Android 7.0 Nougat update making its way to all T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and S7 edge users

Well, that didn’t take long.

T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners that participated in Samsung’s Nougat beta program began getting their official Android 7.0 update last night. The update mentioned that beta testers would be getting the update first, but now it looks like the update is hitting non-beta testers, too.

Several T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and S7 edge owners are now receiving updates that weigh in at 1.5GB. These folks report that they weren’t in the beta program, and the fact that their updates are 1.5GB rather than 116MB like last night’s updates support that.

T-Mobile has also refreshed its Galaxy S7 and S7 edge support pages, confirming that the updates are ready to go.

As a reminder, these are significant updates for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Not only do they bump the phones up to Android 7.0 Nougat, but they also include an updated UX, improvements to multi-window, notifications, and quick settings, the February 1, 2017 security patches, and more.

If you’ve got a T-Mobile Galaxy S7 or S7 edge and haven’t yet updated to Android 7.0, go into Settings > About device > Download updates manually and check to see if there’s a Nougat treat waiting for you.

Thanks, Jesse and David!

Seeing it here, it was waiting for me when I did a manual download update check. Fingers crossed…. 1.5GB (1563.03MB) update.

  • Robert

Coming from the iOS world, how would I restore completely from my computer, which assumedly would be better than an OTA update?

    • SirStephenH

You can do that via Kies but you shouldn’t have to do a full flash unless you’ve screwed up your phone somehow. But if you want to do a factory reset anyways then I’d say go for it.

    • Christopher_McG

Kies is depreciated. Use Samsung Smart Switch, and SideSync if you want to get your phone stuff on your computer.

  • bkat11

Got it this morning…works great vs the beta versions!

  • Blake Snedeker

I hate the new messenger flow. The next button on the top is not ergonomic.

  • Ian Campbell

well holy f(&*& crap the update is on my phone. I was not a beta tester but stumbled on this page and i’m downloading it as i type this.

  • SirStephenH

Cool but still waiting impatiently for 7.1 on my V20.

  • Joe

    Just upgraded mine.

Something small but got me mad. Tmobile turned on “use wifi calling” by default after the update. I hate when they try and force people to do what they want. I don’t want wifi calling.

    • ThatsMrtoyou

Tap on it and it’s shut off

      • Joe

It shouldn’t auto set in the first place. People who don’t know about it will suddenly be using it.

        • Christopher_McG

and it doesn’t matter because VoLTE is on by default and calls will automatically switch to and from VoWiFi and VoLTE… unbunch your panties.

        • Joe

See that last line really wasn’t needed was it? I’m not making you look stupid so stop making me look bad.

        • MattPortland

Typical online these days. It’s lame.

  • Reagan1

Should I or shouldn’t I…that is the question? I have downloaded the update, but not installed. Always afraid to be the guinea pig on this stuff.

    • Stigasawuswrecks

It’s been as smooth as butter for me and I have Smart Launcher overlaying TouchWiz. Its been great for me.

      • Reagan1

Yeah, decided to go ahead and install and no problems so far. I honestly don’t notice a ton of major differences anyway, so happy overall. Like that they added a tethering toggle in quick settings.

        • Stigasawuswrecks

Its not a drastic change but I like a lot of the new features. The memory and app consumption management is great and I like the notification drop down feature.

I upgraded last night. So far, it seems just a tad slower when doing some things compared to before. Can’t say it’s laggy, but it doesn’t seem as snappy.

    • netplayground

Agreed. Everything seems to take…..just … a little … longer to …. happen.
One thing seems faster. Battery drain.

      • JJCommonSense

Battery life has improved a ton for me since I did the update. Maybe you should try rebooting the phone into recovery mode and clearing your cache partition. I do that after every software update. Also, go thru the google play store and the Galaxy apps store and make sure all of your apps are updated. And when u do update them all, reboot the phone for a fresh start. When I initially did the nougat update my camera wouldn’t load. When I cleared the cache partition and rebooted, everything works so much better than b4.

  • jake

Great update. Google did a good job packing Nougat with tons of very useful new features, and Samsung plus T-Mobile did a great job porting it. I appreciate having the night mode and WiFi tether toggle available from the pull-down quick settings, and I also really appreciate being able to instantly hop between the last two apps I used by double-tapping the multi-task soft key. It’s running very smoothly overall too!

    • BreakThaLawFTP

I did not know double tapping did that!!!

      • Phil

        Me neither very sweet feature!

  • DetroitTechnoFan

    • You get an upgrade, you can drop it to 720p on the screen. I didn’t like the black/white power saving mode.

      • DetroitTechnoFan

Straight up, this has to be my LEAST favorite version of Android I’ve ever used, even versus Eclair on the Motorola Cliq! It’s ugly, clunky, and just sucks overall. Is it even possible to revert back to 6.0? I really don’t find this to be any improvement.

        • Stanislaus Zbyszko

Yes. You can damage your phone and pay $150 to get a replacement with 6.0. Hurry, before they start loading Nougat on them.

  • This did wonders for the S7/S7 Egde. Prior Note 7 Owners will be happy with this update!

