T-Mo Samsung Galaxy Note 4 gets minor software update

note4 update

T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 4 only officially launches today, but those who received their pre-orders earlier this week have already got their first software updates. And before you get too excited, no, it’s not Android 5.0. Instead, it’s a small (~65MB) update issued to fix some performance problems. Chief among those is battery performance.

The carrier’s support site is yet to be updated with the new software details, but if you have a Galaxy Note 4, you should receive a notification telling you it’s available to download. If you don’t, go in to your settings menu and check manually. As always, let us know if you notice anything remarkably different in performance after you’ve installed.

Less lag from the recent apps button. Quicker data speeds. One small hiccup for me is that the Pocket app I use quite often is force closing now.

    • Vlad

Samsung saying this update should noticeably improve battery performance.
How was your battery before this update?
Did you installed that app before update? Maybe clear cache and data

      • Sean

Battery was really good before update, so I’m excited to see what happens now.
I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it… Still force closing. Bummer.

        • juan

I just got my note 4 and using the web.like youto facebook maps ..gets really hot any body got thesame problem or knows why???

      • SEBA

My battery lasted about 8-9 hours of heavy use about the same as on my Note 3

        • Vlad

          Any use varies…
How many of those hrs were screen time if you know?

        • SEBA

I don’t, my guess is about 5 hrs. I do have problems with couple apps that are not working on note 4 but worked on note 3. So if anyone drinks Starbucks, you can’t use the app to pay for your coffee.

        • Mike

you can sideload Starbucks 2.7.1 apk and it work for my note 4.

        • SEBA

Thanks a lot, just did it!

    • J.J.

yes recent apps is much quicker. it bothered me how slow it was.

  • BuddyLuv

My battery performance was outstanding before the update. I hope it doesn’t screw it up now.

    • Vlad

Good to know that there’s people with good battery results, since I’ve seen so many complain about it.
Even though all reviews I’ve read pretty much happy with battery performance. We should not forget, this phone uses same battery as note 3, but in theory should be more power hungry.

  • H Nathan Harper

O2 sensor is significantly improved, it was having trouble before the update.

  • Tmobile User

Fixed 4glte performance issues I’ve seen here in South Florida. I had to disable VoLTE on order make phone calls. Battery life seems better based on the few hours I’ve been actively using it.

    • Android_God

Yes!!! People were telling me I sounded like absolute garbage but once I disabled that, boom, sounded great!

  • AA-Ron

Just tried to pick up Note from store and they informed me that they were waiting for a delivery from ups… Wtf? Shouldn’t they have been delivered by Thursday at the latest?

    • Vlad

      What location?
From my past experiences they usually have them at least couple days before

      • AA-Ron

Downtown Washington DC off of Connecticut Ave. A pretty busy and visible location I might add.

        • Vlad

          Really strange…
I’ll be next to store myself soon, so we’ll see, but I’m in Brooklyn NY

        • AA-Ron

Even though I’m an android fan, I have to give apple props where props are due. On launch day, this would never have happened for the iPhone.

    • luis

Same here im in new jersey

    • Angel Nieves

I was planning to take the day off from work to go buy it at the store and play with it, but changed my mind when I noticed that Samsung is giving up to $190 for those that pre-ordered and trade-in their old phone. If T-mo would give you $80 they would give you $120, so that you would get at least $200 for your trade-in. I’m trading in my Galaxy S4. I am waiting for UPS to deliver my phone.

  • luis

Just went to mobile store to get note 4 rep told me waiting on ups to get phones smh aint they supposed to have the phones already

    • Vlad

      Are you joking?
You already been posting here as if you already have the phone

      • Android_God

I think that was Lois. ;)

  • Toasted_Cracker

Everything is much much MUCH smother now and lag is also greatly improved upon. Can’t comment on battery life just yet.

  • Vlad

Just called 2 locations near me, both confirmed phone in stock, Brooklyn NY
    Stores open at 10 am.

  • Myphone007

What exactly is the list of fixes? How can they release an update and not release a list of fixes? It is funny how everyone will update and not know exactly what is in the update.

    • Vlad

There’s never exact list during any update from any manufacturer.
But this one is official Samsung update, not just some hacker workaround.

    • Android_God

Maybe the FoodBabe needs to get on this!!!

  • Shlomo Boukai

I really hope this fixes the battery life. I got my Note 4 on Monday with all the other preorders and I’ve been struggling to maintain 6 hours with the battery.

    • Vlad

Screen on time or total usage?

      • Shlomo Boukai

Total usage although I was using the screen a lot.

