Watch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Rock The T-Mobile G1

This is so awesome I’m not even sure I should write about this or just let you watch the video. We all know using Jelly Bean on the T-Mobile G1 as a daily driver is impractical and we were already impressed when developers were able to squeeze Ice Cream Sandwich onto the original Android device, the T-Mobile G1. Now mind = blown as developers have ported Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to the oldest consumer Android device on the planet.

Still, expectations should be mild as pretty much nothing works the way it is supposed to, this is more of a “I knew we could do it” kind of deal. That doesn’t make this any less awesome and I’d absolutely recommend taking 90 seconds out of your day to watch the video.

i still use my g1 from time to time and it runs pandora/slacker just fine on 2.1, and not to mention the signal still beats all of the newer android phones i have.

Impressive especially for such an outdated device. Keep it up boys!

That’s just sad that this can be done and yet phones that came out 2 months ago still can’t get the SECOND-LATEST OS…

I hope that I don’t invite too much wrath here, because I’m genuinely curious.  Why is this important?  I consider myself a phone enthusiast, not a techie.  However, when I think of the possibilities of running Jellybean (which is awesome) on a Behold II (which is not awesome), I don’t get excited at all.  I used the Behold II as an example because I’m not personally familiar with the G1.

This seems like a gamer getting excited that someone figured out how to play World of Warcraft on an Atari.

It’s the very first android phone.

    • kresk

Like he said, the very first android phone.

    • JBrowne1012

Behold 2 getting any form of 2.x or above would be beyond amazing.

For those complaining that their phone can’t even get ICS, keep in mind that this isn’t an official version of JB.  It’s CyanogenMod (who just may very well have a ported version available for your phone).

Important?  No. Amazing considering the vastly outdated design (528MHz processor, 192mb RAB, 256mb internal storage)?  Hell yes! Clearly this was done as a challenge to see if it could, indeed, be done.

Just sit back and enjoy the fact that Android is so hackable and that the community loves playing around with it.

  • dennis thomas

thats amazing! goes to show you what the android dev. community can do…right on!

  • loueradun

It looks a little smoother than the ICS test build, but anyone still using a G1 as a daily driver should really be thinking about what phone they should upgrade to next.

    • Herb

I got rid of mine less than a year ago when I got a GNex.

      • loueradun

I still have 2 of them, one has jcarrz ICS alpha 2 and the other is still running gingerbread. They make great backup phones.

    • JBrowne1012

Anyone who still uses a G1 as a daily driver should receive a gift card with $500 from google for their loyalty to the OG Android that started it all. Or a chance at owning a special edition google nexus.

  • ohhh, I miss my G1.  Loved that phone.

  • lol nice music

  • Trevnerdio

    That’s beyond awesome.

  • Goes to prove that all phone are full of it when we cant get ics on our phones when most of our phones
have 3 to 4 times the power of the g1

  • MuthaFuckinStephen

I don’t know what’s cooler. The music or the G1 barely running Jelly Bean.

  • Paul Birkbeck

love this song. and pretty awesome seeing jb on the g1

  • Android

Even though my G2x can’t seem to have proper ics, *cough* Nvidia *cough*. It’s awesome that the G1 was able to get it to run!

Annoying jingle. *The Pppppowwwwer of Android*

  • jbhotnessmon

and to think the supposed stock g2x can’t even go past gingerbread
