T-Mobile Wants To Know If Your Phone Is Suddenly Losing Battery

For a few days now (post July 28th) a small group of T-Mobile customers, specifically T-Mobile G2 owners have been experiencing “massive battery drains” and after a few days of T-Mobile watching this develop they are now asking for your help. In order to tackle this situation quickly and aggressively they need some feedback…kind of like the who, the what and the how. So we’re going to hook you up with a link to the T-Mobile support thread at the end of this post and if you are suddenly experiencing rapid battery drain on your T-Mobile device since the very end of July then you should really click the link. In fact do that now.

  • holy god i might not need to quit t-mobile after all. they finally understand how awful signal & battery (which are obviously correlated because it’s constantly searching for signal and switching between 2g/3g/h+) is with the g2.

    • Vacawonder

i switched to sprint because of the connection always switching. bought an extended battery that helped but still couldnt live with 3g,2g,4g, no service switching all the time.

My sensation’s battery doesn’t last me more than 3 or 4 hours max.

  • Thanks for posting this! Hopefully this will let them know this is a real problem.

    Again, thanks!!

  • I’m on an N1 on T-Mobile and my battery life has suddenly gone through the floor in the past week or so. I thought it was either the Twitter app update that was pushed right around then or the G+ widget. I got rid of the Twitter widget and turned off all its update checking and it seems to have helped a fair amount. G+ doesn’t seem to make a difference. Still seems a bit battery hungry. The battery graph showed consistent drain rate all day with the vast majority being Cell Standby.

    • Anonymous

Yes !!!! Abso…lutely !!! Yes ! I’m not the only one ! Holy Mackerel…..independent corroboration that something funky is afoot.  I even turned off Tweetdeck, everything but weather updates…..and STILL “Cell Standby” is coming up crunching the electrons.

    • I think it was the Twitter app. Disabling all updates on it and trashing the widget took me from 6% battery at 6pm to 60% battery at midnight! The only other thing I did was disable Huddle notifications in G+, and I’ve had G+ running for almost a month. This started almost precisely when I updated the Twitter app.

Don’t most phones come with Twitter pre-loaded? Perhaps it’s set to auto-update and the latest version is bad.

My G2 in the past 2 days has gotten significatly better battery life. Not sure how that could have happened. I have not changed a thing.

My battery life with my G2 has never been all that great, but I haven’t noticed any change in battery drain recently. (Except when I flashed the Pyromod ROM, that thing was horrible on the battery, I was losing about 1% a minute without even touching the phone. I’m currently running one of the latest Cyanogen nightlies, thinking about flashing MIUI this weekend.)

I’ve got a pretty heavily modified device, so I presume that my battery issues are the result of my modfications. (Overclocking, multiple widgets and background services constantly running etc.) I deal with it by having four batteries, and I change them out as necessary and keep them all charged up between the work charger and the home charger.)

Smartphones are hard on batteries, personally I think that’s just the way it is. However, I realize that a number of people have been experiencing battery drain that is abnormal, and I applaud T-Mobile for reaching out to its customers and trying to resolve the issue instead of just pretending like nothing is wrong.

About dang time they started doing something about this other than telling people to turn off 3G.  Like that is an acceptable solution

    • Farhan

Had the same problem with my HD2 overheating and battery dying in 3-4 hours. Happened for months because I don’t get a proper data signal in my apartment. Phone would keep switching from 3g to Edge to 3g to no signal over and over again overheating the battery and draining it.

Had to remove data from my plan to fix the problem. Not the option I wanted to take but after 4 months had no choice. I even wrote TmoNews and email about it. Glad to see things like this are being addressed.

      • Anonymous

You really think they’re addressing this ? Nahhhh…don’t believe it. I’ve beaten up TMo about their shoddy coverage fields ( don’t believe that nice dark green and dark fuschia map you see on the website ….).

And let me tell you something about their towers…..when there’s another AT&T tower in the area…it’s usually STRONGER. As much as I hate to say it, for some reason, TMo towers NEVER put out the same amount of signal as AT&T’s do. Why would I attach to an AT&T tower that’s almost a mile away on EDGE, and not be able to connect to a TMo tower that ( supposedly ) has HSPA+ that’s a little more than 1/2 a mile away ( this is line of sight with regards to both ).

