Galaxy Update

With all this android talk recently, I have heard read a bunch of questions regarding the Samsung Android.  Well, I have been listening but haven’t found it entirely appropriate to comment on all the goings on in the tech world.  I warn you, what you are about to read is everything you need to know, and is known, about the Samsung Galaxy.  Some of what is to follow is made up of rumors, others facts, and maybe some personal opinion.  With that being said, head on past the break for all the information and then share your opinions, thoughts and beliefs in the comments.

So, I see you made it past the break safely, you must share a love for this phone with me.   It has definitely been a while since we have talked about any Samsung Android phone, and well, not much has actually happened on the confirmed end.  As expected, the Samsung Galaxy landed in Europe and has been enjoyed by all.  In fact, you can drool over an unboxing video (Thanks Tracy and Matt) and even a short review (courtesy of PhoneArena)!

There has even been an interesting, umm, confusing, AMAZING promo video.

Aside from that, the only other news regarding the Samsung Galaxy is that it has a white variant (thanks to The Unwired), which in my opinion is absolutely beautiful.

Now, this is where Samsung Android news takes a turn.  I will leave it to you to decide if its a good or bad turn.  About a month ago a new phone passed its wifi certificate test.  Its name?  The Samsung Galaxy Lite (cue dramatic music).  Not much was known, or is known, about the Galaxy Lite (or the I5700) but it has wifi! (Engadget)

Then, not too long ago, the Samsung Hub uncovered the FCC filing for the Galaxy Lite.  The only thing it conformed was that it will have GSM bands (but whos?) and its an actual phone with a 1000 mA battery.

But wait, there’s more!  Someone at FrAndroid decided to out the Galaxy Lite by leaking an image of this Samsung Android phone.  From what it appears, the Galaxy Lite is indeed a cheaper version (if you can call it that a variant) of the Samsung Galaxy and may be a head on competitor to the HTC Click.  All the recent rumors have this pegged for Wifi (well that looks real), possible 3G, touch screen (did you expect anything else), android and a trackball (YAY!). (Engadget)

Okay, I promised some opinion so here it is (and I am fully aware that this could come back to me negatively).  The Galaxy Lite may not be an Android phone and it may not be for T-Mobile USA.  Lets start with it being an Android phone (or not).  If you notice, the picture does not have a home button, and that happens to be required for Android phones.  Maybe Samsung hid it on the side, or made its a long click function, but who knows?  I would say it is still an Android phone though, so I’m not throwing that out.  It just seems odd.  Now, the problem with it coming to T-Mobile USA.  There has been no confirmation that this will be coming to T-Mobile USA, we don’t even know what bands it supports.  Sure, the jump from previous Galaxy rumors is easy, but is it the right assumption?  Call it a hunch, a dream, a fantasy, whatever you want but I’m still holding out for the I7500 until something definite comes out.

Andrew, serious props on doing this. I for one appreciate it.

I really hope this (or the Galaxy proper) comes to T-Mo. I’m due for an upgrade and having been sitting on it for 1.5 years; T-Mo’s phone selection is extremely lacking. The Galaxy and Morrison are my final straws or I drop them for someone else…someone else with a more sophisticated phone line-up

i Sure do hope that the galaxy comes to tmo U.S. because i have a G1 and the only phone i want is the galaxy its so sexy ill wait as long as it takes to get it.

  • Brian

The phone looks amazing (with 3.5mm headphone jack, and 5 megapixel camera), but isn’t there still the issue with the phone only having 128MB of RAM?

  • Patrick

i don’t think there’s a lack NOW like there used to be. On the smart phone end, you have the Curve 2, G1, myTouch, Touch Pro 2, Dash 3G, then the Behold and Memoir(and that other touchscreen samsung…the orange one lol)…if you wanna take it back a bit, you have the Pearl Flip(which I still think is an AWESOME phone), so I think it’s made STRIDES over the past year. This time last year NONE of those phones were out. The first one to come out was the Pearl Flip back in September. That’s 8 phones over the past year…thats ALOT if you ask me. Then on top of all of that the Gravity 2, the other full-keyboard samsung phone(which I still think is pretty decent in my opinion)…we have ALOT of samsung phones lol

    just let it have UMA.

then it wold work n my office and work in my home.

to me the killer phone for all time would be a mash of a g-1 and a samsung katalyst.

  • alex

The I5700 could be the new Behold(and be androidless)

  • T-Mobile will likely get the Lite version. Why? It’s colorful. For whatever reason, tmo tends to stray away from white/black/silver combo on samsungs. Like being TOO professional might hurt business. Dimes to dollars we get the lite version (UMA?) while the non-lite fades into obscurity or heads to Sprint/Verizon.

The non-lite version is already in the wild. If you like the device just drop the money and get it. It is a great phone imo, I’ve had it for two weeks and am very glad I picked it up. Coming from the G1 it has felt like nothing but an upgrade. It doesn’t feel like a brick in my pocket (it really is shockingly small and light in comparison) the screen is incredible, battery life is better, then obviously there is the headphone jack and built in storage. And yes the euro version that I bought from ebay Germany does have T-Mo’s 3G. I was in Chicago this last weekend and made quite a bit of use of it for maps and sherpa.

Hey since this phone is samsung, does that mean that it wont require the data plan like all the other touch samsung phones? If so I will get this phone the day it comes out

  • earl of preston

the galaxy is available from an american website, but it’s unlocked. i’ve been thinking about getting it, but i sorta want to wait until it gets sold by t-mobile

    her’s the site:

Wow, is this thing ever going to show up here or what…? I passed on mytouch 3G waiting for this, now the rumor is it may never come to the U.S.? Galaxy Lite may be a cure but I hope it’s Android or else it’s a deal breaker. COME ON SAMSUNG..release it already!

  • Dave

this is confirmed information by Samsung that this galaxy has 192mb ram who ever published the specs made an error i guess or maybe it was pre-release spec so maybe samsung decided to upgrade the RAM on this device but it is confirmed that it has 192mb
