T-Mobile G2 Discontinued, Sent To Smartphone Graveyard

That didn’t take long at all as we recently discovered the T-Mobile G2 was nearing the end of it’s shelf life and as of June 6th it’s officially gone forever. T-Mobile’s first 4G devices will be remembered for it’s highly rated QWERTY keyboard and of course the 4G capability it first introduced us to. We shall remember the G2 as we watch it sail away over the horizon to a smartphones final resting place. So long G2, you are gone but not forgotten.

Let’s hope there isn’t a long vacancy on the 4G QWERTY keyboard-ready end as we await any news on the myTouch 4G Slide.

Hope the mytouch slide is just as good or better..I love my G2..why would tmo get rid of it already

    • CRT24

T-mobile doesn’t manufacture phones so if HTC doesn’t make the G2 anymore then T-Mobile can’t continue to sell it.

      • Auser72

Smartest thing said on post thus far.

        • Broderro

Tmobile and htc keep shooting themselves in the foot. The specs on the g2 are not old. The phone is severely underclocked. All htc phones are underclocked for battery life. The g2 can  easily run1.5 gigs, why offer it at only 800 megs with a puny 1300 battery. The mtslide is 600 with a similiar battery, cmon htc. You dont want us to root your phones, but you underpower them.the sensation lags for the same reason. dual core with a 1520 battery, see what im saying.I dont mind paying a little extra for a bigger battery, and better speakers. My friends on boost and virgin mobile (the cheapo phones)dont have to put their speaker phones to their ear to listen.A 4.5 inch screen is useless if you cant hear clearly what u r veiwing.Get back to the basics, good resolution screens, good speakers, and  good battery life. There would be no use for xda if htc, samsumg, motorola, and lg would make the phones the way we want them.

      • HTC Pyramid

I disagree. T-mobile obviously saw an issue with the sales of the G2 and advised HTC to discontinue manufacturing. HTC was contractually obligated to provide the carrier whatever quantities they contracedt for. This is the real world, HTC can’t independently decide when to stop producing certain handset models when they are contractually obligates. Can you say breach of contract.

        • http://www.facebook.com/DeOunte De’Ounte Davis

The phone sold real well and is still selling well. The phone is 8 months old, while still a very good phone, in tech months is getting stale, plus tmo has to make room for the far superior Mytouch 4g slide.

        • CRT24

So you are saying that carriers tell handset manufacturer’s what phones to make and how long they will make them? I think you are a lttle off an that…..carriers divide which handsets they want to pick up and then obviously the manufacturer tailors certain aspects of the handset to carriers specs……the phone is being dicontunued because it would be redundant to offer the G2 and the new slide that is coming out.

        • HTC Pyramid

You and I both know that is not what I said. Let me be very clear…it is foolish to think carriers have no say on when a phone is discontinued from their lineup especially when the carriers are paying the manufacturers for these phones. T-mobile makes the determination on whether there is redundancy in their phone lineup, not HTC.

  • darkjuan

It’s a sad thing when they need to discontinue a phone after so short a time.  What will they use for replacement phones for those who need to use their warranty?  Was there enough time for them to even have refurbished phones?

  • Miketownnj

I also can’t do without having a great phone with a keyboard

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R2DJNPG3LOLC2O3F354PI4OB7Q Frill Artist

What about those under warranty?? What will they use for replacements? T-Mobile, you done fucked up again. You take out awesome G2 and leave crappy MyTouch 4g.

    • Auser72

They are still doing handset replacements for the original G1, so am sure G2′s will be good for atleast a couple years. As far as T-Mobile fu%@ing up, T-MOBILE has be on of fire with new phone line-up. Check out the specs on upcoming mytouch 4g slide, if just have to have a physical keyboard.

my friend just messed up his my touch 3g and he just got a replacement he got his on launch date so it didnt even have a headphone jack and all they do is give give you a referb and though that can scre up they could give  you a bad 1 most of the time you get a good 1

    • mrmiddl

G2 never needs to be sent in for repair unless user error . It’s solid

      • Tortionist

Exactly. I bricked my G2 twice and brought back from the dead both times. it is a seriously solid phone that rocks. There’s no issues like with the G2X.

