Samsung Hercules Unveiled For T-Mobile, Galaxy S 2 Variant Confirmed

The vaunted Samsung Hercules is rumored to be T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ 42Mbps device and if nothing else about the device grabs your attention, that fact alone should. Up until this point it’s look, style, color and pretty much everything else has been a guessing game. Will it or won’t it be a Samsung Galaxy S 2 model or variant for T-Mobile has been a question we’ve been asking ourselves almost daily since word first came down that this device existed back in May with the leaked 2011 roadmap.

Well now we’ve got pics and what we consider to be pretty concrete evidence that this is in fact a Galaxy S 2 model since it says Galaxy S 2 on the backplate of the phone. That’s a dead giveaway if we have anything to say about it. Unfortunately none of these images shows off a lot about the phone including the Touchwiz Interface that is undoubtedly running over Android which we are so eager to see. We’ve got three pics for you along with a leaked shot that comes courtesy of Pocket Now this morning which shows the front of the Hercules which matches up quite nicely with our own shot of the front side.

So what do we know about it? Our ninja told us we are definitely looking at a 4.5″ inch display and the phone is fast, fast and fast. Netflix is preinstalled thankfully and we’re told it works like a charm. The messaging, email and calendar app are amazing and much better than the stock Google offerings.

That’s all for now but we know the phone is in the wild so let’s all cross our fingers for a much more in depth look at the Samsung Hercules sometime soon!

      I’m really hoping that’s a metal cover

      • None

Samsung loves their plastic (and creaky) battery covers.  It is the trade-off for a beautiful screen, IMO.

I have to admit Samsung has really stepped up since the Galaxy S line. im very pleased and impressed with the hardware !!!

  • I paid $22.85 for an iPhone 4-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com

You sir are an idiot, anyone updating there phone knows it erases everything. I used that same link to put gb on my phone and had no problems. And because I was smart and backed everything up, the factory reset didn’t matter.

  • Chrisangel13

Ok eff the nexus 3!! i’m tired of waiting to upgrade, i’ve had the Samsung Behold for over 2 years now! Terrible specs and UI but that was Samsung’s first attempt at a feature phone. Glad to see how far along they’ve come since then, with the Galaxy S2 literally blasting every other phone out of the water. This will be my next phone and although i highly doubt i will be unsatisfied, i can always sell it and get something better if need be.

    • The ATL Guy

Have had phones with led notification and without it. Comment was made in Jest, with a side of sarcasm. No matter how great a phone specs and performance we have people who try to find some flaw. Just my opinion. By the way this response was sent from my Lego Phone.

So many excited comments about this phone and I don’t blame them. I however could not wait for a phone that does not even have a release date yet and went with the HTC Sensation. So far I love it. I was very excited about the Galaxy S II phones but they just took too long. Also, am I the only one out there that thinks 4.5″ is just too much? I love the 4.3″ that I have now but even I think that should be max for a PHONE. I’ve held a 4.5″ in my hand and it just doesn’t feel all that comfortable. Who else wishes they were releasing this same phone but in somewhat of a small package/screen size? I mean this is still a phone, not a tablet, after all.

    • Anonymous

I don’t mind if they go down in size as long as they don’t go under 4.3″ cuz then it would be too small 4.3 or 4.5 I’m ok but after 4.5 too big I was kinda skeptic about the 4.5 but I’m ok now

  • Anonymous

Is this confirmed 42mbps HSPA+? Some sites are saying only 24mbps?

ah i confused category 24 HSDPA with the mbp speed, looks awesome.  but is this phone gonna get proper support from samsung? alot of vibrant owners still on 2.1 or 2.2. still its a sexy phone. looks like a nexus s gigantisized!

What a lucky vibrant owner I went through 6 of them and it was an ordeal putting up with the issues. Its not like I installed boat loads of apps and rooted but it failed on me doing basic things like a phone call or a text message or youtube. Good luck if you get a Hercules maybe theyve worked out the kinks.

That’s kind of bull. The front doesn’t look like other Galaxy S IIs. I loved the physical home button feature, so it’s a good thing I don’t have T-Mobile.

Then what are you doing here? The Samsung Captivate didn’t have the front look of the Galaxy S either.

Its the same story as the original Galaxy S.  How are you surprised?  I’d almost guarantee none of the US carriers will have the physical home button.

APQ8060 by Qualcomm. Same processor in the Hp Touchpad. Same Adreno 220 chip in the Sensation and EVO 3D. Not impressed.

      • that’s not confirmed.  The processor is all up in the air at this point some say the Exynos, some say the 1.2 dual core Snapdragon, some say the 1.5 dual core Snapdragon.  It could go in any of those directions right now.

        • Jeffery Richards737

The processor in the Sensation is a native 1.5…HTC downclocked it (my guess would be for battery life?)

I wonder how much bigger (wider/taller) than the original G S II the body of this is?  And in what other ways it differs?
It will be interesting to see how all the USA carriers versions compare when all is revealed — next month.
Next month should be exciting!  well…as exciting as a phone can be, anyway ;)

  • Havoktek

Damn, I expected more. I guess I’m gonna keep rockin’ this G2X with some Faux ROM goodness, and let my daughter roll with my old Vibrant.
I was afraid that the US variant would give up something in an effort for carrier separation/identity.
Still love ya Sammy thou’ no hate, may look into the imported unlocked unit.

