Famed iPhone hacker @Chronic is claiming through his own blog @Chronicwire that this Wednesday will see the release of four unlocked iPhone 4 models. You read that right as these devices would be factory unlocked by the Apple mothership herself. If this rumor comes to fruition it’s a bold move for Apple who has resisted providing unlocked iPhone 4′s in the United States so far. Original rumors by @Chronic pegged the Wednesday release as new Macbook Air models but a second look by multiple websites lent credence to the belief that Apple is cooking up unlocked iPhone 4 models.

Of course there is absolutely no indication that these models will be anything other than the current model iPhone 4 with AT&T only 3G/4G bands but we can hope can’t we? Plenty of us (including yours truly) use the iPhone 4 even on EDGE because that’s simply our cup of tea so we would welcome this decision by Apple. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s what on Wednesday.

With the route iOS is going you should just get a Android device but hey I understand not everyone likes Android just because its not made by Apple -.-

    • http://tmonews.com David

With the route iOS is going? Sigh…

give him a break lol, his fanboyism is clouding his mind so much that he doesnt know he is being a fanboy

        • whosaidwhat

The guy actually has a good point and I think the fanboyism comment should be made towards you and David.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micah-Madru/100001151887665 Micah Madru

Yup, because if history has shown us anything. If apple continues the route it’s going, we’ll be in the same boat as windows vs mac os x.

        • Anonymous

I’m curious as to how his comment reflects his level of education.  And please don’t come back with me being “another prime example”.

        • Geokaplan

Not so much a failure of his education as the critical reasoning skills. Apple showed its path at the press event last week and it is impressive. And lest anyone hurl the lame “Apple fanboy” line I’ll mention that my phone is a Nexus One with Gingerbread. It is a great piece of hardware and there is a lot to recommend Gingerbread, but after using an iPhone through work for several months it is simply a better user experience. I have Flash on the N1but avoid using it because of battery drain. In its current form, Flash is not suitable for battery-dependant devices.

    • Anonymous

He does have a point, but that could be a bad thing for apple if they do that though because android competes with each other hardware wise and with apple going that route that means not much can be left out. We already see apple going for a rumoured dual core processor on the next iPhone if that proves true, then thats definitely an indication that apple might try and jump into the hardware war . I don’t think apple would be able to compete in a mobile hardware war especially with android because apple always leave so much out.

what possible reason would someone want to use a smart phone on edge? i can barely load a text only email on edge.

    • Auser72

For those that have access to wifi majority of the time. Which is very c common for people in major cities.

      • Anonymous

Its still not as sweet though

    • Anonymous

I would imagine whoever would use the iPhone for t-mo even though the freq’s are only for edge would want to because they like the device itself and believe that edge would suffice in the places where no wifi is there. Edge really sucks tried using edge speeds in san marcos could not load tmonews at all.

      • http://twitter.com/woolfairy woolfairy

I just got an unlocked iphone 3g to replace my failing G1 that I’ve had since release. Even though they came out around the same time, the iphone is better, faster and more relevant as far as software goes then my g1 was. Plus, Edge is better than GPRS, which is what my Tmo coverage is most of the time, so either I have wifi at home with Cricket or Edge when I drive for 20+ miles. If I had anyone but Tmo, I would have 3G or 4G at home. Time to switch. Maybe in September…

    • Anonymous

Because they don’t need 3G.  Simplazat.

  • Csamp0219

No word on AWS (aka: T-Mobile) 3G bands??

  • Anonymous

I’m confused because there is no carrier insignia’s on the iPhone right?  Or carrier bloatware, so why would they need an entirely new model # to sell it unlocked unless something has actually changed?

    • Anonymous

Maybe bc they come factory unlocked, they have a different sku/part number. This would help distinguish between locked and unlocked models in sales channels.

      • Anonymous

Yeah your right I guess it could just be as simple as that.

        • TweetMo

But here’s to hoping it’s something more complicated.

