T-Mobile WILL Receive The LG G2X, Also Known As The Optimus 2X

Of all the emails I receive lately, one of the most common is, “Will T-Mobile carry the LG Optimus 2X?” As many times I’ve answered yes I often receive responses that are a combination of skepticism and doubt. Well doubt no more as the above image is concrete evidence from a very trusted source which shows that T-Mobile will in fact carry the LG Optimus 2X as the “G2X.” While we’re running short on details other than the above image, plenty of videos, specs and information can be found elsewhere on the site and interwebz to give you the lowdown on the Optimus 2X.

Check out Aaron’s hands on video below for a closer look at what to expect when this drops on T-Mobile. We’re digging into this with super speed hoping to find both pricing and a release date soon!

P.S. No word on what, if any kinds of 4G speeds this phone will have. I wouldn’t expect it to be 3G only though!

Not bad at all. It’s going to be either this or the Galaxy S2…if and when it hits t-mobile shelves. Still waiting on that HTC 4.3+ inch android phone to hit t-mobile also.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!! I was starting to worry about T-Mo. Can’t wait for this phone to hit the shelves. Now bring on the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Pyramid, Blackberry Bold Touch and T-Mo will have some hot phones!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Prod1702

This is the replacement to my Nexus One. I want the Nvidia chip. I know the reviews say meth but thats for the software not the hardware. My plans are to root it anyway so i will be happy with my CM on the phone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Charles-MacMurray/100000263923477 Charles MacMurray

Folks on XDA seem to think the bootloader is locked down on this device, no CM for you ( or me ). I hope the unmentioned HTC device has ( as ) good hardware specs.

      • joelvictor

        what is CM?

        • Anonymous

cyanogenmod. Very popular custom android rom

        • remixfa

there is no garuntee of CM on the phone with or without a locked bootloader. It is all up to the devs to buy the phone and root it. Heck, the ever popular galaxyS phones are just now getting some minor support. That said there are dozens of fantastic rom builders out there other than CM. CM is the “name brand” of rom builders now. My personal fav at the moment is Team Wiskey on my vibrant. They do incredible stuff.

For the person earlier whining about not having a 4.3 inch screen, the galaxyS 2 is comming out shortly and its either a 4.3 or a 4.5 (cant remember). and really if your not going to buy a phone for 0.3 inches of horizontal real estate thats just stupid. the diff between 4.0 and 4.3 is negligable in real life.

        • Anonymous

Not to argue but an EVO always seems huge whenever i grab one. My desire for the almighty 4.3″ screen is dying though since it’s been since the release of the first ever 4.3″ phone that I’ve been waiting for TMO to get one with Android. I’m just gonna get a Tablet now and hold this Vibrant through the year (maybe).

        • Anonymous

Did you mean to reply to someone else?

        • HTC Pyramid

your logic is faulty. you are assuming everyone who wants a 4.3 inch display is already has a 4 inch display. i have my 3.7 inch nexus one display so moving to a 4.3+ will be monumental for people like me.

      • whosaidwhat

        Well, in that case…NEXT!!!

I’m a tech guy so I like to play around with my phone…I would want to install CM in case I don’t like LG’s UI or they decide not to update to the newest Android so no go for me if it’s locked.

      • Prod1702

As long as it can be rooted with a custom recovery and cm makes a Tom your good. The phone has already been rooted so we should be fine. It doesn’t have tohave a unlocked bootllader to get custom Roms.

current I’m a retail corporate employee, as far for the unknown Upcoming HTC device it is confirmed not directly from T-mobile but instead from the HTC rep. apparently the other day when i have an little conversation with the Rep, I’ve made the REP slip out a little info, as a right now she doesn’t have any acknowledge about the device, but she states that device does exist. lets hope that HTC will give us more info in the future…

    • HTC Pyramid

we already know the device exists. that is not news. the question is when is it coming to T-mobile.

I’ve been looking forward to this one, Sammy Galaxy S2 and the HTC Pyramid, yeah, the Bold Touch, too. The downer with the X2 is that everything I’ve read omits anything regarding 4G or HSPA+,
This is the most complete spec list I’ve seen: http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_2x-3598.php

My contract is almost up and I’m keeping a close eye on the newcomers to T-Mo’s lineup. I’m hoping they shake the bugs out of all of them before I need to buy.

  • Anonymous

This is great news Tmo! As for me, I got a gr8 deal so I went with the G2 and got it all rooted and ROM’d. I’m a happy camper. This is a sweet phone and will be a solid entry in the upper tier. But the quads are coming in Q4 so, the reign won’t be long. I must say that I was a bit disappointed at LG’s announcement that their other phones were guaranteed 1 upgrade. To make that statement says that they felt a need to do so – which gives me that old feeling of XT and Behold 2…which got left behind. These phones are too much of an investment to be DITW at six months. I’ll probably root from now on, its more cost effective and I’m certain to get my updates as long as the phone’s architecture and my ability to install ROM’s will allow.

  • Joelvictor

This is it! I’ll get this one since I’m due for upgrade now. Hope it’s coming soon! Thanks Tmobile. Good job!

  • Mytharak

Anything made by LG cannot be worthy of a “G” name. That G belongs to HTC, and having a “G2x” (must be better than the G2 but simmilar, right?) not made by HTC is just wrong. I am sure it will be a good phone. I am just 100% against the name.

    • Anonymous

I think the “G” belongs to T-Mobile so they can do whatever they want with it. HTC made the HTC Dream T-Mobile made it the G1.