I end up having to put my phone  (N1) on WCDMA-Only to get decent data rates ( not great, they still don’t have anywhere near the speeds in my part of SoFla as they do in other places ). For instance, why is HSPA+ better in all of Ft. Lauderdale, but once you cross into Palm Beach or down into Miami, it all goes kaput. What’s up with that ?

Seems all the battery draining problems have one thing in common… Android!!

    • Anonymous

You know you can get a spare battery on Ebay for like fifteen bucks?

      • Anonymous

Been had a spare battery directly from HTC. Same stuff. Android has weak power management.

This used to happen to me once I jailbroke my iPhone 3G. But once I relocked it, draining went away.

        • Anonymous

Meh, maybe. I’m not saying you’re wrong, everyone’s subjective experiences with smartphones are valid, but I haven’t had the same experience. I’ve never owned an iPhone, but I’ve had plenty of Blackberries and a couple of Winmo phones, and all of them have had what some might consider to be battery life problems.
The last Blackberry I owned before I made the jump to Android was the Blackberry Flip (remember that distaster?) that thing didn’t make it two hours before I was swapping batteries. (Lol, of course that was hardly the biggest problem with it, the constant freezing, rebooting and ever present lag were much more obnoxious then any battery issues it was experiencing)

It seems to me like people want it all from their smartphones. They want a big, bright screen, they want a slender device that is comfortable in the hand and fits easily in the pocket, they want to have all sorts of programs running simultaneously, they want wifi, GPS, all the bells and whistles, and they want to battery to last all day without a charge. Now, with the understanding the the phenomena described above seems to be a situation that is out of the ordinary and derserving of additional scrutiny, I find that even though I’m generally firmly on the side of the consumer in most situations, when it comes to issues around portable electronics and battery life issues, I tend to side with the manufacturers and service providers. There’s just not a lot they can do besides equipping phones with larger batteries, which would present a whole different set of problems. (Size and additional cost.)

With respect to Android, there are a few things people can do which will dramatically extend their battery life. The biggest thing is to turn down the screen brightness, (I presume you already know this, but some people might now) as the screen backlight is the single biggest source of battery drain on the device. Also shutting off wifi unless its in use can be helpful, and of course you can disable auto-sync and mobile data for additional battery performance enhancement. If you’re rooted, (which if you own a Nexus I assume you probably are) then of course you can mess around with CPU governor profiles, and you can also try Juice Defender (I liked the battery enhancement I got from Juice Defender, but I wasn’t crazy about having to wait for mobile data to turn back on every time I unlocked the device, so I quit using it.)

Like I said earlier though, what I do is just carry around a few spare batteries and I keep a spare charger at work. (I also have my CPU governor set to undervolt the device when it’s not in use) That does it for me, and if I use up two batteries during the course of a day, it’s no big deal. I’ve seen the 2430 mAH Mugen batteries, and I’ve heard good things about them, but of course then you have to deal with the device being rather more bulky, and it just doesn’t strike me as being worth it. But that’s just my own personal preference.

both devices that you have listed only run on T-mobile’s EDGE (or 2G) network and that seems to be the fix for most people, to switch their 3G/4G phones to 2G.  Since your phones are already 2G only you would not see the problem with them.

I just got my sensation a couple of days ago, I will have to see, but my battery seems fine so far.  I wore it out the first day I got it setting things up, but today seems fine.  It been on my desk most of the day just light texting and checking email, looks like I have about 45% life left.

  • TMoFan

This happened to me once with my G2. I went from 90% to 15% in eight hours on standby. Fortunately this only happened that one time but I’ve been keeping my eye on it.

