Best Buy To Sell T-Mobile G2, Available For Pre-order This Friday

Sounds like that October 6th date we dropped in as an update to the G2 post last night will turn out to be more than just a rumor. Best Buy has announced their very own presale of the T-Mobile G2 with Google available for pre-order starting this Friday, September 10th for $199.99. The G2 needs little introduction in these parts but I see no reason why the Best Buy offer shouldn’t attract quite a few of you given the lack of a rebate compared to T-Mobile’s own retail offering.

What else can we say here, unless you haven’t read the website since this morning, the T-Mobile G2 will be the first HSPA+ phone for T-Mobile. It’s got a keyboard and it makes phone calls. Available at Best Buy October 6th, which we predict will be the rollout day for everyone selling this device, including T-Mobile itself. October 6th, that’s the day, begin your countdowns.

*sorry.. meant to say 17.5 DAYS of standby battery life

      • So hop I take it you’re getting the G2?

      • J-Hop2o6

lol.. its close enough to my TP2, but the Android version.. plus a wayyyy better processor than my TP2’s MSM 7200a.. smh.. what about u?

  • ceas

i think you ment pre-order starting this friday “september 10th”??

    • David, Managing Editor

      Woops yes, I’ll change that!

      • lil’ clown

Damn I don’t know wich one between the g2 or vibrant, I was thinking the vibrant but I hate touchwiz then I had seen a vid on youtube with the vibrant running launcher pro and it made me reconsider the vibrant. So here I am again not knowing wich one to get.

    • GrammarNazi

      *meant, not ment

  • skorn

    Yay can’t Wait

  • ceas

well this dosent matter to me.. im going to wait for t-mobile because i have that $500 credit line…

    • Jason

So do I, but I’ll ask you this. How is paying for it going to work? The website says $125 down and then, depending on whether you have even more or even more plus, you pay the rest off over 3 months or 19 months. My main question is, since I still owe money on my Cliq (dammit), will they add the monthly payment on top of the payment I make every month already, or will they just tack it on to the end and I just keep paying $20 a month for the next two years or so? I’m hoping for the latter, otherwise I don’t think I’ll be able to afford it. That’ll just be severely disappointing for me. I want this phone so bad!

  • Me

the appeal of a keyboard is making me wasn’t this over my vibrant! I wouldn’t be surprised if the screen looks dull to being spoiled with the vibrant… If someone is willing to trade I would probably do so just for that htc build quality.

    • Ryan

“the appeal of a keyboard is making me wasn’t this over my vibrant.” looks like your swype didn’t get the WANT in there on your vibrant. i have that problem too though. keyboard seems a little attractive.

      • phonegeek

yea my swype messes me up daily lol

      • Frigadroid

You have to teach your phone the words in swype it gets better at prediction the more you use it and the more you learn about all the tips. Just like the voice to text on the android keyboard.

      • MattB

Meh… I got a MTS over the Vibrant for the keyboard, and I have to say, unless I am entering a unique email, or password, I rarely use the physical keyboard. Swype is significantly faster to the point where I can deal with the occasional ‘swypo’.

  • meems

I believe I will be getting this one Ive got the mytouch slide now and im not to keen on the keyboard. no keyboard compares to my sk lx.. but I need to find something to replace it

    • GrammarNazi

      *not too

  • Foxeh

So I was in the mall today and handled both the iPhone 4 and Vibrant back to back… now I see what some people mean when they say the Vibrant feels cheap. Still, the Vibrant is a potent device.

As for the G2, I signed up to “stay in the loop.” If I can just preorder at Best Buy without having to deal with the mail-in-rebate, get some Reward Zone points and all before T-Mobile even emails me ANYTHING about this phone… why did I sign up for that again?

  • Tom

Kind of weird if they allowed people to preorder at Best Buy before tmobile. I’d rather get it through them, the monthly payments are nice since I’ll only end up getting the half upgrade. I’m assuming it’ll cost me 329.99

  • TonyJohns

Never preordered before, will this just be for “contract” customers? What about EM+ customers? How does preorder work for that?

    • Will

I’d like to know this too. Do we pay for it then or how does that work? Thx you all!

  • 30014

Does anyone know the price on a 1 year contract?

    • Acacia Strain

$499 I’m assuming because Tmo no longer does 1 year contracts or 1 year extensions. (To my knowledge)

It’s either $199 for a two year renewal or $499 flat out with no extension.

      • Rosario

Actually they still do 1yr contracts, you just need to tell them you want a 1yr compared to a 2yr. They just add on an extra $50 to cost of the phone. So in this case it would cost you $249.

I did a 1yr contract when I got my TP2 last year. I knew a new phone would be out by this time that I would want, so for me it was better to pay the extra $50 then compared to being stuck in a contract and having to pay full price for a new one. Im still debating if Im gonna do a 1yr this time when I get the G2. From what Im seeing, the G2 might just make it a full 2yrs before it craps out on me. But then to just do a 1yr and having the option of upgrading if the times comes is nice.

