T-Mo Galaxy S5 firmware update available

This morning, T-Mobile and Samsung rolled out an OTA update for the Galaxy S5. It’s not a major software update by any means, but it is a firmware update designed to boost performance and reliability. It’s still Android 4.4.2, but with baseband version G900TUVU1BNG4. Update details simply states “Improved performance” for the 87MB download. Pretty vague, and certainly a minor improvement. T-Mobile’s support page states simply that there are updates to “Audio and software stability”.

If you have a Galaxy S5 on T-Mobile and you haven’t yet received a notification for the update, check your settings for software updates and download manually, or try through the Samsung Kies PC software. You should find and install it without any issues.

As always, let us know how you get on. If you spot any noticeable performance improvements, or if it affects your phone negatively, give us a shout using the comments below or catch me on Twitter: @PhoneDog_Cam.

Thanks for the tip, Mike.

I’ll get it installed tonight on my Wifes phone and see how it goes. WHat I am really waiting for is my Note 2’s 4.4.x update. Any news on that would be great.

    • CHRIS

Your gonna install it on your wife’s phone, so if it screws something up your in the clear, right? Nice!

      • Nathan S.

lol, actually its more likely the opposite! If somethings wrong with it, she’ll let me know quick. She had an S2 that started dieing finally so I upgraded her when the S5 came out. That S2 ran pretty good though for a good long time and if it had any troubles, I was fixing it. I am stuck with my Note 2 till I get the S5 payed off. Then is Note 4 time for me. While I wait though, would be nice to have some 4.4 love on my Note 2 without having to go to a custom rom on it.

        • CHRIS

You have a lot of patience I have to give it to you most would have already flashed a custom rom by now. But like you said you’re heading for Note 4 so I guess it doesn’t really matter. I have an S5 which I am happy with but I have a feeling Samsung is gonna make me wish that I waited for the Note 4.

        • Nathan S.

Yeah, and strangely, the Note 2 has been really solid for me and has given me no troubles, reboots or annoying bugs that I have found. This is mostly the reason I have left it stock. Its just solid and performs pretty darn well as is.

    • Nathan S.

So far so good, no complaints from the Wifey about her phone. :)

  • cooliebwy

I guess I might as well give up on my galaxy s3 receiving Kit-Kat

It’s not up to t mobile for android updates.

      http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/08/the-state-of-android-updates-whos-fast-whos-slow-and-why/

Blame samsung and their 3 dozen phones for the slow updates.

    • anon

      Wow, they removed my comment.

Android OS updates such as Kit Kat are the responsibility of the OEM. So blame your manufacturer for the slow updates.

Ars had a nice article on the subject a month or two ago. I suggest reading it.

Samsung has over a dozen models in current production, representing more of their revenue, than the s3.

Unless it’s a major security update, i wouldn’t expect phones that “out dated” (haha) to get updates.

  • bdbman

Just got it a few min ago. It seems a bit smoother.

  • john

Haven’t done it yet. I’m afraid it’ll mess something up!!!!

    • Trish

Don’t my friend! It messed mine up big time!

  • AndTheWorldMayNeverKnow

Hopefully this fixes the missing text message issues I’ve been having. Checked the forums and there have been a lot of people with the same issues. Having to remove the Sim card or reset the phone constantly was getting annoying.

  • anon

Just got it. It reset my power saving settings for some reason, no bother, that’s easy to fix. Haven’t noticed much else.

Phone seems a bit smoother, hopefully this helps with my voice dropping out of calls.

    • Orlando Freytes

Make sure when you’re on a call, that you don’t cover the mic on the bottom of the phone with your pinky. I used to do this all the time and people would lose my voice completely lol.

      • anon

No it completely drops. I have to end the call. It’s really frustrating. I can hear them, but my voice is just gone.

  • Randall Lind

I got a update yesterday and today not sure why I got two updates. After yesterday update my phone dropped a call last night. I never had that happen before.

  • MarcusDW

Tmobiles next “Uncarrier” move should be software update transparency, because it is taking entirely too long for the Note 2 to get KK.

This is very “Carrier”, regardless of reason for the delay.

    • JamesG

Just put a ROM on yourself, its a very developer friendly phone

      • RLB63

Yeah then you void your warranty.

        • Evan Lam

Considering its a Note 2, the warranty is probably over by now anyways since its only for a year.

        • RLB63

Actually with TMo you can pay to have the warranty extended even if you don’t buy the insurance. I hate being in a 2 year contract(even without contracts you are locked in for 2 years with a new phone) and having the warranty expire after year 1.