Thank you Zeus for sending Hercules down to earth to help us mortals with 42 Mbps of godness.

Cool… I wonder if the GPS works and whether or not it will ever get updated like it’s predecessor. Most likely not. I can’t wait to leave this company.

Dude, who cares if they update their stock crap. That is exactly why there is CyanogenMod and Team Whiskey. After my Galaxy S bricked itself twice, all on its own, I said the hell with it and rooted, flashed and tweaked it. I will never go back to stock again. Samsung can keep their crappy updates. I am just looking at the hardware and I have to say that this looks impressive.

      • Ryan

I’ve never stayed with stock either, but TW won’t create a Gingerbread rom without an official leak/release from Samsung or T-Mobile. If they never release or leak one, we’ll be stuck with Froyo forever, unless of course you use one of the buggy Ginberbread roms.

    • Gerardo Gonzalez

The GPS was fixed in Vibrant4G and I haven’t heard of any other issue with GPS after the Galaxy S

This phone is kinda fugly compared to the Euro GS2…I mean I saw the Euro GS2 yesterday and practically had a heart attack because it was so gorgeous. I looked at these photos and it feels like a huge let down on style. Why did you have to change it T-mo…Why???

    • LurkR

I think this version looks better imho i hated the big home button on the og GS2.

      • Meh

Really?? I mean I don’t mind the button there or not there but you have to admit the overall composition of the euro version is much slicker.

Curved edges, Nexus S speaker grill, no home button (biggest plus), less boxy.

This is way better then the Euro version imo

  • Thereugo67

I think I will either try this or definetly the NEXUS PRIME, I wanna have a screen that I can use in the sunlight without wallking in the shade to see what I’m doing. I know for a fact the PRIME will get up dates quick if it’s the NEXUS PRIME, just hold out til that hits.

  • Euro phone is more sexy

  • Etherealremnant

Beautiful phone but plastic plus Qualcomm APQ8060 = FAIL!

So much promise with an Exynos but nope.

  • Gerardo Gonzalez

Does the back cover looks like metal?

  • jigglypuff

Kind of has the nexus s look.

Still enjoying my Sensation and with full root upcoming (kinda have temp/perma root already) it will be tough to let go of. Still need to see more actual specs and final press release images before even thinking of picking this up. Like the 42Mbps but 800×480 on a 4.5″ screen is NOT a good thing. Also there were rumors of it having AT&T bands as well, but it may end up like the G2X, all smoke and mirrors and then no AT&T bands. Too many questions right now. Sammy needs to speak up, since we know T-Mobile won’t mention anything until right before it’s released.

  • LurkR

Man so this or the new nexus!?…… has there been any new news on the new nexus LOL…

This is obviously the Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S2 but how do we know it’s definitely the Hercules?  I know the article says it is, but there is nothing visually to say this.

Dang I was hoping the design would have stayed the same as the EUR version. Guess I’ll have to see how this unfolds as far as specific details. Still not bad lookin but EUR version seems sexier……to me anyway.

  • Tatankisi

This is so rediculous. That’s why I respect Apple. They will never let other companies mess with design. Why on earth would Samsung let carriers change their products?? Galaxy S II took it to the next level by increasing the screen size from 4″ in the original, to 4.3″ and now comes T-mobile and decided that 4.5″ is what everyone “really” wants. The fact is, not everyone likes a phone that big. A 4″ screen is a quite confortable size and pretty much becoming the standard in smart phones. But this??? …. I mean, I know there are people out there that couldn’t care, but point here is that, when you let carries redesign your product by changing its look and adding all sorts of bloatware, they’re creating a completely different product. The Galaxy S II looks gorgeous in its promo website. It has sold millions in all the difeferent countries where available and part of that success is because it retained its original design.

    • really? if you dont like it then dont buy it, and stop crying tmo has been redesigning and working with oems for most of its phones for years so its really no surprise, I honestly think is a smart move for tmo, because it doesnt make sense to have for 4.3in phones like verizon, it just confuses consumers which one to get, and for the people that are looking for that 4.5 they will all come over to tmo for it

      • Tatankisi

Sure, if your looking for a 4.5″ screen phone, this will be your ONLY option and “they all will come over to tmo for it” ……. your comment is more ridiculous than the phone itself.

forget CM7 how about CM8 with Icecream goodness and more hack feature.

  • Hardware sounds good especially the diplay!  4.5″ should be the standard for a smartphone without a physical keyboard!  Now all you need to do is make a windows phone 7.5 variant and you will have a good phone that I would actually buy!

  • ……4.5″, your pushing it. That’s like hybrid of a smartphone/tablet. Drop that down to a 4.3, metal unibody and we may have a deal.

