G1 email troubles plaguing early adopters??

email

For the G1, word on the street and in the hands of the users has been a fairly positive user experience, until they tried the email. Recent reports have pop3/imap accounts on the G1 plagued with troubles, while gmail is of course working just peachy. Between connection errors, messages not sending/receiving and other errors, email problems are plaguing users everywhere.

While early reports focus on comcast users, the troubles don’t seem to be specific to any email provider and don’t differ depending on the email account While the “official” word from T-mobile shows this problem being researched with the highest priority, that doesn’t do much in the way to solve the immediate problem. Early adopters are the bread and butter of phone launches now and as word leaks out about such early difficulties especially something so monumentally wrong as email usage it could turn off those who had planned to pick up the phone in the near future. I suppose the flip side to all this is to get the problems out of the way quickly and let future buyers, the less geeky and the less savvy enjoy the phones without the early buying headaches.

Via the official T-mobile forums, no relation to us of course, the Administrator had this to say:

“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client.  Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.””

They are asking for anyone with troubles to report the nature of their problem in an effort to help T-mobile solve this problem sooner rather than later. Users report that deleting and re-adding the account has not worked nor has dropping the email count below 100 on the server. So for the moment, thou must endure and hopefully a fix is right around the corner.

Sound off in the comments…how is your email working?

I have noticed these problems with the email as well with the IM app. Aim and yahoo are extremely glitchy but I haven’t run into a single problem with google. Sounds a little funny to me…

  3. T1 Connect says:

my email works just fine i got 4 external email setup two from my cable co one from my site and one for yahoo plus. haven’t had any problems with any except failure to notify me of a new message thats it. no bugs glitches or whatever people are complaining about. just remember when you setup your email there are two parts incomming and outgoing. contact your provider if you do not know how to setup your email or for your correct server addresses.

  9. rajr89 says:

I’ve had no problems with my IMAP email. Everything seems to be working fine. Only problem I’ve had is that AIM does log me off every once in a while but I dont use it enough to really care.

  10. T1 Connect says:

@tmofan12 follow this msn, live and hotmail is a web based email theres no pop. in order for you to use msn you must go to mobile.msn.com login from there and bookmark your msn logged in and put it on one of your desktops. voila done.

  14. T1 Connect says:

Yea would have been nice to have windows live like winmo and blackberry but guess that’s gonna have to do right now. Tmofan12 this phone is like crack I just can’t put it down had it 6 days and still going nuts over it.

  15. Macho says:

  16. byost83 says:

as far as i’m concerned, no matter what new phone you get, there’s always problems. There will always be something you don’t like and something that drives you crazy. But that’s just what happens, no phone will ever be perfect. My wife and I both have the G1 and have never had a more entertaining, complete phone! With brand new phones, espicially first models, you can always almost count on something being wrong. This phoone also has a huge hurdle to jump being the first android os. Knowing this, if you were that worried about it, you shouldn’t have even ordered it! As for the rest of us, enjoy!

  17. @david says:

    Viva la G1 Revolution !!!

  18. @david says:

    no but seriously.

first gen of the first Android Os device on a sleek easy to use all in one entertainment device. apple folks are just jealous that they are not as special anymore. until now the only phones that were competative never measured up. the andriod os has room to improve but with open OS we can expect great improvments made quickly by 3rd party programers.

  19. Sun.NY says:

My emails have been working Flawlessly
Onglitches my phone has had is with the sd Card

Sometimes the phone doesnt recognise it.
    Its all good though,

Has anyone created a Videorecorder app yet?

  20. Andréa says:

I can’t complain I have had a gmail acount since around 2004, it blew my yahoo and hotmail acounts out of the water…I have never used an email address from the internet company… thats like relying on your work provided life insurance to catch you if something happens. BUT I AM SOOO FREAKING HAPPY ^________^ this phone is great!!!!!!!!!