Have they dropped plans to upgrade to GB?

    • http://www.facebook.com/DeOunte De’Ounte Davis

No the upgrade to GB and most likely ice cream is still coming.

  • http://twitter.com/GinUwiNLady Moira Washington

so strange it’s not even a year old? must not have sold to well, not to many non-geeks are into keyboards I suppose. shame I love my G2!

    • J. Williams

LOL. I love your pic, lol.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DeOunte De’Ounte Davis

like in prev post it sold real well, its just being phased out for a superior slide out qwerty phone. The Mytouch 4g slide.

  • Ted

This is a great phone! The G2 was criminally underrated.

    • Anonymous

It was my favorite phone.. its crazy how quicklyn things change.

  • http://twitter.com/borodin1 Eugene Borodin

Yet, they still sell MyTouch slide? WTF?

  • Respawn

Actually if you look toward the bottom you can see they discontinued the MyTouch 3G Slide

  • Jarvis Billena

Sorry this is off topic but what happend to the htc sensation coming soon on t-mobile??Cause i was just looking for it and now its gone!!!

    • JayeJaye

I was actually thinking the SAME thing.!

    • Tmo_Android

it is in several stores for display/playing around, walmart already selling it & in tmo stores from June 15…

  • J. Williams

I’m sure they have good reason for this, oh well. Goes down in history as a great device.

  • Anonymous

i dont care how powerful the touchscreen-only phones get. i will only buy one with a physical keyboard for as long as i live

    • http://www.facebook.com/DeOunte De’Ounte Davis

The Mytouch 4g slide says hi!!!!

    • Coqui1983

I’m with you on that i want full QWERTY and ONLY physical keyboard will do

    • http://twitter.com/hineschr hineschr

heres to the the g3 with a 5 row keyboard, 4 inch qhd screen, trackpad, ffc and 42mbps 4g

  • Anonymous

That’s weird, but as long as the Desire Z is available and the T-Mobile ROM is still floating around …

And what ever happened to 2.3 for it?

  • http://twitter.com/Reptarjr Jay

The G2 is the best phone i’ve ever had. It’s never let me down, or froze on me. I’m kind of bummed it never got the spotlight it deserved. If you over-clock it, it can still compete with some of the newest phones out. Its death was way too soon. Whatever T-mobile has up their sleeves, it better be good.

  • Anonymous

This will certainly go down as one of the more idiotic decisions in the history of T-Mo handsets. This was the only decent keyboard Android phones they sold.  The “Glitch” 2 is crap and the Sidekick is junk.  Way to fat!  I wouldn’t expect the MyTouch 4G slide to be any better as all of their MyTouch products have been terribly glitchy.  I guess T-Mo just can’t help themselves from making more stupid decisions.

  • Oreo

R.I.P. G2 oh why do the good one’s have to go. Does that mean the Mytouch 4G Slide is on its way around the corner. Ha ha time will tell and I hope it has an unlocked bootloader to boot. ¦)

  • Petey

Making room for the iPhone :p

  • Anonymous

Good decision by T-Mobile, the Mytouch series has a more commercial appeal than the G-Phones. Its a good business move.

    • Anonymous

The MT3G slide should be eol. Its older and not 4g. The cliq 2 isnt 4g also. G phones dont have commercial appeal bc commercials dont exist for any G device. I understand tmos move to get rid of the G2. It stands in the way of both potential SK4g and MT4GS sales.

    • Anonymous

Mytouch and appeal in the same sentence?? The only good mytouch T-mobile has ever made was the 4G mytouch. The G series had more appeal than that. G1, G2, G2x, G-Slate <– All great devices

  • Wunako_09

All this talk around the MyTouch 4G slide, but I’m wondering if they’re doing this to make way for the G-Infinity that’s supposibly coming later this year

  • Anonymous

My G2 is rockin and rollin’ with Gingerbread 2.3.4 with no EOL in sight! I can see why they’d want to get rid of it though. I can keep upgrading it and not buy handsets until my contract expires. LOL – Consumer wins! The G2 is one of the most solid, fastest, uncluttered (no bloatware) phones on its platform. I am extremely happy with it. It gives me *no* trouble, has excellent battery life and as long as I want, I can keep it updated. Yes indeed, I see why they want this phone gone LOL.

