Cablevision Wants T-Mobile Partnership, End To AT&T Talks

Cablevision, the 8th largest cable provider in the United States has come out in opposition of the T-Mobile/AT&T takeover talks with the hope it would be able to partner with T-Mobile as a cellular network partner. Cablevision declared their standing in a filing with the FCC arguing against the AT&T deal noting that Cablevision would be deprived of it’s best potential partner.

“Cablevision has been actively exploring expanding its mobile Wi-Fi service to incorporate traditional cellular broadband service as a canopy to complement its existing Wi-Fi service,” Cablevision wrote in a recent FCC filing. “Cablevision envisions offering a complete package of mobility services that would employ Wi-Fi and cellular broadband interchangeably and seamlessly.”

Cablevision expressed an interest in partnering up with T-Mobile over Sprint due to the GSM-based network and its larger international reach. Cablevision spokeswoman Kim Kerns told FierceWireless that any AT&T deal would “eliminate T-Mobile as the key wholesale provider needed to enable new companies to enter the wireless telephony market.” Kerns declined to comment on whether or not Cablevision and T-Mobile were in talks. T-Mobile declined to comment for the FierceWireless report.

Cablevision currently has more than 500,000 customers using its Wi-Fi network with more than 60% of those customers using it more than 10 times a month. Cablevision recently boosted their peak speeds to 15Mbps on the network. Cablevision, I’ve honestly never heard of you but I like you!

They don’t service my area so this proposal is useless to me, but since they are against the merger I am all for them speaking out.

    • Anonymous

yea but that’s not the point. the point is that, with a T-Mobile partnership, Cablevision is instantly a national/nationwide player in the mobile market division. That kind of merger makes you a Cablevision customer (that is if you are currently a T-Mobile customer). For all you know it’ll also help them expand their other services nationwide…and maybe offer cheap cable tv to their now mobile customers… ;)

      • 30014

I get the point just fine. Regardless of what happens with them and tmo, I wouldn’t use their services. I’m content with my provider. All I care about is the fact that they’re against the merger.

anything that increase competition sounds good to me… I think T-Mobile would be a better option to be with cablevision than to be eliminated by AT&T.

Cablevision used to be in Wichita, KS but then Cox communications moved in, (Cox is owned by Commcast) and cablevision went out.

They are direct competitors with Verizon Fios in the upper east coast, based out of New York. This deal would make perfect sense in those regards, with Verizon having an established wireless network, and also giving Cablevision a path to nationwide spectrum.

Go Cablevision!! And no at&t..This sounds way better than at&t crap…

  • I’D DEFINITELY HAVE TO SWITCH IF CABLEVISION TOOK OVER!!
Cablevision is the WORST cable company I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot! (DirecTV, Comcast, BrightHouse, TimeWarner, FiOS)

Funny that I have a polar opposite experience with them.

      • Anonymous

Even if you havent had a bad experience, their service is still more expensive than FIOS and without cause.  FIOS offers way more HD channels, way more OD HD channels and just a clearer more consistent picture as well as internet speeds that put Cablevision (IO) to shame.  TWC is not much better, but I would take them over Cablevision any day of the week.  I liked TWC until I got FIOS.  Little things like the fact that I can get HBO GO or ESPN Watch.  Wouldnt have access to either of those applications if I had Cablevision, plus I would be supporting the Dolans.

Verizon just dropped the mandatory contract and price by 10 bucks in my area recently. Cheaper, ok, but whatever. The internet speed putting Optimum too shame is a outright lie.

This is interesting info, especially since I am a Cablevision customer & a T-Mobile employee. Even more interesting considering that Cablevision charges crazy rates for their services and their customer service is not great….waiting to hear more about how this plays out.

  • yes ATT got some competition, i wonder what would happen if a regional carrier like MetroPCS or U.S. Cellular  decides they want to purchase T-mobile  and give them an offer thats higher than ATT’s how will the FCC respond or ATT.

  • Never heard of this cable vision company but whatever makes T-Mo stay, then I’ll accept it. Go T-mo!

