Has Your Smartphone Ever Gone Through The Laundry? T-Mobile JUMP! Can Help

T-Mobile’s JUMP! commercials may be silly, but I’d be lying if I said I never “accidentally” put my phone through the wash. We all know what happens when you walk into your local carrier store afterwards…only to discover you have no insurance. T-Mobile JUMP! may be just what the doctor ordered for anyone who has ever experienced this unfortunate laundry scenario.

Going from touchscreen to melted-screen is frustrating. Luckily, T-Mobile JUMP!™ lets you upgrade when you want, not when you’re told.

I love these series of commercials! My favorite is still the phone with the broken screen that cuts his fingers every time he unlocks it. The look he gives the phone before unlocking it is priceless.

    • LC

I love that one, and then the one where he’s being held up…I love when he sticks his own hand in his jacket pocket and starts chasing the thief in the garage haha.

  • Jay J. Blanco

    I love it!!!!!

  • thepanttherlady

Except they won’t accept water damaged phones when Jump!ing. :/

    • None

      It was in the dryer.

      • thepanttherlady

I don’t know about you but I usually wash my pants before I put them in a dryer.

      • LC

Clothes usually go through the washing machine before being put into the dryer ;)

    • LC

That’s when the insurance portion kicks in!

      • thepanttherlady

I just have a hard time paying an additional $175 (insurance deductible) for a device I already own (am paying for) but in this situation, you’d have no choice if you need a new phone.

        • LC

Otherwise you just end up paying for a phone that you can’t use.

        • Singleweird

we cant omit personally responsibility completely. you have to take SOMEwhat of a hit for destroying a $600 device

        • thepanttherlady

          Good thing I don’t. :)

        • bob90210

You’re not paying $175 for a phone you already own. You’re paying $175 for the replacement phone.

        • corepreacher

Instead of paying off your phone….you pay the deductible and JUMP pays the rest and then you pay your down payment on the new device. and all is well again!!

        • thepanttherlady

I know how the program works, even got my daughters on it. I personally, dropped my insurance long ago. I’ve only ever filed a claim twice in almost 20 years and those were for lost phones, never damaged.

        • Stone Cold

I have had to file a couple claims but those were on lesser handsets in almost 9 years.

  • Alex Zapata

He needs to do one as the president of Hollywood.

  • Chris

I didn’t realize JUMP stood for Just Upgrade My Phone until my non-tech savvy friend told me…the marketing is working.

    • g2a5b0e

      Wow. Me neither.

    • Dakota

It’s not working because no one knows that. Is that on Tmobile website? Or did your friend come up with it. I haven’t met one person who doesn’t actively follow the industry or reads blogs that has any idea of what Tmobile new plans are. When iPhone announced, all articles quoted 199 contract prices on the other 3..no Tmobile mentions. Casual user goes on Apple’s website or Apple store & they see you can pay 199 on ATT, Sprint or Verizon or 649 to use on Tmobile… Frankenstein commercials & people living in shoes didn’t communicate messages.
Not even talking about whether Jump is good deal or not or better than what other carriers offer. Its just with every carrier having same type of plan, Tmobile doesn’t stand out as different. And it still suffers from really bad reputation outside large urban centers

      • KingCobra

I agree T-Mobile needs to do something about their marketing at Apple Stores. On the compare carriers iPads they have on display it shows the 5C for $99 on all the other carriers, $549 on T-Mobile. They need to either come up with some agreement for Apple to sell phones with EIP or get them to change the way the plans/phones are advertised.

        • Chardog

Apple is going to do what they are going to do. They control the carriers with parameters to sell their devices. It doesn’t work the other way around (the carriers controlling how they advertise their services).

      • Chris

He saw it on a commercial. He was telling me how impressed he was with that clever slogan. I know it sounds weird but we’re nerds and he knows I love t-mobile so he was telling me about it. He’s on Verizon and wouldn’t switch, but just mentioned the cleverness of it.

T-Mobile must have a lot of money hiring Bill Hader and Robert Downey, Jr.!