  • AdrianMT4G

This was an awesome phone. But seriously T-Mo, you still sell the Cliq XT and the MT3G? Those were horrible phones. The Cliq XT was by farthest the worst android in terms of glitchy software..

    This ish is crazy!

    • Coqui1983

      AGREE!!!

  • Coqui1983

    bring on the T-Mobile G3 ;)

  • BXDIN

All I can say is my G2 will continue to be used! The keyboard is probably the best I’ve ever blessed to touch with these delicate fingers! T-Mo needs to step up the line up with a G3 not a MT4G Slide the MT3G Slide was garbage and sad to say I dont expect much more out of the MT4G+S! Long live the G series, best line of phones out there!

    • Anonymous

The BEST keyboard (phone) that T-Mobile has offered is the 5-row kb on the Touch Pro2 (IMHO).  Dedicated number-keys, Alt key, Ctrl key, dedicated cursor-control-arrow keys — all that.
Of course, the hardware inside the TP2 — and the WM6.X OS — are ~obsolete…but I’m still using it. ;)
Surprisingly — given how quickly the G2 was terminated — the TP2 was still being offered by T-Mo early this year — 18 months after its launch in Aug-09.

      • Deceptivesmiles

Sorry but I have to disagree. The best keyboard is on the sidekick and even those who loathe it would agree. I do mis the dedicated number rown on my TP2w tho.

I wonder if Asruion will still stock the G2 bc I want one since my screen is craked on my current one. Not affecting usage but just the principle.lol

        • Anonymous

There are ways you can repair it yourself, places will still repair it if your insurance doesn’t

        • DuTcH PaPi

I have to agree with JBrowne, the Touch Pro 2 is the best keyboard made for a cell phone, but the Sidekick’s was great too.  I had both, but I think the button size, spacing and layout was what made it just a little bit better.  Not to mention the speaker on the Touch Pro 2 was awesome compared to what’s out there now, everything’s really tinny.

BTW – AT&T is still pushing the Tilt 2 (their version of the Touch Pro 2, which is what I have sitting as my back-up phone w/Android installed) on their website for $9.99.  Just two weeks ago it was $199.99.  They’re probably just keeping obsolete phones on their site so they can say they offer the most cell phones in the U.S.

I’m not looking forward to being part of AT&T’s crappy network again.  I just left them for T-Mo in February after being with AT&T for over 10 years (back when they were L.A. Cellular here in L.A.) and wish I had moved over years ago.

Best line of phones next to Nexus series.

    • http://twitter.com/hineschr hineschr

Indeed, the mytouch line up is a disgrace.

  • Tmo4eva

whati dont understand is they still havent killed the mytouch slide much older

  • Tmo_Android

This is because G2 is cutting AT&T sales :-)

  • Beatdownbros

Tmo you blew it. This phone is better then half the crappy phones your still trying to push. This phone is “flagship status” to me and a few people I know!

  • Anonymous

Dammit I wanted to get a g2 as my replacement as well such a great device wtf is wrong with t-mobile?? Its a 4G phone only been out for a couple of month.

  • Anonymous

    MyTouch slide outsold it?

    • Anonymous

      highly doubt that

  • Flipzide

    I guess g3 is coming :). !

  • alt-mobile

This really makes absolutely no sense.  Especially considering the fact that the MyTouch3G Slide is older AND the MyTouch4G Slide is rumored to come out.  Why would you kill/ax a phone (the G2) when it’s a newer phone, a much better phone, and when a newer version isn’t lurking to be released within a few weeks? Unless, of course, a new QWERTY G series phone is looking to be released and just haven’t caught wind of it yet.