    • steve

I am also experiencing atrocious battery life compared to my note 2…
update didn’t do a thing to help (I’ve had my note 4 since wednesday)

      • Shlomo Boukai

Yeah me too. Yesterday my phone battery lasted about 7.5 hours and the biggest hog seemed to be Android System. I can’t wait for Zerolemon to release their battery case for the Note 4.

  • hanfeedback

Got the update this morning, got to be honest, never thought the battery life was bad since I got it, could make it through a day of light usage with only 25% being used so Im curious to see if the update makes it even better.

  • Android_God

If you are having issues with mobile data speeds this may fix that for you. It did for me! I went from <2Mbps to the normal 15mbps I get in my area. Want to run your Note in ART runtime? When I try (before or after this update) it keeps upgrading my android apps evertime I restart. This DIDN'T happen with my LG G3 when I tried to run it in ART. Probably not a big deal anyway as the phone seems plenty fast without ART.

I noticed to that for indoor viewing I can turn the screen brightness WAY DOWN compared to the Note 2. I have vision issues so I would imagine that those without can probably turn it down even more and reap the battery savings!!

I do miss lock screen widgets and being able to add shortcuts!!!! DAMN YOU SAMSUNG!!

    • RJ Scott

I changed to ART on my LG G3 the morning I got it and it most definitely updated the apps the first time on reboot. Not each reboot though.

      • Android_God

Sorry but are you saying on your Note 4 all the apps updated again?

        • RJ Scott

Yeah. I restarted the phone and it ran through updating the apps again. It should have only done that one time after changing to ART.

        • Android_God

Ok cool! I bet that will eventually be fixed! Maybe not until L is pushed out though?

        • Android_God

RJ you and I are two of only five at even know about the art run time!! We are a superior breed!

        • SabreNoFangs

No you’re just a douche bag with way too much time on your hands bud… sorry, but someone had to tell you.

        • Android_God

          BOO HOO HOO

        • Darwinski

          LOL

    • Android_God 2.0

You know, you really should uninstall that ART runtime app.. it might mess up your phone.

    • Darwinki

      >>I have vision issues

You have more issues that just your eyes…

      • Android_God

so now T Mobile employees are making personal attacks.

  • Android_God

BTW if anyone from the TMO social media team is reading this PHUCK YOU! Whoever handles their Twitter OBVIOUSLY DIDN’T KNOW what ART runtime even was but acted like they knew and implied it was some sort of app that I INSTALLED. Douchebags.

    • Android_God

A note to you young people starting off in your first job…don’t ever pretend to know something you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. You will INSTANTLY lose any credibility and trust that you are trying to develop with people. And that is EXACTLY what this idiotic social media managers think they can get away with because they are hiding behind a social media handle. And BTW everyone seems to be a social media manager these days.

      • TMOGUY

Popping off like that is not going to get you any help at T-Mobile, or any major corporation, for that matter. Most employees would rather have you move on and just patronize our competition because folks like you are not what we come to work for everyday.

        • Android_God

I didn’t pop off to them at all. I simply stated my issue. Clowns run their Twitter.

“Most employees would rather have you move on and just patronize our competition because folks like you are not what we come to work for everyday.”

BOO HOO HOO. I will screen cap this and shoot it up your chain and see what they think of you telling customers to go elsewhere.

        • Darwinski

          >>>>I will screen cap this and shoot it up your chain and see what they >>>think of you telling customers to go elsewhere.

Ohhh nooo! I am sure they are scared now!

        • thepanttherlady

Make sure you quote the correct poster. ;)

        • Android_God

Haha! I wonder who the douche bag is that runs there douchebag Twitter

        • Android_God

You would be surprised at how much they do care about you t mobile employees popping off.

        • Android_God

I see you are an anonymous coward.

      • T-Mobile Cares

Thank you for proving me correct yet again.

      • Darwinski

Clearly, the only idiot here is you.

        • Android_God

Another TMOBILE employee stalking customers who make negative comments. Does working at T Mobile suck that badly?

    • Chris

It’s ironic how you’re calling other people online douche when you just acted like one. Good job.

    • T-Mobile Cares

Android Runtime (ART) is an application runtime environment used by the Android mobile operating system. ART replaces Dalvik, which is the process virtual machine originally used by Android, and performs transformation of the application’s bytecode into native instructions that are later executed by the device’s runtime environment.