    • B-Mobile

      HTC Hired Robert Downey Jr

      • Whiskers

And that’s why their going broke….Bad decisions !

        • Prod1702

how are they going broke when they record high revenue a few months ago.

  • D Velasquez

My Xperia Acro S did last week, nothing to worry about still works

  • Jose Pizzle!

For those of you that have Android Phones like the Xperia or S4 or LG G2 I have some cool apps on my youtube channel you can check

  • steveb944

Been there done that. Difference being after a few tumbles in the drier my HTC Amaze 4G was still working. They make the best hardware.

  • Shawn998

Hope I never have to use the insurance that I am required to have for the JUMP service. 175.00 out of my pocket to replace my smartphone. WOW why have the insurance?

    • superg05

so you wont have to pay another 450-700 dollars maybe?

    • Prod1702

Why have car insurance. So you don’t have to pay more then your deducible.

      • Dakota

Because car insurance is required by law. And car repairs are a lot more expensive than a cell phone

        • kay

Actually in a few states car insurance is NOT required by law.

    • KingCobra

For people who can’t afford to pay $650 all at once for a new phone if they break theirs.

    • Xanderalmighty

Still better than a full priced phone. 175 does seem like a lot but still better than let say 750.

  • The math: do it

Let’s play a game called MATH. You have to pay $10 a month to be in the JUMP program. On top of a $22.91 a month x24 months fee. You’re basically paying IF YOU UPGRADE EVERY SIX MONTHS (assuming you only buy the $99 down payment phones) $650 a year for your new phones… and never actually owning any of them. If you keep a $99 phone that’s $22.91 a month – without upgrading on JUMP it’s $890. Pointless. Ouch. So you basically NEED to upgrade to even make this worth your while.
Now this too, is also assuming you’re actually not breaking anything – which for smartphones (the only reason to even do this…. ) is from $150-$175 deductible for them to send you a replacement (insurance included with JUMP, mandatory and part of the program) and at that point, you aren’t even getting a NEW phone…. unless their refurbs are completely out of stock – which they’d just assume delay you getting a replacement until they can fix some of the other broken ones. This is a process that, with my wife’s S3, took 3 weeks before they had more refurbs in stock, and she was stuck with a dumbphone flip Samsung loaner (which we ALSO had to pay $75 for, refunded when returned) just to cover that time frame. Which is an eternity. MATH. It’s a game you really have to take into consideration when balancing your finances and seeing if this whole “awesome” program is really worth a damn. Your call, consumer. Your call..
Consider this though. The $650 a year is actually what a smart phone costs, outright. So, if you really do require the latest and greatest, by all means – this program is for you. You were probably planning on burning the money anyway. For the rest of us who can wait 1-2 years, this is pointless and a waste of money.
ALSO consider this – If you were to buy a $650 phone and planned on keeping it two full years you can: 1. Buy it direct for $650 from the manufacturer and they offer 24months financing at only $27 a month (assuming no tax for online purchases and they offer no interest financing) OR 2. You can buy it from T-Mobile and pay on EIP (no interest) without the JUMP plan, adding $23 to your bill for 2 years PLUS you have to pay $99 + tax, which using 7% is another $46 for a total that is slightly higher (because: tax).

    • David Lebron

You realize you’re also getting insurance with that correct??? Do your little math equation followed by your 2,000,000 word essay on Verizon’s or AT&T’s plan…go eat the grass on the other side if you don’t like it

      • Xanderalmighty

True you Dont get insurance. But an upside to Verizon’s plan is that when it’s time and you wanna get a new phone, You Dont need to pay down payment for that new phone. By returning the first phone , you start a monthly payment plan with second (as long as its been 6 months and half paid off). They all have their minor benefits but Tmobile seems to cater more.

    • superg05

so insurance is 12 a month but its included in jump which is 10 a month so its just like paying for insurance anyway with the option to upgrade

      • uncarrier

Exactly! Insurance was $11.99 for premium smart phones with no jump included. Now its $10 and includes JUMP! A really good deal.