    • Anonymous

If you take this phone down to 4.3 it’s going to compete too closely with the HTC Sensation.  I think T-mo’s plan is to basically have a wide range of devices available so customers can pick and choose.  Besides all the budget phones we have the 3.7inch Mytouch 4g, 3.7inch with keyboard Mytouch 4g slide, 4inch with Galaxy S 4g, 4inch with stock android G2x, 4.3 inch Sensation and now 4.5inch Hercules.

This doesn’t include the 4inch stock android Nexus S, the potentially 4inch HTC Ruby the fact that iphone 5 may show up this fall.

I don’t think T-mobile’s phone models have EVER looked this diverse and desirable.

I have no interest in any Samsung product, or something with a screen this size. I just received a new G2X with gingerbread installed and it works beautifully, the build is beautiful, and it doesn’t look and feel cheap…you know, like a Samsung.

    • the gx2 is still buggy with 2.3, the screen is still unresponsive, random reset, and takes for ever to place a call, mad freezes

      • Anonymous

NO…don’t you mean SOME of the G2X phones are still buggy? Sure there are people still having problems, but not all are. I had the first release G2X and returned it because of screen leakage, but otherwise, it was flawless in performance. But since TMO offered me a FREE upgrade with GB already installed, I thought why not see how it’s performing. I have a Nexus One with 2.3.4, and a Nokia E7, so I wasn’t hard up for a device. I have to say, however, that my G2X has been flawless and picky ol me is very impressed thus far.  I’m pretty sure there are others who feel the same way about theirs. Every device manufactured will see a few lemons in it’s ranks, some more than others.

i love my g2x.  ppl may think im crazy but i feel that it is the best phone in America, but…this phone is better tomnewtn.  it is the best phone right now. it’s just not released over here yet. it will be phone of the year.

side note: can you imagine the buzz around tmobile if they had released the g2x bug free? then the sensation, then this?

Yes yes, it has better specs, I’ve been aware of it since it first came to notice by all the tech blogs. That isn’t in dispute. It’s really as simple as I stated it. I just don’t like Sammy’s cheap builds and I don’t like UI’s skinned over Android. It doesn’t matter what latest greatest gizmo we buy, something will one up it in short order and these companies are loving our inability to be content with a solid functional device for any length of time. I’ve been using my Nexus One since day 1 it was released. It has a couple of quirks but they do not diminish the utility and productivity of the device. It’s a workhorse and it now has a battery life I’ve been utterly amazed at since I installed Android 2.3.4 on it. They offered the G2X for free and locked me into my loyalty plan for a couple more years. If the G2X keeps on impressing me like it has been, it’s a keeper, and a nice addition to my N1 and Nokia E7 (pentaband) slider. I know the Sammy is more powerful and yet I do not care. And then something else will be, and something else, and….   I think what I decided years ago was that I would shop for something I knew I could appreciate and be content with for a reasonable term.  Otherwise, we can go crazy and broke trying to keep up. If it’s a hobby and you’re a tech enthusiast, then I suppose that is different. I say enjoy the Samsung if it floats your boat. It just doesn’t float mine.

i actually agree with most of what you said that is why i have a g2x (stock) and i will quit with the phone madness after i buy the nexus 3. i certainly prefer no skin on my phone.

in response to your other comment: i am waiting for tmonews to do a follow up article on that issue of g2x customers waiting for the bug fix and did it actually work for anyone.  I did have a slightly buggy phone.  it didnt freeze that much but it did reboot randomly about once every 4/5 days.(far cry from the horror stories i read on this site)  but so far so good with the gingerbread update for me. hope it stays that way

I remember some Nexus One owners had similar troubles at first. So you never know how these things will turn out. On the point of a Nexus 3, you beat me to the punch! I am very interested in seeing how this develops, what 3g bands, etc. I was disappointed when the Nexus S was built by Sammy, etc so passed on it, but rumors about the Nexus 3 have me interested once more. I love unlocked, no bloat phones. The G2x is my exception, but alas, a free one. (well done TMO retention).

and I am waiting to see what the fall out of the Gingerbread update to the G2X will be. Some are still having issues, but not sure if they had bad update installs, need to factory reset, or bad devices. I just know that the one preloaded and sent me by TMO is working flawlessly for now. I have 20 days.

Your obviously jealous!  You may not like Samsung phones, but the Galaxy S2 (any version) s%&*s on the LG G2X and any other LG handset on the market currently.  Not just my personal opinion, but a fact which has been stated by all the major Android publications.  LG is a bit player in the high-end handset game, Samsung a giant.

I know you are correct….about the specs and performance but I could care less since I don’t like the build of Samsungs phones, AND I do not like UIs skinned over Android.  I am amazed that you would care so much that I personally do not care for Samsung. I am not jealous, and why the hell would I be? I am happy with the devices I have. I like the device I spend my good money on to exude a professional build quality vs looking like a cheap plastic shell with a vivid display. And I like the size to be manageable too. We are talking about a smartphone here, not something of real importance.

I apologize if I came off indignant, because in retrospect it really does comes down to what the individual buyer prefers.