  • tmagent

it has not been discontinued. they did not anticipate the demand for that phone and it is currently on backorder. dont have any more details on the phone, nor when it’ll be back in stock. but you could try a tmobile store near you to see if they have it in stock.

    • Goukisan

uh no its EOL. its done…stores may get shipments from what is left in inventory but the phone is EOL.

    • Thebrewtalone

this article is about the G2, not the G2x. The G2 has been discontinued.

  • Mareed666

I got my G2 for free thru a special promotion. If it wasn’t free, I woulda returned it. The keyboard sucks (no number row=fail). The stupid backlight issue is carried over from the G1, and the shortcut keys are stupid wasted space. If it hadn’t been fast and responsive, I definitely woulda returned it. It’s too heavy also. If they don’t give me GB, I’m gonna sue (or at least bitch a lot) ;)

    • jarjon76

You get really angry over a phone. Hate to see how you would react to a real life issue.

Sue over a software update? Root!

Lol, its so funny when people complain over an update…

  • The Architect (of the Matrix)

Although I’m eagerly awaiting more news on the mt4gs. I have to admit that I’m saddened to see the G2 go(prematurely).

The G2 is a beautiful and capable device, I owned one briefly and was most impressed by the build quality(sans the radical hinge design).

All is not lost though, as you can find a rooted G2 on craigslist for about $250. Still the mt4gs has some pretty big shoes to fill. *cues boyz 2 men “its so hard to say goodbye”*..lol

    • Anonymous

Love the name.  Why don’t you design a 4th Matrix movie already!?

      • The Architect (of the Matrix)

and this is why tmobile is in the crapper and is being sold to att. they have the worst decision making abilities on the planet.

This is a real shocker. Everyone that had one said it was tight.

  • alen

Why would they discontinue it when they are not offering nothing better with QWERTY? I really don’t understand how these companies function, no wonder they are being bought by AT&T, not that they are much better but the iPhone really helped them grow.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1586820069 steadymobb

you can still find it in stores, I saw one today…
and they’re getting the mytouch 4g slide during the first week of July

      Personally, I wouldn’t get either

    • Engrish

“they are not offerring nothing better”… so they are???  double negatives are a bitch.

I love my G2…and it still has tethering. I’ve never had 1 issue with it. I’m gonna hold on this phone until Tmobile offers something similar. Of course, I held onto my G1 until the G2 came out.

  • Bratty

I’m guessing that if this phone was in much demand, it would not be on the EOL list.

  • 4G_or_not_4G

I own the phone, and it is a great phone, but is about to be overrun, by the likes of the HTC Sensation and Samsung Hercules and even the MyTouch 4G…if they would have released it with a front facing camera, it would have had more life… shortsightedness on both HTC and T-Mobiles part

  • Matt

    G3 is on it’s way!

    • Samir

      really?

  • Whyrd

Why Is T-mobile discontinuing the G2? It’s a good phone and it hasn’t been released that long ago. T-mobile kept the lame phones like the mt3g for years but can’t keep a good phone like the G2. It doesn’t make sense.

  • TweetMo

The G2 is a good, solid device.
Makes no sense that the G1 lingered forever & the G2 only received 8 months! 8 MONTHS

    • G2Cupcake

I agree! The G1 was absolutely horrendous! I love the G2. It doesn’t feel cheap, the keyboard rocks, and the overall design is great. It also is a pretty fast phone w/out having to really tweak anything.

    • http://twitter.com/PaulHarrisonPro Paul Harrison

It kinda makes sense. The original G1 was the original Google Android device. It was sold by Google. Its sales were in part high because it was associated with Android. In the computer world, the original Apple Mac 128k, and 8088-based IBM PC XT, were sold long after they were seen as obsolete, because they had a niche as being the “original”.

