Download G2X Gingerbread Now Instead of ‘Summer’

Life’s Good, especially if you have a G2X right now.  No, the G2X Gingerbread update is not coming OTA right now (just wait) but you can download Gingerbread for your G2X right now.  What you’ll need is a data cable, a Windows computer, your G2X and this LG Updater.  Should be quite simple.  I can understand if you want to wait for an official announcement and OTA update from T-Mobile, but for the rest of you, have fun!  Also, this will break root, so there’s that.

Okie dokie…  I’ve felt my G2X brothers and sisters pain, even though I was fortunate to get an almost perfect G2X which has never given me any problems at all. I’ve just d/l’ed and updated the phone to 2.3.3 and gotta admit… I’m impressed. Very quick, even fast. Screens are very responsive. Did NOT delete any programs or settings.  A well done update, barring the fact it took LG so long to do this. Remember LG, you stated “Timely updates”… we need to discuss your meaning of “timely”….   Now, my G2X buds, get this and let every one know if your problems have been resolved.

    • Swaggaboystackz

I am still having problems it keeps sayin my phone is up to date what should I do

      • Dfireballwow

U have to unload this from LGs website. This not a OTA UPDATE. If you are checking for an update on your phone it will not show. If you want to wait for an ota update you will have to wait.

I updated, I already had the LG software on my computer from a previous update, so it was much simpler. The update to Gingerbread was 10:19 long. Everything is positive, running smooth however I noticed at least 1 major flaw. The camera is now horrible. The 8MP camera on this was never ‘special’ to me, as I still think the Vibrant/Galaxy S had one of the better t-mobile cameras, even better than the G2X, or Sensation…however now not only the UI, but the picture quality is pure CRAP now. -____-

  • s0ccergal

Downloaded and installed! Was afraid the screenbleed would be visible but it looks good. Also, it didn’t uninstall my apps. Hopefully all goes well. I know this might be too much to ask but I’m wonderingg if they will change the camera UI back. I really like the design of the UI that LG put on the G2X. Maybe once issues are resolved?

It can’t be stressed enough. BE PATIENT!!! When doing these core OS install you should not stop it, take out the battery, or interupt the process at all. This is installing critical files that tell your phone how to even turn on. If you interupt the install of any of these files don’t be surprised when it is a brick. My install took an hour. You can walk away for an hour and it will complete the full install without you clicking on anything. Don’t think it froze if it sticks at 55% for 2 minutes, if the green “install” tab is blinking you’re fine.
    1) Do not plug in your phone
    2) Install the LG update program
    4) Install USB Drivers (button on main screen) and restart your computer to ensure the driver is loaded
    5) Open LG update program, NOW plug in phone with USB mount off, start install
    6) Walk away so you aren’t tempted to screw with the install. It is tempting. Don’t let windows restart during the install.

    • ABEL-MARTINEZ22

did exatcly what you said and still stock on s/w screen

      • Flawbit

Do you need drivers installed? Check teh loading screen on teh PC and see if you have any errors… If its asking you to retry, chances are drivers did not connect

      • Anonymous

What do you mean “stuck on S/W screen”? What does the LG software installer say? Mine displayed S/W the entire time it was installing.

    • Bruza11

Thanks for the help but after I do all of these steps and I plug in my G2x, the updater does not read my phone.  I did not turn on the USB storage that pops up when the phone is plugged in. Any ideas?

      • Anonymous

When you plug it in, what does the LG software say? Does the bar stay “connect your phone” regardless or does it go through the check and say it can’t connect?

It sounds like the computer isn’t recognizing your phone as a USB device. I would suggest the you try using another computer, plugging it into a different USB port, turning your phone off then on with it plugged in, or turning the USB mode on and off with it plugged in. Basically your trying to trigger the computer into seeing your phone.

  • Brandon Dean

After having the upgrade for a few hours, it turns out it didnt really fix my phone. I still have random reboots and overheating issues. The update made the phone run faster, but seems to have done nothing to remedy the issue, at least for me. It is rebooting and getting hot just as often as it always did.

As soon as the OTA is available, I will try it, but if it has the same results, I will demand that T-mobile gives me a DIFFERENT phone, not of the same model. It is only fair considering that they werent taking the phones back under insurance and warranty.

    Very frustrating.

    • Anonymous

While I do agree, that with these phones, it would only be fair, we get a different phone (i.e. Sensation), because this was supposed to be a top of the line phone, and has been plauged with problems…, T-Mobile has not been denying these phones for warranty or insurance. A story ran on Tmonews about it but I was able to get an exchange on my account last week for it.

      • Brandon Dean

I think getting an exchange depends on who you get on the phone. Official policy for a few weeks now has been to deny taking them back until the OTA update has been pushed out. And when I tried a couple of weeks ago, thats exactly what I was told, that I couldnt send it in before the update. Well, if the OTA doesnt fix what this build hasn’t, I WILL get another phone, or they will be losing a 8+ year customer. I think its only reasonable if the fix doesnt fix it, then I should get another phone.

        • Anonymous

Your totally right. One rep will say there is nothing they can do. I call back and I end up with rebates, bill credits, or free shipping.

Mine took 17 mins. Everything works fine. Hope it will fix the Wi-Fi connection problem !