        • Anonymous

Hey, no problem at all. The fact you apologized is refreshing, but wasn’t expected. I think as tech enthusiasts of one sort or another, we get excited and hopeful about the next amazing innovation to come on the market. I was just using my Nokia E7, and while it’s been sitting there for a week on a charger, on wifi, it’s updated my gmail, google calendar, etc, and while it is nowhere near as fast as either of my Android devices, it sure does impress with that beautiful display and build, and seems to do what I need it to. When the Anna, and then Belle updates come to it, it will reinvigorate the user experience on that device even further. When I go to italy this year, it will be a great Navigation tool, which I intend to compare with my Androids overseas. I’ll buy a SIM over there.

By the way, my unplugged G2X has been on wifi all day, live wallpaper, moderate use listening to mp3s, web browsing, email, and after over 8 hrs, the battery is at 78%. Not too shabby. I keep it currently on WCDMA only.

    • jarjon76

Nah. It’s only the “hottest” phone since the last “perfect” phone, aka the G2x You’ve hyped yourself up so much over this phone that you’re not seeing what’s really going on. This phone is nothing more than the next “big thing”, and it will quickly go away once people get bored and want something “better”.

I agree. I like this phone very much but I think the Nexus Prime will be “the” phone since it be endorsed by Google (updates galore!) and is rumored to have awesome specs that will match the SGS II, if not exceed it.

I bet the Verizon version will not be Lte capable also the att version I have a feeling its only gonna be hspa 14 mbps and no Lte for its upcoming network. Not all of us wanna switch to t-mobile. Yes I want this phone but I will never go back to t-mobile again. Because some of us live in places were t-mobile suck. Over here were I live in ft. Lauderdale Florida t-mobile coverage ain’t the best. Dnt get mad at me cuz I didn’t say all of t-mobiles network sucks I know there are many other places its good. But I had many phones from t-mobile mytouch 4G , bb bold, and lg g2x all great phones until I couldn’t take it anymore I had no service in my condo and at work and my girlfriends apartment. I know I could use wifi calling which I did in my condo and girlfriends apartment but at work I was screwed they had wifi but the crappy kind and it was slow and I couldn’t maintain a call more than 20 seconds with out it disconnecting. So I switched to at&t waaay more expensive :( but hey I don’t need wifi anymore cuz I know have full reception at my house, girlfriends house and at work on my atrix. But I want a Samsung galaxy s2 cuz my atrix is messing up. And so far t-mobile is getting the best one. But I dnt wanna go back to t-mobile.. o well ima just wait to see atts version of the galaxy s2 hopefully they dnt mess it up..

Hey, the Sensation has more resolution (950 x 550) vs (800 x 480) I don’t think that will look good on a bigger screen!

Is this phone quad-band? Does it have the Exynos Processor? Is this everything the SGSII is, but just a 4.5 inch screen?

  • I’ll take the 4.7 inch HTC Eternity over this thanks.

I’d rather wait for an HTC Android phone too. However, the Eternity looks to be a WP7 phone :(.

the only thing I worry about is if the att deal goes through if we will get screwed when att changes tmobile network. I know att said it won’t for a long while but I don’t trust att.

It is probably fake aluminum… Meaning it is plastic, or brushed plastic in this case.. Samsung does not know how to make a phone with quality materials.

Are they ever gonna release any phone? May be that Samsung guy( Shin Jong-kyun)  meant August 2012. And all you guys (slashgear, popherald, tmonews, gizmocrunch, ibm, pocketnow etc) post the same crap in different words. I’m sick of it.

    • That’s because some people read only a few sites, not all of them.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

I speculated in here back in March that this phone would debut with T-Mobile in August or September 2011, the time when T-Mobile usually releases a hot phone. (The Sensation was T-Mobile’s “summer release,” the SGS II will be it’s pre-holiday release.)

Besides, as everyone in here knows, T-Mobile keeps tight lipped about product debuts, until about 30 days before a product launch. T-Mobile’s SGS II is obviously debuting between August 31 and September 7.  It will sell for $550 to $600, $300 on contract with a $50 rebate.

To get maximum exposure T-Mobile will release this BEFORE the iPhone 5, which is launching in mid September or thereabouts.

By the way, all of the above is simply my attempt to answer your question “Are they ever gonna release any phone?” ;)

speak for yourself. the vibrant was my first experience with android. I wasn’t bothered by the touchwiz skin. in fact I didn’t really notice it. when I did manipulate my phone to run stock android, I was unhappy with it.

just because you prefer vanilla android doesn’t mean everyone does.

and to the first commentor, I still use the search button. the same argument applies here: just because you don’t use it doesn’t mean everyone else doesn’t. most people use their phones to text, facebook, and play angry birds. they aren’t concerned about aesthetic stuff like what flavor android is running or a camera button. a capacitive search button is not going to lose samsung millions in Hercules sales.

as for my opinion on it, while I think it’s a bit too large, DO WANT.

LOL… Samsung is the largest handset maker in the world, the Samsung Galaxy S was one of the most successful handsets of all time, the SGS II is outselling the iPhone where it debuts, and the SGS II is the hottest and best selling handset wherever it shows up.

Seems to me that the only lesson here is for some to learn how to stop posting juvenile, idiotic and pointless comments about Touchwiz.