The G2 doesn’t have the same thing going on. It was a good phone… last summer. With the last few months giving us phone after phone after phone with dual core CPU, relatively large amounts of memory, and higher resolution screen, the G2 isn’t a high end model any more. It’s not even mid-range – the forthcoming MyTouch 4G Slide, which will probably be somewhat cheaper than the G2 is now, is in most ways a superior device. The G2 is obsolete – and T-Mobile/HTC probably wants to cut the cord before a phone they marketed as an extraordinary high end device looks ridiculously obsolete.

I suspect EOLing the G2 also means the G3 is just around the corner. Here’s hoping.

      • TweetMo

Wrong. G2 has a first, too. Think about it.
Also, it wasn’t released in the US til autumn, not summer. Though I do hope the G3 is coming soon, but doubt it.

        • http://twitter.com/PaulHarrisonPro Paul Harrison

What was the G2 the first of, in terms of something really significant (like the Mac 128k was to the Mac, or the G1 was to Android?)

The G2 was a great phone at the time it was released – although you are correct in saying it was Autumn 2010, not Summer,, and given the flood of high power dual cores started during the Winter, it doesn’t make the case for keeping it any stronger. It was very much at the tail end of the period during which phones with the G2′s spec were considered high end. There’s little doubt in my mind that we wouldn’t be having this discussion if the G2, with its current specs, had been released in January 2010, and had been discontinued a month or two ago. The complaint ought to be that it was released too late, not that it was discontinued too early.

But, yeah, the G2 wasn’t really a phone that ever came to symbolize Android. That always was the G1, and as such it’s more than forgivable that the G1 lived on long past its sell by date.

I loved the G1, but your report is inaccurate.  It was never sold by Google – that was only the Nexus One to date.  It’s sales were high because so many were waiting for Android and it was quite a wait to the next Android device.  I agree G2 wouldn’t be around as long, but 8 months does seem a bit ridiculous — except the phone was never properly marketed.  No suprise it’s gone.  I love mine, still have tether access, only a couple random reboots since getting 2 free devices last December.  Since I got my ASUS transformer, I pretty much use the G2 as a phone and to connect the tab.  My daughter and I will stay with the G2 until either T-mo goes ATT or we break them.  BTW, daughter’s G2 survived a quick dip in the toilet, one day in the “rice bath” did the trick.  She was lucky, but the design also protected water entry, despite having a keyboard and hinges..

The G2s processor is faster then even the evo, The G2 is even running 2.3, tmobile is still selling the mytouch 3g slide a super low spec phone, There was no reason to get rid of one of their best selling phones unless there was a major issue

The G2 is a solid device, that when rooted and running CM7, outperforms everything else that’s not rooted. All you have to do is root it, get rid of what little bloatware there is, flash CM7(Android 2.3.4), and overclock it to 1.6 GHZ. AT that point it is one hell of a beast….very, very, very impressive. I’ve played with the I-Phone 4, SGS, etc. none of these even come close to touching the rooted G2. Even without root it’s still impressive.

  • Jose Guitian

im gonna attribute this to the horrendous atrocity that is….the z hinge! lol

My G2 was working fine until for the past week whenever I use the google navigation, gps never gets a signal! It keeps saying searching for gps forever. I reseted the phone to factory setting and still didn’t work. Anyone knows any solution? Thank you.

I’m having the same issue MSalam.  Was working fine, then about 2 weeks ago it started not finding the GPS signal.  This happens in both Navigation and the Waze App.  Have to shut down apps, unclick GPS and re-click, start apps again and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.  SUCKS since it happened while traveling and had NO CLUE where I was.

I still didn’t see anyone answer this question.  Is there a fix for it?

    Hello,

The G2 was discontinued because they cannot figure out how to fix the gps/location problem that causes the phone to erratically reboot unless you disable location.

This problem is all over the forum. Just Google it. They can not fix it. I am awaiting my 5th G2 under warranty.

And whats worse, they have turned off the tether option and now want to charge. You know what they told me…

Yes it was free to G2 owners but we reserve the right to change our minds without telling you…

Oh yeah, ATT is soooo much worse.

