In Depth With T-Mobile’s New Classic And Value Rate Plans

The news of T-Mobile’s revamped rate plans has been met with trepidation as it’s beginning to feel like T-Mobile can’t hit a sweet spot and constantly changes up their price plan offerings. Once again they are trying some drastic changes just as they did with the announcement of the Even More and Even More Plus plans. As we first posted this morning T-Mobile is doing away with Even More Plus plans in lieu of “Value” plans and “Classic” plans which is the newly renamed Even More offering.

T-Mobile will position the new Value plan as the most inexpensive postpaid rate plan they offer along with the pitch that it doesn’t require a data plan. It does however require a two year contract much to the dismay of Even More Plus users who won’t see any reason to migrate over if they wish to remain sans contract. Along with the two year contract, subsidized handset pricing is a thing of the past for Value plans as customers will pay the full price of the handset though they may do so over a 21 month timeframe.

The obvious emphasis here is the savings customer will receive over the rebranded “Classic” plans over the “Value” plans because of the lower monthly rates. Customers who opt for the Value plan will make an initial down payment equal to the price of the phone on a Classic plan and have an additional 20 payments for the overall cost of the phone. For instance the Classic cost of the HTC Sensation 4G is $249.99 with a full retail cost of $549.99. So the initial payment on a Value plan will be $249.99 with installments of the remaining $300.00. For those remaining 20 months customers will pay $15 a month.

Remember, we’re still around a month away from the expected launch so anything can change. There are plenty of remaining holes that we need to fill in order to get a clear picture of exactly whats going to happen and when.       Buy the phone at retail cost.

    Interesting. I’m not a fan of making everyone get the 2 year contract either way with these plans. They say in the leak that it makes it easier for the customer to decide as their out of pocket costs are the same up-front. So are they going to tell them, “look, it’s a 2 year contract either way and you have to pay the same price today so your monthly bill will be cheaper if you take the value plan.”

    If so, that’s BS. Example- The value plan for an individual who wants unlimited talk+text+5GB data is $74.99. However with any of their so-called “superphones,” you pay $15.00 month. On a classic plan you pay $89.99 month for unlimited talk+text+5GB data and with the $15.00 you will pay, wait for it, $74.99+$15.00= $89.99!!! The exact same damn thing. Unlimited talk+text+2GB Data? Also ends up being $59.99+$15.00= $74.99 on value and what do you know, also $74.99 on the classic plan. You see what I’m getting at, right?

    Have you also seen the potential “migration fees” to switch? Not only do you have to extend 2 years on contract but you can also be charged up to $200 per line to switch. Per line! All this is going to do is confuse customers into thinking they are saving money (or getting screwed) and force them into a 2-yr contract either way for the exact same amount of money (assuming they want data, and most customers want at least a little). Even if you just want the unlimited talk+text for $49.99 with no data on the value plan it’s still not a good deal. Why? Because you would also have to pay $15.00 month which means you would pay $64.99 month as opposed to the $59.99 month if you were on a classic plan. I’m all for getting more postpaid customers but not in this manner. Shame on you T-Mo if you release these plans as they currently stand.

      If you are not buying a new phone (or smartphone which will cost $15 a month), then you are still saving.  Not all phones will cost you that much; there was a $3 – $15 price depending on the phone.  And depending on how fast you pay off the EIP then you will still save.  Not everybody buys a new phone every 2 yrs and not everyone buys a smartphone either.  So I see it as a great set of rate plans.  I’m switching to the $59.99 unlimited plan as soon as it is available.  And as a sidenote, I have three lines on my account – mine and my two sons.  I’m not switching them so I can still use their grandfathered plan to buy whichever phones I need without using the EIP21.  So it just might work wonders for me.  Not everybody will have that option I know.

