(Updated) T-Mobile Currently Testing G2x Maintenance Release/Gingerbread Update?

Update: We believe this is a market specific opportunity for employees in an as of yet undetermined region. We have been unable to confirm this as a nationwide opportunity for frontline employees. Please don’t post your number or IMEI in the comments, or I’ll prank call you myself. Seriously.

While the mystery of the T-Mobile G2x inventory continues, the much anticipated Gingerbread update is about to get some love through employee testing. According to this internal email T-Mobile frontline employees who are currently using a G2x smartphone might qualify to test Gingerbread and it’s maintenance release on their own personal device. While there have been some rumors about a G2x Gingerbread update coming out this week or the next, with no current date set for this trial it seems likely we are still looking at some time before the update rolls out to the public. Of course we’ll update as we know more!

Hello,

M&P and our product development team will be performing a test for the G2X MR that contains a list of updates to the phone including a Gingerbread upgrade.  We would like to invite all frontline representatives currently using or have a G2X to participate.  Anyone willing to participate will be invited to a page set up in the Community where they can input their findings and comments.  The MR would be sent over the air (FOTA) so all you would need to do is accept the update and allow it to update.

The dates of the test are still being worked out but if you are interested in participating in the test, please respond to this email and include the following information:

  1. User 10 digit phone number
  2. G2X IMEI that will be used for the test

We will provide a comprised list of participants to the business owner byThursday  6/23/2011. Anyone participants in the test will receive a follow up communication with all the information needed once the details have been worked out.

Whoops, itchy fingers.  I was saying that seems a little like a hoax.  There’s no legal jargon about risk to your device, what kind of testing, etc.  I also find it hard to believe that any firmware developement effort by a major brand would not at the MINIMUM have at least tentative test dates.  One more thing, that’s a pretty ridiculous grammatical error for a corporate communication in that last paragraph.

Thank god i went with the Sensation! I was debating whether to go with the G2x because i previosuly had a G2, but thankfully i went with this 4.3 qHD beauty that just lags a little bit. Soon HTC will fix that and my phone will be amazing! LG MESSED up on their new flagship phone that was really good. T-Mobile shouldve given the job to HTC or something to create another stock android device.

Reliable source from LG tells me within a week  they will start the Gingerbread  update for the g2x. I don’t care if you believe me or not so don’t reply. I honestly hate blog replies. Also this phone is NOT discontinued. They will start releasing with the gingerbread update which fixes the random reboots.

My experience with g2x was poor battery life until i removed a bunch of apps (who knows which was the culprit) and a master reset. Now i keep getting 16 hours of light-moderate use. awesome on a stock rom.

Just sharing in case this info makes anyone happy to hear. If you disagree you are retarded and I do not care. Go blog about your ideals.

Any ideas what apps are causing the battery drain?  I’m noticing mine drains so friggin fast now.

      • Tantan20171

mine did that once and i didn’t delete anything…. i had app killer app and drained my battery even worst so what i do is shut down and start up my phone every other day….. i really think its a stock installed app that’s the culprit (maybe qik or t-mobiles apps such as t-AppPack or Tmobile account) who knows but restarting my phone does the trick and im getting 16-18 hrs of battery life……. on a side note if anyone has reboot issues or the screen lock not turning on the screen i recommend on trying replacing another battery… since than havent had any issues with the phone.

        • zps

thanks.  i wonder if gingerbread will help?  i may try to find a clean rom to ditch the tmo crapware.

It is system apps that are effecting both WIFI and battery. I have killed all T-Mobile Bloat on my G2X and have no issues anymore. The apps I froze are WIFI calling, Car Home, TeleNav, Tmobile My account and highlites. These are the big ones that are very bad on battery due to most want to run all the time even if you never used them. I get 14 to 15 hours out of my phone with moderate use. And my phone actually stays connected to WIFI protected networeks now.

