Samsung Hercules, HTC Ruby Release Dates Unveiled

There is little doubt that the Samsung Hercules aka Galaxy S II and the HTC Ruby are two of T-Mobile’s most anticipated devices as we rev up the back-to-school season. Both devices are Android powerhouses with each promising something a little different. We’re still missing out on a whole lot of details regarding both devices but one thing we can cross off our to do list is attempting to nail down a release timeframe.

While rumors had pegged the Hercules for a late September arrival, this back-to-school leaked slideshow tells us that both the Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby will arrive on October 26th of this year. Of course this far out it’s entirely possible that date could change many times over but at the very least we’ve got the first physical evidence that shows a release date.

WIth the Samsung Galaxy S II event coming up at the end of the month we expect that T-Mobile will be on hand to show off their Hercules variant and give us the usual “coming soon” speech. Of course Galaxy S II fans have a reason to compare the beast that is the Samsung Hercules against the HTC Ruby with specs that clearly rival it. There is plenty of time to compare both devices with a release timeframe of over two months away and we’re likely to know a whole lot more about each device as the October date approaches.

Curious about the design if the Ruby. I like solid phones. The Samsung seems too plasticy

    • Oreo

IDK, the leaked pics of the Samsung Device looks to have a metal back so here’s to hoping no plastic. Then again I’m more interested in getting me some stock Ice Cream from the Big G on the next Nexus.

      • Dominic

If they’re pushing it off until October then I could see the possibility of the Hercules of getting Ice Cream.  Google’s pushing hard to get it out on phones at about the same time the Iphone 5 is coming out to put a damper on it.  Who knows.

The HTC Ruby must have something over the htc sencesation because they came out so close together. its like killing your own product. No one will get the Sensation once the ruby comes out if it runs sence. G3 mabey? Its like coming out with the Evo 3d, 4 monthes after the evo 4g. it kills the product.

I wanna say its gotta be a “G series” phone but that picture of the camera software goes against that.  The only thing that makes sense to me about this 5-months-after-the-Sensation Ruby phone is that its a stock Google phone though.

Whatever it is that sets it apart will show up soon enough though.

          http://gizmodo.com/5831143/leak-atts-confidential-4g-lte-and-t+mobile-plans

          not so fast my friend

there is this little incident of deathstar’s filing with the fcc, a portion of which got pulled by att which stated that in a nutshell, it would cost $39 billion more for att to expand 4g lte to 97% of the population with t-mobile than it would without t-mobile.

wait, isn’t $39 billion the acquisition price of t-mobile for att?  why yes.  yes it is.  withOUT t-mobile, att could do it for $3.9 billion.  in fact, att shut down its 4g rollout that they had in progress, then a few months later we hear att was buying t-mobile.

deathstar’s own documents prove that they don’t need t-mobile to do what they said they needed t-mobile for in this merger and that all deathstar is doing is buying out a competitor to shrink the market.  either that filing was a mistake, or there may have been someone in deathstar’s legal department that actually has a conscience.

        • J-Hop2o6

+1 .. And if the merger STILL goes thru,, all hell is gonna break loose.. How can this pass with the evidence right there sayin’ AT&T can do it for wayyyyyyyyyyy cheaper?

And I like how us said ” there may have been someone in deathstar’s legal department that actually has a conscience.”  — LOVE that line, but I doubt that.. but how can something that serious be mistakenly left in the document?

        • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

Wow, boy Melissa you’re as ignorant and insulting as they come.  Each day that goes by new evidence comes up to make the merger less and less likely.  I’m not online to do your research for you lazy bones but if you want just a “portion” of some evidence look before, ctkatz speaks the truth.  This deal won’t go through sounds as if Melissa is actually rooting for it too, what an unintelligent female if you ask me.  Stick to the windows honey.

        • Anonymous

The merger is going to happen. You’re dreaming if you think that the FCC, full of people who are just waiting for the revolving door between industry and government to turn once more are going to put a stop to a deal that AT&T (one of the largest corporate political donors) has invested so much into pushing through.

In a perfect world of course, the FCC and the Justice Department would have the interests of consumers in mind, but that’s not the world in which we live.

Dead on @ItsMichaelNotMike:disqus On first hand experience…let me put it this way.