  • ihatefanboys

is it coincidence this “problem” started after it was announced that the G2 was getting gingerbread, and that the way to get it was to repeatedly click “system updates”…i think its partially a bunch of hard up people trying desperately to get the update…but i did hear something about phones waiting for the update constantly pinging the server , or something, to see if an update was available.

come on people dont u seem to get it the at&t/t-mobile merger is going threw slowly but surely under our noses….this is why i say that, ive been with Tmo for 7yrs never had a problem with them, loved their customer service! (ive owned a total of 15 Tmo cell phone devices) but heres what ive notice…, (1)battery drain issues, (2)constant toggle from edge & 4g, (3)customer service-have to go threw the promps, cant interupt no more, (4)migrating fees for changing a plan that doesnt work for you (migrating fee is the same as ETF) WTF

Im so disapointed with Tmo & how theyre letting their customers down…..

the fast battery drainage is do to the toggleling of service supposedly do to some minor changes with their cell towers via the merger & now their customer service department turned to be just like at&t- no help at all thats why they didnt get the JDPowerAss award in which is sad……& now if youve notice that the plan you have doesnt work for you & since your under contract with that plan in order to switch plans you now have to pay a migration fee which is the same as the ETF, why would some one pay $200 to terminate one contract to then go under another contract with the same company, it just doesnt make sence. youll be better of terminating it & go unlimited under pre paid (no contract) HELLOOOOOOO ppl wake up!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

While I agree with your sentiment about migration fees, I believe there are other threads where this subject is discussed in detail, it might be helpful to voice your concerns in one of those threads :)

    • Anonymous

Migration Fee only applies to changing to a VALUE plan if you are still under prior contract.  You can change to one of the CLASSIC plans without migration fee if your current plan doesn’t suit you.  To argue that T-Mobile is forcing you to pay a migration fee for a plan change is ludacris at best.  If you would understand what the VALUE plans are then you might not be arguing…. but then again maybe you would be anyway.  The VALUE plans give you a lower than normal price plan in exchange for a loss of handset subsidy (no more discounts/full price phones) and the fact that you are under contract most likely means that you received some sort of subsidy for your current phone and therefore must complete the terms of you contract (by paying back the subsidy of the device in a 24 month contract) before switching to the new plan scheme.

I agree about the speaker issue…Mine is practically non-existant!

      • Didn’t those fools at HTC check the HTC SENSATION for its  speaker sound problem?

I was calling  AMEX customer service, the rep put me on hold, so I put it on speaker to wait for the rep, after 15 mins, I got a call back from the rep saying I wasn’t responding to her earlier. I didn’t even  know she had to hang up on me and heared nothing from her on speaker.

ome on people, 2 minutes of research will debunk the gamil/gmaps/tweetdeck updates. it is NOT limited to the G2, it effectsall the HSPA phones and coincides with a T-Mobile HSPA network upgrade rollout.  the fix is to switch your phone to 2G only for data. go to the T-Mobile forums and forally register your problem.  it needs to escalated beyond a perceived G2 issue.

Check for crappy apps as well like heytell, that thing sucked my battery dry faster than any app I have ever seen. But this issue does seem like a network issue. I did a speed test and 11 down 3 up so who knows? Is this the price of speedy data cause my friends Verizon 4 g eats batteries for lunch and dinner.

Google maps latest update has caused severe battery drain. Try uninstalling google maps and uncheck auto update in the market.

I haven’t noticed any probs with my G2 after update.  Like some of the comments already mentioned some apps will drain your battery pretty quick.  Also, check your settings.

    • Really? Not in this case. If you have followed this saga, you would know that when the users switch from the HSPA+ netowrk to the 2G network, battery life returns to normal.

      • Karl

        Ditto!
The only way to get back to ~4ma drain in my phone is to set (fix) my HTC HD2 to use only 2G. If I turn on 3g, battery consumptions rises to ~110ma on idle!
Even if I turn OFF GPS, Data, Wifi and just leave the phone enabled, current still at ~110ma.
If I enable  “Airplane Mode”, battery drain drops again to around ~2ma.
So, end of story. T-Mobile has a Nation Wide “Cell Channel Stanby” issue on their network.
Verified with a couple of friend here in my area (San Juan, Puerto Rico), that also have the same issue.

