T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and S7 edge now receiving software updates

galaxys7edgegoldblack

UPDATE: T-Mobile has updated its Galaxy S7 and S7 edge support pages to confirm these updates, saying that they include “security updates.”

Less than one week after hitting store shelves, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have started receiving software updates.

The T-Mobile versions of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are both getting software updates this morning. The updates are fairly small, weighing in at around 41MB, and they include security improvements. Here’s the official changelog for both updates:

What’s new
– The security of your device has been improved.
– A software update can include, but is not limited to:

  • Device stability improvements, bug fixes.
  • New and/or enhanced features.
  • Further improvements to performance.

Security is important when you’re using a device that contains all kinds of personal data, so you Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners should keep an eye out for your devices update. If you haven’t yet gotten the update on your phone, you can check for it manually by going into Settings > SYSTEM tab > About device > Software update > Check for updates.

Let us know when the update hits your S7 or S7 edge!

Thanks, Matt, Luis, and Jonathan!

cool, I do have some app crashes and hopefully this will stabilize the OS

  • Zbum

Still did not fix the SD card icon coming up after reboot…..annoying.

    • Ascertion

I can swipe mine away and it never comes back until I reboot.

      • jbworldwide1

Exactly. I don’t see an annoyance with that.

      • Zbum

yes only on the reboot…..thought it might be the card….so I’m not the only one having issues with it.

      • jonathan3579

Prior to the update, it appeared every few minutes for me but it seems that it has been corrected now.

        • dontsh00tmesanta

weird most of us only shows up on reboot

        • jonathan3579

It’s a pretty widespread issue on XDA. I was even asked to buy and comped for a new SD card by T-Mobile. Thankfully the issue seems mostly resolved for now.

        • dontsh00tmesanta

Most I’ve seen on xda and reddit are on boot only

        • nofreelunch16

have the same issue as jonathan3579 where it appears every few minutes as well and swiping at times doesn’t make it go away.

        • dontsh00tmesanta

Did you format the sd card from within the phone? Thats what I always do when switching phones

    • dontsh00tmesanta

can swipe away after reboot….dont see why its an issue.

  • Mike

Guess it didn’t unlock the bootlogger?

    • rgao007

      …the bootlogger?

  • chan

with the updates the performance is way crispy

    • morrisp

      Is “crispy” good or bad(?)

  • Jimmy James

Hello. I would like to say my phone is slower. Noticeable pausing after clicking on an icon.
-Update: Rebooting again after the update seemed to resolve the issue.

  • Joe

And us Galaxy s6 owners are now considered second class citizens that get the shaft like usual. Good job at supporting your custumers Samsung and t-mobile.

    • Walt

Go with an iphone. Updates that last four years! And come out regularly

      • Joe

Android is superior in many ways to ios so I refuse to go to iphone. But I will be getting a nexus next as they keep phones updated for at least 2 years and they get updated fast.

        • dontsh00tmesanta

          yes get a nexus

        • jeffy

superior in what way, when i see you crying about not getting the latest software. So much for being superior. LOL

        • jonathan3579

There’s pros and cons to both Android and iOS. Stop being an egotistical jerk.

        • Philip

I am a tech guy and I never buy iphone too. Never use it before and never will.

    • dontsh00tmesanta

this happens with all samsung phones. this will happen to the s7 when the note 6 is out.

    • Bradley Karas

Isn’t T-mobile its completely on Samsung

      • Joe

It’s also T-mobiles fault. You do know that after Samsung makes the software it goes to T-mobile and they need to also add stuff. But it is mostly Samsung’s fault.

    • ssjchaseutley

Samsung released 5.1 to my old S4 but Tmo blocked the update (probably to push sales is my guess). Meanwhile Verizon customers got the update.

      Blame Tmobile.

      • Joe

O yeah forgot about that. So yeah T-mobile is also just as bad as Samsung.

      • T Redd

Really? That’s why the s4 didn’t get the lollipop update?

        • ssjchaseutley

Yep. Theres actually a very lengthy thread about it on the Tmo forums. At first, a rep stated the update wasnt available. Then somekne pointed out that all Verizon users already received it. The rep replied simply by saying to check the updates page at tmobile.com.

Basically it in a nut shell. People theorized that they withheld the update in order to push future sales of the impending S7.

        • T Redd

Sad and pathetic. I hope they dont pull that it again on other galaxy flagships.

        • ssjchaseutley

Who knows but aside from that whole debacle, I’m still very satisfied with TMo.

