T-Mobile Galaxy Note 5 expected to begin getting Android 7.0 update early next week

Galaxy Note 5 owners on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon all began receiving their Android 7.0 updates earlier this month, so T-Mo Note 5 owners are probably wondering where their Nougat update is. Now we know that it’s not far off.

T-Mobile gadget guy Des, also known as @AskDes, today confirmed that T-Mo engineers approved the Galaxy Note 5’s Android 7.0 update today. The update should begin hitting devices early next week.

The update to Android 7.0 brings with it several new features and improvements, like battery improvements with Doze and quick replies in your notifications. It’ll also be nice for Note 5 owners to be on Nougat, which is the latest major release of Android.

Get excited, Note 5 owners, because your wait for Android 7.0 is very nearly over.

Embarrassing to barely just release this update. Samsung needs to step up their game and remove bloatware for quicker updates.

    • Mike

Samsung isn’t the only company responsible for bloatware. T-Mobile, Google, and other carriers are involved as well.

  • Marcelo Lopez

This isn’t Samsung’s doing alone. Tmo needs to step up and take responsibility for not releasing updated in a timely manner. There’s no reason why instead of 7.0 based Nougat, it couldn’t be releasing 7.1 based Nougat. There, I said it.

Will the Note 4 ever see it?? Still have a Note 4 that I seldom use. Be nice to get Android 7.0.

    • Mike

Note 4 probably won’t anytime soon if at all. This is how cell phone makers get u to upgrade if u want the newest OS. Heck even older iPhones are having issues with iOS 10 and above since iPhones before the 6 ran on 32 bit systems they’re becoming obsolete.

      • Prode

5s was 64bit and my wifes worka great it was before the 5s

  • Roy_G2

@vinnyjr.. Samsung say only Galaxy S7, S7 plus, S6, S6 Edge, S6 plus and Note 5… No Note 4.. Sorry..

This is why the Note 4 was the first and last Samsung phone for me.

Android 7.0 was released in August 2016, and new phones started shipping with it in September 2016, yet it’s taken 8 months for the OTA to finally make it to the Note 5.

The 6.0 OTA for the Note 4 was even worse (11 months from Google to OTA) and didn’t show up until a month before the new 7.0 phones came out.

    • T Redd

      what are you using now?

      • Aaron Davis

        LG v20

        • T Redd

has it been updated to 7.1?

        • Aaron Davis

That is a really good question, it’s still on 7.0.
I did some quick searching and it looks like no phones except the pixel/nexus and the oneplus 3 have it so far.

LG is supposedly waiting for 7.1.2 to do an OTA

        • thepanttherlady

My ZTE Axon 7 has 7.1.1.

        • Mike

Only certain phones will see 7.1 mostly phones that had issues with 7.0

    • Jason Caprio

The Note 5 was the last Samsung for me after having to wait until late April 2016 for Android 6.0, originally release in October 2015. I’m very happy now with my Google Pixel XL which came out of the box with 7.1 in late October 2016, and a few weeks ago got the 7.1.2 update.

From here on out it’s only pure Android for me. It’s nice not having carrier/OEM bloatware and having the the latest Android update!

      • Acdc1a

They should have called it the Bezel…

        • Jason Caprio

Honestly that is my one single complain about my Pixel XL. Besides that, I love the phone. It’s good qualities greatly outweigh the bad. I’ll be keeping this for at least 2 years, and hopefully the Pixel 3 will have a a better screen to body ratio. :-)

        • Acdc1a

It’s why I haven’t given up my Nexus 6…though I think 7 is the last upgrade I’ll see. The 6p wasn’t a worthy upgrade and the Pixel XL looks like a rejected iPhone 6s Plus.

    • HeatFan786

Comes down to what you prioritize, really. If you want software updates and features, you can go with the HTC One series. If you want just timely software updates and a no frill approach, there is the Pixel line or iPhone if you’re not tied into Android.

With JoD, I am more OS agnostic since I can just jump to a Note 8 or iPhone 2017 model later this year.

I am not condoning Samsung’s lack of updates, but for the trade off, I get a lot of cool features. So far, I am content with my S8.

  • Roy_G2

Argghh! Can’t waiting… Can’t wait for my Note 5! I command your to release now!!!

  • Philip

I think I didnt like about the A7 is that the notification screen is too clutter. No one line. It got sub heading which makes it more clutter.

  • Roy_G2

    Now OTA downloading! Yes!

  • Nicolas Lalaurette

Downloading OTA update right now, 1488.26MB…

  • Nicolas Lalaurette

So, after the OTA my screen resolution dropped to 1080p? I didn’t even realized until I started checking what was new in the settings menu.

  • Dakota_Offspring

This is why I will never go back to Android. It is completely ridiculous how long it takes to get updates. No disrespect intended to android users by the way

  • Philip

I dont like the Android 7 notification indicator when you swipe down. It is hard to see if the BT or WIfi icon is on/off. It looks like ‘stick man’ type of icon. Any way to change it with icons?