      • Mrgoogle

They used to do 1 year contracts until the even more and even more plus plans came out in october of 2009. Now it’s just the 2 year contract or no contract option. No contract is cheaper anyway even after paying more for the phone.

      • 30014

I know for a fact that tmo still does 1 yr contracts, I was just curious about the phone price at that length.

      • Farhan

        @ Rosario and 30014.

No more 1 year contracts at TMobile. I bought an HTC HD2 in June and spoke to a couple of TMobile reps and both said they no longer do the 1 year contracts. I would be interested in knowing which TMobile store rep told you this so I can get out of my two year contract onto a 1 year.

  • mmeyer4663

    Pre-order a month early?? WOW!

    • Technogen

More like “only a month early?!” it was like 2 months for the G1.

  • Technogen

I’m hoping that T-mo launches the pre-order ones from them before everyone else. They did that with the G1 with people that pre-ordered getting it like a week early.

    • Foxeh

Woah, that’s a good point. I just walked in on release day for my G1 (no preorder), but if T-Mo preorders for existing customers get shipped early, it may be worth holding off to see what they say.

    • BRI

Yup that sounds about right..Especially if you think about it this way..The first date was Sept. 29th..Exactly a week earlier than Oct. 6..Good thing I’m a long time customer and just in time for a full upgrade. Niiice!!

  • Michael

Yea I’m also wondering if the best buy preorder will be for people already on a contract. i have even more plus and will pay the full amount.

  • Technogen

Why does this thing have an icon for Web2go, when none of the other shots from T-mo has it?

  • Michael

So I already have a even more plus plan so I pay full price for phones. Can I go to best buy to preorder this and how much would I have to pay. I’m lost, maybe I have to wait till T-Mobile has preorders

  • I do not like the layout of the keyboard

    • J-Hop2o6

      and it doesn’t like u

      • phonegeek

        (Bart simpson laugh) ha hah

  • alex32

Its a little sad that best buy beat tmobile in terms of pre ordering..but whatever, its a start. It blows that this phone will be released in october 6 in tmobile stores instead of september 29th. The thought of waiting an extra month with my curve 8900 disgusts me. Whatever, patience is a virtue. Im only buying this phone in tmobile stores.

    • Technogen

Yeah, unless T-mo says they are going to ship early for pre-orders I am going to just go with a Vibrant next week when I get paid.

      • alex32

I hope tmobile ships early for pre orders, I want this phone now. I have been waiting for a year for a phone worth upgrading. I have been waiting for a nexus one with a keyboard. I have been waiting for an android phone with 2.2 froyo vanilla. This is it, this is the phone worth upgrading.
Just wait out a month instead of going for a Vibrant, itll pass by quick.

    • Newmexican

Its actually a bit annoying. T-Mobile announced that the G2 will be available first for existing customers as a pre-order and they let us sign up to be notified by email.

Suddenly Best Buy beats them to a pre-order for NEW activations.

As much as I like T-mobile they are not professional at all in handling this G2 launch.

      I am frustrated

      • MattB

Dude… Best Buy is only going to get ‘x’ amount of phones allotted to them, regardless of the quantity of pre-orders. Just because they are allowing pre-orders on their unique inventory, doesn’t mean it will affect availability at other locations, especially TMO Corp… relax.

  • mtnman

I’ll skip on this one and just wait to see what the MTHD has in store. See if I can get than on cheaper at Best Buy or Car Toys.

    • phonegeek

thats the smart thing to do i was thinking the same exact thing

  • klotz

It barely has a keyboard. Look at all the missing keys. I can understand no ` but no []? How is this usable?

  • stockypeasant

    David, take a poll.

    a) get the G2
    b) hold off for tmo future device
    c) switch carrier

  • Acacia Strain

    The question is:

Will the Vibrant get 2.2 before the G2 is officially in stores?

    • Chris

      Not even close

    • Technogen

Possibly, the 2.2 alpha for the Galaxy S line was leaked back in July 28th, and in Aug said that the update would be out in late Sept. So even if the G2 was launched Sept 29th the Galaxy S still has a good chance of getting 2.2 before.

  • stream

I’m hoping best buy will finally tell us if this is the only color available.

    • J-Hop2o6

im sure it will be one color at launch.. i wonder if more colors will be available after launch.

  • 007

What is so good about this phone….
    Htc is the worst ever….

  • lakeshow

hey does anyone notice the ffc on the top left hand of the screen in this pic? or the bottem left of the phone in landscape?

  • lakeshow

oh ok thanks for the clarification.

  • lakeshow

if i get this phone and if the windows 7 phone comes out a month later, will i be able to upgrade early?

  • DaBoiBank$

Really ya’ll should wait for tmobile to offer it because if ya’ll preorder it and turns out its included in the BOGO its going to suck knowing that ya’ll will have to wait and return the phone to best buy(hoping theres no restocking fee)…im jus saying!

    • G1ana

That is what I was wondering, if we preorder it with T-mobile would it be eligible for the BOGO offer, because I need to get a phone for my daughter also???