Why don’t you send Samsung your opinion about Touchwiz.  They obviously need YOU to teach them how to stop being idiots. ;)

I agree there’s nothing wrong with making an option to turn it on or off. Me personally I like the touchwiz ui. They should also make it where you can use the touchwiz widgets on a vanilla launcher or a replacement launcher.

    Man,
What is with the search button? who uses that?
I thought they had learned from the vibrant mistake and would replace it with a camera button.

I think it is a marketing strategy, They first release a phone with no LED flash, then they release a phone with no camera button so they can release a phone with a camera flash before thinking of a major hardware improvement.

I’d rather a search than camera button (ie if I HAD to pick between the 2), I suppose because I use voice search for everything all the time; dialing numbers, quick web search, directions, etc. So here’s at least 1 vote for the design. Granted, no camera button can be disorienting, especially if you take lots of pics or are used to it.

Does anyone know what they talking about here?
It sounds like some of you, especially one person is building his own processors.
If it will be snapdragon, it will most probably be MSM8660, same one that was used HTC Evo 3d.
And it only comes in two flavors 1.2  OR 1.5 GHz Dual-core Scorpion
There is NO single core version.
With all other phones on the market, Sensation, iPhone5 coming out, Others…
If Samsung waited this long and will use some old chip, then it will be plain stupid, and this phone will be a total loss. Instead of keeping customers with T-Mobile, people will just run to get iPhone without any more second thoughts.

    • HelenJ

You are right.   But if Samsung puts the Exynos in another carriers S2 variant then I would get that before an iphone 5.  I really have no desire to go back to an iphone if I did, I’d dust off my 2G ir 3gs because the 5 wont be much different.

If the Hercules has the same crappy Qualcomm 1.2GHz chip as the HTC Sensation, they should rename the S2 to Delilah.  That Qualcomm (MSM8660) is based on their Scopion architecture which is a slightly modified version of the Cortex A8 (and enhanced in areas that don’t really impact day to day usage…e.g. floating point calcs).  The Exynos 4210 is based on Cortex A9 and it blows the Qualcomm out of the water.  So I hope the Hercules has a new Qualcomm Krait (MSM8960), otherwise I will be going to another carrier for the S2.

Better battery life, bigger brighter screen, better camera, and speaker than HTC’s crappy offerings but HTC phones are built like tanks though. I miss the solid build of my G1 and Nexus S but but Samsung’s hardware blows anything out of the water.

Finally I’ve been waiting to see which model or variant T Mobile would get. I have the G2X and absolutely love it. I can’t lie I been going crazy waiting on the Samsung Galaxy S2. Not to sure how a 4.5 inch phone is going to feel in the hand. I had a HTC HD2 and a HTC HD7 which are 4.2. I guess I’ll have to play around with it in the store to see. Gotta admit I happy as hell right now! :)

Go to an AT&T store and hold the Samsung Infuse (same 4.5 inch SAMOLED Plus Screen) , its supposed to have a similar feeling. My Girlfriend has the Infuse and its Huge compared to my Nexus S but feels and looks cheaper.

The original Galaxy S II (with a 4.3″ screen) is slightly narrower than the HD2 (66.1 vs 67mm), so maybe with a 4.5″ screen it might be ~ the same as an HD2…but just speculating.

I had an HD2 too.  It actually had a 4.3″ display, so this is not a much bigger screen.

In fact, the phone may even be smaller than the HD2 if Samsung designed the rails and frame thinner than that around the HD2.

Regardless, the SGS II is lighter than the HD2 so even if it has a larger frame it should be easier to handle since it’s so light.

      • The ATL Guy

Will they have this on prepaid networks?

        • you should be able to buy the phone full price and either use it with T-mobile or At&t’s prepaid networks or take it to Simple Mobile i believe.

I literally dropped my Nexus S (on soft carpet :p ) when i saw this this morning. Exynos or not i would consider getting this phone. I just hope it doesnt have that fake crappy chrome trim around the screen like the Mytouch series and Samsungs Infuse on AT&T. Can stand that overused feature.

How thin and light is this phone compared to the Euro version of the SGS2?

The screen does seem very wide but if the design is super stealth thin and light I might want to pick this up.

Metal back is decent but I honestly didn’t care for it on the MyTouch 4G.  It made the phone feel heavier and bulkier than it should have and made a warm phone feel even hotter as metal conducts heat more.

T-Mobile:  Please have replaceable battery door covers for those of us who need to replace ours in the future for this phone and other accessories that are useful.  Your selection of accessories for the G2x is embarrassing.

Please test out the battery to make sure it doesn’t die in 8 hours of normal use and make sure this thing knows how to properly connect to your data networks right.  I hate “4G,” phones that camp out on GSM or 2G only when a good 4G signal is available.

I guess the trackpad was removed due to the Apple litigation (aka: bull.shit lawsuit)?  I like how it looks without the trackpad; wonder if ease of use is hampered, though, without the trackpad.

    • TMOTECH

Who uses a trackpad on a touchscreen phone?

