These Are the Businesses Using T-Mobile 5G in the Most Creative Ways This Year

T-Mobile for Business has handed out its Innovate Awards for 2026, and as usual, the winners show off some genuinely clever ways companies and public agencies are putting T-Mobile’s network to work.

T-Mobile announced the winners at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando, marking the fifth year of the awards program. In the Community category, first place went to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which worked with the Virginia Department of Transportation and Crosstek on a roadside wildlife warning system.

It uses thermal cameras and edge AI to spot animals near the road and warn drivers in real time, with T-Mobile 5G keeping it connected along a rural Appalachian highway. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Brookhaven Police Department tied for second, and the Prescott Regional Communications Center took third.

In Employee Enablement, First Student took the top spot with its HALO connected transportation platform, which uses T-Mobile connectivity along with Samsara dash cams to support school bus operations. Other categories, including Customer Experience, also recognized companies using T-Mobile’s network to improve how they serve their own customers.

If the Innovate Awards sound familiar, that’s because T-Mobile has been running this program for a while, first under the name Unconventional Awards. Last year, T-Mobile gave first-place winners in each category $25,000 donations to the charities of their choice, as we covered when T-Mobile handed out $25,000 awards to companies using 5G in creative ways.

Programs like this are part marketing and part showcase, but the winners are a good reminder that T-Mobile’s network matters well beyond our phones. When the same 5G that streams your video is also warning drivers about deer on a dark highway, it’s hard not to be a little impressed.
