Windows Phone 8.1 update arrives for T-Mobile Lumia 521

Last week, the Lumia Cyan/Windows Phone 8.1 update finally arrived for the Nokia Lumia 925 on T-Mobile. And at some point over the past couple of days, the same updated landed for T-Mo’s popular budget-friendly Lumia 521. The updates were both confirmed by Microsoft exec, Joe Belfiore on Twitter today.

T-Mobile updated its support pages with the update information, and as well as being equipped with Windows Phone 8.1, the device now has access to the free inflight Wi-Fi texting on GoGo flights.

File size is around 320MB and shouldn’t take too long to download an install. Head on over to your phone settings, and check for the update manually and you should find it there.

Its like having a new phone. Almost as good as an iPhone 5S!

I got tired of waiting and no longer have my Windows phones. Wifi calling wasn’t working and I couldn’t keep waiting.

Finally! Like the new look and new features.

Every time a T-Mobile handset update gets delayed, I blame it on their integration and testing of WiFi calling. Of course I have no way of knowing if that’s actually true, since T-Mobile doesn’t comment about such things. Hopefully the next version of Windows Phone has WiFi calling baked-in, as with iOS 8 and Android 5.0 Lollipop. That’ll keep developer preview users from losing the feature, and streamline future update rollouts.

  • I downloaded it on Wednesday, took four hours to do it. Well worth it, as it fixed the WiFi Calling problems, and it also allows MMS messages on WiFi Calling.

Does the 521 run 8.1 at a decent speed or does it seem to struggle? I would be very interested in hearing your comments.

I was running Preview for Developers 8.1 on an 810 and two 925’s. The only thing this official version did was let SMS work while on WFC. Oh, also changed from Black to Cyan, although I don’t know what that did for me in the real world. The WFC is just as bad as ever, someone calls me, I get one ring, it shoots to voicemail.