  21. buck says:

My G1 has been having problems keeping me logged onto AIM, mail has been coming sporadically, and I have had a time getting used to the keyboard setup. Portion where buttons are makes it awkward to type. However, it never locked up up while switching programs and surfing the net. OS is awesome. Don’t know if I’ll be keeping it. May go back to a BB. I’m still working with it. Great phone with a few glitches.

  22. tmofan12 says:

@t1 ya dude i fall asleep playing with my phone.. my girl hates it cuz she says i dont pay attention to her anymore.. haha.. but im looking forward to the updates.. again every new phone has issues, but the thing about the G1 is its open source meaning we can fix these with updates and add ons.. all my friends with there iphones kept saying there’s were better.. after they saw what the G! could do they shut up and said the iphone set the bar thats why the g1 cameout.. lol

  23. Persia says:

I DON’T GET EMAIL NOTIFICATION WHEN I GET A NEW EMAIL. WHY OH WHY. STILL I LOVES THE G1.

  24. Mack says:

Mine works with Yahoo and Aol without problems. I’m loving it!!!! I have 2 iPhones and a Curve, G1 way better.

  25. T1 Connect says:

No disrespect to tmonews but where do people come up with these problems. Cause I don’t see what these people that’s reporting this(not tmonews) are talking about

  26. JD says:

Aim and yahoo IM are seriously buggin logging me out constantly and Tmobile has no explanation as to what’s going on. Only google works. If anyone else is experiencing this please report it to Tmobile. Has anyone tried forwarding an email through Gmail??? It doesn’t let you edit the body of the message. That sucks, peoples email addresses are exposed this way.

I’m a t-mobile blackberry and PDA tech support rep and just wanted to let you know that there are going to be numerous OTA updates to be released to everyone’s G1’s that will be fixing the current email issues and any other issues that need to be addressed…thanks for your time!

My G1 works great. If anyone wants aim sound notification all you have to do is copy and paste the sound from your AIM on the pc to your sd card and set it using extended rings.Has anyone found a way to stream mms:// url yet like thestreamcenter.com stations?I wish tcpmp would make an android player for me to stream my live radio.

  33. Mags says:

@persia I had the same issue happen to me today. My only solution was to power off & power back on the G1. My notifications are working perfectly again.

  34. Fujitsujeff says:

I have to agree with TI Connect. Some people are really going off the deep end on these issues. My External Email Account is not suffering from connection issues. It happenned one time, and I just removed the account and reinstalled it and i havent had a single problem since.

So far I have only come across 3 problems with the G1.

    1) It is unclear how to select multiple emails and delete them all

    2) my computer is too old so it won’t allow me to drag and copy files onto my G1

    3) Instant Messaging is not as good as it is on the LX, and no notepad/document apps available yet

  35. Backalley says:

I’m so glad I waited for all of you early adopters to report in with your experiences. It looks like I’ll just wait on revised and updated model and wait until the app store has more available apps.

  36. tvphil says:

I’m a comcast customer and my pop mail has been fine from day one.

  37. Macho says:

I don’t think there’s a better IM then the LX one but the G1’s I’M service is good enough

  38. NYer says:

Just because you are not experiencing the problem does not mean they are not real for other people. I am a long term TMobile customer and advance ordered 2 G1s – one for myself and one for my son. I own a small business and am dependent upon receiving email in a timely fashion. I received my G1 last Monday and experienced substantial problems with receiving emails from my AOL accounts.

I switched from a Blackberry and had been anxiously awaiting my G1. While I am not a techie, I am not a novice either. I set up my Gmail account in anticipation of getting the phone and followed prior posts about getting my contacts from Outlook onto Gmail. I had nothing but problems once I received my G1 with getting my contacts correct on the G1 and in receiving my emails.

After going through the appropriate steps, I had all my contacts transfer onto the G1 but also had over 100 contacts with only telephone numbers and no additional information. I tried setting up my three AOL email accounts and none of them ever worked properly. The emails never became resident on the phone, disappeared each time I went out of email, I had to repeatedly go through the set up for each account and never once received a notification that I received any emails despite receiving dozens of emails over the first several days.