I don’t need to “restart” my phone, it does this by itself at least twice a day…

      • Dave420wank

Thanks for all replies . I started having the reboot problem after I started using the wiring hotspots option on the phone. Which they try charging for and it works anyway without paying. I have to say the battery life is great. For those having poor battery life there is something you installed on your phone that is causing problems. I listen to the music player on full volume for 8 hours every night and use it for a hotspots for my ipad2 for 25 min on break and when I leave work I still have 65 to 75 percent left. This is consistently. Most problems come from people trying to do advanced things on their phone trust me I know. Best phone I have had so quit your crying people if you Don like it get a different phone or quit trying to tweak it

I do not believe you, lol. I am not retarded maybe my g2x is. It flatlined yesterday. Maybe tmobile/LG is if they think I’m gonna take another g2x before they update it. If they don’t update it by the 6th of july I will switch to verizon b4 they eliminate unlimited data. Or maybe even sprint. I used to love tmobile.

Wificalling app is constantly using battery. You can check realtime with SystemPanel app.

      • Alvin Brinson

Wifi Calling is a dog on any TMO phone when it comes to battery. It is a poorly designed app in that it uses battery *even when not turned on*… the only solution is too root/delete it completely.

U don’t work for TMobile. You work for LG. The phone is awesome until it reboots or kills the battery after a couple of hour in stand by which makes it not so awesome…. Big fail for LG

    • Victor19

There are clear software issues with this phone……the hardware is great (aside from the noted percentage with screen bleed). I rooted and am running a GB 2.3.4 rom with tons of apps and the battery life is great. If you have a G2x that doesn’t have screen bleed then waiting for the GB update just might do the trick. T-mobile just needs to roll the thing out sooner as opposed to later because otherwise they’ll never get rid of their G2x stock.

I don’t care about you either. Go blog your ideas as well. It’s now been one week since you posted your “superior” knowledge post and still no G2X update. However, I’m not having any issues at all, so its not that big of a deal, however, when you’re as smug as you are, it chaps my arse. Why don’t you just not post at all since you don’t care if anyone responds or not?

I went into a T Mobile store here in NYC to check out the Sensation and compare it to my G2X.The store had the G2X up for sell and on display. This guy was in their trying to decide on which one to buy (G2X or Sensation). The sales rep who was helping us both said the G2X would be getting a OTA Gingerbread update in 2 weeks. The sales rep also owned a G2X and said he couldn’t wait for gingerbread.

so when did gingerbread come out ? its so sad to see phone that are just now getting it.

  • Collazosan

i havent had any random reboots and freezing from my G2X, some people out there put stupid apps or do crazy things with their phones maybe thats why they get those random reboots. I cannot wait for the 2.3 update love the gingerbread keyboard and UI. The sensation is alright not at nice looking or as fast as the G2X. Also the sensation only comes with 1 G of internal memory wtf? I think the G2X has a chance if gingerbread were to hurry up and get here then everyone would see how awesome it truly is.

      I
purchased the G2X when it came out. Worked amazing. Yeah I installed a few
apps, from the market. I began having freezing issues about 2 weeks in. Then it
started rebooting by itself. Next, the volume rocker would get
“stuck” (didn’t seem like the actual button was stuck but more like
the phone was stuck on vol up some days, vol down on other days). So I figured
I got a bad phone. Called tmo and they told me to send it in and to call once I
had a tracking # to call back, so I did. Thank goodness I held on to my N1 so I
wasn’t w/o a phone. They had me order a new phone (had to pay again, then wait
for a refund for the one I sent back – they were unable to refund until the
phone arrived plus an extra week or so before it got processed) So yay I got a
replacement right? Sure I did. Did not install any apps, now this one gets
stuck in random reboots and reboot loops. Does it happen daily? No, about every
4th day or so. But the only way to get it out of reboot loop is to completely
      restore it.

      When the
phone works it’s amazing. Cooling off period came and went. I really want to
keep the phone but I want it to not have issues like this (reboot loop) at
least. I know they are working hard to fix the issues and I truly hope this is
      software related.