    • KingCobra

Of course. Just like you said it’s for those who always want the latest and greatest. No one ever claimed it was a great deal for people who only upgrade every 2 years.

  • Don Kim

Buy unlocked phones and take care of your phone.
    Problem solved.

  • HydeMark

Hey is this JUMP thingy new? When did it start? I must’ve been away from this site for a while. I guess I’ll be again because it smells like marketing here.

  • brenda

Yes I left my xperia z in my pants pocket n put in the washing machine by accident I rememberd 15 mins later ran to the washing machine took it out it was soaked and was soapy just rinsed it on the sink dried it with a towel it was good to go.. After this incident every phone I get in the future ima make sure its waterproof. Nothing happen d to my xperia z its still running good im surprised the soap didnt do a thing.

    • David Lebron

I love my Xperia Z. Wish T-Mobile would get the Z1

      • thepanttherlady

I’ll be getting my Z1 today. *excited*

        • David Lebron

*Jealous* lol if you don’t mind me asking, how much was it after VAT and shipping from overseas???

        • thepanttherlady

There is no VAT when it’s coming to the US. With shipping I paid $769.84 and it comes with the Sony Smartwatch 2 (not shipping until the end of Sept/beginning of Oct).

        • David Lebron

What?! I didn’t get it because it added VAT in my cart when I switched to US for shipping – it was giving me a price closer to $950 USD :/ I’m hurt. Sure the pre-order deal is up too… Enjoy yours!!!

        • thepanttherlady

Go through clove.co.uk. Offer is still there. They shipped the phone Friday and I got it today.

        • David Lebron

You’re awesome!!! I just ordered it through them and got the offer!! Thanks!!

        • thepanttherlady

          Whoop! Congrats. :)

I’m keeping my fingers crossed (though not tightly) that we’ll be able to get some of the Sony content that’s offered even though we’re in a different region.

        • David Lebron

I was wondering what that content is. Maybe music downloads?? I’m good with the phone. Smartwatch is a bonus and anything else would be unnecessary lol

        • thepanttherlady

Content is music, movies, and PlayStation games.

On 4g I got 9.18 Mbps down and 8.84 Mbps up. On HSPA + I got 10.20 Mbps down and 0.61 Mbps up.

        • David Lebron

How do you insure your phones???

        • thepanttherlady

I don’t. I’ve only ever used it twice so it’s a waste of $ for me. There are companies out there that will insure phones but my understanding is it’s only for damage, not loss.

        • David Lebron

Got my Z1 yesterday! Have you heard anything about the smartwatch? I was told they were shipping it out yesterday but didn’t get a notification

        • thepanttherlady

Did you buy through Clove or Handtec? I think Clove is shipping theirs out towards the end of the week, I haven’t gotten an email notification yet. Some show ordered their XZ1′s through Handtec are reporting having received notifications for theirs.

How do you like it so far? I’m loving mine. Can’t wait for someone to come out with a tempered glass oleophobic screen protector so I can ditch this dang case I have on it. :/

        • David Lebron

Got mine through clove so I guess we’re in the same boat lol. I LOVE the phone!! Much faster than the Z. The camera software needs a little tweeking but I’m not complaining. I just ordered the incipio duo pro for mine

        • thepanttherlady

Just an FYI, I emailed Brando the other day and they responded saying they will be offering a tempered glass oleophobic screen protector and to keep watching the site over the next 2 weeks. :)

Also, my free Sony Smartwatch 2 came in today. Have you gotten yours yet?

        • David Lebron

That’s awesome!!! My screen protector that came with the phone isn’t cutting it. And no I haven’t received my smart watch 2 yet (-_-) but I’m glad you got yours – how’s is it???

        • thepanttherlady

I agree, I had to ditch mine. I ordered one off of Ebay but it isn’t much better. I’m really disappointed that Phantomskinz doesn’t already have a full body shield for this yet. I just bought a front/back screen protector on Ebay this morning, hopefully it’s better than what I’m using until Brando gets their rear in gear.