Now on to the bigger problem. We do not program applications for devices, nor do compile Android OS. We take great pride in the customer service we offer to our customers regarding the services we offer. You and the five other people who know what ART is and how it applies to the Android OS would know that this is outside of T-Mobile’s scope of support and would contact the device manufacturer or a particular software developer for advanced assistance

I take exception to your comments. Our Social Media Team, T-Force, are highly trained advanced support representatives that are very passionate about their jobs. They are there to provide real customer with serious problems. And while I respect your right to voice your comments, please do so in a constructive manner. You have only proven that you are truly ignorant and not really an Android G-d.

      • Android_God

LOLOLOL!!!!! MANY people on this forum know what ART is! Nice job implying TMOBILE users are ignorant. Keep it up though! Your attitude toward your customers is fantastic.

      • Android_God

I have no idea that this would be outside your scope of support!!! YOUR TWITTER REP simply could have said that, but instead implied it was an app I had installed. Then you go on to imply, “Our Social Media Team, T-Force, are highly trained advanced support representatives”. Wouldn’t someone with, “advanced support” know what ART runtime is? This issue was actually dead until you decided to stick your nose in it. You are just embarrassing your own company.

      • Android_God

        You are in India, right?

        • T-Mobile Cares

Well, that was not condescending. Although we owe you no explanatuons, the core of your tech support personnel, as well as all of our T-Force task are located in the U.S. I personally am in the US. I well point out that the locales of a person should have no bearing on their ability our knowledge. You should check yourself before making statements that only prove you are ignorant.

        • Android_God

What do you have against people from India? Why did that question prompt such a defensive answer. It sounds like you are in India, no shame in that!

        • Marcelo_L

          Dude…So not cool.

      • FliGuyRyan

        Bravo to you!
And these commenters can stick it!!!

      • Darwinski

        Ignore that idiot.

      • Marcelo_L

Yeah man, you keep on doing what you can to help out the customers….

So, while we’re on THAT subject. Can you comment as to the availability of the Note Edge?? I went to the Samsung Experience and they pulled them from the shelf. I went to my local TMo, and they said they weren’t going to have them in the stores. How is a customer to choose between the 4 and the Edge if you can’t have them side by side ( wait until a friend buys an Edge and take theirs for a spin, then go to the store and try out the 4?..really?)

Anyway, as TMo’s longest STANDING customer (if you’ve been with TMoUS since before May 1999, I invite you to claim that badge from me, and I will tip my hat to you while I’m handing it over), my only peeve is that updates for us tend to come out much later than for other carriers (as noted by the fact my GN2 and I are still waiting for 4.4.4….sigh).

    • superg05

why are you being so rude over a mostly hidden beta feature in developer setting that’s not common base level knowledge and is not fully working currently until android lollipop rolls out your suppose to be an android god you should know these things?

      • Android_God

My post was 2 days ago, let it go. But for LOL’s keep that anger close,so close, that you create a handle similar to the one true Android God

  • JB

It looks like this update made everything a bit snappier. Paticularly the recent apps and the the camera (it was painfully slow loading, shooting and accessing the gallery after taking a shot!) I haven’t got a chance to check out how the battery is fairing yet, though I’m sure to find out in short order. FWIW, the battery drain sort of normalized itself on day 3,but I still wasn’t thrilled about how fast it was going…

    • Android_God

Ya! I noticed that the other day after talking a shot! It seemed like the picture was loading painfully slow. I will check that out!! Thanks!

    • FliGuyRyan

      JB,
You are the most accurate with your info out of anyone here in the comments… I’ve been watching closely my usage compared to my Note 3, and the Note 4 has impressed me more than I thought it would.
Make sure you all are turning off all the T-Mobile diagnostics, reporting, etc… as well as other apps with these “features.” They’ll suck your battery faster than Dracula…

      • JB

Thanks! That T-Mobile diagnosis stuff is in the My Account app, right? What other apps have that feature so I know to disable those as well?

        • superg05

just turn off auto sync and you’ll double the battery life of any device

        • JB

I went through my settings and did all that before unplugging my charger this afternoon (at least with the ones I don’t need syncing, the rest I just set to once a day), as of right now 7hr and 30mins later, it’s at 64%…I’m satisfied with that. For now. I’m going to tweak thinks a bit more later, maybe run a Tasker to squeeze some more battery out of it!

  • skittle

Just joined the Note 4 club :) I am impressed! Now to go get that update.

    • taron19119

I’m happy love the note 4

    • Android_God

      Best Android phone ever!

  • Zeer

Anyone having issues with their note 4 notifications…. My note 4 does not notify me when I’m in a text message convo that I have a new message if im in the app.. I only get the notification when I’m at the main message screen or if the phone is locked and screen is off..