  • I have cablevision (brooklyn ny) and i would be much happier with this than the merger.

  • OMG, that would be great. Yes, help in the fight Cablevision, SAVE US! I just watched the news & they just cemented that AT&T is the worst in customer satisfaction coming in dead last of the 4 major wireless carriers via. a JD Power & Associates survey.

    • ao5050

I totally agree I was an AT&T customer for over 10 yrs and their customer service SUCKS no regards for customer satisfaction nor hear their concerns. Practically they don’t give it dam about customers, all they care about is MAKING MONEY!!!
So I switched to tmobile years ago.

      • It’s sad. My grandma is a AT&T retiree & even w/ her massive discounts from them she will never touch their wireless service. She attest against them.

I think I had Cablevision service once. I cannot remember where I lived at the time though.

  • infinityminusone

Is it just me or more and more people are coming out against this merger!!!

Based on the comments I really hope its just not the loyal T-Mobile customers opposing the deal. It’s good to see senators, Sprint(although they have their own reasons) and now the not so big players voicing their opposition.

  • TMoFan

I’m sad to see the T-Mobile I know vanish, but any deal with another company is better than at&t. I’m not against this sellout because I want to see T-Mobile remain as it is; I’m against it because selling out to at&t would have a detrimental effect on the industry and consumers. Predatory at&t knew that T-Mobile would have to partner with someone so they made an offer Rene Obermann couldn’t refuse. I hope this thing gets rejected and another path is found for T-Mobile USA.

  • I know Cablevision would be just as expensive as AT&T, but I still would support the Cablevision deal for the pure competition stand point. That’s all I care about. I could care less who got T-Mobile, as long as it’s not an existing Cellular company.

  • Dudznyc

I have cablevision here in NY, and I actually think that would be a better deal since it’s two smaller companies joining together to improve and create innovation. AT&T is perfectly fine, if VZW can handle all the Droids, new iPhones and iPads on it’s 3G network, then AT&T can most certainly handle the strain by altering its bandwidth and spectrum in order to move forward… for instance depleting 2G service in areas where 3G is present; that will free up spectrum where 2G (a.k.a. EDGE) once held and allow them to move other technologies in.

Point is AT&T & Verizon own all the backhaul, etc. so AT&T does NOT need T-Mobile in order to free up spectrum constraints, it simply needs to renovate and reuse it’s current spectrum.

hmm I never heard of this company over here in los Angeles we dnt have it. I have at&t u verse I know some people hate att wireless service I do to lol there cellphone service is horrible! But there u verse cable is a whole different story. I think cuz its a fiber optic network so far I have been impressed I am getting 30 mbps on my home internet connection its the same speed I was getting on Verizon fios. Also u-verse has a bunch of HD channels like Verizon fios. So yea .. I know this has nothing to do with this article, all I care about is T-Mobile hopefully this company doesn’t mess up T-Mobile I may not have T-Mobile but I know T-Mobile is a good company.

I don’t care what you New Yorkers think. You miss the bigger picture. AT&T, cough cough, I mean SBC posing as AT&T, is horrible period. If they get FCC and Justice department approval for the purchase of T Mobile all T Mobile customers will be screwed period. They have the worst customer service  and are known for predatory pricing. They also  pretty much do not care about the customers one bit. Oh and they like to lie a lot as well just to get their way.
Perhaps Dolan is not much better but at least it does not consolidate the wireless industry into a major player duopoly thereby creating a chance for predatory pricing and less competition.
Seriously this is the best option I have heard of yet. We all know DT has screwed us. They blew a chance to make T Mobile fantastic and their management screwed the pooch royally. Fact is DT has the money to make T Mobile great they are the second largest Telecom in the world. They just don’t want to. They have given up. If the deal does not go through then Cablevision wanting to take on T Mobile and keep it as separate network is much better than DT just selling them off at firesale price which is what they would have done. So look at this as a much better outcome period.

hahaha! Funny how it would be ok for someone else to buy us but not AT&T? if anybody takes over it should definitely be ATT. Wise up folks, T-Mobile losing suport from DT we will eventually end up like Cricket if we dont do this. I rather be the powerhouse of the Mobile Industry as part of AT&T rather than an experiment with a low end never cellular company like Cablevision. Plus, we will have acces to the best, bar none, OS of Windows Phone 7! we only have one sad little HD7 right now!

if you have been on the phone 8 years and are so smart, why no advancement??? Reason= LOSER/LIAR

    • really?!?!