I see Clove hasn’t sent out their mass email yet that all the free phones have shipped yet so they’re still working hard. LOL Plus I just realized that you ordered later than I did. I actually pre-ordered mine a week before it was released, well the black one anyway. Watch is ok. You can see a small preview of emails but not respond. Read texts but only respond with an emoticon or one of their templates. Personally, it’s too small to try and read/respond to an entire email so it works for me and what I’d use it for. Battery life seems pretty good too.

I was going to tell you something else but for the life of me can’t remember now. When I do, I’ll be back. LOL

I KNEW as soon as I hit post I’d remember. :/ I read a rumor today that the XZ1 is slated to get 4.4 (KitKat) in November. We shall see. :)

        • David Lebron

          That would be amazing!!

I can’t wait to get the watch!! I figured they’d be sending them in the order the phones were ordered. Did you ever get an email notification?? they told me I wouldn’t get one just double checking…. Soooo many fingerprints on my screen after this post lol

        • thepanttherlady

Decided to read the rumor a bit more closely and I think the one site has a typo as other sites are stating it’ll be 4.3 with 4.4 coming end of the year or beginning of next. Either way, Sony seems (hopefully) to be learning their lesson and updating more quickly.

No notification. Clove stated they’ll send out a mass email to all recipients of the free smartwatch once they’re all shipped. It magically appeared on my desk at work the other day while I was at work. :) It’ll come via USPS.

And fingerprints are EXACTLY why I have to have a back protector (or case if there isn’t one) and oleophobic front protector. Grrrrrr!!!

        • David Lebron

Lol soon fingerprints and smudges will be a thing of the past.

When your phone is on LTE it doesn’t say “LTE” right??? Mine shows 4G I figured this was because it was the international version but saw a video review where the phone actually showed LTE – just curious

        • thepanttherlady

          We can hope! :)

Yes, 4G = LTE. I think the phones showing LTE are the ones that flashed another version of the .534 update.

I for this from xda and tried it once to confirm it really was on LTE (even though the speeds told me I was):
While you’re connected to 4G, you can hit *#*#4636#*#* on your dialer and go to “Phone information”. Scroll down to “Network type:” and it should tell you whether or not you’re really on HSPA+ or LTE.

        • David Lebron

Awesome, this reassured me :) Yea when I saw the data speeds on “4G” I figured it was LTE but it’s nice to hear I’m not the only one

I’m just hoping the smartwatch gets here before the government shuts down lol

        • David Lebron
        • thepanttherlady

Saw that earlier. Guess who got a personalized email letting me know too? ;)

        • David Lebron

Nice!! You think it’ll take the 7-20 days they say it will? ?

        • thepanttherlady

I got my Brando screen protector yesterday. =D

        • David Lebron

Awesome!!!! I got mine Saturday but I noticed one or two little dust specs after I put it on…. I may need another one lol

        • David Lebron

          Got my smartwatch yesterday!!! :)

        • thepanttherlady

          Whoop!!

        • thepanttherlady

Just wanted to confirm I am picking up LTE on this model.

        • David Lebron

          Awesome :) HSPA+??..I can’t wait!!

        • DoDaDum

Mine just arrived 10 minutes ago! First thing it’s going to do is going into the laundry since I have to do laundry before I can play with it. XD

        • thepanttherlady

LMAO! Did you get white or black? I got white this time around. Mine came in before yours. :P The blonde was strong in me when I got it. First thing I wanted to test was the camera. Couldn’t figure out for the life of me why the photos were coming out fuzzy. Took me a few pics to realize the film on the back was covering the camera lens. D’oh! :) I can’t wait until the body shields I ordered come in so I can remove it.

        • thepanttherlady

How did your laundry test go? :)

  • Mark

The last phone I actually put through the washer & dryer was my original-recipe RAZR (i.e., the feature phone, not the VZ smartphone). I think I did that at least twice, and it still works for an emergency backup phone. I haven’t done it with either of the smartphones I’ve owned as I have to take them out to recharge them every night.