      My
current options are: keep the one I have and restore it, or call tmo and
request a replacement (refurbished phone which will be a phone someone else
turned in that had issues but issues were “fixed”)

    • HTClover1911

I got mine out of the box, charged it, didn’t use it while doing so, and when I started using it It started to reboot. I did a full reset, on a stock device I mite add, and that did not help. I returned it and got a Sensation, it may be a bit slower, but a week later, I am much more satisfied.

This statement is a complete lie, from start to finish.

        • TMOTECH

I am a T-Mobile employee and I will tell you sir that 3 of my friends had serious issues with their G2X. Random reboots, bleeding screens,  and all the rest. One of my friends went through 3 of them before they got one that worked properly. So don’t  go around saying that people are fabricating stories or assuming that people are doing things to their phones that are harming them. Sometimes these things happen and it only hurts credibility to deny that they do. So quit it  you douche.

        • Zifnab2k

Not a lie in any shape or form. Same thing happened to me on 2 different units. Ended up returning 4 and opening 17 boxes with the T-Mobile manager because of the screen bleed, which the manager agreed was BS and sent all 21 of them back. Methinks you’re just a troll.

I’VE  had  my g2x for 2 months now. never has it rebooted or locked or anything really. works great got a bunch 0f games apps pdf files no prblm. oh and the screen is just fine no leaks.

    • Zifnab2k

You’re wrong about the installation of “stupid apps”. The first g2x started rebooting while it was still syncing my contacts for the first time, with no additional apps installed. You can’t blame an issue that begins on day one on app installation. The issue arose because they slapped “vanilla” android on the phone and shipped it without QA’ing. Just like they let the south koreans slap that shoddy ass display on it, and tried to tell me “Spot lights in the corner isn’t a defect, it’s a feature”. lol, get over it. We all want to defend our cell phone purchase, but that doesn’t make the g2x perfect.

As for the “only 1g of memory” on the sensation, I just picked one up and installed literally every app I ever would consider installing, and still have over 500 mb free storage. WTF are you installing that requires more than a gig?

      • scanpennett

I purchased 2 G2Xs, one for me and one for my husband, a week after it was released.  Prior to installing apps both phones had reception issues (2 bars vs. the previous 5 in downtown Chicago).  Then our phones started dropping calls; locking up; etc. T-Mobile  took us “off the network” and put us “back on the network”. I lost all my icons, had to reinstall my apps, and my phone wouldn’t ring anymore, etc (husbands stopped ringing a week before).  Finally they told us to go back to the story to exchange the phones (after 7 weeks or so).  Went into the store but since they have suspended the sale of these phones we were unable to get a replacement.  Thank God I’m a loyalty customer because they refunded all my money + credit for the time our phones didn’t ring.  They admitted the software was “defective” and it shouldn’t have been released without more testing.  Our Sensations will be here tomorrow (at full discount) and I hope I don’t have the same issues.  I would love to hold out for a fix but, we need our phones.  I love the dual flash feature on the sensation but, will miss the onboard memory of the G2X.  I use to be with Voice Steam – which became T-Mobile in 2002 (?).  Therefore I’m considered a loyalty customer.  I’m not sure if they would do this exchange for all customers.

        • Danishswag

Welcome to LG’s build quality. Solid designs, but hit or miss quality control. The first batch of phones they sent out was mostly bad to tell the truth.

For me rebooting had to do wirh the manufacturing date of the phone. Me, my brother, sister in law and a friend bought his phone. For all which were manufacturers before Apr 18 2011 were faulty and rebootinn like crazy. Exchanged three of them for dates Apr 27 or after and no problem at all since then.

        • CactusCat

Same here. G2x of mine is 4/27 manufacturing date. No issues to speak of. Minimal bleeding at top of screen but not even noticeable unless you’re specifically looking for it.

Its awesome now! I think a lot of ppl are rooting their phones and messing them up or just too many apps or nonmarket apps. Either way stop whining! Use the phone properly.

    • Danishswag

Even the unofficial leaked gingerbread update came close to doubling my battery life, with no other changes. That’s with a battery calibration on both the update and stock to make sure the battery stats file was calibrated properly. Also, LG made an error in the code that tells android that engineering mode is always on. That uses a lot of extra battery and system resources, and creates problems with the connection.