So far, rommy 0515 has had the best point for conserving your battery. I use “setcpu” as well as “setvsel” on my Motorola Defy and have the processor clocked all the way down to 300 MHZ when the battery temp goes up to 50 degrees celsius or when i’m not using the phone, otherwise I run it at 1.2 GHZ, I also have CM7 flashed and have the windows animations and transitions turned off. It helps save battery life and makes the phone more snappy. All the bloatware is gone, especially Motoblur. I used to use “screeble pro” ,but it started having slight issues. Now I use “zmooth pro” which is a lot better. It lets you avoid using your back, menu, and home buttons, as well as it lets you time out the phone instantly by drawing an uppercase “N” on a small portion of the screen, but your phone does have to be rooted. The data, wifi, autosync, and GPS are all turned off until I need them, using “my settings pro” turns them on with one or two button touches and it’s not a widget. Widgets kill battery life as well. I limited myself to four widgets alone. I also force stopped Maps, Market, and Browser. Most of my apps are moved to my SD card(minus the ones with widgets). All of this combined helped my battery life go from 1 day moderate usage to two full days moderate usage. I hope this helps anyone interested.

One other thing, “cache mate” is quite useful, it clears all your caches and helps make space and improve performance by freeing up memory. You need root to use it though.

Im on Wifi at my house most the time so the battery drain hasn’t been an issue unless I travel around town. Also im rooted with the Glacier and flashed the newest radio and that seemed to help. But when im off Wifi it cycles from 4g to 3g to Edge and then no coverage.

I noticed a severe battery drain about a week ago.  I have a samsung vibrant and at first I thought that the new battery I put in, hadn’t charged correctly.  Then today I placed a new battery in the phone, I used navigation for approximately 10 mins and the phone drained and turned off.  I charged it for approx 20 mins, and it showed it was at 78% but again, it quickly turned off within 10 mins of use.  the phone also appeared to be hot.

I have an HTC Sensation, which is not even a month old.  The battery used to last all day (18+ hours) with moderate use.  For the past week, I am lucky if I get 10 hours out of it with very little use when HSPA+ is active.

Have uninstalled all applications and updates.  No dice.

    • TweetMo

Same here, cept I never had 18+ hours to begin with. Maybe 12… maybe.

The Sensation for me has always massively drained the battery.  I love the phone but the battery is horrible.  I have to have chargers wherever I go.  I turned wifi off, kill all apps with the stock app manager and lucky to get through 6pm with moderate use.

Htc is awful with battery life this is nothing new.

  • It’s not just the latest update of Google Maps.  Check the reviews in Android Market.  Maps has been a known battery drainer ever since version 5.4 a few months ago.  It keeps turning on the GPS in the background even with Latitude and other location-related stuff disabled.  I often have to force-close it 5 or 10 times because it keeps restarting.

i know this off topic, but does anyone know if wifi calling works on prepaid plans (monthhy 4g)?

severe battery drain on my Nokia 6133 for the past week!  I would charge it at night and within two hours the next morning it was lifeless.  I have a back-up phone to use and hope it won’t happen with that one as well. Hope they get the problem fixed REAL soon!

Mytouch 4g. My battery today dropped 45% after about 3hrs of standby time, just checking emails once. It’s also been extremely sluggish the pass couple of days, even with restarting the phone to clear the memory. I’ve checked running applications and Maps has been running in the background taking up a nice chunk of my memory, as well as constantly connecting with the network. Just uninstalled and will see how the battery life is, but already the phone is much more responsive. Anyone with the latest Google Map update check to see if it’s running in the background for you.

If I open Gmaps it always stays running in the background until I force close it or reboot my phone. Nothing set to auto like check in or latitude. Nexus S, 2.3.4.. I’ve kept an eye on my battery life with it running and without it running. As far as I can tell there’s no difference in drainage

I have noticed over the last week or so that my service has been extremely inconsistent. (no battery drain associated with this particular problem) One hour things load fine and the next hour I can’t even load the simplest of websites. Hope it all gets sorted out, whatever’s going on.