Oh…they offered me a Sensation for 250. When I asked why would I since I just paid off the G2 which was given away free, she said…well it is an option. I can understand why you would not want to spend all that money when I can not guarantee you that it will work in a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you rooted? If so, try wiping Efs data

My G2 has never had such a problem. I have had GPS enabled since the day I bought the phone and booted it up, and my phone has never spontaneously rebooted. My GPS acquisition has always been fast and extremely accurate. Granted, “mileage may vary” but I haven’t heard of any widespread G2 issues with GPS causing reboots. A few articles does not equal a major issue (except for the unfortunate individual with the problem). After several Google searches I only turned up less than a handful of issues involving GPD related reboots on the G2, and of those a majority were due to third party software or custom ROMs that eventually got sorted out.

Regarding tethering, I’m on T-Mobile and I’m posting on my PC from my tethered G2. I’ve been doing it for months, and there is no extra charge and the functionality has been part of my G2 since I got it.

Haven’t had this issue since the original OTA update like 3 weeks after it was released. Googled it and can’t find your issue since 11/2010, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

And the G2 is super ROM-friendly for flashing.

I can’t tell if this is a troll or not. I have not had a random reboot since the first ota in November and my location is on 24/7.

I am not a troll. Go to the t-mobile forums. Really, you cant find it. The last post was dated May, 2011.

And, yes, this is my 5th! Why do you think they keep sending them out and why do you think they are discontinuing the device after giving it away.

At this point, I am so over it. I haven’t had time to change the ringtone. And yes, I could root but that would void the warranty and I cant have that as it is a company phone.

I guess it is to much to ask for a fully operational phoine from TMO.

Thats why Dave has an iPhone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nah, I believe you Rockstar – it happens to me, and I was wondering what the deal was. Didnt know others were experiencing the same thing. But I enjoy the phone enough to live with it since it doesnt happen too too often. Only thing this phone is missing is front facing camera.

Thanks!! Worst thing was that they shut off the tethering and now want 15 a month to turn it back on.

Now I know why my GPS has been bugging out sometimes & rebooting the phone… that can actually get really annoying for obvious reasons but other than that I love the phone and haven’t had any problems with it. I can’t live without my keyboard.

What???  I have a G2 and have never had a problem with GPS or the phone rebooting.  This is actually the best device I have ever owned!  I think its stupid that they would discontinue the phone so soon. :/

I think they discontinued cause too many poeple loved it and dont want to buy the shitty mytouch slide or any mytouch for that matter compaired to what im reading…i wish they didnt get rid of the cliq because i loved it and really wanted the g2 1 nce they gave me a third cliq that was mysteriously dropping all calls !! Soon after they discontinued it the new one w out a sldie keyboard came out…im starting to think they get rid of the good phones that are a decent price wen to many people like them! That way they can say o well our new version is coming out soon and we will charge u 2 arms and a leg for a crappier version w out a real keyboard …and u say well i want the regular 1 ” o yea sorry they discontinued that one but idk why” wat a bunch of bs t mobile u suck!!!!

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had so many problems with your G2.  Mine has been working flawlessly since I received it on 1/24/11.  Also they have NOT cancelled tethering because that’s what I’m using right now to access the internet from my laptop.

  • M Zapata80

I still love my G2 and wont get any phone anytime soon.

  • Bratty

It would be nice if we had some sales figures to confirm either way. I tried to find some online but could not find anything specific.

I’m sad about this too.  I love this phone, and it looks like it will only officially get android 2.3.3 so root will have to happen to get 2.3.4 or maybe Ice Cream Sandwich.  As far as a G3 goes, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that until at least October 2012, giving G2 early adopters time for their contracts to run out.  Even then I’m not holding my breath, the high-end clean Android experience isn’t really a money maker for T-Mobile.  I would expect to see more mytouch stuff before another high end android device with qwerty and a relatively clean install.

I still have mine and I love it :D

The shelf life of these phones nowadays is ridiculous. I just got mine in January, for free. I don’t care as long as they have some if/when I need a replacement. I’m happy with the G2, its rooted and customized to my heart’s content, haha. There isn’t another QWERTY Android out, that’s worth me getting yet, anyways