      But that’s only if people are upgrading phones in-store, if a customer already has the phone they want, and are simply seeking a value plan this would be great for them. Oh and if they pay off the phone early…then their monthly price would drop, EIP is simply available to provide a subsidized-like experience. Think about it, if someone wanted a G2x but only get’s paid 300 dollars a week, they are more likely to want to pay 250 for a phone upfront. The EIP would be 300 dollars and would break up into  20 payments of 15 dollars. Let’s say they do pay the extra 15 bucks for 2 months, that’s 30 bucks, and then they decide to pay off the remaining 270 dollars on EIP, their VALUE plan would go right into effect. Now think about this.. the plan is 59.99 + tax * 24 months = 1439.76 for two years (for Unl+text+2gb) essentially they’d be paying an extra 550 dollars (phone value) and have the option of knocking off 300 dollars up front into monthly payments. 1439.76+550.00= 1989.76 total before taxes for 2 years of service. Where as on a classic plan they’d be paying 79.99 for 2 years(Unl+txt+2gb)= 1919.76+tax to then purchase a smartphone for 250 = 2169.76 before taxes for 2 years of service.

      The person would be saving at least 250 dollars, and that all depends on the phone, oh and the 15 dollars a month is for a superphone, if they were to get a basic phone, which would be logical on a 49.99 plan they’d only pay 3 dollars extra a month or 5 if they want a feature phone. so that’s 52.99 or 54.99 a month. Why would you get an android phone that is always trying to connect to google account, if you don’t have web? If you want value on a plan, I’d hope you’re not stupid enough to buy a super phone on such a plan because you’re losing value in the device. (seeing how you’re not able to use it to it’s full capability).

      But I see where you are coming from and they might make some minor changes… but There is value in the new plans, there is no doubt about it…

      I’d ask for the $100 plan, 5GB data, two phones at T-Mobile cost (meaning I pay $200 total for each handset) and no fees (migration or otherwise).

      Seems to me it is as you say, T-Mobile is desperate to get the post paid numbers up or to at least stop the mass exodus.  I suspect this is because the Q2 numbers don’t look good, perhaps another 100,000 customers lost, despite promotions.

      Also, migrations are not something the average person is going to see. They are there to entice people to not reup something a week AFTER the new plans are in effect… and then migrate AFTER.

    This is the best value in the wireless industry right now, eveen beating out the little guys like MetroPCS and Cricket. That being said, the legacy grandfathered “Preferred” FamilyTime plans with free myFaves and other add-ons are still a way better deal, even before factoring in the upgrades.

      Cricket I can’t comment on, but MetroPCS is $60 per month for their unlimited everything LTE plan. It costs less if you don’t want unlimited everything or don’t want LTE, obviously. So I’m not sure how these plans beat that. They’re competitive, sure, but you have to weigh the (currently) better network against the 24 month commitment and 2Gb data cap.

      …also some of the prepaid plans out there are remarkably good value. Virgin also has $60 per month for “unlimited everything”, but their plans start at $25 for “unlimited everything except voice”. Really, these plans aren’t particularly remarkable, they may beat Verizon or AT&T’s basic rate plans, but they’re not exactly compelling to anyone considering a switch.

      I have signed up with Metro PCS 4G, to try them out for 30 days, before I decide whether to cancel my two T-Mobile lines.

      I bought a Samsung Galaxy Indulge on Craig’s List for $200, NIB.  (The Indulge is Metro’s newest, and best, smartphone.  LTE 4G, 3.5″ display, slide out KB, microSD slot, Android 2.2, Adobe Flash capable, etc.)

      Metro has two 4G plans, $50 and $60.  Neither requires a contract (a significant “feature” IMHO).  Those prices are OTD (out the door) meaning there’s no extra fees or taxes.  (Another factor one needs to consider.  On my T-Mobile lines I pay $9 fees and taxes monthly, on each line).

      The $60 plan gives one “premium web access” meaning that it allows one to play flash content on websites.  The $50 plan does not.  Other than that, the two 4G plans are the same.

      $60 monthly, OTD is less expensive than what T-Mobile offers (on EM+ I pay $70 OTD for unlimited, which means 2GB of course.) From what I have researched Metro’s plan is truly unlimited, the line can get throttled for “abuse” but I have not seen complaints about that.

      Lastly, Metro’s 4G plan (even though it’s LTE) is not as fast as even T-Mobile’s 3.5G, rebranded as 4G.