To me, the most frustrating part was the lack of support from Tmobile customer service. I have found their customer service to be outstanding in the past but when I contacted them for support, they knew less about the G1 than me. I spoke with the PDA support group and even spoke to a supervisor who supposedly knew the most out of the group. In a nutshell, their answer to my problems were to tell me that they did not have adequate training on the G1s, that they did not know how to help me and told me to look online and/or ask for help online from some of the blogs.

While there were many good aspects to the G1 (and my son loves it as a more recreational user), I believe that they rushed to release the G1 without working out the kinks and clearly without proper training for cusomer support. One customer service rep told me that they had one unit for the entire section he worked in and they had to pass it around to try and assist customers. In addition, I found the battery to be woefully inadequate. Unfortunately, I returned my G1 and went back to my BB. My son kept his.

When people make a post to this site, for the most part, they are looking for help and insight — not a post belittling their comments. Similarly, posting that “it didn’t happen to me” does nothing to help people correct their problems or to guide TMobile (which I hope reads comments from their real customers on this site or gets feedback from them) in how to better serve their customers.

I have my school email set up on mine. I use my email all the time emailing back and fourth with professors and advisers and I have not had any problems at all.

  40. Paidro says:

I love the G1 however i have been experiencing some of the problems as well…I got the phone 10/21 and had absolutely no problems, till this morning that is(10/25). For the past 5 days, i had been texting like a mad man…to be alarmed that i could receive text but not send them….to anyone on any network was kind of wierd, but i just thought it was a glich and rebooted…tried again and again to send text still no luck…

So, about a few hours later, to my dismay, i broke down and called customer service…had me do 2 soft resets…those didnt take….then about 3 hard resets…still no luck…told me to send it in for replacement…what to do????

  41. cmgts1 says:

@NYer: I can definitely understand your frustration. If the support staff didn’t have an adequate number of units to really learn how to use it, I’m horrified. 10 years ago I was the lead tech support for the Palm VII project. We had extensive training with the unit and each techsupport rep had one to take home and use. This was true of the beta and after rollout. I’m horrified to hear of the issues you faced, it would not have bothered me if it was marketed as a a beta (test before open sales, usually for free or at least a substantial discount).
Can’t help but wonder about 2 things:
    1) I have a curve but don’t use any emails but web based (been using Gmail since I first had access before it went public and love it, as well as excite and yahoo). I haven’t researched it (no need to) but don’t think aol is directly accessible via blackberry. If that is true how was the g1 worse?
    2) 3 aol accounts? Did you try accessing directly via your gmail account? (import into your gmail, then access gmail thru G1).

For all those who are aghast at a curve not being used with pop or exchange mail, I don’t have a data plan either. I bought it because it was the only respectable, affordable option tmo had to my treo 270 after that went south (4 years old). If not for the G1 I was seriously thinking about jumping ship to get a centro, but no uma (wifi and uma is what I use the curve for). Would love to have a G1 but $25/mo for data for 2 years ($600)that I could just as easily get via wifi when I truly need it is too step for me. I did get one for my son in college thinking how he could really benefit, for me it would have been a nice frill.

  42. fujitsujeff says:

Well, I will agree with Nyer, T-mobile did not give their reps enough training to prepare for all the questions the release of this phone would cause. I admit, when I had my problem, T-mo CSR was no help and I had to solve problem on my own. I must admit, w/o androidcommunity.com, I would not have been prepared to navigate the G1 …

  43. Victor Woodroffe says:

I am very disapointed with this phone. It was designed to compete with the Apple Giant, though it was not given the feature set to compete. I am also sad that tmobile has embraced the industry practice of treating their existing customers like idiots, charging them extra for data services that could be provided under the existing $19.99 plan. Tmobile is telling me that I must pay an additional $24.99, on top of the $19.99 that I am already paying for data services. They report this is because the G1 uses its own data connectivity package (Even though it operates on the exact same band as the rest of their 3g phones). Existing customers beware, for your next bill may be very interesting. How can they justify this, when the entire point of a sim card is to switch between multiple devices?