    • taron19119

      No

      • Zeer

Hi… So if you send a text let’s say to your mom…. And you have the convo with your mom open and she replies…. Do you get the notification that she replied or does the message just shows up?

        • taron19119

It just show up when the convo. Is closed if open it doesn’t show up

        • Zeer

Well that sucks….lets say if i have my phone to not turn on the screen until 5 mins…..and i have a text within that five mins and i dont check my phone….i wouldnt know if i had a message ….what i’ve noticed is that if the convo is open and the screen goes to sleep…the notification will sound.

        • taron19119

Yeah it does when the screen is off

    • SEBA

I know that if you texting someone and that persons window is open , you don’t get notification because you are looking at it. I like that they disabled notification while you texting.

      • Zeer

I checked and confirmed with my wife’s s5 and she’s running Android 4.4.2 and he phone makes the notification while her convo is open with me…

        • SEBA

Don’t you think thats annoying? I do. I’m getting notifications only when my conversation window is closed.

        • Zeer

Its very annoying and a stupid thing for them to do. Hopefully they fix this with an update.

        • superg05

so your annoyed that new lines popup in the conversation your currently staring at cause you don’t notice them appear without a notification you want it like a chat window

  • taron19119

I love the note 4 light years compared to the s3

  • paula

My note 4 gies in standby mode then will nit wake up. I literally have to remove the battery and replace and then i can cut it on until next time. Anyone else have this issue? Im super bummed bc i love this phone.

    • taron19119

      Trunk standby mode off

      • Bing

        How?

    • taron19119

How do I get my music from my s3 to my note 4 because the Bluetooth is not working wit my s3 to my note4.

    • soso25

      I have the same problem.

      • Paula

Did u fix it or are they sending a replacement

  • luis

Is there anybody from nj here that notice that note4 is making volte calls mines is it comes and goes

    • Android_God

      You can turn that off.

  • jovan

Mines is the same it comes and goes

  • taron19119

How do I get my music from my s3 to my note 4 because the Bluetooth is not working wit my s3 to my note4

    • T-Mobile Cares

The easiest way to perform this task would be to download, on a computer, Samsung Kies, run a backup of you media and music files from your S3 and restore them to your Note 4. Kies it’s awesome for making a complete impression (backup) of your devices as well, that way you do not lose any of your data from you phones. It is a free download on the Samsung website. I hope ths helps.

      • Robert

Easiest way is to use Samsung Smart Switch, it’s in the Play Store. I used it today and it worked effortlessly.

        • taron19119

Yeah I used smart switch and It works wonders

      • Android_God

Smart Switch not part of that advanced training, eh?

  • Victor

Note 4 is pretty sweet. I try with the iPhone 6 plus and it’s good but I kinda of missed customizing and features apple lacked.

    • Richard Yarrell

Iphone 6 plus is definitely useless

  • Lani

I wonder how the inventory in most Tmobile stores are for the Note4? Did most Tmobile stores get more than 4 of the Note4’s per store for launch day?

    • T-Mobile Cares

Depending on the market you are in, we have calculated the necessary devices expected to be sold. You should find, excluding unexpected sales demand, that each store had sufficient inventory to accommodate the needs of that location. In other words, go get your new Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Thank you for being a T-Mobile customer.

      • watkins

It was sold out nearly everywhere in Queens. I had to travel way out of my area into long island to find a tmobile that had it in black.

        • Lydia Ortiz-Lugo

Where in Long Island did you find it?
And was it sold out in Roosevelt Avenue? Thanks.

        • watkins

Went to the tmobile in new Hyde Park. Call before you head out.

        • Victor

Same here called over 30 stores in Queens and Brooklyn yesterday all sold out and if they had it was only in white. Manage to get a black one yesterday before a tmobile store closed

  • Guest

Where in Long Island did you find it? And was it sold out in Roosevelt Avenue?

  • Jon

Checked for an update and get the server has reached its daily download limit. Țry using Kies….

    • Android_God

It should pop up for you very soon. I got my Note 4 on Monday and the update arrived Thursday or Friday.

  • steve

Got the update, battery life still horrible.
Switched from the note 2 and same usage i can’t go an entire day without charging…
    this is really bad.
i started turning off apps to see if it changes anything but the major battery usage is from android system which includes so much..
    not happy…

    • Android_God

Did you go through and disable the various Samsung and tmobile apps and services you aren’t using?

      • steve

I have disabled all the apps I could find but can’t disable everything since I use a gear 2 watch….
So far no change, battery life is bad. Going to do some more testing to see what’s going on.