        • Anonymous

          agreed

  • Maschwar77

Are these the supposedly lower cost phones rumored to be released by Apple?  Apple was interested in busting into the prepaid market by offering an unlocked phone to take to any carrier but it would be basically an iPhone 3GS instead of a 4.

    • Anonymous

It may be unlocked but you can’t carrier hop with it like in Europe(Unless you don’t want 3G).  Nobody’s 3G is the same.

  • J. Williams

They are just trying to get all the money they can, because people are unlocking them anyway. Poor iPhone lol.

  • nerdlust

This is great news for those that like iphone but to little to late for me. I used a 8900 and ipod touch for the longest time, but in april I tried my first android the cliq2. I didn’t understand prior to that of how flash can truely enable the mobile internet.

Who cares if he likes the iPhone?  It’s not like he tries to hide this fact, or that he has turned away from T-Mobile in favor of AT&T or Verizon because of the iPhone.  He uses the phone he likes best on the carrier he likes best.  That doesn’t mean you can’t love a different phone.

not to say that if an unlocked iPhone 4 comes out that would work with 3G/4G speeds of T-Mobile that I wouldn’t get it (because honestly, I have a MyTouch3G and need to stop texting and driving but damn keyboard is soooooooo seductive! It’s always talking to me like: ooo yeah you know you want to push my buttons…)

I just sold my unlocked iPhone 4 (with original 01.59 Baseband) for 750. If this pans out to be true, I bet the guy who bought it from me is going to be pissed. Lol. On a side note though, I just couldn’t handle the EDGE anymore. Way too slow. Now, if we see a tmobile compatible one, then back to the store the Sensation goes.

    • Gilbreen

I sold my original BB iPhone 4 a couple of months ago for the same reason.  That, and always having to wait for upgrades to be made available for the jailbroken/unlocked phones.

But, if they were to release a TMO compatible iPhone, back in the water I go.

any news on the G2x ?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=589290121 John White

As far as I know it still sucks, still reboots 15 times a day, still freezes all the time, still has no battery life, and still has major GPS issues.

      • Johna

Well mine doesnt have these issues so. G2X is a pretty sweet phone.  does hae reboots maybe 2-3x a week though (=

        • thaghost

Yes my g2x had issues. However, I and many other ppl did a factory data reset and now it works fine. The phone doesn’t suck, lol. If you are not into skins(sensation/evo 3d, etc) then it is the best phone on the market in the U.S. And 2nd in the world behind the gs2. Zero lag unlike those mentioned above. Droid x2 had lag as well and its ugly so stop dissing my phone guys…sorry, got a lil emotional, lol.

    • http://ashn.myopenid.com/ Ash

If you travel a lot, and you are planing to buy unlocked iphone at full price, you should buy in another country.
Hong Kong has the best price.

      • GoBULLS2012

I actually was in singapore couple of weeks ago however since most/all apple stores are official reseller they are more expensive than what you see on the website. I am amazed of how many people have Iphone 4 (guestimating 8 our of 10) in singapore. I heard the same in hong kong.

        • http://ashn.myopenid.com/ Ash

unlocked iPhone have the best price in HK outta all the countries.
And yes, many many people use iphone in HK. (Sorry to say people there have a sheepish mind, not just for iphones….but many other aspects in life too.)

But Android has been picking up a lot lately.

  • Anonymous

I know there’s a certain base that is undoubtedly loyal to Apple but even given how smooth they are, I still think Android provides more upside.  Besides, those screens seem miniscule compared to everything else around it (save for Blackberry).  Considering that, this actually is a good move by Apple since they aren’t nearly as ubiquitous as Androids due to the sheer number of handsets and carriers.  Getting the iPhone out there certainly can’t hurt at this point.

  • Adam

I love apple products, and have owned a couple of apple computers over the past 8 years, but for me personally I prefer android phones. I am excited for those who really want an iPhone, though.

    • http://www.volkswagen.de Michael

Same here. I only use Apple computers at home but for phones, Android is the way to go.