  44. Gigi says:

HTC batteries are not good just have to get extended one if they have it

  45. iwantflash4g1 says:

Yes I get connection errors all the time, not 100 percent of the time probably only 40 percent of the time. The g1 works fine and I also have a problem with it reading my sd card as well. Here are three vital issues that need to be fixed – Flash capabilities – duh – being able to save apps to your memory card duh, and better more comprehensive 3g service. A video recorder would be nice but comon all video taken from a phone is crap.

  46. D says:

    @All complainers.
1st of I use all functions alot and I haven’t had any problems with connections or anything yet.Obviously those 3 thingz are Flash4G1 mentioned are needs and they’ll come soon.According to reports there will be a camera feature coming. There is already a touch qwerty pad being released in Jan. And as for saving apps to sd cards, that’ll be out soon i’d guess.Google isn’t allowing apps creators to upload em till monday so from next week we should all see a new side to the already exciting G1.Just because ur having issues it doesn’t mean the phone sucks.Give it time. There is not 1 flashy electrical device that has been released without issues or a recall including the “almighty IPhone”.Also try restarting you phone cuzz I’ve heard it helps.

  47. slothloveschunk says:

Gmail is fine of course, all my other emails are web based anyway so its no problem jumping on the web and checking them that way. I just figured that windows live integration will be eventual.

Besides, there are all kinds of tricks you can do like have email auto-forwarede to your gmail acct and then using google labels to sort it. Its not that serious.

Would like to see some exchange support to get work email directly or pushed, but using web-base is not an inconvenience until then.

And I just posted this via my G1 :) this phone is badass. If youre t-mo loyal and don’t want to jump carriers, then this is the ‘it’ phone for sure.

  48. Kevman420 says:

The problem I have had with POP email is when I delete the mail goes to trash well when I empty trash all deleted mail shows back up within 5 minutes. I have called tmo and they said a tech would be calling me and thanks for loggin it. NO CALL been 3 days. She said let me see if I can delete them from server here. Then came back on the line and said a tech would call me. Does this app import my mail to a google server then send it to me? I really dont want my POP mail being filtered through google servers.
Anyway not sure on that one.
I stopped using mail client temp and its a big problem cause I come from a blackbery that had no mail issues and I am kind of used to getting my mail on phone. Hope this is fixed as I may have to sell G1 if I continue to have issues.
Sorry G1 I dont have time for email issues!!!
I need my email to work correctly.
Not like I can just tell everyone to use my new google account.
I had my optonline account for 8 years… YIKES!!!

  49. JD says:

The G1 is without a doubt a very good phone, however, I do agree with people…you should not have some many inconveniences for a phone that A LOT of us paid $300 for. I mean I’ve seen people say “smack the phone to get it to read your SD card or make the compass work” or accepting the fact that AIM and Yahoo instant messenger sign you off and only Google IM works fine (with the exception that it erases your entire convo at random times w/o reason) That’s a bit far fetched…there’s no reason people should have to perform ridiculous tactics in order for the phone to function as it SHOULD in the 1st place. So I do understand everyones frustrations. And Tmobile has been of little help when contacting customer care. The best everyone can do is make sure that Tmobile is aware of everything.

These issues are always expected with a 1st release, but probably a little more than we all bargained for or have patience for.

Some of you may not be experiencing problems or maybe you’re just reluctant to admit it or maybe its not that big of deal to you. However $180- $300 is more than enough money and people just simply want what they paid for. With that said either deal with your issues until they are fixed or send back the phone.

Me personally, I just sent it back today. I’ll purchase it again once these issues have been resolved. I’m sure most will be resolved but not all. Til then, back to my sidekick. G1 still rocks. Just not as much as I hoped.

Why doesn’t everyone just forward their emails from other accounts to their gmail account???