      • MarcusDW

I vowed not to Root this thing and have succeeded for nearly 2 years now. Ill wait it out cuz im getting the N4 anyway.

    • anon

Updates like this are definitely t mobile, and they could be more transparent about it.

But it’s not t mobile holding up KK on your note 2. Blame samsung and their 3 dozen models of phones for slow android updates.

      • MarcusDW

Thing is, Sprint, Verizon, and ATT got 5he update months ago.

  • Louie

Just got the update here in NW Chicago. Haven’t noticed any differences.

  • Erk3452

This update seems to have fixed an issue I had with the Sound Alive equalizer no working in Spotify periodically. Now the equalizer kicks in 100% of the time.

  • Lboogey6

after installing it i’ve noticed its a little peppier. i had a threaded message that was so long that it would slow everythging down while sending or receiving the message to and from that person and it wouldn’t let me delete the whole thread would just shut down but now its working

  • ssjchaseutley

Great now where is the update for the SG4? 4.4.2 has utterly ruined my phone.

    • RLB63

I updated s4 and all apps on as card disappeared. Can’t reinstall from android app store either.was able to figure out a few of them and was able back up those apps on another device and reinstalled them that way. I know s bunch of other apps missing just haven’t figured out what they are yet. Most are probably from Google play store.

    • skittle

I have the SG4 with 4.4.2 and it seems okay. What exactly do you mean by “utterly ruined” ?

      • ssjchaseutley

My battery life drains constantly as a result of the update. There is a large thread about this over the Tmobile forums. It is considered unresolved due to some underlying process in relation to the camera, constantly diverting resources, thus resulting in severely dimished battery life. Ive not had one issue until that update…since then right now actually, I phone drops 1% every 3 minutes.

        • skittle

1% is definately every three minutes is not cool. Now that I think of it my phone does seem to be losing charge quicker than before the update. Thanks for the heads up :) My daughter won’t update her S4 to the new software saying she didnt trust it! She is smarter than me ;)

        • ssjchaseutley

She’s smarter than me that’s for sure.

      • ssjchaseutley

Apologize for the grammatical errors. I have to find a wall -_-

  • Sang

Just got the update and my S5 feels faster and smoother already.

  • Trish

My phone is overheating without me using it or without any apps running in the background. The update has ruined my phone in every way!

  • Bee

My phone is getting hot and the battery is draining so fast. I used to go almost 2 days without charging and now I am charging it twice a day! Lame…can I uninstall?

    • Eddie G

My phone is not getting hot but it is draining my battery really fast after the update. Looked for what is using up my battery and Android system was at 67%. Thinking of doing a master reset. Any suggestions?

      • itsme

When upgrading baseband, the phone will take a couple full charges to normal out the battery drain.

        • Eddie G

Thanks, appreciate the quick response. I’ll give it a couple of days then, to let things settle down.

  • KreDiTZ

The new update got my s5 freezing and it also wont read my SD card now… also it removed some of my apps. Just mad that it seems I’m having software issues now when it was running fine to me yesterday.

  • jeremy vega

still waiting for my Galaxy Note 2 to get updated to kitkat

    • CHRIS

They are probably not going to update the note 2

  • gabybaby

Definitely there is a problem with the battery drain. There are 3 S5’s in my house and all 3 are having significant faster battery drain then previously to prior update. I wish someone would elaborate on exactly what was enhanced.

    • mak14

exactly the same issue i m facing with my S5 after update since yesterday.

  • gabybaby

Gotta feeling someone forgot to include other parts of the bug fixes like att/Verizon did. All of their upgrades included , battery, email, Knox security enhancements.etc. never had any problems until now..bummer…..

  • claffeeba

Camera not working well after uodate. Significant freezing and battery overheating.

  • Herbert Portillo

This update changes the boot screen. The old Android logo in the “Powered by Android” is replaced with the new Android logo.

  • Steve

Native email still ‘crashes’ with a 15 second black screen. Very annoying. I have two gmail accounts with it and have removed and readded them.

  • chris casillas

    battery drain why?

  • skittle

Maybe the update caused the “meter” to read wrong. Like a guage that needs to be recalibrated. Seems like how the battery is read by the software and shown as a readout is a last consideration when they roll out these updates.

Is it possible that the faster battery drain after the update is maybe some features that were deselected or selected prior to the update that are now reset and need to be set again?

    • skittle

After doing more reading I see there are worse problems that battery drain…….I was looking to JUMP to the S5…..

Why does the tmo s4 gets the 4.4.4 update but tmo s5 just have the 4.4.2. .?
