Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus offer upgraded cameras, new A10 Fusion processor

As expected, Apple today took the wraps off of the iPhone 7, its latest smartphone.

While the iPhone 7 looks similar to the iPhone 6 before it, Apple is touting several new features of the iPhone 7. That includes a new 12-megapixel camera on the iPhone 7 that offers optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture that’ll let more light onto the sensor.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 Plus packs dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, one 56mm telephoto lens and one wide-angle lens. With these two lenses, you can get 2x optical zoom, and the iPhone 7 Plus also offers a Depth Effect feature to add bokeh to your images.

The front-facing camera on both iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is of the 7-megapixel variety.

Another major change to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes, the rumors were true. Apple will include Lightning-equipped EarPods headphones with every iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but if you’ve already got 3.5mm headphones that you like, you can use the Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter that Apple will also include with each new iPhone.

Keeping up with the audio focus, Apple is throwing in stereo speakers with each iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. One speaker will be located on the bottom of the phone, while the other will be up at the earpiece above the display.

Below the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus display is a new pressure-sensitive Home button. This non-moving Home button is customizable for different things like Quick Actions, notifications, messages, and more.

Apple also highlighted the upgraded displays of both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. While they’re the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus — 4.7-inch 1334×750 and 5.5-inch 1920×1080, respectively — both displays now offer a wide color gamut and are 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus screen.

Rounding out the new features of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are new quad-core Apple A10 Fusion chips with two high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, improved graphics performance, better battery life (on average two hours better from 6s to 7 and one hour better from 6s Plus to 7 Plus), and LTE Advanced that offers speeds up to 450Mbps.

For all the nitty gritty spec details, you can hit up Apple’s iPhone 7 spec page here.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available for pre-order starting Sept. 9 and will launch on Sept. 16. T-Mobile will carry both models, and there’s already a pre-registration page on T-Mo’s site.

Here’s what the pricing for the new iPhones looks like:

  • iPhone 7: 32GB for $649, 128GB for $749, 256GB for $849
  • iPhone 7 Plus: 32GB for $769, 128GB for $869, 256GB for $969

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in high-gloss Jet Black, matte Black, Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold color options. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if you want a Jet Black phone, you’ll need to spring for a 128GB or 256GB iPhone.

Apple today also announced AirPods, its new wireless earbuds that have a microphone, double-tap for Siri, and the Apple W1 chip, which uses accelerometers to know when the AirPods are in your ears and can play and pause music when you remove or insert the earbuds. The AirPods offer up to five hours of listening on a single charge and come with a charging case that can recharge them while you’re on the go.

AirPods will cost $159 and launch in late October.
