Motorola Defy Goes For A Swim, Lives To Tell About It

The Motorola Defy has been billed as an “ultra rugged” design, making it quite the rough and tough Android device.  Well, sometimes carriers like to make phones out to be a little tougher than they actually are in real world conditions so Vincent from Android Community wanted to find out just how tough the Defy was.  What does Vincent do to test the rugged nature of the phone?  Hhe throws it into a pool, of course!  Even better?  He got it all on video so watch and see what happens!

After owning a Cliq xt and being abandoned by Moto I would never purchase another phone from them but this is still pretty impressive.

    • I gave my cliq xt up for the optimus t…and have no regrets whatsoever

        REALLY? ::sarcastically::: REALLLLLLLYYYYYY!!!! WOW. O.O

Nope. The liquid indicators are covered by the water resistant back plate. This is listed as one of the phones features and its still very much covered after this. If you haven’t seen this phone then go take a looks at it in a store, even the ports all have covers.

  • kai

Impressive. Let me see if my iphone can do that.

I find myself in a life struggle, get the Defy or get the Mytouch 4G….. I don’t know what to do. I have worked at Tmobile for 9 years and have had almost every phone including the cliq, cliq xt, and Charm and not to mention the mytouch 3g so i have had features but now with a one year old that always seems to get ahold of my phone… Duribiltiy overrides Speed and Features at this point cause i don’t see any video of the Mytouch 4g going for a swim lol

    • 2006mr

Toby, I too work for Tmo…but I think you answered your question. :)

    • JaylanPHNX

The MyTouch4G is solidly the better phone, but if durability and water resistance really are very important to you, then get the DEFY. It’s not like it sucks, it’s just not (and isn’t meant to be) a superphone.

  • PimpStrong

I think I’ll try this with my TP2. Its all but dead anyway.

  • TechieChicky

that’s impressive. Would love to hear some follow up on if it’s still working well 2 or 3 days from now.

  • eYe

Hey now, my g1 went for a swim last year. Did not work for 2 days but was just fine after that! Still pretty impressive :)

  • syks

    im sold

Don’t try this with other phones, its actually advertised and listed as one of its features.

not only can you read, you can copy and paste stuff too…… great ….great…..

  • TmoRep

As a tmo tech rep I can tell you that the phone still has a normal manufacturers warranty. This means that if the visible liquid damage indicators turn red OR the ones that are inside the phone are tripped, you still voided your warranty. It is “water-resistant” NOT “waterproof.” So, you can’t freely just throw the phone in water and call in for an exchange when it stops working, it’s just a safety net in case something happens. Run-flat tires don’t mean you can blast them with a shotgun and expect them to just keep on going strong…

    • Cat Isidor

Well it seems that Tmo is under selling it’s waterproofness, I’d like to see someone drop one of those suckers. ;)

  • mikeeeee

hey guys bought mine wednesday morning.

    i love it.

took a 10 hour road trip in an 18 wheeler with it last night used every road warrior feature on it works with flying colors.

just got back home and put it back on wifi calling.

wifi calling app works better than native UMA devices because it’s a hard toggle on/off instead of a signal seeker.

battery life is great as well.

3 words that sum up the phone are……..

    ‘swiss army knife’.

  • LongtimeTmoUser

Was in a Tmo store the other day to view the Defy, MT4G, OptT.
I wish I had an audio or video recorder when the Tmo Store rep said in a confident manner, “the Defy can handle up to 200 feet deep of water.”
    I just said, “oh really”…

It’s one thing to not know the correct answer, and its one thing to not know the correct answer and not have the ability to come up with an answer that might even be close to the actual answer based on using a basic waterproof digital camera max depth. But then again, I knew from specs that the phone is water-resistant (not water-proof), so stating “200 feet”…

I also commented about the MT4G having *only* an “E”(Edge) on the top of the screen. This is in the center of Los Angeles… The Tmo Store rep replied, that “Tmo 4G system might be overworked at this time.” Ummm more like, someone needs to tell Tmo to improve the signal near Tmo Stores if you are trying to sell a product with faster net.

    • JaylanPHNX

I was at a T-Mo store in Jax, Fl and had the same thing; edge speed in the store. It’s gotta suck to have to sell phones, especially 4G phones, when signal blows in your store location. The kiosk at the mall where I get my phones (and my previews) has great signal.

    • Pissed

The correct answer would be 3 meters for 3 minutes.

  • brett

this is a very tempting phone, but im a keyboard man :D
maybe ill get this and have my cliq for back up
yes a cliq with 2.1. NO its not a bad phone!

  • Patrick

Finally, a phone that even I can’t mess up!

  • Gacktvic