If AT&T takes over, you will be out of a job, within 12 months. You will then be a unemployed non- powerhouse, wishing you had a job desperado!

    • Lets think about this for a moment. AT&T is one of the largest companies in the nation, they were so large, they were broken up because they refused to allow outside hardware on their lines (meaning, you bought a phone from AT&T and had them install it in your home, for you to use, then you paid them not only monthly charges, but ALSO rental for that phone you owned, the rental went to the actual connection, aside from the monthly dialtone you paid for). They were so huge that you had ONE option of long distance, AT&T. You wanted to call someone far away? You paid for it. You paid more during certain times of the call too. You wanted someone to call you, well, for a while there you paid for that as well. You moved? Oh well, even if its next door, AT&T gave you a completely new number, and then had the nerve to charge you for it. Wanted someone who called your old number to know you have a new one? Charge for that too. Oh, you cant hear on your line, too bad, we are AT&T and thats how its supposed to be.

So do you REALLY think AT&T, the same AT&T that only split up 20 years ago, and then bought out all but one of the split companies isnt gonna do the same thing again? Do you REALLY think that the ONLY company that can buy T-Mobile, by the way, for only 2 Billion less than AT&T Wireless sold to itself – which is still more than 10 BILLION of what T-Mobile is worth, isnt going to raise prices to recoup that? Get with the times… Sprint, Verizon, hell even US Cellular all could have bought T-Mobile, and Sprint was going to, except AT&T was willing to pay that 10 Billion more than Sprint, for one purpose, and it aint for spectrum or deployment of LTE or HSPA+ in rural areas where they already have spectrum and T-Mobile doesnt, nope, its for one thing and one thing only, to make more money than the largest company in America, Verizon.

If you think that you will have a job after the merger? You are sadly mistaken. Almost everyone at AT&T Wireless was canned once Cingular bought them. Once SBC bought Bell South, almost everyone was canned there too. Did you think that everyone from Suncom became a T-Mobile employee when that merger went through? Absolutely not. Matter of fact, my former roommate at T-Mobile in Seattle was offered to move to Puerto Rico to take over Suncom stores and train T-Mobile employees to take over for the Suncom ones. I laugh at the fact that you think some big death star in shining armor is gonna save you. The only thing it will save you from is going to the bank to cash a check every week or two.

As for your seriously skewed vision on Windows Phone… more people STILL buy BlackBerry than Windows Phone. Android, iOS, and BlackBerry 7 are making their way to the top faster than Nokia can sign papers taking WP over Symbian. If you think being on AT&T is gonna help you sell more Windows phones, here is a little tidbit of advice, GET OVER IT! AT&T doesnt sell Windows, they sell Apple! APPLE SELLS, WINDOWS DOESNT! People want iPhone, not Windows.

I really wish the best for you, but since you are already jaded and upset working for T-Mobile, might I suggest taking that crappy attitude of yours over to Sprint, where they love people like you. Cause I can tell you this, AT&T wont keep you, even if you are the top seller for T-Mobile.

      • Desperado_87

I am possibly the best employee t-mobile has ever had and a lot of its award winning practices came right out of my (crappy attitude) little brain. No one is crying or complainging or cares about what happened back when i dont care. Right now the bottom line is AT&T will take over, there is nothing that will stop it from happening. SPRINT and Cablevision can try as they may just to fail and slow the merger down. As for the Windows comment, dont get your panties in a bunch. Blackberries are for old people, Android is for little girls, and Windows is for serious people that dont need apps and video games while they drive. and if anyone is spooning anybody, it seems the iPhone is pretty much your secret love affair and that device is plain dumb. my brother has the iphone 4 and never did it outperform my old HD2, let alone my brothers ATT Samsung Windows phone. So everyone wipe the tears. i needed a good laugh and you guys did it for me. serious losers. Plus im an educated person who enjoys the call center environment. if i lose my job i’ll just get another one. dont cry becasue you all dont have options if you lose your jobs. Hope for the best, expect and be prepared for the worst. Later, gayboys! hahahahahahahaha! WP7 for Life!

