T-Mobile Galaxy S8 and S8+ getting Android Pie update, Galaxy S8 Active also being updated

Following last month’s Android Pie update for the Galaxy S9 and S9+, it’s now time for Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners to sink their teeth into Pie.

T-Mobile is now updating its Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ to Android 9 Pie. Galaxy S8 owners should be on the lookout for a 1659.60MB update to version G950USQU5DSC1, while Galaxy S8+ owners are receiving a 1604.53MB update to version G955USQU5DSC1.

This update includes Android Pie and Samsung’s new One UI. Included in One UI are new features like a night mode and tweaks to move interactive elements closer to the bottom of the screen so that they’re easier to reach, which should make one-handed use easier. The update also includes the March 1, 2019 Android security patches.

T-Mobile is now pushing the Galaxy S8 and S8+ Pie updates over the air, and TmoNews readers Joanna and Pyu have already gotten their updates. If you’ve got an S8 or S8+ and haven’t yet gotten a piece of Pie, you can check for your update by going into Settings > Software update > Download updates manually.

Also getting an update today is the T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active. Unfortunately, the update isn’t Android Pie, but it does include the March 1, 2019 Android security patches. The 134.60MB update bumps the Galaxy S8 Active to version G892USQS4BSC3 and is now rolling out, as TmoNews reader Sam already got the update. You can check for it by selecting Settings > Software Update > Download updates manually on your phone.

Once you’ve updated your Galaxy S8, S8+, or S8 Active, be sure to share your first impressions of the update with us!

Thanks, Joanna, Pyu, and Sam!

  • erikdrakon

    And the active still waiting….:(

    • Jared Hylton

And will be for a bit. It got WAY more updates before the S8/S8+ ever has, and I suspect shortly after the S8/S8+ get their update rolled out, yours is next. Keep calm.

    C’mooooon V30! Yeah, we’re still out here!

  • Jay

Where’s the note 8??? At&t are rolling out

    • Anthony Robertson Junior

My sentiments exactly Wtf?! Note 8 is newer and we pay more for it but we can’t get our updates first SMH

      • Ruben Garcia

And sprint note 8 got updated also to pie

        • Jared Hylton

          Switch to Sprint then.

        • ruben

Oh I do have sprint former tmo customer. Thought sprint would be the last to get it

      • Jared Hylton

Price has nothing to do with the decision. Just because you GROSSLY overpaid for a phone doesn’t mean you’ll get your updates first. LoL…

        • Anthony Robertson Junior

Price does have a lot to do with it. Why do you think Apple and Google can charge so much without features. And dont assume I overpaid for something when my values are just higher than yours Lol

        • Jared Hylton

The Note8, aka, the repackaged FAILURE of a Galaxy Note7 because of fire hazards lmao!! That phone was cheap then, and it’s cheap now. I bought my S8+ when it went on Fire Sale at BB, and got 0% interest for 18 months. Could still resale mine to someone on AT&T or T-Mobile for about what I ACTUALLY paid for it, which was definitely not MSRP. LoL

        • Anthony Robertson Junior

Sounds like you are ACTUALLY referring to the Note FE and cheap is not only a relative term but an opinion, which you are entitled to but by you using that word to describe my phone you’re ACTUALLY contradicting yourself seeing as cheap means low in price and worth more than it costs in which I would say I agree with the latter (or at least on par). So maybe my values aren’t much higher after all Lol But Yea Good for you

Absolutely horrible update. I can’t stand it. So many things you can’t find. Changes were made that I can change back. Absolutely horrible.

    • Cindy Harper-Rasmussen

      I totally agree!

    • Jared Hylton

Samsung Community app — download it, and also, a quick Google search will literally give you a walkthrough of where new features were placed, and so on and so forth. Not to mention, Samsung has literature on their website that will assist you with finding features if you get lost. There is ALSO a Spotlight search function on most phones these days, so you should be able to find everything eventually. They did some rearranging to make it more one-handed friendly. The old UI was SO ugly. TouchWiz was even worse.

I got a surprise when I did the update shortly before going out for a run. Thought it wouldn’t change anything visible, but I didn’t read the description. Many icons are different. I do like the look so far.

  • Cindy Harper-Rasmussen

This update sucks. If this is what Samsung is moving to, I’ll switch to Google Pixle 3. I hate this update. I want MY phone back!

    • Jared Hylton

Better get to switching then, Cindy. Sadly, Samsung will not be rolling back from One UI. It’s here to stay. If you want to sell your phone, OfferUp, 5 Mile, there are several apps out there that will allow you to get rid of that S8+ for a phone that has better bands/coverage (The Galaxy S9, or S10, either one) or the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR all have band 66/71 support, and THAT is more important to me than graphical user interfaces. If you want easy, go to an iPhone. If you want customization, Android is your friend.

Anyone know how to “schedule a text” with the S8 now? GRRR….

    • When you’re in a message thread, just go to the little + symbol at the bottom left. It’ll give you a lot of neat options like quick reply, schedule message, attach image, attach video, etc.

  • GabbyLami

With this new update I lost my Always ON and Screen lock screen. I went into settings, shut it off and on again, still cannot lock my phone. I see that there are a bunch of cool camera/ video features, however, I would like to lock my screen. I don’t think it should be such a process to figure out how to do so.

    No note 8 update in sight… sigh… :-(

  • Jared Hylton

Galaxy S8+ here, and still not receiving the update trigger. I’ve attempted to manually check, I’ve checked to see if a side-load was available, nothing. Anyone actually received the update in the DFW area in North Texas? Is it just not hitting our market yet? I WANT MY UPDATE, gddmmit!

    • Oscar Ayala

I’m in Dallas just got it

      • Jared Hylton

        Awesome! Thank you Oscar!!

  • Ore Joseph Lindenfeld

6 days out, still no pie update to note 8. Dead last… FU tmobile

  • Oscar Ayala

Im on metro and got the update today

  • Danny3xd

Got it yesterday. So far, so good. Looks a little cleaner. Only bummer is having to open to check time. Am gonna look to have “always on”, always on. But Love, love that the close all is no longer so easy to miss and open an app when trying to close all. Have not noticed battery lasting longer as my phone is almost always on charger. But that alone would be a great and worth getting used to new an’ scary.

Looks good and slightly cleaner. All in all, thanks for the update to they that give tech updates.