      • Anonymous

I use the optical mouse on my DInc all the time. Helps to position the cursor when editing text.

I’m sure the trackpad is just ad useful.

I miss is it switching from a mt3g to the vibrant. It makes a lot of stuff easier. Typing, some games, etc. Although I think it was just a home button and not an optical trackpad, I could be wrong though.

WHO?: People who write and want to select and edit text…and to more-precisely navigate (and select) stuff on web pages.  A trackpad gives much-more precise cursor-control than dragging a finger on the screen.
But for people whose use of the “phone” is mostly passive or “big-view” based — watching videos, taking pictures, etc. or who text and don’t care if their writing has errors (most people) then the relatively crude navigation on the screen is good enough.
BUT since the Galaxy S II (in any version) never had a trackpad, it’s a moot point.

      There is no track pad.

It’s just a big home button.

They removed it so it looks more like the original Vibrant and so that the layout is more familiar (four buttons vs 3). I personally don’t care for the 4 button layout.

      • Anonymous

Ah, thanks.  I didn’t realize the track pad couldn’t be used to scroll the cursor.  Glad to see it left out of the U.S. version, then.

This or the nexus 3? Difference to me is hercules has 42 HSPA+. What will the nexus 3 have? The sensation’s 14.4 is much slower then my galaxy s 4g’s 21 HSPA+ data. Can’t even guess how fast the 42 HSPA+ network is.

It can’t be the Nexus-3 since it has that cheap looking shiny chrome trim around the phone.

Never said it was the nexus 3. Point of comment was which one to buy cause hercules has 42 HSPA+ and it should be really fast. Also nobody knows what version of t-mobiles HSPA’s network the nexus is going to run on.

Lame try, dude.  That front could be lots of phones.  Post a photo of your hand (or any hand) holding the phone so that the “T-Mobile” AND “Galaxy S II” on the back of the phone are showing.
By NOT posting a photo that confirms your claim you’re basically confirming the doubter’s suspicions.

I remember last year there were rumors whether or not Samsung would put the hummingbird processor in US variant phones. So it seems we’re in the same boat again, wondering whether they will or not. Imo I can’t see them not using their own processor , I’m sure they can or have made it capable to run the 42mbps that its rumored to do.

People you need to temporary forget about SGS2, at least until we have concrete proof of specs.

If this phone turns out to be single-core, as someone claimed (as unlikely as that scenario may be), then this won’t be the same phone at all — it’ll move down from “superphone” to second-tier.  Certainly no iPhone-killer.
And it would be hard to understand in what sense this would be considered a “variant” on the Galaxy S II at all…unless ANY phone made by Samsung could be called a G S II…or at least any Samsung phone with a large AMOLED screen and an 8M-pixel camera.
Sure, maybe in real-world use (not benchmarking) a dual-core phone is only slightly better than a single-core phone, but that’s not the perception.  And perception is everything in what most people buy.
And if this turns out to be a dual-core phone then that makes the claim of “single-core”… well, “wrong” would be the polite term.  Time will tell.

    • Vlad2277

It’s not only about single or double core, it’s all about what kind of processor. It may be double, but snapdragon, a very similar one to one in Sensation, but not as powerful as the one in real SGS2.

      • Anonymous

Yeah…manufacturers and carriers can do whatever they want, but it sure seems odd to me that something as fundamental as the processor (or display, for that matter) can be changed and they still call the phone by the same name.  (and “Galaxy S II” does appear on the back of the T-Mo version)
        Radio-bands? — yes, necessarily. Cosmetics? — why not.  Pre-loaded apps? — unfortunately.
But change the brand and/or class of processor?  Nope — it’s a different phone entirely.
        But…I don’t make the rules — I’m not even consulted! ;)

It’s really disappointing that all four US carriers are modifying the look of the SGSII. I would have bought that model without contract and simply popped my Tmo SIM card in it. I visited PR last month and the Claro network is carrying that unmodified hw model and it was just as described, simply awesome looking. The only reason why I didn’t drop $650 was because I would not have 4G data. No I have to decide between the Hercules and the Vzn version.

They might want to get it out on the market ASAP,  since many people may not have the Cash Flo in the coming weeks,  let alone months after what occurred Friday to the USA.  Just a thought.  and hopefully if it does make it to the people – it comes WITH OUT ALL THE PROBLEMS that seem to be with phones ‘rushed to market, with lousy QC’.  Hoping it has a good / NO MAKE THAT A GREAT BATTERY LIFE- since this might be one of the last Smartphones TMOB puts out on its own !   It’ll either “makem or breakem”…

OT, but is T-Mobile retentions gone?  I have been with T-Mobile postpaid for 3 years.  Never called support before.  Having problems with dropped calls.  So I called to cancel and they just let me cancel without any attempt to save.  It’s what I wanted so I’m good with it, but, wow, not even an attempt to save.  Guess they don’t care.

At this point, “loyalty/retention” could give a finger in the middle, and that’s just the truth. So many people have been calling in threatening to leave or hinting they would leave if they did not get phone X or some other special deal. Not saying you’re guilty of this, but it’s like the boy who cried wolf. BTW I do not and have never worked for TM or any cellphone carrier.

