HTC Sensation 4G Update To Android 2.3.4 Begins Today!

HTC Sensation 4G owners get a bit of good news today as T-Mobile begins pushing out an OTA update upping Sensation 4G devices to Android 2.3.4. Bringing a host of improvements this update will be a typical staggered rollout with all customers expected to receive the update by September 18th. While the T-Mobile support forum says “late September” we’ve been able to confirm that the rollout is expected to complete on September 18th. So what does Android 2.3.4 bring?

  • Software stability
  • Improved battery life
  • Improvements to Trace dictionary
  • Improvements to screen responsiveness
  • Improvements to video playbook
  • Improvements regarding device reboots
  • Improvements to icon pixilation
  • Improvements to Wi-Fi connection
  • Improvements to screen/photo resolution

As always you can check on your device to see if the update is already waiting by hitting About phone>HTC Software updates>Check and follow the on screen prompts if available.

    • TMOTECH

The phone has blue tooth. It works with all bluetooth devices. I am using it with my 2011 dodge ram and it works great.

Does when you get the OTA update depend on your area code or anything? Because I live in Atlanta, but I have a Kentucky area code.

  • kpop

ok after i did my update my battery jumped from 90 percent battery and it turned off…when i turned it back on it said i had a 7 percent battery life and my phone has been shutting off on me randomly when i either lock the screen or when i press the home button sometimes and it usually takes 5 or 6 tries of turning it on for it to actually turn on…its pissing me off i hate you 2.3.4!

    • Tudhuynh

      Same here.

      • Bwanadon100

Battery life drops like a rock now with 2.3.4, which I got last Friday. Full battery charge shows 100%, 9 hours later without doing anything (overnight when I’m sleeping it goes down to 41%. I have all my settings and usage set same as before the upgrade, and iy used to maybe go into the 90% range overnight. I hear most are getting better battery life, but us few, much worse. Pretty much unusable in this state. I’m going to give T-Mo a call after a few more tests. I did notice under “What’s using my battery” that Wi-Fi Calling used 24%, which I have turned off, and Display using 22%. Display was not used at all when I was sleeping, have Display set to turn off in 45 seconds, and I on;y used it for say 5 minutes after I changed the battery. I have 2 batteries and an extra charger.

I do like the screen shot capability, it doesn’t take random shots as others are stating.

        • Hman

After the update, I seem to be losing more than 10% battery life per hour even when I’m not using it! “Cell Standby” is using 70% of the battery. At that rate, the phone can last about 8-9 hours in standby mode.

I called T-Mo. They just told me to turn off apps I don’t need, All they could offer is general suggestions that won’t help here, and no bug fix coming so far, so I’m going to try the hard reset.

        • Hman

          how is that working out?

        • Bwanadon100

I did the hard reset yesterday afternoon. Wanted to see how the battery will perform before getting back. So far seems it helps, not dropping quite as fast. Not sure if back to 100% “normal” like it was before the upgrade, but definitely so far seems like a longer lasting battery. I’ll have to run the battery through a couple charge cycles to really know if the battery now lasts longer than it did before the upgrade. If it does, prolly not that much. But seemed to go down maybe 60% of what it did overnight vs. when it was really bad affter the upgrade. The reset is a PITA as everything needs to be re-installed, I tried syncing first, but don’t think it saved anything go my PC. And the hard reset didn’t roll my Android upgrade back, still 2.3.4 upon re-boot.

