Nokia Nuron Shows Itself (Again)

2010-02-08 17.07.26

While it’s only been a few days since we first got wind of the Nokia “Nuron”, aka Nokia 5230, the name hasn’t gotten any better. Dropping March 17th as we first predicted, the Nuron will come in with some 3G goodness, a 3.2” touchscreen and the Ovi Application Store. Interestingly enough this phone is being billed to both “Connected Socializers ages 20-40. “ Ok. Sure. While it’s certainly not going to have the appeal of say the HD2 or the Nexus One, the combination of a touchscreen and the Ovi apps store might produce a winner.  Look for it March 17th.

As a Nokia owner. I have had the Nokia 6680, N95, 5800 and now the N97. I have T-Mobile and I’ve been wanting a Nokia Symbian (Not a Maemo fan) smartphone with T-Mobile’s 3g capabilities for many years now. AT&T is overpriced and worthless to me and T-Mobile has better coverage in Chicago. Also, owning my own T-Mobile exclusive dealer, T-mobile should release more Nokia smartphones and show what Nokia is made of. The Nokia 6600 (T-Mobile’s hottest smartphone a few years ago) proved that Nokia is worth alot. I would’ve got the phone if it had a keyboard and a front camera (for Video Calling) but most importantly I need WiFi. I’ll get back to you guys when we get it in and I test it out myself.

  • Just cant wait cuz my b-day is on the 11th of march and imma get this phone while im out on spring break or a nexus one? I need help???

  • AndroidMaster

Seems like it won’t need a data plan which is great.

Good news, only web2go data is required.

My wife has a 5530 (basically the same thing but with wifi instead of 3g), and its a pretty nice little phone. Very compact, and the onscreen keyboard is surprisingly easy to use.

    Music player isnt bad either.

    • coolmen777

      Thanks for your input.
Can you elaborate on few things for me. I assume she has an unlocked version and not branded by T-Mobile. How good is the screen? Is battery life any good? E-mail client supports POP/IMAP? I read somewhere that speakerphone was bad in 5530 & 5800.
Any cool OVI aplications that are actually useful for everyday use?

  • coolmen777

    Hey guys,
Pretty excited about this phone. Had Wing which was sold a year ago, currently temp using Sony Ericsson TM506 for tethering off TZones ($5.99 for 3G speeds). Don’t really care about lack of WiFi (netbook has that) Thinking about using this as a replacement for my SE.
How easy is it when it comes to tethering (not familiar with Symbian OS)? Does it have proxy settings on it like in Win Mobile? Don’t want to have to deal with loosing my data plan. Also, can’t this be re-flashed with generic Nokia firmware if T-Mobile brands this with custom firmware? Is Google Maps an option with Nokia or am I stuck with OVI Maps (how does it compare?) MyFaves capable?
Sorry about all questions, just weighing my options. Any advice? Thanks.

  • Murble

    @ coolmen777

Compared to my N82, the speakerphone in the 5530 is a bit quieter. But then, the phone is also a lot thinner and the speakers are smaller. As far as battery life goes, she uses it for basic phone calls/texting/occasional showing off photos and light web browsing. This gets her about 2 days between charges. Heavy use will have you charging it once a day.

The screen on the 5530 is nice and bright for being a low end phone. Works well for web browsing, or watching stupid videos of cats jumping into boxes.

The email client does support both pop and imap. Google produces native symbian versions of maps and youtube, so you have a choice of mapping software. Ovi maps does allow you to preload maps onto an SD card, and now has turn by turn voice navigation.

Keep in mind that even though it is a smart phone, it is an entry level model. As long as you dont compare it to the droid, iphone, nexus one, etc. you will probably be very happy.

I am thrilled to see T-Mobile launch Nokia Nuron; finally I will get Edge class 32!! That sounds wierd to most city dwellers, but out here in the country we don’t have Wi-fi available at all, much less 3g. :( The only phones that don’t drop calls are my Motorola ZN5, the 490, and a cheap LG200 Net10 phone. To finally get a touch screen phone with GOOD reception, GPS, faster Edge speeds, and can slip into a pocket is a winner for all four of us! We are definitely upgrading as soon as these come out. My teenagers are going to be estatic.