I went into an ATT store and the sales person said…and I quote:

      1)  ’ATT has the fastest network’ (I’m so glad I had my G2x in my pocket) with the last set of speedtest, when he ran his…showing a paltry 4 to 5 meg on the download, I’m holding steadfast at 8-9 meg on mine
      2) ‘Nobody uses more than 2 gig’…Such lies they tell people.  I ALREADY told him I’m a T mobile customer.
      3) AT&T is the only network that can do voice and data at the same time.  My mother called, I said I was in the AT&T store.  She said she was sending me an email.  I got it, I read it, I clicked on the link and surfed to the youtube video.  Dumbass felt like a fool.

I left.  Yes, the ATT portfolio has a lot of samsung windows phones and blackberry’s…and oh yes, the iPhone.

comparatively….T mobile has really good phones…

i hate the fact that samsung keeps putting the  same touchwhiz crap on their phones.  i went from htc phones since g1 to galaxy s 4g and the UI is crap even though the phone is great.  sense 3.0 is amazing.  samsung needs to do something about this interface stat because the way sense evolved from 2.0 to 3.0 and upcoming 3.5 is just astounding and blows all other UI’s out of the water.  don’t get me wrong i love stock android but sense is awesome.  i just hope when more specs come out about the ruby, there isn’t the disappointment of 14.4 mbps data like the sensation.

    • leo

The Htc sensation has a 21 mbps data speeds!!

      • Anonymous

It can access those data speeds but top out at 14.4 because that’s how much the chip can handle, so yeah 14.4.

      • CRT24

        No it doesn’t….it is HSPA+ 14.4

        • Mel

youll reach those speeds on WIFI only ,  ive reached 25 mbps on WIFI
ive done the same test all over the city (chicago) and the max is like 12/16 IF your lucky

There has to be a day down the road when these interfaces will become downloadable as a skin or at least removable in a simple manner.  It would be one of the few ways to slow the fragmentation.  You would remove the skin entirely, update Android, and then replace the skin when they catch up.  I realize that is an oversimplified (x10) response but that has got to be where we are heading in the future.  That would be awesome and we could buy a phone based on the hardware knowing that the software with catch up.  I hate that it is a crap-shoot on whether each phone will get upgraded or not.

Oh men I just got my htc sensation last Sunday I should have waited for this huhuhu. Just wondered if I can change phone after awhile since I’m on value plan. Can I?

    • Me

on value plan you can change phone at anytime since you pay full price. however you can only have one phone on installments at a time so you would have to pay off the remaining balance for sensation. or return sensation within 30day buyers remorse and pay restock fee of $50 and wait for hercules if thats the phone you want

  • Anonymous

October 26th lmao! rather wait for the N3! Or an official Google MotoMonster.

Samsung blew it. They missed a big opportunity. They lost customers to the sensation already. They will lose some to the ruby. They will lose more to the nexus. Great job for tmobile however.

Agreed on all counts. I’ve had pretty much the same phones as you, and the Sensation definitely takes the cake. I liked the MT4G, but sold it to get the Sensation. I also made a promise to myself not to buy any more T-Mobile phones until the whole AT&T situation is sorted out. Since the Vibrant, in my opinion, was indeed a piece of garbage (others may disagree), I am not planning on buying any Samsung devices any time soon. Of course, that may change in the future. With regards to the Ruby, it doesn’t really seem like enough of an upgrade from the Sensation.

  • Anonymous

So with the HTC Ruby, what does this mean for the HTC Sensation? Seems like almost the same phone, in that it’s not *that* much of an upgrade to an already super high end phone. Not that I’m complaining, just out of character for T-Mobile to update hardware so soon.

Am I the only one kind of disappointed that the My Touch 4G Slide (which was released at the end of July) is the “featured device for the 2011 Holiday Season”?

Also, question for David or any other admin of the site, is there a reason why in the forums there is not a My Touch 4G Slide category?  I mean I don’t see this phone on eBay very much at all and don’t really hear anyone talking about it.  I get the feeling that the phone isn’t selling that well but that’s only because I don’t hear about it anywhere..

    • Anonymous

I’ve wondered about the same thing. I think T-Mobile’s customer base might be on device overload right now, a lot of new phones have come out recently and the high-end Android market seems to be a crowded space.

But, I could be totally off base about that.

      • Auser72

I think it’s just a situation where phones with physical keyboards are becoming more of a niche in smartphone market. The use of swype and increase in average screen size is making phones with physical keyboards less relevant.