        • Bwanadon100

I really don’t know anymore at this point, another evaluation. I have the original 1530 mah battery that came with the phone, and an online order for a 1300 mah battery and charger arrived Friday, same day I got the upgrade. I thought the 1530 mah battery was maybe doing OK yesterday. I charged the 1300 mah battery overnight, in the charger, not the phone, as I was trying to drain down the 1530 original. I put the 1300 in today at 1:05 pm, made maybe a 20 minute call, and was online using wi-fi maybe 10 minutes. I think I did the wi-fi first, which brought it down to 98% (using battery Dr battery saver) by 1:30. I made the 20 minute call about 2:30 pm, looked afterward, and down to 75%. I didn’t use the phone, display off, wi-fi set to sleep when not using it for 15 minutes. I picked up the phone at 7:15 pm, and down to 47%. Not very promising. Definitely won’t last an 8 hour work day with anything but on standby the whole time. Got the 1530 in the charger yet, will put in phone in the morning before I go out for the day and the spare wrapped up in a pocket, and will let the spare drain more before I charge that too. So not sure if the hard reset helped a whole deal at this point. Sorry, yesterday looked somewhat promising. Phone is next to useless in this state unless you’re always near a charger.

        • Hman

I did a factory reset and it is MUCH better. I used the phone mildy for txt msg, checking email, etc. and after 8 hours, I still had 53% battery left. I assume it’s the spare battery that’s the problem….

        • Bwanadon100

May be the spare, the original seems to be faring somewhat better today. Had the original going since 8:10 am at 100%, 4 hours later still at 100%. At about that time   I used Bluetooth about a half hour, then off, no-wi-fi,  but online via 4G for maybe 10 minutes, did a couple app downloads and upgrades, turned that off, then snapped about 8 pictures within the next 45 minutes. So down to 97% after about 4.75 hours. I used Bluetooth (hands free) coming home, another half hour (even though I made no calls today or no one called me so far). Right now 94% at 3:03 pm, not bad. I did notice last night that Battery Dr. showed my GPS to be on, so must have been on that whole time, but I had it unchecked under settings, so don’t know if that means on or just available, but now both services say the GPS is off. Also, as someone else mentioned here, the upgrade did take the screen display out of it’s “automatic” mode, and I put it back to auto.

        • Bwanadon100

12;34AM, 68%, didn’t use much, since 3:03 PM, except for a 2 minute pone call, and maybe 5 minutes online using 4G, everything else off (except phone calling). So 16.5 hours “light duty”, original battery, 68%. Looks more hopeful now.

        • Bwanadon100

        • Bwanadon100

Went to sleep with no apps or radios except regular cell service, woke up still at 65% at 7:07 am, so something’s getting better. Switched now to spare battery and see how that works, but losing already quicker.

        • Bwanadon100

Now last night with the original battery fully charged, with all radios and apps off, display off, except for phone call service, 100% down to 79% in six and a half hours. Not as bad as that one night from 100% to 39% or somewhere close to that, but still unacceptable for standby basically. I believe any standby definition should allow the most basic feature, the ability to make and receive calls is needed, even if you don’t make/get them during that period, or what good would standby be? So one night it’s like 98% in standby  and another 79%, and still another ~39% (before hard reset). Way too inconsistent. Guess the charging plug stays in the phone when I go to bed, whether at 20%, 99%, or 100%. It should not drop like that in standby mode. Rougher on the battery always on charge, but, oh well, that’s how it goes, and I’ll get a good spare to keep on hand. Should be able to get up and have a dependable phone for all or most of the day without a daily morning ritual of opening the phone to swap batteries.