      • Supa_Steve

I have opened and closed the application (not forced closed) since uninstalling v 5.8.0 this morning and it does not stay running in the background. Whatever google did to the newest version they have some sort or location tracking that’s constantly running in the background as opposed to when you just have the app opened. My phone has been runnimg just fine so far since ditching v5.8.0. Also with the latest version I noticed that it would bug out/freeze up if I’m in maps and activate tje navigation from there. This problem also stopped since going back to what was imstalled on the phone originally.

    This explains a lot.

  • I recently bought an 1800mAh Extended Battery for my G2 on ebay.  It is a higher capacity battery but still fits in the existing battery compartment without needing a bumped out battery door.  I can take my phone off the charger at about 8AM and by midnight it is just getting down under where the battery icon turns yellow.  That is with moderate usage.  I would wait until they fix the battery drain issue first though.  :-)

It’s not just G2 owners. It’s got something to do with their data network. I’ve got a Nexus One, and I’m having serious issues. If I turn data off completely, the phone will only lose 20% of it’s battery in a day, instead of die completely in five hours. I normally will get at least 24 hours on a full charge with both 3G and syncing turned on.

I spend a lot of time in rural areas installing equipment in factories. Whenever I’m in an area where I don’t get data coverage, the phone will die within a few hours because it keeps looking for the network, just like it is now. So I’ve learned to just turn data off in those situations and it won’t die on me.Except the thing is, I’m not out in the boonies right now. I’m in the middle of Chicago. I know it’s not the battery because it’s fine with data off. T-Mobile’s initial response was that it was my battery. My wife’s G1 has also been dying within 5 hours for the past few days as well and my boss’s blackberry is draining quickly too. They’re both on T-Mo. Something’s up. They must have rolled some sort of ridiculous update out to their towers that’s screwing everything up.

I have a nexus 1 and i also noticed this significant battery loss since fie days ago. I will try to turn data off and see what happens

  • My wife and I our Tmobile phones are having massive battery drains. My wife has a vanilla G2 w/ froyo, I have a vibrant with Bionix V by Team Whiskey. We both have wanted to buy batteries because we thought that my vibrant battery had finally drained out. After reading this, I won’t be buying a new battery for the Mr.s G2. Tmobile I have much faith in you, but just so you know, I’m leaving your asses with no etf if ATT gets their dirty hands on you! Stay kraut!

I refuse to use the new M3 radio as it’s been a battery drain ever since its leaked release. I haven’t had any battery drain on CM7 nightly 195 with the M2 radio. Still on the old Market.

I have a MT4G with CM7, and have recently noticed the battery draining quicker. There have been more and more issues with freezing, and the screen not shutting down. I’ve had to take the battery out twice in the last week because of freezing issues. I’ve never had these issues before.

    • Hawks7897

I’ve also been having A LOT of problems with the 4G, as it keeps dropping to EDGE. It seems like I get EDGE more often than 4G lately.

G2X battery killing off like crazy.  I tried to force it to 2G only mode, disabled active sync and LBS to see it that helped but it didn’t.

My G2 seems to have fixed itself regarding the massive battery drain it was experiencing…. I downloaded the latest Gingerbread update yesterday.  Since then it’s  holding power.  Went to bed wiithout charging it on purposed to see if it would hold a charge.  It had 89% at 11:45 p.m. It now has 80% at approx. 7:00.

I have a G2 and have also had sudden battery drain…yesterday was a prime example…usually an all night charge lasts about 24 hours, I was in the red midday yesterday.  Over the last few weeks, our entire family has also been experiencing dropped calls much more frequently than usual, in areas that we never lost calls before…like at home!

    • chris

I’m having the exact same problems with my G2.  I’ve also noticed a lot of switching from 4 bars (on HSPA+) to no data connection at all, then switching back to 4 bars – without even moving the phone.  Every other call seems to drop regardless of whether I’m inside or outside – and all of my calls are within the Metro-Atlanta area where the coverage maps show excellent coverage.

  • hangdogdaddy38

My wife seems to think that it is the new Android Market app. She said when she took it off and went back to the old app her battery stopped draining. But then it could have nothing to do with it as well.