      But Metro’s 4G connection is faster than 3G, in my tests.

      And that’s what I have to say about Metro, in comparison to T-Mobile’s plans.

        I think Metro is about to step into the spotlight very soon and they know it.  So far they seem to be making all the right moves to position themselves after the sale.

        I live in Nashville, Tn and we don’t have Metro PCS. So as much as people want to try and say the smaller carriers are great i need service when i travel and and have never had a problem with that from tmo. I only have ever heard of metro is this site.

    im having t mobile for personal use in uk. they charge for calls tow lyca mobile and some other networks while 3 mobile users my friedns call them and get their mints charged. Im really not happy with my T mobile. but cantract is still left im i keep on telling everybody that t mobile is not good. :-(

    This is gonna piss me off.  I have been a Tmo customer for a few years and just upgraded to the HTC Sensation and therefore renewed my 2 year contract.  According to these screenshots I’m going to have to pay $200 as a fee to migrate to the new plan?! WTF

      Why should you be entitled to these cheap plans?  You just got a heavy discount on the Sensation.  You can’t get that and cheap plans too.  If you want these cheap plans you have to pay full price for the device.  That’s why they’ll charge you $200 to switch.

    Right now I have the 500min unlimited talk, text, and 5GB of data for $59.99 and now that’ll be $64.99? That’s not a deal. I’d save about $10/mo if I drop to 2GB, but otherwise I am going to be paying $5 more to keep my plan AND I’ll have to be on contract…

        Well, I will repeat for you and others, until people stop with this misinformation:

        There’s no such thing as “grandfathered plans.” This is a concept started between users online in 2006-07.

        The carriers have never recognized it. (Ask a CSR if T-Mobile has the right to change, suspend or terminate your talk and/or data plan.  A competent CSR who knows what is what will respond “yes.”)

        Legally, you enjoy old data plan rates “at the pleasure of the carrier,” meaning it can terminate your plan for any reason, no reason or ridiculous reason, with NO NOTICE.

        Read your terms of service and contract.  There’s NOTHING in there about the concept of “grandfathered plans.”

        What is in your contract is the opposite of what you think exists… specifically, when you signed your contract YOU gave T-Mobile the unilateral right to change, suspend, or terminate your contract.

          T-mobile has internal policies about “grandfathered” rateplan. Reps will use the term because it exsists in black and white for them to use and ive never seen T-Mobile just up and change someones plan unless they asked for it. Unless you work there all your conversations are just he said she said. People get way too emotional over a damn cell phone and you seem to be one of those people.

    once you throw in the $15 a month for the phone every month for the 20 months you end up paying they same price for the classic and value plans

      but if you think about it your total price ends up being cheaper after 24 months because of the extra money you save with the value plan.  This is what i mean and I’m going to use the sensation, which is the ****most expensive full price phone they offer*****.

      for example… unlimited talk, text, and 2gb of web = 79.99 plus $243 for a sensation after rebate, tax, and upgrade fee. total for 2 years = 2163

      Value plan would be 59.99 for the same plan plus $15 per month for a total of $75 plus 300 down… NO UPGRADE FEE.  total for 2 years you total for the monthly and full price for the sensation plus 9.5% tax would be 2040.

      by saving 5 bucks a month for 20 months then 20 bucks for the last 4 months of the contract you’ll save  around $120 over the life of the contract.

    Just trying to fool and loot the american people.  WOW – buy the handset at full price and still sign up for the CONTRACT !!   I just wonder who is came up with this idea this scam and where he/she/they got his MBA from.  No wonder you guys are loosing more customer, but why do you care, you just SOLD yourself, and probably trying to meet the numbers on the contract.

        Plus, it’s obvious that eventually T-Mobile will terminate people’s contracts that are not in line with AT&T’s business philosophy. (I have no doubt T-Mobile is following AT&T orders.  I’d love to see the contract between the parties and what exactly T-Mobile agreed to do and not do pursuant to the agreement.)

        As I said last year, T-Mobile will follow the industry and get rid of its unlimited pricing.  I said back then that T-Mobile would NOT simply yank the rug from under its customers’ feet, it will take “small steps” to keep the uproar to the minimum.