  • Jonstonson

Good mid-range phone. Love to see the Nokia Love headed towards T-Mobile USA. Send us some more European Nokia phones!

  • runner

kinda glad that tmobile is releasing a mid level device for nokia. seems like we dont get alot of phones like that. im a big fan of nokia. currently using a e71 and i also have a back up phone which happens to be a nokia. i was looking for a decent media phone for nokia. and it seems like i found one for a good prize. looks like im picking this up when it releases

  • DavidOhio

I love nokia phones because of call quality and overall design but isn’t NURON spelled NEURON???

    • David

      Nope, its Nuron alright

  • Kayla

How much does one think the phone is going to cost and if they think data will be a must?

  • BGK

I just sold my 5800. As I was packing it up to ship it I was really sad to see it go. I use my N79 (Just EDGE on T-Mo) and like that but wish for some high speed data. I wonder if they’ll require the smartphone data package for this. They probably will, but one could hope. It’s really a great device. the only difference between this Nuron and the 5800 series seems to be the camera and a few other minor things. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the phone to anyone that doesn’t have their heart set on something with a capacitive screen.

If this comes wtih 850/1700/1900 bands it will be the first smartphone with multiple carrier High Speed data. But I doubt it will come so equipped.

  • Sarah

Hey! I work for a Tmobile store. Our Nokia rep came in to day to give us a little demo of the nuron with his prototype that he just received. Pretty nifty little device and in the mid price range it will definitely give some competition to the Tap and the Samsung Highlight.

Phone comes preloaded with a 4gb MicroSD card, however only 2gb of that card is actually usable space as the Ovi navigation system uses the other 2gb of that memory space.

Has a one touch button for all of your entertainment needs in the upper right hand corner, which is pretty handy actually!

Also gave the rep a little trouble about the awful name. And I quote, “so is it too late to change the name?! Nuron, seriously?! what’s that even mean?” ….he didn’t have an answer!

Any other questions I’d be happy to answer to the best of my knowledge!

    • coolmen777

Can you tell us any details in terms of pricing (upgrade) and possibly if data plan is required? I would love to be able to use this with my T-Zones plan. Did it have a MyFaves app on it? How good was the screen and general build quality? Thanks.

    • Kayla

Do you know if the navigation will require a data package?

      • coolmen777

If the maps are stored on the card, it shouldn’t, but T-Mobile as well as other carriers like to cripple the phones. I’m pretty sure it could be easily debranded which will allow all functionality that similar unlocked Nokia’s have (5530 & ‘5800).

      • intheknow

No data plan required for navigation. And you can use it offline, and in other countries -walking and driving…entirely free!

  • Sarah

Hey! Should be 69.99 after rebates with a 2 yr agreement. I go back and forth on the required data feature because the rep mentioned that maps will be accessible without being online and Streamline tells us that it is a “recommended” feature, however you really never know what will change between now and March with T-Mobile. Seemed to be built pretty well. Rep was really pushing the resistive touchscreen as a plus to the phone (which is generally not my favorite) but it wasn’t bad for being restrictive. It will come with a “guitar pick-like” (as they described it) small stylus in the box. Not sure on the myfaves soc compatible… will get back to you!

  • NokiaMan

Phone will not require data but $10 web2go is data feature. Pricing is not announced yet but expect to be pleasantly surprised. The maps feature will be loaded onto the memory card so it will work with or without data. If you so chose, you can remove the maps app and have a full 4 gb memory card or keep maps loaded and you still have 2 to spare.

    • Kayla

Would one need data to access the ovi store?

      • NokiaMan

yes, the phone does not have wifi so that is a data requirement…but $10 a month includes unlimited 3G/Edge access including exchange and push email support so you can definitely afford it! Plus T-Mobile gives web2go away free for the first 30 days right now, so hopefully when the product launches you can get it to try out and decide if it’s worth keeping.