A new rumor suggests that the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II will arrive in stores on September 8, could be the first carrier-supported Galaxy S2 to hit the United States market.Summary: Multiple reports quoting a SprintFeed article say the Samsung Galaxy S II, reportedly set to use Epic 4G Touch branding, will arrive in stores on September 8th. If true, then the Now Network will be the first US carrier to offer Samsung’s most popular Android smartphone to date.Multiple reports led by SprintFeed claim that the Samsung Galaxy S II that will run under the banner of Sprint Nextel, will arrive in the United States smartphone market on September 8th. If true, then the Sprint Nextel Samsung Galaxy S II will be the first variant that will hit the US stores. Samsung Galaxy S II (or Galaxy S2) is the most popular Android smartphone of Samsung to date, based on the number of units shipped, and units sold.Additional rumors say the Samsung Galaxy S II for Sprint will use the Samsung Epic Touch 4G branding, but will still maintain the specs. The original (or global) version of the Samsung Galaxy S II sports 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of dedicated RAM, 8 megapixel back camera, a front facing 2 megapixel camera for video chatting, and pre-installed with the latest Android Gingerbread 2.3 out of the box with the custom Samsung TouchWiz skin on top.But the September 8 is also the rumored release date of Verizon’s much-anticipated Android smartphone, the Motorola Droid Bionic. The new Motorola Mobility phone with Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 and custom Motorola skin on top of the UI is a popular device due to its compelling Long Term Evolution connectivity and dual-core TI OMAP4 processor clocked at 1 GHz. Motorola Droid Bionic will be the first LTE Android devices to include dual-core processor.Aside from the Droid Bionic, rumors say Verizon Wireless is also expected to carry the Samsung Galaxy S II, but the carrier is still not confirming the reports. Droid Life speculates that the Samsung Celox could be the LTE version of the Galaxy S2 that will join the US Android market. Samsung Celox was leaked last week, sporting 4.5 inch screen and rumored to include dual-core processor and LTE connectivity.

My Battery is going down faster  errrrr.

    • Guest30923

same here. it definitely did not improve my battery life. I haven’t installed any new apps or done anything differently, so I don’t know what else it could be besides the update.

    • mimikr

Mine was too, past couple days lucky to get 6-8 hours of use.  Looking at the battery use (settings, about phone, battery, battery use then click on graph) I noticed that “Awake” had a solid blue line indicating constantly being used.  I assume this is associated with Fast Boot which is like Sleep mode, (settings, power) unchecked Fast boot.  Since then so far today my battery is showing it’s been 7h 17m on battery and still have 71% left.

Note sure if this is related but so far seems to be helping.  If not or if I’m incorrect in my assumption someone please let me know as just want to be able to use my phone without having to constantly plug it in like an old land line phone.

      • Guest30923

I unchecked Fastboot to try it out for a day. Battery was still draining at an unacceptable rate. I did a factory reset like people here suggested and it seems to be working out well so far.

Wooot! Just got my update and so far I can tell the wifi improved significantly. And screenshots are nice as well.

  • socalsensation

Just got the update so far not happy with it. Anytime I exit an application I get the htc white screen and then it has to load before showing my homepage with widgits. On top of that my phone has been off charger for 37 minutes and my battery shows 73% wtf??

    • TMOTECH

I am very surprised at all of these negative comments I am reading. I got the update on Saturday morning and so far everything is great. No reboots, no  shutting down, and My battery life is better. I think the ones with bad results either have a bad handset or have an app on their phone that is doing damage. I bet a factory reset would fix it.

      • socalsensation

I’m gonna try a factory reset and if need format the memory if that doesn’t help they better do something….. By the way anyone ever have their sensation randomly get really hot?

  • Gator9422

When I first got the update my phone was taking random screen shots & the battery was worse…so I did a factory reset and everything is buttery smooth no more lag!..the phone act feels like a dual core now…my battery is @ %50 after 10 hours now that’s a good improvement…if Ur having problems just do a factory reset & see how it goes..it worked for me

and set everything back up, make sure to back up your apps before you do anything, i’ve spoke with some tmobile tech n they “recommended” i reset everything for it to work better….so far no problems

for people losing battery quicker, the update seems to have changed the brightness settings from automatic to maximum so that might be the problem.

    • Anonymous

After updating last week, I was getting around to posting my thoughts.  Number one on the list would’ve been (seemingly) worse battery life.  I saw your post, saw the brightness changed and went back to “automatic”.  That just might make things better for my situation.  Thanks for posting!

      • Bwanadon100

Setting brightness back to auto will help, but I think there’s more to it than that, battery still isn’t back to par as before the upgrade.

After updating last week, I was getting around to posting my thoughts.  Number one on the list would’ve been (seemingly) worse battery life.  I saw your post, saw the brightness changed and went back to “automatic”.  That just might make things better for my situation.  Thanks for posting!