        One small step was T-Mobile selling 10GB, then 5GB, then 2GB as supposed “unlimited” plans.  I then predicted that it would eliminate offering EM+ plans.

        After that, I predicted, T-Mobile would “force” its plans on customers, looking for any reason to “slide” people into its new plans.

        Lastly, I said that by 2012 T-Mobile will have done away with unlimited plans and moved people into the kinds of plans you see mentioned in this article.

        We will see how accurate my crystal balling is.

        Plus, it’s obvious that eventually T-Mobile will terminate people’s contracts that are not in line with AT&T’s business philosophy. (I have no doubt T-Mobile is following AT&T orders.  I’d love to see the contract between the parties and what exactly T-Mobile agreed to do and not do pursuant to the agreement.)

        As I said last year, T-Mobile will follow the industry and get rid of its unlimited pricing.  I said back then that T-Mobile would NOT simply yank the rug from under its customers’ feet, it will take “small steps” to keep the uproar to the minimum.

        One small step was T-Mobile selling 10GB, then 5GB, then 2GB as supposed “unlimited” plans.  I then predicted that it would eliminate offering EM+ plans.

        After that, I predicted, T-Mobile would “force” its plans on customers, looking for any reason to “slide” people into its new plans.

        Lastly, I said that by 2012 T-Mobile will have done away with unlimited plans and moved people into the kinds of plans you see mentioned in this article.

        We will see how accurate my crystal balling is.

      Rob… a little too much drama there.  Actually, I see T-Mobile still being better than the other carriers, it’s not all about having to now pay for phones.  Think about it:

      – Those rates on the new plans are lower than other carriers.

      – The data plans are still a better value than with other carriers.

      – No more subsidized phones is simply doing what the Europeans do.  Over there people pay full price for phones.

      – And T-Mobile is still allowing people to “finance” anything over $300.  While it sounds draconian, ending subsidized phones, I thought people who got a discount and had to pay $200 for a phone, for example, had to pay that money upfront when they sign a new contract.

      So this does not seem much different to me.  Lower-priced plans seems a far better value than paying higher plan prices, to get a $300 discount on a phone.

      That’s my take on it.  I don’t see this as T-Mobile “looting the American people.”

      Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who is really mad at T-Mobile, for its incompetence.  And I have a Metro PCS 4G phone and account to see if I might cancel my T-Mobile lines at the end of July.  So I’m no T-Mobile fan.  ;)

    They wanted to buy their phone full price AND get the discount on the plan AND have NO contract.

    Now,

    Customers will STILL buy their phone full price STILL get the discount on the plan BUT NOW there’s a CONTRACT.

      I’m on EM+ and have been paying full price for phones since EM+ came about.

      Correct me if I’m wrong, but people still have the option of buying a phone elsewhere and not paying “full price” via T-Mobile.  Last year I bought my GF a MyTouch Slide for $300 on eBay instead of paying $420 via T-Mobile.

      And two months ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy S 4G for $200 on eBay. (And a $200 Vibrant on Craig’s List, for my sister to use.)

      But EM+, yeah, that plan is being buried.  T-Mobile will discontinue EM+, even for existing customers.

        Well i doubt they will discontinue it because its grandfathered. Only way youll lose it is if you change your plan. I was one of the lucky ones to get the EM+ for 59.99 unlimited everything. Ill keep that FOREVER now.

    My question is why use these plans when you can go prepaid and get more?  They want to sell you the talk and text for $40 when you could get a similar plan on prepaid for $30.  On prepaid you can get unlimited talk for $50 which may even be less than you’d pay after you pay your taxes and surcharges.

      T-Mobile does not have unlimited plans.  All plans, depending on your data limit, get throttled after you exceed your limit.

      It’s all over the Net that T-Mobile still calling its plans “unlimited” is bogus, lame and some say fraudulent.  Even the WSJ said that a throttled connection renders the browser useless and the phone can be used for only rudimentary tasks such as checking e-mail.