  • JoshL

I’m going to wait for T-Mobiles pre-order. Something tells me that it will be different than what Best Buy can do (they have repeatedly hinted that existing customers will be able to get the phone first..)

  • terryjohnson16

I might get it to replace my nexus one. Plus having faster CPU and QWERTY keyboard and Tmobile support.

  • mikeybot

Just checked at the one in Mt. Laurel, NJ and they “don’t have any information on it yet”

  • quadbaby

My Best buy say the only sell pre paid phones and that I should check at the smaller locations

  • troyag1

So much for current customers getting the first crack at it.

  • G1 user waitin for G2

Im not seeing it on the best buy website, has anyone seen the pre-order? or is it expected later in the day?

  • GrammarNazi

    To, too, two
    They, their, they’re

I am going to pass on this phone.
They are going to pass on it too.
Their pricing may not include two for one.
    They’re a great network though.

    • La El

Hey GrammaNutzi ~ Your getting to worked up. You should take to aspirin and relax. Its not such a big deal that you want to loose your mind over it. Irregardless, hopefully their going to understand what your saying.

      • GrammarNazi

        I love you!

  • AaronHowardNM

Just a FYI that if you do pre-order the G2 from Best Buy it does not look like they are going to ship them before it is available from retail. I got this reply from them via Twitter.

@aaronhowardnm we do not have a plan to ship any out before retail at this time
17 minutes ago via web in reply to aaronhowardnm

    • Chad

Why would you think they’d ship early?

  • DK

The phone feels nice, but it’s heavy…

    • Chad

Since you’ve held one, the make or break point for me is the video camera. Is it 30fps? The Vibrant is and it’s amazing, and that’s the only saving grace of that phone for me.

  • J

called the closest bestbuy and they also said “no information on it yet”

  • Jim Leary

The Best Buy pre-order deal was a bust. I went to my Best Buy store and waited in line for an hour. When it was finally my turn, they said, “We don’t carry T-Mobile at this store; only Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.” So I called Best Buy Mobile and asked if I could pre-order it over the phone and was told, “Sure, let me check with my Supervisor because I’ve never done this before.” The rep came back and said, “We don’t carry T-Mobile at this time but we will at the end of the month so you won’t be able to pre-order the phone today.” I will wait for T-Mobile to make it available to me.

    • JSY581

Yea thats strange. I was in NH where TMO is almost non-exsistant, and BBY Mobile sells TMO. I head over to Upstate NY, where they have HSPA, neither BBY Mobile or the BBY stores do not sell TMO, doesn’t make much sense to me…

  • John

What are those white keys on the bottom?

    • J-Hop2o6

those silver/white keys are Shortcut buttons that YOU set.. there’s an app pre-installed that manages it.

  • Infamous20v

Does the keyboard bother anybody? I don’t like the fact that there is no dedicated number row. The stock on screen keyboard forces you to shift to select a number, and this offers no relief for that. Pre-order would be nice, but there are just too many new design features to go on a whim and buy before trying. I’ll probably wait for the release date since it’s only a couple of weeks.

  • Foxeh

I just read on Android Central that Costco will be carrying the G2. So do I order from T-Mobile and hope to get it early or wait for Costco and hope to get it cheaper?

    • J

approximately how much cheaper would costco have it?

Im totally disappointed by the appearance of this device… not only does it not make use of the entire front of the device, it uses the cheap mytouch slide keypad without the number row…. WTF????? What is this supposed to compete with? This this looks hideous and does not seem to have the power and punch it should have…. Looks like T-Mobile missed the boat again…. Instead of making a device ahead of the game, we are getting something thats gonna be out of date in 2 months….

    • Joshua

You are a fool. It’s a brand new processor better than the nexus one. How is that not more power and punch? It has 2.2, and a led for the camera. It’s the best phone tmobile is offering right now and everyone forgets hspa+ because a lot don’t have it. Well i live in an area that does have it. If you don’t live in an hspa+ stfu on giving your opinion of the phone.

  • Michael

I call my local best buy store at bay area, they don’t carry it, so the pre order might only good for some location

  • Patrick B

Does it concern anyone that this phone only has 512mb of RAM? Please comment

  • andy

i noticed the 512 mb of ram as well, however android 2.2 also uses JIT (Just in Time) compiler which i believe alleviates the lower ram problems with phones as it only compiles apps it needs to run right after it gets called so the ram is not being held up with other applications.

  • Vaughn B

TMO G2 or Sprint 4G… My side kick is on its last leg, my contract is up. And i want a new smart phone with a qwerty keyboard with all the works… So which do you guys think would be a better phone?

    • Vaughn B

correction.. G2 or Sprint Epic 4G?

  • Damian

I work for T-MO and as of now we only have dummy models of the phone. The phone will come in 2 colors white silver and black silver.

    • David, Managing Editor

      Want to send pictures in??

  • Steve

Is there anyone else wishing that this came with the new HTC Sense like the HTC Desire Z does?