You’re an idiot and typical of the consumer-unfriendly attitude so prevalent on this site lately.  I didn’t ask for a single thing, nor did I want anything.  I told them I had a lot of dropped calls, and wanted to cancel.  They made no attempt to save and agreed to cancel.  I was surprised, but fine with it because of all the dropped calls.  That is all that happened.  Your desire to make up fiction tells much about you and your mean attitude towards T-Mobile customers.

        • Anonymous

What attempt would they have to save you? A cell site on wheels to be rolled around with you so you stop dropping calls?

But if it won’t have original sgs2 processor, then it’s simply won’t be sgs2 we all read reviews about.
It will simply be another phone.

      • jarjon76

It’s a nice phone, but too many people are getting themselves too hyped up for this thing. I’m looking forward to all of the complaints once the novelty of owning this phone wears off. It’ll happen–it happens with every “next big thing” of a phone. Complaints of being “bored” with it or whatever bugs this phone will have are bound to pop up in the coming months (see the post release G2x threads for example).

Too many people waste time chasing that “perfect phone” dragon when they should really focus on getting a phone with specs they like–that actually exist–and be happy with that. There are a ton of great high end phones out there, so it shouldn’t be a problem finding a great phone for a great price. After all, it’s just a phone not something that will change your life.

        • ItsMichaelNotMike

Great post Jarjon76… but I allow people to get excited about things like this, after all everyone has their joys and passions, whether it’s collecting whatever, audiophiles, flying, etc.

And actually, getting into cell phones is fairly “cheap” compared to a lot of “hobbies.”

But you are right, there’s no such thing as the perfect phone.  It’s a pattern, isn’t it.  Whispers and gossip about upcoming phones, leaked specs, blurry shots, followed by sharp pics, then videos, price lists, the launch, and then the inevitable “battery life sucks on this phone, where’s the updates, Samsung sucks, hey there’s a new phone coming out in 2012, or so I hear.”

I NEED this phone in my life…. not really making as much money as I’d like to right now so I might end up “donating” plasma a few times just to get this.. I WILL GIVE MY BLOOD FOR YOU, HERCULES!!!!!!!!!!!

      I really hope you’re kidding.

Thanks Tj, of course I don’t NEED it.. I’m just hella hyped for this phone.. I should have foreseen I would be trolled for such a bold statement.. But truth be told, I will definitely need to start putting some money away into the swearing jar as I freaking love these guys that rather troll than share their excitement or help with any information of some sort that may pertain to this article.. Too bad this isn’t some forum where kevin and jarjar binks would have got a free troll boost for their post count… Get a life, kev

Very well said. We need air, water, and food. and Christ imo. I don’t think there’s necessarily nothing wrong to want something, just don’t let worldy material things consume you (us).

Wow, this post turned into something quite chaotic..way too busy, like several arguments going on, I think I even saw a religious one?.. Dave if you would be so kind as to delete this entire post thread.. back on topic though, this phone no matter whether it be a qualcomm or an exynos, will still be an upgrade from my current hd2.. Screen wise and everything wise almost… loved how versatile this hd2 was though.. My first phone was a sammy and I’ve pretty much been keeping a pattern of sammy, htc, sammy, htc so I will keep on with this pattern.. Last phone before the hd2 was the samsung memoir, sure it want a smartphone, but it was one hell of a camera (phone) :)

there’s a link to a samsung galaxy s2 with 800mhz LTE and 4.5inch screen rocking a Qualcomm APQ 8060, which is used because it can take seperate modem chips – LTE /42mbps HSDPA/Wimax etc.   Ugh I’m guessing no Exynos for the hercules.

I’m so torn. I dont know if i want to wait another month for this phone. I have an upgrade available this month and I was thinking of getting the Sensation but I really want to hold out for the screen on this bad boy.

    • LOL…come on Raul, I’ve been waiting FOUR MONTHS for this thing… we can both hold out for one more month…

ive got all you guys beat i have been waiting for a phone like this for years…im still rolling with my G1…so yeah im ready

  • Ryan

I don’t understand why make the screen larger without a resolution bump.  Seems like wasted space and battery.  A 4.5″ qHD or 1280×720 would be very welcome.  With the size so big, I’ll have to figure if I like touchwiz enough over sense to get the sgs2.

    • Intikilla2011

Visit an ATT wireless store and look at the Samsung Infuse 4G. That device is running the Super Amoled Plus screen at 800X480 (WVGA) resolution and at that res it also has the widest viewing angle at 180 degrees over what’s out there. I do agree a higher res would have been nice but the display is damn sharp ! Rumors have it that Samsung is working on 1280×720 res but that will be on future phones.

      • Anonymous

I’m with you on this, I think the people complaining about the resolution havent seen the SAmoled+ in action.  The Infuse looks amazing, so i expect nothing less out of this.

        • Anonymous

does the infuse 4g’s quadrant score match the original SGS2’s quadrant score?besides display i care about CPU/GPU performance.

“Samsung is working on 1280×720 res but that will be on future phones”=Google Nexus Prime for holiday with ice-cream android.