So yes, it’s a major update. It also means i can finally install an AOSP rom because the update will hopefully have nvidia’s fix for the bluetooth drivers.

True it may make your phone look a lil different but it can hardly be called cosmetic. This is definitely a MAJOR UPDATE.

I had the rebooting problem for over a  month. I’ve done the reset factory phone and since then i had only 1 reboot  ( 2 weeks ago ) . Be careful with the applications you installed in your phone. Those are the ones that screw the software.  This is a quick fix while we are waiting for Gingerbread.

  • Slamball271

will this update fix the wifi problems that everyone seems to have?

I am a tmo rep and also own a G2X.  I will tell you that I barely have any probs with mine, and I really do love my phone.  The screen definitely hasn’t been bleeding and it has only randomly rebooted on me twice in the 2 months I have owned it, and to be honest I could’ve been holding down or pressing on the power button which will definitely cause it to reboot.  Anyone that owns an android phone can’t say that their phone has never frozen, that would be unreal, but they definitely shouldn’t be freezing each time you pick it up.  My phone is great and I love it, can’t wait for the GB update!

I have had my G2X for seven weeks.  The only problem I had was week-2 when I downloaded from Android Market an application… tried uninstalling it and it kept coming back. Did a hardware reset and created a new Google account.  Have zero problems since – although the Micro-USB plug is coming loose, I suspect from the nightly battery charge as I cannot go two days without a charge (and I have Bluetooth OFF, Wi-Fi ON, and screen time-out at 30-seconds).

Overall, the G2X is wonderful (IMO).  Battery life could be better.  My G2X is a lot better than the Galaxy S 4G my wife has… she wants to swap her Galaxy for a G2X.  (And I am NOT an LG or Tmo employee or representative.)

I, too, am still excited about the G2X and I am waiting for the GB update.

THEY TEST THE UNITS, THEY KNOW THERE ARE ISSUES BUT THEY STILL SOLD IT KNOWOINGLY,,GO TO SCHOOL WHAT COMPANY GETS TO COME OUT WITH PRODUCTS THAT ARE SUB PAR, THEN ADD ON CELLULAR OVERLAYS SO YOU CAN NOT EVEN GET WHAT YOUR PHONE IS MEANT TO HANDLE

    • Dbcombo1

Companies are always selling buggy products.  There was a reason that updates were invented so bugs can be fixed.  If they were to test the units completly before release it would be so outdated it would be worthless.

    • Eric

They must have tested on my G2x because I’ve had it for 3 months with no problems…

I really love my G2x and I think it sucks that some are having issues. It sucks for them for obvious reasons. For me it delays software updates.

      Take care,
      -Eric

    gingerbread?  ever?

just called tech support. yesterday NO internet or phone service for over 9 hours. just spoke to 3 people over an hour.  received conflicting info from each one but was told

    about my tmobile web stick:
-”expect web browsing problems with internet service at 2 G speeds”  -i called cause I was receiving NO service.  There is a big difference between “problems” and “not working”.

    about my g2x phone
-”your phone is working now.  there’s nothing we can do.”  -but this is a reoccurring problem.  my phone will often show a signal but have no service.

I frequently have this problem as well. I will have 4g coverage and then no emails, texts or phone calls will work. Then it will come back for about 5 minutes and leave again. Especially irritating when using the phone as a tether.

Really.  If you have to reboot ur PC to clear the cache on the processor, you obviously have no idea WTF u talkin bout son.  Your computer and your phone are screwed and you think it’s normal and rebooting is normal practice.  In reality, my phone sucks and I’m a power user with a college degree in IT, working in an IT help desk.  My computer doesn’t suck.  I reboot it once a month when Microsoft has it’s patch tuesday and forces you to reboot.  Other than that, nothing wrong whatsoever.  And I constantly leave like 20 programs in the system tray and 9-10 browser windows open on my 3 year old PC

I had no luck with mine, it says it is updated to the latest version but it did not do anything.  Still a paper weight.
