LG Speaks Up, Official G2X Update “By Summer”

Right on the heels of the LG G2X class action lawsuit, LG has finally pitched in with something to say.  Unfortunately, their response isn’t really good news.  Their statement, issued by an LG moderator at LG Forum, is that:

“The official word for the Gingerbread update on G2x is ‘by summer’ and all of the internal discussions thus far have it launching very close to that timeframe.  When we receive any updated information we will update this sticky post with it.”

Here I thought that they were supposed to announce something more around June 23rd, and that the Gingerbread update for the G2X was “less than a month out.“ I don’t know where you live, but we still have a good two months of summer left, so this might take a while.

They mean summer in South America.

  • Ianmf28

‘by summer’ implies that it should be released at the beginning or before summer to me.  At this time, they should be saying ‘by fall’ since summer is already here.

or they should just keep their damn mouths shut until they can get a firm date.

If people can’t be patient with the quibbles of android, with the late updates and glitches varied by brand of phone, then go towards apple or blackberry. If not then stop whining, because these actions of android will continue. Most people who have android since inception should no how amdroid is. The casual smart phone user shouldn’t even bother. In the case of the G2X it is understood the anger of so many phones having issues to the point t-mobile stop sale temporarily but when it comes to getting an update to the next operating system, there is no reason to get impatient. It won’t make the update.come any faster.

    • Brandon Dean

This is not an android issue. There are plenty of Android smartphones that are great to use, namely the G2 that I used to have before it was stolen. This is a quality control issue on the part of LG, rushing a phone out not properly tested for issues and then being slow to deliver at least a patch to deal with the thousands of people stuck with malfunctioning phones.

As far as I am concerned these issues shouldn’t have to wait for a version upgrade to be remedied, there should have been a patch sent out, a while ago. Some of these issues are fundamental to having a working phone. I’d say the class action lawsuit is apt, especially given that T-mobile isn’t taking them back under the warranty or insurance people pay for, thus forcing people to deal with a broken device.

There are thousands of users who will never buy a Motorola Device again because of the CLIQ, and I feel there are going to be quite a few users who never buy LG again because of the G2X.

Understood. But it seems so far more about when is gingerbread coming than how the phone works as of late. since a worjing phone is mire important, I wiuld push out a patch to fix the problems then worry abiut gingerbread later. I do aknowledge that it us easier for me to say this because I have a well working G2X.

    To LG:

The first day of summer in 2011 was June 21st.  The use of the term “by summer” implies that today’s date must be no later than June 20th.  One would suspect that if today were indeed July 21st, that summer may have already started.  The last day of summer is September 23rd.  Now, if you meant to say sometime “during summer,” that statement would be accurate so long as your definition of summer doesn’t contradict the official start and end dates of that season.  The use of “by fall” may have been more appropriate in this instance.

The G2X launched on April 15th, or 3 months, and 6 days ago.  If you are unsuccessful in delivering the G2X update “by fall,”  that would mean a total of 5 months, and 8 days will have passed since launch.  Even though that time frame is within the goal time frame for pushing out updates, it is simply too long to wait for an update that is expected to fix  major issues with this phone.  The LG G2X is a fantastic phone… when it works.  I for one feel that once the update is received, you will have a bunch of newly loyal fans.  It is not necessarily the delivery of an update that has everyone in a an uproar, it is your silence regarding when those updates will arrive.  We have already found out your definition of “in a few days,”  now all we can hope for is that “by summer” (‘s end) doesn’t mean the same thing.

    Good Day

I’ve been searching not only for a new phone, but a new carrier since my contract with Verizon expired last month. Much like buying a car, I tend to frequent user boards in order to get a little more of an inside scoop, and boy do I get that here. My kids were *this close* to closing on the new LG phone with Verizon, although we’re quite close on the HTC MT4G slide with TMO. Information like this makes our decision to avoid LG a no brainer at this point. Hello TMobile…!

    • eaT-Mobile

Sensation is $50 cheaper, in stock, and overall, a better “specs” phone.

But, if you want a keyboard, hold out for a week for the MT4G Slide…I have played with it and the phone is really really cool

Amazing.  I’ve been searching for a phone to replace my Nexus One and wound up buying the HTC Sensation and sent it back.  On paper the G2x was the go to phone.  Of course no one had G2x’s in stock (instore and online).  Now they are still delaying the Gingerbread update????
Att: LG  your G2x was a powerhouse phone and a great way to make an impact in the Android forums.  However, your business ethic and lack of clear answers for the many who supported the G2x will leave you wondering why no more of your high end smart phones will sell.  Way to go LG.

This is beyond ridiculous.  When I called T-Mobile to have the g2x replaced for reasons completely different than what the reps have on the sheet, I was repeatedly told “no.”  My phone would not reboot itself, or any of the other issues, but whenever turned off and then back on, would factory erase itself.  The rep at first said “that’s an unusual problem, we’ll get a replacement, i’ll be right back,” followed by “we’re not offering replacements for G2x phones that lose data connectivity or reboot themselves,” when he came back.

I explained that not only was that not what I said but I know a thing or two about how android phones work, and a constant factory data reset is not normal.  His advice “leave it on and don’t turn it off.”

I finally got a replacement after arguing with him about an update to fix the problems coming “soon.”  I said “Look, I know how ‘soon’ works in the mobile world.  Motorola said Cliq users would get the update to 2.1 ‘soon’ and it took almost a year,  I’ve been waiting for the free 4g update to my xoom since Motorola said ‘soon’ back in February, the G2x has been waiting on gingerbread, and I know that this update to the G2x will not come ‘soon,’ so please don’t feed me that.

T-Mobile really doesn’t want to replace these devices, despite some of them having actual problems, and not software-related problems.  Hopefully this all gets sorted out.

With the crashes, overheats, the battery life and all the other problems, it’s just unusable. This isn’t just a Gingerbread upgrade, this is a serious maintenance update and should be taken a bit more seriously by both LG and T-Mobile. Sold mine for the $ of the ETF yesterday. After many years with T-mobile, I am moving on to another carrier. I’ll avoid LG products in the future as well.

T-Mobile: Stand up for your customers. If you sold us something bad from a manufacturer, give the customers an alternative/out to keep us happy and take it out on the manufacturer. It’s your name on the product too.

    LG: Just stop already.

Tmobile should offer free sensations to all customers with problematic g2xs. How does a product like this even make it to market? Didn’t they test these things before mass producing them for the general public?

July is almost over. From my perspective, summer is part of may (the end of), June, July, & part of August (the beginning). So, “by summer” which has already started, & “in the summer time (sometime)” (Which is what is sounds like they’re really saying) is 2 totally different things & by the end of August (within a month) summer will be over. LG is full of it, I’m done w/ this G2x, it’s getting sold. Imma factory reset it, & give all the accessories (including extra ones) away along w/ the original box, warranty papers & all. Bye G2x, hello Sidekick 4G of HTC Slide 4G (my bff is getting the HTC Sensation 4G, I don’t want the same device she’s getting).

I was thrilled to see LG make a super phone… but like everyone else the experience was disappointing.  I have mine rooted running CM7 and loading nightlies.  That seems to have fixed the issues but still no gingerbread and its sad to see LG and T-Mobile handling this in such a douche way