  • Hollykick

sad … why cant they sell the original galaxy s2 , why all these modifications ??? american cellphone companies know how to kill good phones .. well done … now i am moving on .. waiting for apple iphone 5, atleast it will have a uniform name and shape.  Why call it galaxy sII when it looks nowhere like the “real galaxy s2”, looks like they are trying to bring the price down so obviously all these imitations that appear on US market will be “nowhere” close to how great the real galaxy s2 is … sad .. but the truth is .. bye bye galaxy s2 !

  • Jerrill

if this does come with qualcomm, i’m gonna shoot myself! why make the US version crappier! Sensation is slow for a dual core phone. i rather have nvidia processors then that snapdragon crap!

    • Anonymous

im with u all the way.the reason i quit buying HTC devices is ONLY because of crappy Qualcom chips.i had the sensation and it didn’t do anything different from my nexus one so i returned it.now the bad news is that the T-Mobile SGS2 could possibly be equipped with crappy Qualcom(bad quadrant scores) again and if it does im not buying it,i’ll just wait for something that is equipped with NVIDIA or just wait on Google Nexus Prime.another NOT ORIGINAL phone just on its way to t-mobile or might as well call it Samsung Galaxy S 1.5.

4.5″ screen on a Super Amoled Plus display looks awesome!!! I went into a ATT store last night and asked to see the Samsung Infuse 4g b/c that has the 4.5″ display and I was really impressed. I am now looking forward to the Hercules. I thought 4.3″ was more than enough but I am down and excited on the TMo version now. I took out my MyTouch 4G with it’s 3.8″ display and I quickly lost interest. The Infuse is lighter and the MT4G with a bigger 1750 battery so I expect the Hercules to be around the same weight and with the same battery. I am going to start gathering my tech devices around the apt and begin
selling somethings so I can stomach the w/o contract price of what the
    price will be. Hercules Hercules…

I would much rather the model with the optical button and 4.3 inch screen. Not to be negative but why screw with perfection???????????????? Leave it to T-Mobile to always be different, not a good thing IMO. Looks like the Nexus S.

Anyone know if maybe Tmobile actually requests or requires what the phone entails or costs before it comes to their network? I’ve been watching a few Tmobile phones and (before this one) a Lot of them (at least from HTC) come with 768 megs of ram/memory where as the same type phones on other networks come with 1 gig… I couldn’t figure out why tmobile kept getting the crappier versions of all these phones, Maybe they tell them to cut features to bring the price down and profit more on the subsidizing of these phones through the plans? Thats the only thing I can think of.. put in an older cheaper processor saves em money, though on this phone raising the screen size another .2 inches doesnt really make sense in cost cutting neccessarily unless they leveraged out the price of the screen increases by the older processor. this is all assuming that the hercules actually gets the Qualcomm processor and NOT the sammy proc.. Which my asumption is leaning on.. I will be passing on this phone if its the older qualc proc.. No thanks tmo/samsung keep trying though..  I’m not holding out for a perfect phone, just a phone that is good, and tmobile keeps getting or taking good phones and making them cheap (off what their comparisons are, i.e. the REAL GS II which i’d take in a heartbeat in its normal UK form). Strike 500 tmobile!

  • ok so is it the s2 or not

Very… UGLY… Compared to the HTC Sensation. I won’t deny it has better specs though. But what good are good specs in an ugly phone..

I’ve been waiting for the phone since it’s announcement at Mobile World Congress. The thing that kinda sucks we’ll have limited cases/protecters since it’s larger than the OG SGS2 but whatever, it’s an awesome phone. Something that does bother me, the HTC Sensation also uses a duel Qualcomm Processor… I wouldn’t mind owning one of the new Iphones ONLY if it’s actually released on T-Mo. I read a few articles that analysists do predict it’s gonna be available to all four major carrier, which would make sense, because Android is really stealing sales… I might purchase this on the day of the release or wait to hear something about the Iphone..Which is probably = to pissing in the wind . I love my Galaxy S 4G but I don’t think it’s as fast as they made it out to be…….

I honestly love the look of this phone and think it looks better then the original sgs2. I’m definitely gonna get this but the processor (if it is qualcomm) will make this so close to being the perfect phone…unfortunately. I can’t complain though cuz anything is probably better then the phone I have (original mytouch 3g). YIKES!

I have the same phone. Its good to know that someone else is holding out for the perfect phone too, because Android 2.1 slowed down the mytouch 3g to an almost unbearable pace.

Hello everyone, I was really looking forward to getting this phone after seeing how out of this world it was internationally, I don’t mind the screen size and the looks.
What I do care about is the qualcomm processor everyone is complaining about… is qualcomm APQ8060 terrible compared to the international versions processor which comes with XMM 6260?

Does it slow the phone? Forgive me for being illiterate in this matter but I really want to know whether this is the galaxy s2 from oversease or just a bigger htc sensation every1 is describing it to be when they mention qualcomm processors?

Can someone kindly tell me what the difference will be between this phone and the international sgs2 if it ships with a qualcomm apq8060? Thank you