        • Tmobile

Psh! I have a dell streak 7 tablet, an iPod touch, and an old env3…. The physical qwerty keyboards are sooo much easier to type on! Thats why im getting the mytouch 4g slide.

        • None

I am guessing Auser72 is right.  Now that there is not a huge market for sliders but touchscreen keyboards have come a very long way (expecially with swype).  Of course slides will never go away (neither will $30 clamshells) because there is a market for them but I think they will not get as much press as times goes by.  Just my take.

You’re probably right. Personally I’d never buy a phone without a keyboard, but that’s just my personal preference. I use my phone extensively for email and the virtual keyboard, even with Swype, just doesn’t do it for me.

This is true.  Now we have no choice to but to wait and see what ICS looks like and THEN make a decision.  That is of course if ICS info leaks out or is officially released by then.

  • Android_enthu

    David,
seems to be either these are outdated news or something is not  right. Why would Samsung call a press conference on august 29 to unveil US based S2 phones and actually release them for Tmo on 10/26, two months after that. does not make sense. As per my analysis, this will be unveiled sometime in september before Iphone5.

    • None

Could it be that the other S2 phones will come soon after the press conference but only TMO Hercules coming so late?  It might be possible we will have the final varient of the S2 and they will not be realesed at the same time.

      • GT

Especially if ICS is on the phone.  Also, if it has a larger screen, production runs may force a later date.

Can any1 clarify for me, i always thought and by the looks of leaked pics the samsung galaxy s2 and hercules are two different phones! Am i wrong? It would make sense as the galaxy s2 would be released soon after the announcement at the end of aug while the hercules would come later!

    • TMOTECH

You are wrong.  The Hercules is T-Mobiles version of the Galaxy S2. it is bigger and faster than the other carriers with a 4.5 inch screen and it will be 42Mbps capable.

      • Asd

        Faster? How?
        Galaxy s2 1.2gh2 cortex a-9
        Hercules 1.2gh2 qualcomm

        Isn’t galaxys processor faster?

“42Mbps capable” faster.  However that’s probably still wrong if VZW has an LTE GSII.

Yea I know network is faster but which processor is better?

        • Anonymous

I would answer the question but that would “prove you right” about his statement.  Instead I’ma reword my comment and say that TMOTECH was not saying that the Herc processor was faster than the GSII processor.  He was saying that the screen was bigger and the HSPA+ speeds are faster.

42 Mbps is no joke, you will see speeds that rival LTE, consistency and latency are going to be the question with all the current 3G/4G devices saturating the network. If I can get 15 Mbps on my Galaxy S 4G, I expect no less than 15-22 on my 42Mbps device. (LTE may burst up to 25Mbps but is usually in the 12-17Mbps range.)

We don’t know the Tmo’s GS2/Herc’s processor yet.. It could be Exynos, Tegra 2, or a Qualcomm (which doesn’t make sense since Samsung never uses Qualcomm processor for their Smartphones).

I think he meant network speed the 42Mps, not the spec of the phone.

    OCTOBER 26? Crud.

Not sure my poor, gasping, wheezing MyTouch 3G can hold out that long. Dang it.

    Can the Sensation run Flash?

    • Tottenkopf

I was feeling the same way about my myt3g – thing was slow as a turtle…i picked up a vibrant on craigslist for $150 – what a difference.  only pain was using samsung kies to upgrade andoid to 2.2.  after jumping through hoops and barrels to finally do it successfully, it’s like another world has been opened up – going from the mt3g (a 2+ year old device) to the vibrant is like night and day….

      • Dave

        Does the Vibrant do flash?

And then when the Prime release date is announced there will be another super mega killer phone on the horizon.

Im tired of waiting for this crap…. I think im gonna go for the galaxy s2 at&t as soon as it comes out…its expensier but I get 15% off
They gonna loose customers because its coming out so late…also if iphone 5 comes out it will even take more costumer…and not everyone knows that iphone 5 wont have anything new but faster processor n bigger screen, ppl will still buy it. Not a lot ppl knows about phones….so they go by what they show on commercials which most of the times its just a lil feature…that other phones already have it!

    • The Truth

Man, your grammer is terrible! I bet you won’t leave tmobile anyway.

Android has never been a platform for people who know nothing about phones. Even despite that, its still leading in marketshare.

The people who know nothing about phones SHOULD buy an iPhone in my opinion, that makes for less idiotic reviews in the marketplace giving low scores to Widget apps because they don’t know how to use them! Let Apple cater to the idiots.