      • Robin Kirby

You do realize that the updates come from Google right! Blame Google and Samsung because they would be the ones that release the software to T-mobile. The EOL(end of life) was around a year and a half ago for the S4. EOL is typically around 1.5-2 years from the release date of a particular device.

        • jonathan3579

I’m sorry but you’re flat wrong. Google provides the base software and the manufacturer builds on top of that. Google does not build software for anything other than their Pixel and Nexus line. Please check your facts before spewing nonsense and giving misinformation as fact.

  • Jason Caprio

Seems if you have even a recent previous product, Samsung/T-Mobile forget about you and simply want you to buy the next thing out, while a device that is only 6 months old is considered unsupported. I am sick of it. The S7 will be getting a nice amount of updates until the Note 6 is relased, and the S7 will be neglected as well. I have a Galaxy Note 5 and nearly 6 months after Marshmallow has been released, we are all still on buggy 5.1.1 Lollipop. This is completely unacceptable to have to wait THIS LONG for an update from a leading brand’s flagship product. My girlfriend’s Nexus 6P on 6.0.1 runs like a DREAM, and I am so close to selling this Note 5 and getting myself a Nexus 6P based mostly on the fact that the battery life CRUSHES my Note 5 and runs 10x faster with better memory management, despite having 3GB of RAM instead of 4GB. This will definitely be the last Samsung Galaxy phone that I will make the mistake of buying. My next phone without a doubt will be a Nexus. Faster updates and no bloat! The S7 I am sure suffer a similar fate, having 6+ month delays on getting a new Android version. Never again!

    • nycplayboy78

I have the Nexus 6P 128GB model and I LOVE IT!!!! 100% pure Android goodness without the bloat…Come on the water is fine we would love to have you :)

      • Jason Caprio

Me and my gf swapped sim cards and traded phones for a few days, and I was just stunned by the performance and battery life of the Nexus 6P. Furthermore it has excellent signal reception on cell and wifi compared to my Note 5. I think realistically I am going to wait and see how the next Nexus looks and most like get that one. I am DONE with Samsung!

        • nycplayboy78

I too use to be a Sammy FanBoy but in essence I am an Android FanBoy….My only complaint with Nexus is that it is usually behind the curve when it comes to technology like using the latest processors, chips, and SoC, etc. I can definitely say that when the 2016 Nexus comes out I will be checking for it and upgrading :)

    • jeffy

lol! things android users cry about.

      • Jason Caprio

I assume you’re an iPhone user. Don’t get me wrong, iPhones are great products, I just prefer Android, and I have experience with both because my work provides us with iPhones. I wouldn’t consider my rant above as “crying”, but more like frustration and have learned my lesson when it comes to updates dealing with manufacturers/carriers and Nexus phones are the way to go.

        • jonathan3579

Nice respectable reply to a rude person. Kudos!

        • Philip

I prefer Android. Got so many free paid apps on Android. Why go anywhere else? Plus Google can shut out their service like Maps, Gmail, Drive, etc to Apple at any time.

    • Philip

Yep. Look how they abandoned the Tab S and the Tab Pro. No more update. Samsung is sick!

    • Ascertion

The S6 devices and S5 even are getting Marshmallow. What do you mean they’re not supporting the devices anymore?

      • Jason Caprio

Yes there is word about Marshmallow but none of the devices have actually received it yet! My Note 5 is still “Up to Date” with 5.1.1 Lollipop. This delay is getting out of hand. I can understand a month or two delay, but 6 months after major Android release is completely unacceptable. There is no ETA and for all we know we might not get Marshmallow until April or May.

    • jrno1

Your correct waited forever for marshmallow on my 6edge plus:/ I just jumped to the 7 edge and its bootloader is locked:(( very nice phone but i still miss my nexus. Having a locked bootloader is kind of against the whole “uncarrier” T-Mobile saying isn’t it?

      • Its for Enterprise customers and security. You have NO reason to jailbreak or “root” the phone. If that’s your thing, you need to look at an unlocked carrier model and hope for the best.

        • jrno1

          Mind your plate

  • livewire1981

I felt that my S7 Edge has poor network connection. That could be countless things, but coming from the Note 5, I could tell an instant difference. Including music streaming and even general call quality at the office. Maybe that is part of the fix.

    • Richard Darrington

It might be the phone I had that issue with the v10 and its replacement was better. My s7 is perfect with reception though

  • JJCommonSense

Omg people chill out.. you’ll get the update when you get it.. trust me.. you arent missing a whole lot.. and if u hate the update policy for your phone so much, just get JUMP ON DEMAND and get a new device with new software… it isnt the end of the world..

