Official Ice Cream Sandwich Update ROM For HTC Ruby/Amaze 4G Hits XDA

While we’re still waiting for T-Mobile and HTC to announce the official releases of both the HTC Sensation 4G and Amaze 4G Ice Cream Sandwich updates — but if you’re comfortable doing a little hacking and tweaking on your Android device, XDA has you covered. The “official ICS update for Ruby,” the Amaze 4G codename is now available from XDA-Developers.com.

It looks like the download has come to a crawl, but if you don’t want to wait for T-Mobile and HTC to release the “official, official” update, you can get started with the “unofficial, official” version right away. Quick reminder, the HTC Amaze 4G update adds Sense 3.6 and not Sense 4.0, just so there is no confusion post update. No word on any potential issues or non-work features. Install at your own risk as always.

Happy downloading!

:-O I gotta check it out now.  Thanks for posting, David!

  • Deadeye37

No official Ice Cream Sandwich update for my G2?  No word?  My G2′s feelings are hurt because it’s maker doesn’t care about him anymore :(

I’ll just have to get something unofficial…

    • Vim

Newest devices get official OS updates first. That’s the way it’s always been.  Knowing HTC, the G2 will probably get an update too, but it’s likely to be a very long wait.

      • Deadeye37

The funny thing is that the Desire-S is on HTC’s list, but not the Desire-Z, which makes me think that the G2 is going to get skipped over.

        • Vim

It’s probably dependent on how quickly they can get the newer devices updated.  They won’t put it on the list until they can free up some developers to work on it. Only then will they commit to it. In the case of the MyTouch 3G it took them so long to get around to it that they skipped 2.1 and went straight from 1.6 to 2.2.

  • Vim

Fun! Fun! Fun!  Time to hop on over to XDA…

    • Vim

Damn! We have S-Off too now.  The past few days have been great for the Amaze.

  • Jmart922

    Whooo hooo!

  • Jaygqitalia

My phone is normal and not rooted. How would I even get this on my phone when its downloaded?

    • fixxmyhead

u cant u need s-off. why do u even care anyways u dont even know what to do with it. ur phone isnt even rooted

      • randomnerd_number38

Actually, this is a leaked official update. You don’t need S-OFF OR root to flash it.

Be charged to 75% or more before doing this. Also backup your stuff. Things can go wrong during an update.

        1) Rename download to PH85IMG.zip
        2) Put that file on your SD card in the phone
        3) Unplug usb cable, remove battery
        4) Put battery back in
        5) Press and hold Volume Down and Power
        6) Apply update. Will take some time.
        7) Enjoy Sense 3.6 and Android 4.0.3

Question is, is this just a field test version that hasn’t been approved? Or is it an official update just being held back from release because of the One S?

        • fixxmyhead

This is why I hate HTC phones. I have an s2 so I don’t have to worry about this stupid s-off bootloader crap.Samsung phones much much easier and NO locked boot loader. Yea same steps I had to do for my girls mytouch 4g when I tried to flash a gb rom.

        • Vim

On the other hand HTC phones are far more likely to get a 2nd OS update, which even for custom ROM users means updated kernels.

        • damian9622

Where on the sd card do I move the file?

        • Magmaspawn

the main folder. no sub directories

        • damian9622

          So just “/” not “/mnt” or “/mnt/sdcard”?

        • Boro Govnar

I did my update to the new rom, without any issues, i saw the htc amaze tool on xda, tried it, and couldnt root my phone, does my bootloader and all the fun stuff need to be unlocked to get root access, what is the  best way to root the phone with the new update, if you have links please reply with them

  • JBLmobileG1

Hopefully this means the official OTA update isn’t too far off. Anyone know if this will improve the battery because honestly that is the only downfall of the Amaze now… other than that its a great phone.

    • GDHussak

I’ve had ICS on my Sensation for a while now and I can’t even begin to describe the marked difference in battery life. Can honestly say it probably doubled. Hope you experience the same with your Amaze.

  • Deadeye37

Do you have Wi-Fi calling working on some/most of the roms?  That is the main app that is making me hang back from flashing on a new rom.  Well, that and bricking my phone…

    • Magmaspawn

ims wifi calling… need a gba sim and make sure e911 address is set up. then good to go. helps if wifi broadcast channels are 1,6 or 11.

  • Dronde

Does it work with HTC sensation?

    • http://twitter.com/xOneSainTx xOneSainTx

If you have to ask you probably shouldn’t even be messing around with flashing roms.

      • Dronde

Why they have to mention sensation in the post if it doesn’t have anything to do with it?