        • v8dreaming

Who is the “serious loser”? Them, or the one that keeps coming back (That would be you.).
Also, an “educated person that enjoys the call center environment”? That high school diploma/G.E.D. of yours doesn’t make you a highly educated person.

“Later, gayboys! hahahahahahahaha! WP7 for Life!”

All the proof I need to prove my point.

          A few things…

          “Blackberries are for old people.”
BlackBerrys are for highly educated business people. So … you’re an educated person who enjoys the call center environment and you’re toting WP7? Really? I am a supervisor for AT&T. Know how many WP7 phones we sell compared to BlackBerry phones? Let’s just say WP7 could use a big push.

          “Android is for little girls.”
Android is for people who like to multitask and want their phone to be able to everything they need it to. It has apps for every walk of life. Oh, and it doesn’t have that crappy squared look of WP7. Please. It’s like the Atari of cell phones. Only Atari is awesome.

“Windows is for serious people that don’t need apps and video games while
          they drive.”
It’s hard to take you seriously when you’re saying words like “gayboys.” How old are you? 14? 8? 3?

          “It seems the iPhone is
pretty much your secret love affair and that device is plain dumb.”
I’m no fan of the iPhone either, but it did revolutionize the mobile phone industry. What has your WP7 OS revolutionized? Besides the revolutionary idea of making you look like a complete idiot, it has done absolutely nothing for the cell phone industry. Windows should stick to computers, where it belongs, unless Microsoft decides to bring something that’s really revolutionary to the cell phone industry.

        • Chimphappyhour

I love how you have to keep tooting your own horn here as the top performer. If AT&T really takes over, you will not have a job. They will outsource your job in a heartbeat. I know because I know someone who oversees call centers for AT&T. As for being an educated person, so are most of the people I see working at fast food restaurants right now. Truth is, there is a glut of people out there with degrees. See you behind the counter at McD’s.

        • Jcj1

      • Desperado_87

truuuust me i’ve been on T-Mobile’s payroll for 8 years now and have been very proud and outspoken about it! I love this company, but unlike the Captain of the Titanic, my @$$ is not staying onboard a sinking ship. We simply cannot make it in the market anymore unless we start competing against Cricket and those $19.99 Life Alert Phones on infomercials. Bottom line is someone is going to buy us out. if I was going to be adopted i would prefer the billionair family of 10 rather than the welfare ridden family of three. Get my drift?

truuuust me i’ve been on T-Mobile’s payroll for 8 years now and have been very proud and outspoken about it! Really?  Are you not smart enough to know the difference between a cable company (a small one at that) and the largest cell phone company?  Really?  Sometimes I wish people would think for a minute before the post.  BTW – If you want to be part of AT&T so badly no one is stopping you.

Awww… how cute! like little kids arguing over which teletuby is the cutest. Simply put, it’s going to happen, hopefully i keep my job. im the best performer for the best call center for t-mobile so im not too worried about job security, but if i lose my job i’ll just look for something is else. Maybe a moderator for TMONEWS, oh wait, this website wont be any good afterwards… Awwww… where will all the tough cyper typers post their well thought out, based on speculations, opinions. Hahaha!

Keep your job because you’re the best performer at the best Tmo call center? Oh, have I got news for you. AT&T outsources that stuff. You want this deal to go through? Get your resume ready and get ready to flip burgers.

p.s. I’m pretty sure i stated that cablevision is a “never cellular” company. Cablevision buying us would be like a McDonalds taking over a Firestone Tire shops, dumb. Haha! have a great Thursday Everyone! Stick Together!

I just want to be with someone so I can operate as well as I have been doing as a T-Mobile member.  I know things will be much different when the merger is done and what I said is a dream. We need some help!!!!