  • tempprofile

It seemed to also fix the camera flaw (where it looked like a spec of dust or spot was always on the image at the same place).

  • Richard Darrington

Fixed the over sensitive touch when typing on my phone. Feels just overall smoother

  • Anyone else having odd battery drain on your S7 Edge?
I feel like it was better yesterday but I haven’t had the best battery life.
My “Estimated usage time remaining” never reads over 17 hours.
My Note used to last a good day before recharging. At least 20 hours.

    • nwstud

When you go into “Battery Usage” what items are using the most resources?

      • I knew I should’ve been keeping track like my last few phones.
I’ll put up the info after this current cycle.

      • Top 5:
        Spotify 28%
        Android System 17%
        Android OS 13%
        Screen 7%
        Snapchat 7%
This is with only about 4 hours screen time and 16 hours off the charger.
Spotify used to only sip battery on my Note 4 as I would only listen to music that was downloaded for the most part.

    • jonathan3579

I’m having more battery drain, yes.

    • Jonathan Huckeba

Estimated usage feature is unreliable and probably causing you to freak out.

  • Philip

My S7 would not allow me to update. I been getting error since the first day. I even Reset to Factory Condition a few times. Samsung even remote to my phone. Take it to the store?

    • Michael Ramos

I would go exchange the phone

  • jrno1

    Unlock my phone please!

  • mreveryphone

So my power button didn’t work after the update. I had to hold down the power button and volume down key to turn the device off and reset. Now my phone won’t connect to the network at all. It will only work on wifi calling and texting…CRAP!!! I removed the sim, restarted and still nothing…

    • Philip

Is it still not working? I had to return my phone for another one thru the mail. I wonder if Samsung have QC problem.

      • mreveryphone

Had to go to the T-Mobile store and they said wifi calling can’t be on while NOT connected to wifi… Turned wifi calling off and it worked fine.

        • Hal Fountain

It shouldn’t be that way. On every T-Mobile phone I’ve had including this one I have WiFi calling enabled all the time and I have no problem. It doesn’t matter if I’m connected to a WiFi network or not. Everything still works.

        • mreveryphone

I know. Somethihng changed with the update and it changed my wifi calling features to where wifi calling has to be off in order for it to connect to data… Idk why it happened that way but it did.

    • Art

Same thing happened to me smh

      • mreveryphone

Make sure wifi is not on when not connected to wifi

  • Ryan Wilkerson

Does anyone else have the issue where they are not able to paste on their s7? It is driving me crazy. I can copy but cannot paste. The option does not come up when you long press in a text field anymore. It came back briefly but it is currently not able to paste. I cannot find anything on this for the s7! This current update did not fix it.

    • Having the same problem!

      • Ryan Wilkerson

Mine randomly started working along with my keyboard emoticons a couple days ago , hang in there!

        • Had to update and restart. Works now, thank goodness!

        • Ryan Wilkerson

Happy to hear it! You never know how important that little feature is until it doesn’t work!

    • Indi Lynea

The key next to your symbol key that had the talk to text feature, press and hold that button, it will give you a key that looks like a clipboard. Click on that and viola, there’s your copied text.

  • Rafael

Could you verify why after this update it doesn’t say that is the March security patches? Or is it that THIS isn’t the March patches?

  • Jesse

This update took out my wireless!! It worked great before the update! I hope they release another one soon to repair this. Luckily I’ve got truly unlimited LTE, but I am going to need wifi sooner than later!

    • mreveryphone

Make sure wifi calling is not on when your not connected to wifi. That’s what happened to me. Once I turned wifi calling off my data came back.

      • Jesse

Thanks for the help…. It’s not on, never is :- I turned it on, then turned it off to see if that would do something–still very very delayed via wifi. If I send a Hangouts message, it takes 20 seconds to send over wifi. The Speedtest app times out on the ping test before it begins the speedtest. Ugh.

        • mreveryphone

          Interesting…

      • Jesse

        PLOT THICKENS!

I connected to my 5Ghz network and it works flawlessly! It’s just got a problem with 2.4Ghz. Interesting… I can deal for now–I have a great router at home, where i use wireless the most.

    • Jonathan Huckeba

When referring to wifi call it wifi.

  • Timothy Turner II

Phone will not turn back on after the update. Am I the only one with this issue?
