As expected, T-Mobile has begun updating its Galaxy Note 8 to Android Oreo. But that’s not the only Samsung device that T-Mo is currently updating.

Several T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 owners began receiving their Android Oreo update overnight. The update is version N950USQU3CRC2 and is 1330.84MB in size.

Included in this update are Oreo features like picture-in-picture, autofill, and notification dots and Samsung-specific improvements, too. The update also brings the March 1, 2018 Android security patches.

T-Mobile is now updating its Galaxy S8 Active to Android Oreo as well. TmoNews readers Phil and Brent received their 1301.8MB update overnight to version G892USQU1BRC4.

Just like the Note 8 update, this update for the Galaxy S8 Active brings Oreo features lkike picture-in-picture, autofill, notification dots, and Samsung improvements like new clock styles for the lock screen and Always On Display and more high-contrast keyboards for the Samsung Keyboard.

The Galaxy S8 Active update includes the March 1, 2018 Ancroid security patches as well.

If you’ve got a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8 Active and you haven’t yet updated to Oreo, you can either wait for the OTA update to hit your phone over the coming days or check for it manually by going into Settings > Software update > Download updates manually.

Thanks, Phil and Brent!

Any word on when U.S. unlocked Note 8 is getting the update???

    • DrScope

Install the Samsung smart switch app on your PC and connect the note 8 and it will let you update it. That’s what my friend did anyway

      • WT

It doesn’t show any update available on a PC smart switch…

        • Chase Culpepper

Yeah, my Note 8 says it’s up to date still. I want the upgrade!

        • Adam Fine

Don’t do it! You’ll lose all of your badge notifications. It’s f’ing ridiculous!

  • Adam Thodey

What I find interesting is that the software update page on T-mobile still lists Oreo as “Phase: Manufacturer Development: Version 8.0 Oreo” and in “Development” on their software update pgae “https://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones-tablets-devices/software-updates” so i’m not sure how it can be released if it is still in development…

    • Todd N.

I would suggest checking again as it now shows “Phase: Complete: Version 8.0 Oreo”

    • SirStephenH

Yeah and T-Mobile keeps pointing to these pages to track the update process whenever people ask for an ETA on updates which is simply frustrating everyone more because they tell you nothing and are wholly inaccurate.

  • Stephen C

After the update, I feel my Note 8 is flying now.

    • JJCommonSense

Downloading as we speak! I hope to have the same positive result. Do you know what they mean by “picture in picture?” I thought most samsungs already had the ability to float the video on the screen.

      • EffortLess

It’s automatic now for some apps. For example, start Google Maps or YouTube and hit the home button. They’ll appear in a smaller window and continue running. It was a thing Google added in Android… a derivative of what Samsung had from before.

        • Petey07

I think my Note 8 having issues regarding “Picture in Picture”. when on the YT app, I tried to hit the home button, and it just closes the app. I tried holding on to the home button, and it doesn’t do anything. I wonder if it is an setting issues, or the YT app need to update.

        • EffortLess

          Mighy need YouTube Red subscription.

        • Petey07

Ahh, its a feature for the YT Red Subscription. But If that’s the case, I might see if it works on Maps if the feature is on my phone lol.

        • Stan Cook

It’s not charging my phone properly

        • Petey07

Doesn’t work for Map either, it closes the app… Maybe i’m not doing something right if the feature is enable on Oreo.

        • EffortLess

Make sure you started navigating before hitting home.

        • Petey07

          Yes, it works now. Thanks!

But for YT, i think like what you said, it probably only featured on the YT red. Sucks, but its ok since u can do the multi-window and multi task.

        • superg05

settings can override in dev maybe

        • JJCommonSense

Have u tried dragging the window from the upper right corner towards the center of the screen?

      • SirStephenH

It’s a standardized, more rounded out experience because it is now part of Android instead Samsung’s hacky method.

    • superg05

      its really fast

    • jaycapo1

@Stephen C Where are you located? I’m in Fort Lauderdale, FL haven’t been able to get my Note 8 to grab the update.

      • Stephen C

        Indianapolis.

  • noh1bvisas

DO NOT INSTALL OREO. It has a bug where you will get a constant notification to link the homescreen to your samsung account. It cannot be turned off, no matter what. I had to delete my samsung account, to get rid of it – which also disables samsung pay. Their loss.

    • Todd N.

Did you do a factory reset? It is always a good idea to to a factory reset after a major update like Oreo

      • noh1bvisas

Why would I want to do a factory reset? That’s a lot of work. I just deleted my Samsung account and the message went away. Sammy will no longer be making any money from Samsung Pay from me.

      • Erik

No need to factory reset. Just wipe the cache partition

    • Stephen C

I didn’t encounter any issue since I updated to Oreo this early morning. May be a reset?

    • Iphart

It popped up on mine a few times the first day, I just x it out.
It has not come back since Sunday.

  • Dalo 718

why is my screen just black after updating my note 8?

  • Adam Fine

How can I go back to nougat? F’ing stupid oreo removed all my notification bubbles. Like my email. The icon showed I had emails. Now they don’t. And read articles that said it’s been removed unless I use another launcher. Absolute bullshyte.

  • Philip

I finally got the Oreo update for my unlock S8 from Samsung. The download took forever, even with my fast home internet.

  • Philip

I got my Oreo update on my S8 today. I see that my email running count for unread mails is not working. How about yours?

  • UhhHuhh

oh why did i jump to upgrade without reading the negative..Need to find a way go back to Nougat! Battery seems to drain faster and can not set individual ringtone for contact notifications

  • Jose Candice

i have not been able to get my phone to run the update.

  • jaycapo1

I haven’t been able to get my phone to manually grab the update either. – Note 8

    • ggfb20

I just grabbed the OREO firmware and flashed via ODIN. I had to exchange my Note 8 after I was hit with th battery drain bug. I couldn’t even backup my device via smart switch cause the usb c was dead for everything. I had the Oreo update only minutes after T-mobile released it.

Now with the replaced Note 8 I was on like day 4 before giving in a flashing via ODIN. The firmware took forever to download (like 5 hours) due to a restricted server. But I know Oreo gave my Note 8 new life, it was flying and feeling like a brand new device.

    NOTE8

  • rithasastar

Am I the only Note 8 user without the update?
I wake up every morning expecting my phone to ask me if I want to update now or later. But I get nothing. I manually check for updates at least 6 times a day. But I get nothing. Is it just my Note?

  • Chase Culpepper

I’ve done that but I have no update either. I manually check and I have tried smart switch.

  • Limeybastard

    Oreo, garbage inho.

  • jaycapo1

tried this as well, hasn’t worked for me.

  • Bmore

I had to do a warranty exchange for my T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 and my new device still doesn’t have the Oreo update available:( And apparently there are a ton of Note 8 owners that don’t have it yet either via the T-Mobile forums. Please update with this issues @tmonews.

  • Chase Culpepper

So….is this just the slowest rollout of updates ever? It’s 4/20 and still no oreo. wtf

  • Bob Shaw

Ditto. Checking every day. No Oreo update. Both OTA and via SmartSwitch … no joy