  • Petey

I think this benefits for those who travels internationally… (eventho you can just buy a lock one and unlock it yourself thru jailbreaking… it’s not even hard.) But buying this for T-Mobile… I don’t think there’s much benefits from it (no 3g). I’ll wait for them to release the next version.

  • Rockstar

How PATHETIC is it that the purveyor of a TMO site is running an iPhone on EDGE becuase TMO cant get a decent phone.

Think about it. You are conceding the web to wifi for all intents and purposes. What does that say.

It says, David will be jumping for joy when ATT takes us over and all the phones sold this year are doorstops!

Heck, it makes sense. The iphone on EDGE stinks but will be 3g in a year. All the other phones will be junk.

    But the masses keep buying.

    Oh yeah, 42 Down. Right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • jem

      Hey Rockstar,

Consider an anger management course and a remedial english class at your local community college. In any case, I also use an iPhone and i’m a manager for T-Mobile. It’s not that T-Mobile doesn’t offer a good lineup of devices, but rather, there are certain qualities about the iPhone that work best for me. I mainly communicate via text and email and I find no Android phone–regardless or carrier or manufacturer–has mastered the responsiveness like that of an iPhone when typing. Albeit not perfect, the iPhone is, undoubtedly, a pretty solid piece of a hardware and until other manufacturers can master these things in the form of an Android device, many will continue to carry their iOS devices. At least, people who know better, that is. PS. Rockstar sounds like someone who would claim to have T-Mobile although he has a Simple Mobile sim card inside first generation Samsung Behold with a cracked LCD he found on the street.

      • Mikedhustler

LOL… i like the last part….(PS. Rockstar sounds like someone who would claim to have T-Mobile although he has a Simple Mobile sim card inside first generation Samsung Behold with a cracked LCD he found on the street.)

      • Josec_2008

sorry to let you down but i have a tmobile G2 and text and email are much better than the iphones, so really the only thing iphone has better is smoothness due to its gpu acceleration throughout the whole device (hence  the samsung galaxy s2 beats the iphone in smoothness in everyway possible

      • Virgo82

Guess who can join Rockstar in that remedial english class :)

    • Setzer715

Once you grow up and realize that data speeds are not everything to everyone then you’ll know why so many people (millions in fact) use the iPhone on T-Mobile’s network.  Because it is 10 time better than ATT’s.  My house is split, I use Android and my wife uses an iPhone.  Why?  Because she likes iOS.  She gets along just fine with EDGE data rates.

  • http://Facebook.com/jayrello JayRello

I’ve never owned an iPhone myself, but i have played with one owned by a friend a while back. i really had no interest in it at all and i was so frustrated because it took almost 15 mintes to find the browser before he told me it was safari… lol. before that day i never even used an apple product so obviously i wouldnt know the browser was called safari. all-in-all, the iphone is a great device from what i experienced with the 2 or more hours i spent using the device. i’m happy for all you guys who have been waiting for a t-mobile compatible iphone but android is what i like most; tucked neatly inside HTC hardware!

  • Anonymous

That’s one bitter ass cup of tea… lol !

What kind of idiot relegates them-self to the EDGE network just so they can use the iPhone? Its not that great of a device. it’s more of a fashion statement more than anything else, its an iPod touch that has cellular frequencies, made by a company that has a lot of evil tactics up it’s sleeves. But i get it, at one time I thought the iPhone was a magnificent machine, got tired of apple and how slow they bring the OS along, for instance, how long did it take until they allowed you to send and receive pic/video messages? It took until iPhone 4 to be released when they finally added a flash to the camera dammit. Now this company runs around suing people left and right, but yet go and copy WP7 and Android’s notification system. Feel sorry for those of you who are using an iPhone on t-mobile, get a life. By the way, my Galaxy S2 blows the iPhone out of the planet.

    • Bratty

Keep that tin foil hat on tight – the green men are coming!