        • http://twitter.com/xOneSainTx xOneSainTx

Do you even read the entire post or don’t you know how to comprehend things?  It says “While we’re still waiting for T-Mobile and HTC to announce the official releases of both the HTC Sensation 4G andAmaze 4G Ice Cream Sandwich updates”.  MEANING WHILE YOU WAIT for Tmobile and HTC to push official builds there is a flashable UPDATE FOR THE HTC AMAZE that was leaked.  IT says nothing that it will work for the Sensation.  Go ahead and flash it if you want but your phone will turn into a paper weight.

        • http://twitter.com/dronde Ednord D.

sure will do. All you gotta say is “No’. simple as that

        • Magmaspawn

sensation is going to get it. dont worry

    • Magmaspawn

sensation has been yested longer than amaze. yes it will.

    • TMOTECH

They have a ROM for the Sensation on the XDA site too. Every phone has differences in the software due to differences in hardware.so you cannot use the Amaze software for the sensation.

  • Tatdude806

I downloaded and installed this about 2 hours ago. (I got tired of waiting for it on the Sensation, and bought me an AMAZE) I can now say that the Amaze is even more Amazing! You can tell a major difference in how it runs. I hate to say it, they should bring it out of EOL and tell HTC to take their silly ONE S back and shove it. This is the phone I have been waiting for. WAY TO GO!

    • Jmtaa5

how did u install?  Did you use the directions by randomnerd38?

  • Nelson1345

    will this void warranty?

    • Magmaspawn

      yes it technically will.

  • Jaygqitalia

The true question is, is ICS really better then whats on here already? I actually really like sense and the way things are. I didnt like the youtube videos on how the camera app is on ICS, also didnt like the lock screen

    • Tatdude806

Yes it is that much better. You will notice a major speed increase in normal day to day activities. ICS actually uses both cores and not just one. It makes the entire experience so much better. The lock screen is no different, and there is more than one camera app out there…

      • Jaygqitalia

Is it possible to go back to the original OS if I dont like it?

        • Magmaspawn

yes but you will like. you woyld have to root so by asking that question i would say no

  • steveb944

Seriously considering doing this. My phone keeps shutting off randomly on me. Oh and it’s not the new Sense? That’s lame.

    • JBLmobileG1

Funny you should mention that because lately my phone has been restarting when I hit the home key. I wonder if it’s doing something to prepare for an update… although it would be odd because it was never this way with my past HTC Android phones.

      • TMOTECH

It is a defect in the Amazes battery. Mine does it too. Go to batteries plus and buy an aftermarket one.

  • Tcoop205

can somebody please put up a youtube video of this??

  • Jaygqitalia

Yes can someone please upload a video of how it looks on the amaze

  • Jmart922

Installed ICS earlier, granted I’m running stock, and I have to say this is way smoother than before on gingerbread, screen moves fluid websites have a nice pinch to zoom feel, I especially like the note recorder widget they added, 4.0.3 goodness, definitely made the phone much better, I haven’t had any problems except chrome browser needs work, staying with HTC browserinstead, for now, btw the screen rotation has the nice.animation to it with no lag at all, and the new voice to text works great

    • damian9622

How did you do it? No one seems to like answering that question.

      • TMOTECH

If you go to XDA there will be detailed instructions. If you follow them to a T you should be fine. XDA usually has very specific instructions and they are usually very thorough.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W5ESPV3J6QPQEX4S7XWYS553HE eddie

i need help after i hold down volume down and power, whats exactly the next step?

  • Amazed in Awe

OK! I am not sure if this question was answered anywhere in these postings. But, IF I chose to update my Amaze 4G to the new ICS, will I be able to revert back to GB?

I have downloaded the file, placed it on my SD card, renamed the file, pulled and inserted the battery, held down power button/volume down button. The file has populated and now its asking me if I want to update.

Before updating, please tell me if there are there any known issues with this particular build? I surely don’t want to brick my phone. Any advice would be awesome. Thank you!

    • apenaroks

This build is the official update that will be rolled out in a few weeks. I have been running this build for a few hours and I can honestly say my phone actually runs a bit faster and smoother!! I havent found any bugs so far.

  • Jmart922

Go and download the file, its like 480mb or something like that…once downloadedon your computer, rename the file to PH85IMG…now.place file.on the root of your sd card, meaning connect your phone to pc and simply drag and drop the file in the as card file, don’t put it in any folders just leave it the way it is, afterwards disconnectthe phone and wait for the phone to remount the sdcard (“phone is preparing sdcard”), turn.off and.take out the battery, reinsert the battery and hold volume and power button down , let go of the power button and the Hboot screen should pop up and automatically start the installation, it’ll give simple instructions and just follow them and once its done, it’ll reboot and wa la! your amaze just got a heck of a lot better

    • Realife428

Its not working for me. Can i do this s-on? Or do i have to root and s-off? Ive done all of that rooting stuff on my sensation so im not a noob. Its just not working for me, and i cant figure out why??