My first G2x had overheat & reboot issue also. It rebooted while charging (at about 80%). I am not sure what exactly the cause was. However I think the problem is the LG wall plug. It charged the phone very fast and made it very hot also (maybe it fried the battery by doing that ????). So when I got my second g2x, I started using the Samsung wall plug for charging. Yes, it charges the phone slower but my G2x has no overheat & rebooting problem for almost 2 months already.

  • Young H

Ok.  This might merit some remembering or acknowledgement by David and company.

Installed the update after reverting my leaked and rooted GB update back to stock Froyo and unrooting ( the update did NOT work until I went back to stock unrooted Froyo, and even then the update had to be started multiple times before it proceeded).  Phone seems much more responsive.  I haven’t had a reboot yet or an overheat.  The one thing I did see was when I did way too much it seemed the phone underclocked itself so much it was unusable and I had to force it to shutdown.  No problems since.

One annoyance that’s really a misunderstanding.  If you are connected to wifi you will get a wifi signal indicator and a G (edge) indicator in the notifications bar.  If you go into wireless settings, you will see “use only 2G networks” is checked.  If you uncheck it and go back in it will recheck itself.  You will never be able to connect to 2G.  If you don’t know what’s going on you will have no indication, nor any help with google (unless you find the one android forum I responded to).  Apparently, once you connect to wifi, instead of just automatically killing the data connection (meaning if you get dropped from wifi, you temporarily have no data), it sets up a 2G only connection automatically with the connection type set to GSM only.

People may be frustrated and think something is wrong (as I was) and they are unable to connect to 4G any more.  The devil is in the details tho.  Before this update, if you connected to wifi, the phone just dropped the data connection.  You’re used to not seeing any indicator.  This causes confusion.  But what happens is.  Once you disconnect the wifi, the setting automatically reverts to whatever you had it set to before.  In other words, if you are in a 4G area and disconnect Wifi, the phone searches and eventually you get a 4G indicator again.  No worries, just some confusion.

    • Gingerbread!

Actually data was never shut off in froyo, you can see by the battery life meter and that the same 2g only setting was checked when wifi was turned on and active. I’ve never understood why the data shows G sometimes but it has showed up randomly for me both in froyo and gb when I have been on wifi and had wifi calling active. Nonetheless, this update is an amazing advance from froyo. My battery life is substantially longer already

Updated my G2X through the LG website last night.  Worked seamlessly – took about ten minutes.  When the G2X rebooted it stayed on the G2X screen for a long time and I was worried, but I just hung in there and eventually it was reborn with gingerbread – awesome!

    • Porter

Ha, that happened to me too.  I was so excited to get past the “4%” issue that a lot of people seemed to be having, and then it stuck at the “T-Mobile G2x” screen for a LONG time before booting up successfully.

Love the update so far.  My phone wasn’t restarting as often as others did, but the phone itself seems to be running much smoother (on the old system, it would often take a couple of clicks on the power button to “wake up”), and battery life is much better.

One disappointment …. the gingerbread update replaces the excellent camera app from LG with a simple stock android camera app.

    • Dfireballwow

man so much agree with you i can’t believe they did that. the other camera looked and acted like a real camera and this one acts like and feels like a phone camera. Everything else is good just wish had the other camera…

if anybody can figure out why the screen says s/w and doesnt do anything else please help me because holding power and down volume doesnt work now i have to ship it to LG and i rather just fix it for now, so if anybody can find out how to restore the phone please help us who has this problem

This update drastically improved the battery life on my phone.  I used to go 10-12 hours max on a charge with the following:

2g Only (Just turn on 4G if I do heavy browsing)
    10 minute sync on 2 e-mail accounts
Bluetooth only on in the car (disabled the rest of the time)
Wifi on all day at work & home
GPS only turned on for navigation
No Battery defender service (stock power management)

After the update with the same usage patterns:
Currently 16 hours, 26 minutes since it was plugged in
    Battery at 49%

    Not bad.

    • http://www.facebook.com/king.kwon King Kwon

I didn’t have any battery problems.  Ran just fine for 2 whole days before needing recharge.  But I don’t run background applications.  Currently, as of the last reset when I installed 2.3.3 which was 18 hours and 30 minutes ago at full charge.  I’m currently at 76%.

      • Zt

Do you run any sync services?  (e-mail, facebook, etc)

I’m just curious how to get some extra life out of mine.  I do have quite a few apps installed, but try to keep the running apps to a minimum.  The only things that I know of that are actively using data are the account sync features.

Only thing I have on sync is gmail and facebook.  I have GPS, sync, and auto dim/bright on.  Bluetooth and  wifi is off.  I also don’t run a battery app.

As far as I can see the only thing running in the background is the following:

          App2SD
          Android System
          Google Services
          Maps
          Blue Romance (animated wallpaper)
          Swype

          105MB used   171MB free  RAM

I might do sporadic facebook checks and maybe surf the net for about 45-60 min during one day.

I’m getting about the same battery life on this phone as I did with my iPhone 4.

    • Yeah right?

Well I have to update everything is working pretty well except for a few force closes on system stuff like managing apps once in a while  for instance.  I am very very happy with the update.  Battery life is much much better.  Not running hot.  Has not rebooted once (to be honest I only rebooted like 4 times since I got it on June 1st) except for the camera.  I cant stress enough how bad the Camera is now LG needs to patch it ASAP.  Unless the camera was part of the problem to begin with.  If thats the case than I can live without it…I guess.