    This is all BS by these carriers. They are charging for how much data you transfer across their network, which is very expensive when you look at the cost per gigabyte of storage being offered by Amazon, which is 10c per Gb. We are not even paying for bandwidth (10, 54, 100 Mbps), we are paying for a bandwidth of between 1-5 Mbps and the amount of data transferred over their network……..looking at the plan, it is going to cost approx. $10 for 1.5 Gb transferred. And what is worse, their is no guaranteed throughput rate (1.5 Mbps, 4 Mbps, etc). I would rather do what my home internet provider does and pay for a connection speed ( 20 Mbps for $30 per month) with unlimited transfer.

      home internet is not the same…land based internet service has a finite number of users per sector where as mobile phone traffice will increase up the the capcity of the tower thus slowing the service for everyone. The reason that there are caps is to prevent poeple from using huge amounts of data all day long and cloggingg up the network….it there was unlimited useage at high speeds then people would abuse it.  This is an apples and oranges comparison.

        Using data…how quaint, but inaccurate.  What you are using is bandwidth.  If you attempt pull more data during the day then you could cause congestion and the quality of service would drop for all those who are using the same tower that you are using.  However, if you’re pulling data later at night since no one is around you are not causing congestion.  During one of these times of the day that bandwidth is more important than the other.  It has nothing to do with your total usage of data, but the time of that usage.  This is what causes quality of service issues.

        In addition, statistically speaking every cell tower has a average number of users that is fairly fixed, it does not vary from the standard deviation much.  When it does then that indicates something truly out of ordinary and then bandwidth is taxed and may need to be addressed.  Conversely since more users share that tower, that tower also now becomes more profitable because it is servicing more users than the lower usage towers. 

        We need to pay for bandwidth or megabits/second, not total gigabytes.  That way we as consumers can see the true cost, because that is how it’s basically charged to businesses.  They pay for fixed bandwidth.

    If you’re one of those new-phone-every-year people (like myself), value is far from a value. Assuming the same full upgrades are available at 12 months for classic, it’s a much better deal overall.

      there’s a buyers remorse for the phones not for the credit applied to your acct to offset the cost so you’d be contracted either way,tmobile and retention is all about a contracted offer that’s why they’re pushing credits there’s no remorse period, you’re locked in during that call

        Buyer’s remorse applies to both the plan and the phone, which constitute “the contract.”

        In California it’s 30 days, elsewhere 20 days.

        One has to pay for the part of the service used during the remorse period, but people are NOT bound to the plan if they want to “return the phone.”

        If it was as you say, buyer’s remorse would be useless if carriers could force people to stay on the contract and simply be allowed to return the phone. 

        But, yes, if he got a credit to the account, say $150 to be applied to that month’s bill, he has to return that money.  Getting the $150 does not bind him to a 24 month contract.  That would be stupid anyway. Who is going to commit to a $2400 contract, for example, in return for a $150 credit to the account.

          You really love blaming the reps for everything… did you ever stop to think that it goes way beyond the reps themselves?

          The reps are just puppets dancing on management’s strings. Reps are regularly given conflicting information, conflicting expectations, constantly changing policies and expectations, systems and tools that don’t work, dubious record-keeping, and constant browbeating and threats… 

          The atmosphere at T-mobile is one of constant pressure, stress, frustration and fear…

          So if you feel the need to point the finger of blame, try pointing it a bit higher up… The reps are just trying to do what they’re told and survive, while Management seems to be doing every they can to see that the reps will fail to do so…

        In an intentionally convoluted way you are telling people that buyer’s remorse applies only to phones, not the service.  That’s a lie, saying “so you would be contracted either way.” 

        And you are also misrepresenting when saying “there’s no remorse period.”

        Finally, saying that the reason Retentions is giving (billing) money credits is to lock in people to contracts (because you misrepresent that buyers remorse applies only to phones), well… thanks for disclosing why T-Mobile Retentions is acting fraudulently.

        I gotta wonder how many consumers have tried to exercise their buyers remorse rights only to have CSRs or Retentions tell them they can’t (because T-Mobile employees have been trained to say that BR applies only to phones).

    I pay 59.99 for unlimited everything EM+ right now so i dont really see anything different for myself, so ill stick with what i have and stay off contract. Dont i get installments on new phones if i want them? I never tried but plan on it.