  • JJCommonSense

Yo.. seriously, I was about ready to toss my S7E out the window because of how slow and “heavy” it had become. I was using Nova Launcher, which helped. This Nougat update has been a LIFE SAVER… it takes me back to the days of my Note7. I love that I can reduce the resolution to 1080p or 720p if I choose. Ive been on 1080p and havent missed anything. I will say, when I initially did the update my camera app wouldnt open. It would say “camera operation failed”… then I cleared my cache partition from the recovery menu and everything has been super smooth every since. I don’t even use the Nova Launcher anymore. Just a suggestion to the masses, when u do the update to a new version of Android, youre probably going yo have a ton of apps that need to be updated as well. Make sure u update all of them or you’ll run into problems. Also, anytime u do an OS update, or even update a bunch of apps, its always good to power cycle your device. When I worked in retail and would sell and service peoples devices I would encourage them to power cycle their devices like every 3 days or at least once a week… it helps you to have a fresh connection to the closest towers and your apps run more smoothly..

I downloaded over the weekend. No major issues, but now my LED won’t notify me when I get an email. Anyone else had this problem?

  • Astrid

Downloaded yesterday all is good except constantly getting calendar noti error, and it’s an error as I already have it to show notifications so there shouldn’t be an alert for this anymore. Anyone have this issue and know how to fix?

    • Fairlington

I’m getting the same error. Downloaded today. Would really like to know how to address this.

  • vinnyjr

Can’t add shortcut phrases to my stock keyboard so typing is faster. There is no place to add these phrases. Does anyone have the same problem? Other than that it is beautiful. Thank You.

  • Ed Liberman

Not happy at all. Notification interface is harder to read, battery life is worse, swiping on the keyboard is very inaccurate, it puts a space at the beginning of all my texts, apps are now occasionally and randomly crashing, and there’s a lag when doing almost anything. This looks like it has the potential to be a good update, but it definitely needed more beta testing before forcing it out to the masses. I’m not sure why people keep saying that Note 7 owners would be happy with this update because it doesn’t give you the tablet like features of the Note 7. It only brought the bugs.

  • Mike Simon

Loaded mine yesterday. Love it. Reminds me of my Note 7 (may she rest in peace) Haven’t noticed any change in the battery life.

  • Jeremy Curtis

Got this on my S7 this morning and it randomly reboots my phone every few hours,I’d rather uninstall is update until they work out the bugs.

  • Serrato267

New update for S7 crashes apps, has an annoying layout and battery seems to drain faster.
Regret the update. How can i change it back?

    • Omegajb

I’ve seen the opposite. Have you tried deleting the system cache?

      • Serrato267

        Appreciate the help.
I followed the steps to wipe my entire cache, but having same issue.

Came to the conclusion that a particular app is not compatible and the app has no new updates.

        Thanks anyway.

        • Omegajb

I’m finding the same on a couple of apps I have too, hopefully we’ll get some updates soon.

    • Stanislaus Zbyszko

It seems to charge a lot faster and seems better on battery life for myself.

      • Serrato267

        Appreciate the help.
The charging has got to do with the charger. Never had a problem with that since I use the Samsung fast charger.

        • Stanislaus Zbyszko

It’s as if there is less stuff running in the background, so it charges more quickly.

    • Phil

Update your apps in playstore & go into settings – “Device Maintenance” clean things up.

      • Serrato267

        Appreciate the help.
I have determined that the app issue is the app itself. Not compatible to the new update.

Thanks again, but I would rather have Marshmallow back.
        For now, anyways.

  • Mario

I updated to nougat and besides the lag, the photos on my SD card have stopped appearing and show up as “unsupported files” I had them encrypted while on marshmallow. Are they corrupted or is my phone just not reading the files? I don’t know what to do!

  • Phil

After 3 days of N use of Ive found smooth OS & crap crap battery life 15%-18% loss
Very disappointing looking forward to fix

  • Nebah Alqassir

My notifications keep popping up from Whatsapp, it doesnt just show the whatsapp icon, it popsup on my screen with the entire message. It is annoying. How do I disable it with this new update?? Please help. Thank You.

  • C D

WORST UPDATE EVER. Back to the stone ages – with f’n Stick Figures. No color, tiny print. Nougat update absolutely SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Changing the way everything looks is NOT an upgrade.

How do I change my Galaxy S7 BACK ?????????????????

    • Violet ‘Violetta’ Jaworska

please share if you found out how!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      I absolutely HATE IT!!!!

  • Violet ‘Violetta’ Jaworska

I absolutely hate the update and my phone now!
I am not noticing any improvements but hate the small harder to read font and everything is white, just outlined not filled it with color so it is harder to see when outside in sunlight….i recommend not doing it, waiting and perhaps seeing it in a store/on friends phone first. I do not see any advantages and really dislike it.
IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK??? I just bough this phone for $600 and now i do not like it!

    • Head_em_out

I agree with you 100%, I am going to t-mobile tomorrow to complain.

  • Head_em_out

Where is the “Ultra Power Saving” option that turned my phone into black and white.

  • T

Why isn’t the LED notification light working? This sucks!

  • Vlad

After official update, s7 edge randomly restarts? Is it possible to fix? Already tried master reset..

  • Dolores Estrada

I absolutely hate this update. It changed everything on my phone. I cant find anything like before. I am so very unhappy with my phone now and still have to make payments for something I do not like. Small font on a dead white boring screen. I want all my colors back. Samsung and TMobile need to reverse these unwanted updates!! This SUCKS!!!

    • happystweets

Echo this! I Googled the update to find out what the devil was supposed to be worthwhile about it, because I HATE it. Everything has been moved around just for the sake of change, the colors and fonts are awful making things harder to read. I have trouble finding things now after using my phone a long time. Even deleting a text is different, for example. It’s as if the phone took a gigantic step backwards in time, it’s so simplistic and early-PC looking. WHY did they make these unnecessary cosmetic changes?? Not happy!

      • john

Is there anyway to roll it back to the previous OS?
