T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread Update Pilot Begins For Employees, It’s Really Close Now

Look out world the T-Mobile G2x update is finally being seeded to T-Mobile employees, at least a select group in a pilot test to help address any problems the update might contain. Let’s just get right down to it and ask what does the G2x Gingerbread update fix other than bringing Gingerbread goodness to the G2x?

  • Unexpected restarting
  • Improved battery life
  • Improved front-facing camera operation with Qik Record and Share
  • Ease disabling of car home

Of course you can see the emphasis on this not being customer ready and NOT being sent out to the general public yet so don’t even bother calling T-Mobile and asking for it, odds are they won’t know anything about it.

Of course this news comes on the heels of an earlier post this morning which provided a link to get your hands on the G2x update early through the LG Software Updater. We absolutely recommend this method and emphasize that calling T-Mobile at this point to ask about this upgrade is just useless as they honestly don’t know anything about it.

The best news is that T-Mobile is seeding an update to employees which means the update is super close to being finalized and ready for public consumption. So right now we just have to sit back and wait. For G2x owners who have waited for far to long today’s news has to be met with open arms that an update is finally close…just a little bit longer.

For employees who might ask how they can get in on this update, if you have to ask…you aren’t going to get it any earlier as far as we can tell. You’ll have to wait like the rest of us!

Finally!  In the words of the Starcraft 2 Marine, “Hell, it’s about time.”  Hopefully this fixes all the issues, which were clearly software related if you look at the G2x CM7 forums.

I have done OTA updates with my Nexus One, and prefer not to. It’s easier to just download and install manually, and nothing gets lost in the transfer. If this cures the G2x woes, and the screen bleed issue is addressed, I may try it again.

I’m so disappointed in T-Mobile. They need to admit to there mistakes and make it right to G2X owners. Remember T-Mobile, you’re the best so far and no one is perfect.

It is past time for this to have happened. At least it actually is happening though.

I gave up my G2x for a Sensation two months after purchase after forcing the store manager I bought it from to make something happen but my girlfriend has been stuck with it. This will be installed, or at least downloaded, tonight.

Crap! My phone is stuck on “S/W Upgrade Please wait while upgrading…”
    Please help!

you and me both are having the same issue

    • Bitbucket

Go to xda and find the thread about using a “kdz” backup/restore.  Worked for me and I tried everything to get around the stuck S/W Update screen.  A big key is to not run the LG updater on a 64bit windows machine.  XP 32 bit works great.  Make sure you reload all the USB drivers on your XP machine before applying the kdz process.  Good luck.

  • Troysyx

Downloaded from the LG updater. So far so good. Stock keyboard is a lot better, and everything seems to be faster then before if that’s possible.

  • Edelaney61

I stuck it out and am running Gingerbread as of this afternoon. So far no reboots and by this time of day I would have had 20 or so. Lets hope this fix is it. Oh and be sure to check the unknown sources box in software and applications or it will never install.

  • Edelaney61

Is anyone able to get close to 4G speeds? I live right in the middle of 4G coverage and I might get 760 Down on a good day. Any suggestions? Is it the phone or just St Louis?

Do Carriers and Manafutcters post full release notes of these Android updates?

I want to see it to see what has really changed / addressed/ fixed.

Sure, besides the random reboots, they also need to fix lagging and overheating.

    Thanks,

  • Brandon Dean

I am wondering if the update going to the employees is any different from the one that came out earlier today. Because the one today didn’t remedy the reboot/overheating problem at all, at least on my phone.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6BZWRJOKVCUIZWHMEWABAUBLHQ gfam

Lol, why do I have a feeling that when they do finally release an “official” update, it’s is going to FAIL. LG and T-Mobile, KEEP PLAYING GAMES, YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE!

      • RUcerious

Ahh the *HATERS* continue to run wild. I did the LG update yesterday, took all of 15 minutes—worked lik it was supposed to– and, so far, it’s sweet.  *FAIL*? perhaps that is something you’re familiar with…

        • Brandon Dean

I’m glad it fixed your problems. Mine was fine for a few hours after the upgrade, and then it went back to its old trick. Overheating when I use certain apps (apps that didnt tax my 800mhz T-mobile G2 when I had one), and as a result of the overheating, not waking up when the screen goes to sleep. The only way I can ensure the phone stays on for an extended period is to keep it cool, and keep the back of the phone off for most of the day.

Not fun. Hopefully the OTA update has a few patches, and the one that got out yesterday was just raw android with no optimization.

Im still overheating with mine as well. Got up to 109° today. Magenta said it was my battery and Im just waiting on the replacement. No reboots though. Im with you. I hope this isn’t the official release. The overheating is my biggest issue. At least i have Ginger though. I would rather have these issues with it than without it.

i was reading your remarks from the other threads. big change in attitude, do you regret the update?

      • Brandon Dean

I dont regret the update. It did make the phone run snappier, and its Gingerbread, so the new keyboard is a major plus. But yesterday it didn’t seem to fix the reboot problem. It hasnt turned off today at any point, so i am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that it was just initial glitches (sometimes phones have problems in the first few hours and then they seem to iron themselves out after an extended run).

Have you tried to install the old camera apk? Wondering if it will work.

I haven’t. I dont know where to find the old camera apk, if you know, I would like to give it a try.

OKAY THE CAMERA SUCKS. I REALLY LIKED THE WAY THE OTHER ONE WAS SET UP IT SEEMED MORE LIKE A REAL CAMERA.THIS OPERATES LIKE A CAMERA ON A PHONE. VERY DISAPPOINTING AS FAR AS THAT GOES.

As for camera… I bought a camera app in the market for $3 that was way better the the old LG skinned one anyway …

  • Roman Ishchuk

interestingly enough, glitchier than Froyo =… run GOF )or any other demanding game) close it all properly and then no other demanding game starts…or the music player won’t start…or every app you start will ask you if you’d want it force-closed… maybe my phone still hasn’t sunk it’s teeth into that Gingerbread yet, but i’m not sure LG really tried to fix anything here….just yet…. looks and all the transitions are much better than they were in Froyo, and the keyboard is dope… those are the pluses i’ve dug up so far =]