      • Jmart922

rename file PH85IMG without .zip, see if that works, it did for me

      • apenaroks

I did it with S-ON. There is a lot of confusion and everyone over at XDA seems to have their own way for doing this. heres what I did.
        BEFORE THE UPDATE:
My amaze was rooted, S-ON, and the bootloader unlocked.
First I relocked the bootloader with fastboot, and placed the zip file in the SD card. NOT INTERNAL STORAGE.
Then, rebooted the phone (removed and reinserted battery) into HBOOT (press and hold volume down and power)
The phone automatically loaded the zip file, took a very long time, dont worry if seems like it froze. Trust me, its not. And the phone will reboot itself twice, this is normal.
After it booted into Android, I rebooted into HBOOT, and unlocked the bootloader again, Then installed clockwork mod. Finally, installed the superuser zip file, and now my Amaze is running ICS, rooted, and a unlocked bootloader.

        EDIT:
Let me know if you need really specific instructions or help. Ill do my best to make it simple!

        • Kuzon

I did as your instruction says, it works after 10 minutes of waiting on updating the system. Awesome!

        • ForJam

After it tries to load, it says no image or incorrect image file

        • ForJam

I have a rooted phone with S-On. The phone looks at the zip file on th ext sd card but goes no further. It keeps going back to the recovery screen after maybe 20 seconds. I renamed the file as well.

        • ForJam

          I am rooted with S-On
I placed the file in the external sd card as well as the ext_sd folder on the phone. I renamed the file as well as deleted the .zip suffix. when I boot from the bootloader I get:

          SD Checking…
          Loading
          No image!
          Loading…[PH85DIG.zip]
          No image or wrong image

It goes through this then rescans quickly and returns to the HBOOT screen and then nothing.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SV4ULKDQAPIY7VPEPU3LHHV4OM Mr Tibbs

work great for me thanks alot

    • Mitch

What do you mean rename the file?

The thing I downloaded has a bunch of files. Should I put them all in a folder named PH85IMG?  Or it there one particular file I am looking for

      • Jmart922

click the xda link above, DL the file, once it finishes, go to your downloads on your computer, click the file tha you just downloaded, rename the file PH85IMG, now drag and drop the file on your phones SD card…rest of instructions is above

    • Fareside2012

ugh when I go to the Hboot screen it keeps saying “No Image Found”.

      Any suggestions? Thanks

      • Fareside2012

Fixed. Apparently I had to put to file into the ext_sd folder on my phone. After I did that, my phone started to automatically update.

  • Jmart922

Once you are finished you can use astro file to delete the 480mb file.off your sdcard, remember this will erase phone storage memory, NOT THE SD CARD MEMORY, i lost gameplay data from where’s my water and angry bird space game saves, so.don’t worry about photos being erased, if you aren’t sure and.too worried about doing this than you shouldn’t be messing with your phone, I am.not responsible for bricking your phone

  • Drock2480

its a scam. when i try to download it tells me all free slots are full. but if you pay us $12 for a monthly membership, we will let you download it right now………….scam

    • Ajimenez_01

it’s not, i downloaded it. just sign up for the free user account and then download. it’s going to be very slow though.

    • Ozzieos

just keep clicking once a spot opens it will let you get it for free.  I did it and love it no issues so far.

  • Amazed in Awe

Alright all of you Amaze owners who have already downloaded and installed this update. Are there any known issues? Is everything working right? If so, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post the correct instructions on how to update the phone properly. There are WAY too many posts on here and I cannot afford to brick my phone. I want to do this right the first time and not void the warranty on my phone.

    ————————————————–

This is what I have done so far:

I have downloaded the file, placed it on my SD card, renamed the file, pulled and inserted the battery, held down power button/volume down button. The file has populated and now its asking me if I want to update. Before updating, please tell me if there are there any known issues with this particular build? • apenaroks

I was able to update successfully and have had no issues with anything. Wifi, gsm, bluetooth, etc all seem to be in working order. Before I did this update, my phone’s bootloader was unlocked, rooted, and I had S-ON. I used fastboot to relock the bootloader, and then updated with the file that was posted on XDA. After updated, I unlocked the bootloader again, reinstalled clockworkmod recovery, and installed the superuser zip. My Amaze is now running 4.0.3 with sense 3.6, rooted, unlocked bootloader. :) hope this helps. Let me know if you want step by step instructions for how I did it.

