile

    • BROKEN

Wow….dude don’t talk about stuff you don’t know. Your nexus is slow because it’s encrypted. It’s Google’s way of kicking NSA.

If you want the speed back head over to XDA.

      • Updated devices are not encrypted by default, only devices with Lollipop out of the box are when first initialized.

  • Chris

Any chance it fixed the “no mms on wifi calling” issue?

  • buzfunk

Note 3 here, inflight texting already works. Source: Used it two weeks ago on my AA flight.

  • Sexual Harassment Panda

Do I have to update? I really don’t want or need this.

  • jp

I believe it was also pushed to the S4.

  • Anon

Only a suggestion, download “Timeline Usage Pro” from the app store. Amazing stuff. I believe you’ll see what’s changed. Seems to me, “Security Storage” is something like 120mb of that new update? And here I thought it was gonna be “KNOX” or “System Manager Application” a.k.a NSA T-Mobile Trojan?

  • nano66

After updating my Note 4, WIFI is not connecting, Please help!!!!!!!!

    • jitu

      Not connecting my wifi

      • jitu

        • jitu

          Plz help me

        • carlos

          Do a master reset.

  • Mrlordsinister

Note 3 battery life before update would run for 36 or more hours now less than 24. WTF!?! And the new OS seems sluggish. Sometimes it takes a second or two to realize that I want it to do something. And no I don’t have multiple apps running in the background. I hope this isn’t permanent because I love my note 3.

    • duke nukem

      Lol permanent. Shit sucks

    • R00t

It’ll be fixed with 5.0. Its a known bug, its not permanent

  • robert16bv

My Tmo S5 is really slow after this last update. How can I remove it?

  • Guest

Interesting uncarrier move in the new update apparently: https://twitter.com/search?f=realtime&q=DT%20ignite&src=typd

  • Jason Johnston

So, I complain to T-Mobile about this? Cause since the update, my battery life isn’t as long, my phone has completely locked up on me twice, and it just now restarted itself. . .

    • HeatFan786

      What phone?

      • Jason Johnston

Note 3. I wrote to them on their facebook, got a reply. . . they said they haven’t heard of it and suggested I factory reset the phone. . . I’m not particularly hard up enough to rush into doing that. I’ll wait and see if more people have the problem and maybe there’ll be a bug fix. If not, then maaaaybe it’s just my phone and I’ll have to troubleshoot with Samsung, directly.

        • HeatFan786

Oh, Samsung’s customer service is lousy. If it wasn’t for the Note 4, I would be using a Nexus 6 right now. Most of them are scripted shills. Ignore them and I think the next update ought to fix bugs.

        • duke nukem

That’s it for ur phone. That update was purposely done so u can buy a newer model. I learned my lesson with the note 2. U can always root, best way to save ur phone

        • r00t

I believe you don’t know what ur talking about, its called bugs or glitches in the software. Hence 5.0 coming for improved experience and bug fixes. That’s ridiculous if anyone thinks that they put out updates to brick or mess up ur phone for you to buy new one. If that’s the case they would just stop updating the thing. But anyway, maybe its a bug or maybe ur memory was clogged and in order to free it it restarted. Its nothing seriously wrong with ur phone, OP

        • duke nukem

Whatever turd. Where do these bugs come from then? B4 update good smooth n long lasting battery, after, total opposite.

        • salvador

Constantly my note 3 is off and this means no alarm sounds obviously I get late to work what is up with this problem.

  • jass

Do you have to update? Anyway around it if you do not update.

  • Larry Phelps

and why the hell did T-Mobile think that their North American subscriber base with an S5 needed a Chinese language update?? How about rolling out the 4.4.4 update or 5.0 to fix the damn bluetooth dropouts when I’m trying to listen to my music over a $400 pair of bluetooth headphones!!!

What’s the next update that they plan on rolling out that I don’t need?? The Martian language package??

    • $400???

You spent 400 on headphones? lol you got ripped off

      • Larry Phelps

$300 with about a $75 3 year warranty.. Not exactly $400. What the hell do you care.. They only skip on the S5 due to piss poor Bluetooth issues.

        • corruptintenz

Bluetooth on the S5 works fine with my 90$ headphones. Look to the headset for the issue.

        • Xbrotha

          LOL … poor guy.

Do people really get warranty on headphones? Dont they normally come with a 1 year warranty anyways?

I guess it makes sense if you want to abuse it to get free ones.

        • donnyBoy

Amen to that^^ what moron wastes 400$ on a music experience he utilizes maybe 10% of the day.

  • defcon888

I don’t know if this update is the reason for my Note 3 acting weird, but I am suspicious. Sometimes the a dialog pops up saying something failed. I can’t close it, I can’t power button off/on. I hold the power button down and the restart box pops up, but the “failed” box is on top of it so I can’t pick restart. So, the only way to do it is take off my case, pull the battery and then restart. Also, sometimes my phone with either restart by itself or shut off completely.

I am a patient man for sure, but these little things really tick me off. Every other carrier is getting the 4.4.4 update and some are getting the Lollipop update…but we at T-Mobile are just sitting, and waiting, and waiting.

    • duke nukem

Updates on older models should b done with caution. Shit will decrease performance in every way. It’s done so u can go out n buy a newer model.

    • donnyBoy

Bud it sounds like u just have bugs. Before the update did you have any disabled or (if rooted) uninstalled system apps? When you run an update it only replaces the system apps it reads are currently on your phone. The only others added are apps native to the update. If this was your situation it means your running your phone without all the apps needed to run its conputations, processes and tasks needed. I would recommend either taking your phone in or if your savvy enough take it in your own hands and find your stock firmware to flash and revert back too and than manually update your system with all the stock intact. You have a samsung device so for you its relatively easy through either kies or odin for the most part.

  • Amos

I don’t know what everyone is complaining about. I had Android 4.4.4 on my T-Mobile Galaxy S4 and I upgraded to the Note 4 a couple weeks ago, and I also have 4.4.4 on it.

  • damellman

I understand everyone has their own personal problems. But can anyone tell me what’s really in this update and why? Because the article doesn’t explain SHIT! P.s . I have the s
    galaxy 4

  • donnyBoy

Not true. Im running outside developed lollipop on my note2 and it runs smoother so far than my note2 ever did on stock out of the box. Just about every aspect of my old dog note 2 is improved. You just gotta know the right tricks bud

    • duke nukem

Well I didn’t touch up on that part bud, partly because I was just stating a fact. But yes to unlock any notes or better yet, any android phones, you would need to ROOT your phone and PUSH IT from there.

  • asdfasd

when is lollipop coming to GS5??
