T-Mobile just notched a genuine wireless industry first, and it’s the kind of behind-the-scenes network milestone that could quietly make a real difference for anyone traveling internationally.

As announced by T-Mobile, T-Mobile and Indian carrier Jio achieved the world’s first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection, made possible through interoperability enabled by Syniverse’s global mediation platform. 

Unlike standard 5G roaming, which often falls back on older 4G infrastructure behind the scenes, 5G SA roaming keeps the full next-generation network experience intact across borders, meaning faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connections for T-Mobile customers traveling between the US and Jio’s network in India. 

“Leave one country, land in another, and your 5G experience is just as seamless, whether you’re streaming, sharing travel reels or running business apps,” said Ankur Kapoor, T-Mobile’s Chief Network Officer, in the announcement.

T-Mobile says this milestone traces back to groundwork it started laying for a 5G Standalone future back in 2020, and frames the Jio partnership as proof that the technology is now commercially viable rather than just a lab demo. 

Jio’s Mark Yarkosky, Head of International Network, Partnership and Services, called it a foundation for future cross-network capabilities beyond just roaming, hinting at differentiated consumer and enterprise services down the line that could take advantage of 5G Standalone’s lower latency and AI-enabled features. No word yet on when other international partners might get the same 5G SA roaming treatment, but landing the “world’s first” title with a carrier as large as Jio is a solid proof point for T-Mobile’s network bragging rights.