      • Amazed in Awe

Well, I have 2 small problems. For some reason when I unplug the phone from the charger, the battery level starts dropping. It was off the charger 2 mins this morning and it dropped 3%. I am thinking I may need to let the battery run its course and completely die then place it on the charger to fully charge? Also, I cannot view my WiFi at home. I was driving to work this morning and all sorts of WiFis were popping up. What’s up with this? Is it my router? I believe its a Linksys, but I cannot remember. Any advice would be awesome! Thank you!

        • apenaroks

I have not yet had an issue with WiFi, however I do seem to be having reception issues. Today I have noticed I am getting very very poor reception in places where reception was just fine.

        • Kelly

I have terrible battery life now. If I use my phone at all it drops very rapidly, even when charging. I get a message that tells me I’m using more charge than I’m receiving. Also, My gps doesn’t work correctly anymore. That’s the one thing I use the most because I geocache…. I’m really unhappy right now.

        • Bencolemanjr

Disable the tmo contact sync and install juicedefender for better battery life.

        • Kelly

I can’t disable that one, I’ve tried, but I did tell it not to sync under accounts. I did add juice defender after that post. It has helped. It still burns battery pretty fast if I do anything at all though. I had a 15 minute call while the phone was charging (I was using a wired headset and shut the screen off) I LOST 5% battery with it plugged in and my battery was 117 degrees F when the call was over. I updated maps and also the geocaching app that I love so much and they still don’t work properly.

        • thekeelo_g

My battery life has been horrible. It dropped 70% in 45 minutes.

Is there a way to downgrade/restore? Or fix the battery issue?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W5ESPV3J6QPQEX4S7XWYS553HE eddie

would i need to be unlocked thru the htc website.for some reason its not recononizing the file

  • Jmart922

People need to go to amaze4g xda for questions, if you have a question I’m sure its been asked there and answered

  • Nelson1345

will it void my warranty if i didn’t root?

  • Jmart922

It’s an official release so no it won’t void anything, its basically the OTA update everyone else will get later

  • Kuzon

my phone is stock. I can just install the program right away by holding down both power button and volume button down, then release power button and follow the instruction. thanks guys, it works great!

    • Amazed in Awe

YES!! I had NO problems with the update! Go for it. =D

  • Kelly

updated to ICS and loving it!

  • Kobena

Ok, so either I am really slow or there is something not right here. I have tried every instruction I have found here, downloaded the file, renamed it, put it on the root of my sd card. Shut the phone and boot into the bootloader. The only options I see are HBOOT, FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORY RESET, CLEAR STORAGE, SIMLOCK, IMAGE CRC.

There is nothing about updating anything. What am I doing wrong? Do I need an additional simcard in the device for this thing to work?

    • JBLmobileG1

I am in the same boat. Is it because my bootloader is locked?

      • tmoguy15963

You have to rename the file and put it in the root of your sd card.  Remove the battery from the phone(if not it wont work).  Hold down the volume down button and hold power til the menu comes up abnd it will scan your card and automatically start updating.

        • Kobena

That is exactly what I did. I have even tried it again by taking the zip extension from the file and still nada. I will give it one more shot and see.

        • JBLmobileG1

I am not home now but will try it again tonight. I did rename the file and had it on my 32gb class 10 sd card. I wonder if maybe it wouldn’t work because I put the file in its own folder and titled it root. Any thoughts if that could be the case?

        • Vim

Yep, that would explain your problem.  Root is Linux/UNIX lingo for the top level folder, not a folder named “root”.

        • JBLmobileG1

Got it. The only issue I’ve encountered is it seems the 4g signal isn’t as strong as before. The battery life may be a little better though. So far. I like it.

        • Kobena

got it to work tmoguy, apparently I needed a new sdcard. funky old one.

      • Kobena

Apparently that isn’t supposed to be a problem.

      • Kobena

Ok JBLmobileG1 I just got it to start loading. You need an external sdcard, not the pseudo one that comes with the phone. If you have an ext sdcard and it’s still not work, try changing it. That is what I did and now it is updating. Try that and let us know

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W5ESPV3J6QPQEX4S7XWYS553HE eddie

im having the same problem as u,i tried a diffrent sd card,no luck.and the forums from xda arent any help?

    • New2droid

did you get it to work yet?

  • shadic65

    Will this erase my data

    • Musicear

From your phone….yes but totally worth it!!

I’m going to download ICS from Filefactory?? Filefactory SUCKS!!!!!

  • joseg

i’m hearing this is an old version already. is there a newer version out?