    • Josec_2008

LOLOL so true, i will admit tho i never though any device would beat iphone on smoothness but the samsung galaxy s2 just makes the iphone look like a toy LOL F*** iphones, i dont get why would things about the iphone 4 which is an old device already would be posted on this website

  • Matt

I’d be interested if it had T-Mobile’s 3G bands on it but no new phones for me until I see how the AT&T-Mobile thing pans out.  My contract ends around the time the merger will go through if it’s approved and I don’t want to spend that kind of money on an unsubsidized phone only to jump ship for Verizon or Sprint and be left with what would effectively be a very expensive iPod Touch.

  • http://twitter.com/Gumbottoms21 SebaS

I hope this is true. Im so close to leaving Tmo for Verizon.

    • DeAtHbYdArKnEsS

Did you take into consideration that the iphone for verizon is CDMA…meaning you cant do data and voice calls at the same time??  Tmobile is the best carrier by far especially with their phone selection and pricing….you’ll simply just be wasting your time and money with verizon.

I have nothing against iPhone, but before reading the post & looking @ the title, I had the impression it would be a unlocked iPhone 4 with T-Mobile 3G band compatibility. Yeah… silly me. My bff wants an iPhone (idk y, I mean I get it in a sense, but to like be so pressed about getting a iPhone like it’s really life or death threatening & there isn’t anything else to use, I don’t get). But, people must really love the iPhone to deal w/ it on Edge. Sure there’s WiFi, but edge cellular…. I could never. Good luck w/ that. A true win is if Apple released a iPhone 4 with T-Mobile 3G bands unlocked, but I guess that’s asking for too much. Maybe in the future. Of course there’s nothing like 4G since we’re in 2011; but it would suffice I guess, for others that is.

  • Anonymous

What’s the point in even offering an unlocked iphone if it doesn’t include 3G T-mobile service?

It’s not like AT&T customers will be running out in droves to pay an unsubsidized contract free price.  From what i’ve read previously, you can’t even use a smartphone on AT&T without them harassing you to sign up for a data plan.

  • http://twitter.com/davemontoya Dave Montoya

I have a feeling we could be surprised by Apple. There was that picture of the iPhone 4 on T-Mobile. If Apple does this, making it compatible for T-Mobile this week. I will never buy another product from anyone other than Apple. But, I guess we will wait and see.

  • Ted Rodriguez III

iPhone one Edge over Android on 4G? Are your crazy??? I wouldn’t take it even if they added the Tmo 3G/4G bands.

  • Ted Rodriguez III

Could be true though cause if I am not mistaken, the iPhone is on Deutsche Telekom (Tmo) in Germany which ATT just ate up.

    • Online

You are mistaken. Deutsche Telekom has not bee eaten up. What AT&T is in the U.S. is Deutsche Telekom in Europe. Deutsche Telekom has the iPhone as long as AT&T over here. If the deal goes through it will be T-Mobile USA which is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

    I
don’t think it is worth the hassle to buy an unlocked iPhone from
Apple when there are only two carriers that provide service for the
phone. It is very cheap and hassle free to use a prepaid cell phone
in many countries. All you need to do is make the people in the U.S.
that may contact you when you are overseas know the phone number. I
have purchased prepaid cell phones overseas for as low as $20 with an
airtime charge of 0.10 cents per minute.

I too want an iphone. I am sick of my blackberry which has not kept up with the technology. I bought an ipad2 some time back, and now I get it why people are crazy about iphones. I definitely want one, but not with AT&T. I am waiting for Verizon to get the iphone 5, which in addition to being usable on Verizon’s network will be able to use GSM when overseas. Their iphone 4 is CDMA only which exists only in a handful of countries. That said, if I see the time table for the merger of T-mobile and AT&T move up, I will surely jump ship for iphone 4. If Verizon blocks my move by removing the unlimited data plan, I will probably buy an unlocked iphone and sign a 2 year contract with T-mobile and be grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan with AT&T when the take over happens. But I do aspire to go to Verizon because I have experienced the evil AT&T 10 years back and no way I want to be part of that after a decade of the best service in the world from T-mobile.

This is actually not that bad. My brother has an unlocked iPhone 4 with the $50 unlimited EDGE plan T-mobile offers.