    • Mike Sage

Strange. My phone’s been off the charger for 10 hours now, listening to music for more than half that and I’m at 70%. I haven’t disabled anything except for Tmobile MyAccount and Tmobile TV, no battery saver apps, no power saving modes. If you haven’t already, maybe try a hard reset?

  • Bklynman

Glad I am waiting, before I jump,(original jump) Have not updated my Note 3,as of yet, battery lasts from early morning until, way past midnight. Then I don’t play games or watch movies on it,but do check email, play music, online with it etc. I have mostly bad account on this people getting updates then something stops working on people phones,HTC,Sammy,Nokia, even the mighty iphone, people have reported problems, with some updates. That’s why I never update my phones, I will wait until Jan.befoe I jump, by then hopefully all the bugs will be workout.

  • Victor

Battery life is so so. Compare to My iPhone 6 plus the battery on that blows the note 4 out the water. Same usage from 100% on the 6 plus 15-20% battery life drop in 3hours and the note I notice 25-35%. And that’s with the screen really dim on the note 4 closing apps every few mins. IPhone I barely close apps and the screen is way brighter. I haven’t got the update yet let’s see, definitely won’t be a deal breaker for me because I order a 2nd battery but hopefully the update fixes the problem

    • Eldric

everything that you said doesn’t even matter comparing the note 4 to a iphone 6 is dumb. I have good battery life with the notes 4 half a day of use and I’m still at 60% and with that said the iPhone 6 can’t do half of what the note 4 do

      • Victor

I said the battery on the 6 plus is better. I didn’t mention anything else lol you guys are so quick to jump down people’s throats lmfao

    • Richard Yarrell

Your iPhone 6 Plus isn’t even in the same ballpark as the Galaxy Note products in any manner even with a silly 2012 1080p screen.

      • Victor

Do u read? I said battery life on the 6 plus is the only thing I like lol

        • htowngod

The battery on iPhone 6 is trash and charges slow

      • htowngod

        Exactly iPhone 6 is booboo

    • htowngod

Iphone 6 is trash what phone still uses 8mp cam iPhone 6 smh they need to stop making phone

  • Vlad

Battery life is pretty good. Not sure what you doing or even if you have note 4.
Apps don’t close, all recently used stay I’m memory up to about 2.5 go used ram.
Battery life us closer to 4.5 – 5 hrs of screen on time. As that’s what counts, not how long phone stays on. Brightness on auto, reacts pretty fast to changes. Have about 400 apps, all working on full sync.
I’ve had worse battery stats on Galaxy S4, but that was on 0.7 inches less of display, less powerful processor and hd, not qhd display.
For such a beast it’s working pretty dam good.
Oh, charged it first time yesterday, from 0 to 100, without using it.
Was really impressed, 1 hour 40 minutes.

  • Ed60

I love my Note 4, it looks and performs great, the battery is still at 30% after 48 hours of light to moderate use, I received this 65 MB update but I can’t tell the difference because it happened while I am still setting up the phone, but the VoLTE doesn’t seem to work on that phone, I still have another note 3 that places VoLTE calls I can see it when I swipe the contact’s name to the right, but the note 4 just says call ?? I have LTE signals , and the VoLTE option is activated, I called T-Mobile tech. support they didn’t seem like having an answer but I made them to activate the Sim card that came with the phone instead of the one I was using in the note 3 with no issues just to make sure the card is not a bit old or so, but the new one didn’t make a difference, I also chatted online with a Samsung Rep that was a mess, the Rep. didn’t know the difference between VoLTE and wifi calling, anyways I was nice and completed the chat, of course not helpful, I believe they will send a patch or so to fix it

  • michael

The new update made my note 4 almost completely unresponsive and slugish. When I go to software update in settings (if I can) it tells me that “the operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way” then goes on to tell me to upgrade via pc or visit a customer service center.. Why T moble

  • Monte

I don’t know what everyone’s issue with the battery is. I use my phone all day for pics, notes, music, online, calls, etc. And I only charge when I get home because its about 20%. Also because I’m home, and it can just sit on the charger while I eat dinner. I have no problem with the battery life. This update had better not screw that up! I have had every Note since it’s beginings.

      Exactly mines is fine

  • My new note 4 camera fails, keypad non-responsive, battery lasts 6 hours with VERY LITTLE use! T-Mobile customer service stinks! OMG! This phone/phablet, sucks! Did I get a dud? Maybe. This is the second Samsung top of the line product I have had to return.