I know all about suggestive selling but I just want my question answered. If I went over my minutes then I could see reps suggesting that I switch plans but I never go over on minutes. And the features on my account, such as free myFaves and free wi-fi calling, are not available anymore so where is the value?

    I have heard from a few reps that even retentions is getting heat to not offer as many save offers to customers on grandfathered plans to convert those of us on Legacy plans to newer offerings. I hope this is not a sign of T-Mobile forcing customers onto newer offerings if what we have now is good for us. T-Mobile may one day tell all of us grandfathered customers to choose a current plan or go elsewhere. So far, T-Mobile has been generous enough to allow us to keep our grandfathered plans/features but lately I feel as if T-Mo wants us off these older plans that have many preferred features and onto newer plans with hardly any preferred features. Just a thought.

      Customer care reps have no choice… They are forced to make an offer on EVERY call. If you remove a feature or lower the cost of the features you already have, the rep who has to do it is in hot water.

      Used to be that when you called customer care, the priority for the rep was to do what was right for you, even if it meant lowering your rate plan or features… basically to put you on the plan and features that would give you what you need at the best price possible…

      Not anymore… Reps are now expected, with NO EXCEPTION, to try to sell you something on EVERY SINGLE CALL… and try to talk you out of lowering your monthly features, even though T-mobile keeps putting out plans/features designed to lower your bill. Reps are caught in an unwinnable situation…

      Customer care is getting most of tech-care’s calls routed to them, so they have to troubleshoot your phone, even high-end data devices, resolve any billing issues, set up payment arrangements, change your plans and services, and try to sell you something in around 350 seconds…

      So if it ever feels like you are not getting the level of customer service that you used to get, it’s simply because the reps have T-mobile’s foot on the back of their necks, with a gun pointed at their heads…

        You can tell that things are changing at T-Mobile. I hope when DT sells off T-Mobile to whoever that all of the great reps keep their jobs. Most all of the reps that I have spoken with are great. I have just recently noticed that T-Mo has been pushing features onto customers. I have a family plan with 5 lines and pay $145 after taxes for 1000 mins, unlimited family text, unlimited myFaves on all lines, unlimited Wi-Fi calling on all lines, unlimited smartphone web on two lines, and unlimited basic web on three lines. There is no way that these newer offerings will help save me money with my current features. That is why most reps say that I have an older plan and may be able to save some green if I give up a few hundred minutes and want throttled unlimited web after 200MB. Maybe the reps are right that I could save some money with a newer plan but I am pretty certain that my current plan saves me money over any current plan.

          If you want to simplify your call, as soon as the rep asks “How may I help you?” .. just say “First of all I do not give you permission to make me an offer.” … If you say that, then the rep can not make a sales attempt… they can only offer you something if it directly fixes an existing problem, like if you have texting overage, they can still make you aware of it and offer to add a texting feature… other than that, you won’t have to worry about any other offers for shit that you don’t want.

U also forgot another thing texas well atleast Austin is full of hillbillies and rednecks with a southern accent. I suppose that will always be an ignorant stereotype. Texas is like any other state. If you want to see cattle and livestock then go to the country. If you want to see how the cities are here, then come to Houston.

    Okay, one question I don’t see answered….

    I’m currently on the EM+ 500 minute plan. I would obviously save money on the Value plan, but… that contract! If I were to upgrade without a contract BEFORE the switch to get a new phone (if I could agree on G2X or Sensation), would I then be able to switch to the new plans after the new plans go into effect and not have to sign a contract (for nothing)? I just don’t wanna be LOCKED in for 2 years if the AT&T deal goes through, which it is certain to do. I want to be able to sell my phone and jump ship to Sprint w/o worrying about ETF.

    Of course… that’s why they’re doing this, isn’t it? To lock as many people in to prevent churn when AT&T takes the reigns….

      They mind as well eliminate their “classic” plan and just keep value since it’s the same shiet… with classic… u still remain paying for the plan even when out of contract, oppose to the value plan where once your phone payments is done… that’s when the savings starts.