    • Bob Bertolasi

Interestingly enough, I thought that I was seeing a fast drain also but had not reactivated the Startup Auditor app since upgrading my G2x to Gingerbread.   Did so in due course and then the battery drain subsided.   Startup Auditor is set to shut down Android Market app at start up and everytime it tries to check for updates (continuous monitoring).   I had noticed that the market app in Gingerbread seemed to be using more of the phone battery (Norton’s monitor function).

I have a Samsung Vibrant, newest Market app, and my battery actually seems to be better. Running Bionix NextGen 2 by the way. Not sure if its because of the network or app. Either way, I’m happy.

    • Mike Shaw

My SGS will only hold a charge through the day if its plugged in. I got a replacement through insurance because my last one i cracked the screen two months ago. So the battery is the newer one. If i use the phone heavily IE internet for more than an hour while my wife shops then it will completely die.

    • Hawks7897

I live in Reno, work in Sparks, and have found 4G to be extremely inconsistent in the area where I work, I wonder if my battery drain could be caused from the signal constantly switching from 4G to EDGE, especially once I log on to the internet?

  • Rimasplace

I charge my phone all night and only lasts until about 5 pm. It’s very inconvenient to have to wait for it to charge up again. I have to leave my phone while it’s recharging and I miss calls. I reported it to my local tmobile store but they acted as if i was doing something wrong. I want a new phone.

  • Anonymous

Yes. This is happening on my roommates Blackberry bold 9780. I don’t think this is an android problem. My other roommates galaxy s 4g is fine.

No 3G in our area. So it’s definitely not solved by being on edge.

  • Donnie

I have a HTC G2, I noticed massive battery drain towards the end of july, with constant use at work my battery used to last until i got home from work with about 20% battery left, now i only use it to check time and set alarms and it dies before i leave for home, within 30 minutes of being off a charger my battery drops to 79% charge with zero use. My friend has a My Touch Fender she uses on Wal-Mart Family Mobile and her battery doesnt even last the night anymore (she doesnt have internet on hers). I’m in a 4G area but get knocked to edge at home because of trees. I dont seem to have any issues on my G-Slate, battery is usually 76% by the time i get home from work which is the norm. Once my phone dies (is at zero battery) it wont start back up til I charge it. My husbands MyTouch 4G seems to not be affected.

I was having this problem… I posted my issue on TMO’s site and a couple days later the problem went away.  Not sure if they did anything or not, but my battery life is much improved now.

I don’t know about battery, but my coverage has gone downhill fast.  i now need to go outside to get coverage at my house.  Never did before.

  • JayeJaye98

Idk if this will work for everyone but it worked well for me! I usually just keep my wifi connected. It worked for my MT3GS && its working for my Thunderbolt(I just got it & my battery is waaaaayyyyyy better than some of those who had it before me)!

  • bmcgov

The issue seems to have been resolved, for me at least.  I had data set to 2G only as a temporary fix, but I switched back to using 3/4G when I unplugged this morning and my battery was still at 88% at 7pm.  I’m in Portland, OR.

This was happening on my HTC G2 TMobile phone right around that time. It was occurring for about a week or so in the NW suburbs of Chicago.  Not sure if I was in a 2G, 3G or 4G area (never occurred to me to note this for battery drain). I powered the phone off, took out the battery and restarted it to see if that helped.  It didn’t.  After a few days I remembered that I had about 4-5 app updates that I had been putting off. I went ahead and updated the apps.  This could be a coincidental timing thing, but it seemed like the battery drain stopped afterwards.

yes – my htc g2 was just updated with the new OS and the battery drains very quickly and takes longer than it used to to re-charge.  it shows that the display uses 54% of the battery – i set the display to low and set the time out to less than a minute that doesn’t help at all

I have to charge my battery at least twice a day. For example today, I unplugged my phone at 8:40 a.m. after it had been charging all night and it just died at 4:37 p.m.

It is now March 30, 2012, and for the past month or so, my MyTouch suddenly crashes and I lose all battery power. Sometimes the battery power comes back fully, sometimes partially, and sometimes not at all. It can happen at any time, texting, using an app, but it hasn’t happened during a phone call yet. I have a MyTouch. It is driving me nuts. I ordered a new phone and, of course, they did not include a battery. What a pain in the ass.