You haven’t even used the device 1st to even make judgment. Maybe LG finally got it right, ya know…

The 2X is wonderfull but I will wait for the 3D.

I really don’t know what are you talking about, but the Optimus 3D not only is the world’s first 3D phone but it is a SUPER smartphone with DUAL-CORE, DUAL-CHANNEL and DUAL-MEMORY.(world’s first also)
Is like having 2 optimus 2X inside this one (well, not 100% like that, but extremely fast)

    I don’t think this belongs in T-Mobile’s
‘G” series of phones. I’m completely open to a non-HTC offering, but the “G” line has been the source for purist Android phones and lacks in two areas:

    - No Physical Keyboard
    - Not the “Google Experience” UI (The most egregious violation).

Call it whatever you want, but likening it to the G1 and G2 is a bad decision to an otherwise solid-looking phone.

    • Anonymous

Maybe thats why they calling it G2(x) hence the x and not G3. Maybe that will be the next G series phone with a Keyboard. Idk thats just what i think.

  • Anonymous

Was the LG rep mis-informed when he agreed the display was 4.5″? Or is me thinking this whole time the 2X was 4″? Which I don’t have a problem with either. Two minor things I’m noticing with newer phones is the lack of a trackball. Idk if I speak for myself but I really miss that feature on the vibrant. Also led notification. Does the 2X have led notification?

  • optimusprime

They call it G2x because it will run vanilla android not the lg UI and the G lines runs on vanilla so I think it will have the vanilla UI just like what they did on the G2 and desire Z.

But yea no matter what UI I’m getting this phone. And this phone has a 4.0 inch screen not 4.5..

    • Anonymous

Vanilla would be a huge bonus for LG as well as T-Mobile since we get the Vanilla phones.

    • kuni

Vanilla Android on this phone is wishful speculation. The phone has been announced with an LG skin (soundly criticized by Engadget in their Feb 7 review of the 2X) and it makes little sense for a mfr to have two software versions of the same phone floating around. No precedent for that which I can recall.

Also note the 2X was announced with froyo (2.2) not gingerbread (2.3). Vanilla would surely be the latest version, no?

I hope we get the Samsung Galaxy S II, but given the Galaxy S 4G launch, I’m doubting that will happen.

      • Hellbunny

Not saying G2X will run vanilla android but there is at least one precedent, and it is an very obvious one: G2 vs Desire Z.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1085351904 Lazera D Thompson Jr

the only difference is HTC Sense UI…….
not much of a versus -.-

      • tmobeast

the desire z runs htc SENSE! and the tmobile g2 run VANILLA which is the same exact phone EXCEPT the ROM!

so i think thats what their going to do on the G2X . YEEEEE WAY TO GO TMOBILE!

EFFF THE THUNDERBOLT AND VERIZON AND ALSO ATNT WITH THEIR ATRIX. lol

That’s alot of wasted money if they are all smart phones could have bought a half decent car with that amount of money

  • Anonymous

I just sold my nexus S, I had about 4 other smart phones before that and i hate how batteries cant handle the phones these days. For all this 2X aka G2X can do, you will have to charge the phone 3 times a day.
I went back to my blackberry because I love not having to charge my phone for 3 days.

    • beastly

Yeah, I hear that. My Defy actually holds battery pretty well, though. 1550 mAh, and the processor and screen don’t suck juice the way HTC phones do.

    • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Did you at least get a full day of usage from your Nexus S? because I was considering getting one. I don’t need more than 1 day of usage out of the device, just 1 full day with moderate usage with HSPA left on.

      • Emma

I work for T-Mobile… I’ve had the mytouch 4g, the samsung vibrant, the htc g2 and i can tell you the batt life on the Nexus S is the best out of all these phones by far!

        • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Thanks! That’s all I needed to know. I really appreciate it.

        • Anonymous

My bad I forgot to tell you how my battery is I get a full days use and few hours into the next day on a overnight charge I use my phone’s GPS and search a handful of sites and I’m not running a CR nor am I using an optional home screen or many other things that take a huge toll on my battery oh and I use the facebook app a lot

        • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

That’s great. Thanks. I’m slowly narrowing down my choices. The Nokia C7 just made it into my list though. I’m really leaning towards the Nexus S, but I kind of like manufacturer OS overlays. This T-Mobile Optimus G2X looks really good, but I’m interested in the battery life since it has a dual core processor & all. I would love the Sidekick 4G (would love a flash on the camera, thought about using phlash) & as much as I love keyboards I think I can do without with all the touchphone alternative keyboard options & I like the long slightly wide touchscreen smartphone build. I want FFC,great battery life (at least a full day of moderate usage) flash on the camera, smartphone, high-end or very good mid-high end, & plenty of relevant apps.

        • Anonymous

I noticed better battery life on my Nexus One after installing Gingerbread on it. That may or may not have something to do with the Nexus S having better battery life over those Froyo phones.

Maybe they put the G in front of 2X because its accompanying the G slate, not because its from the Tmo G line.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1085351904 Lazera D Thompson Jr

and the G slate is in the G line also……
G line devices are always real good devices with stock android on them
      G1 = first android phone (stock 1.5)
      G2 = first 4G phone on t-mobile (stock 2.2)
      G2x = first dual core phone on t-mobile (stock 2.2 or 2.3)
G-slate = First tablet with Honeycomb on t-mobile (stock 3.0)

The guy (Taylor) from androidandme.com knows stuff about the pyramid… im guessing not alot from his comment.
“Pyramid is in testing and I know people in the US who have the phone. I expect it will be revealed at CTIA, but don’t expect it to launch until the summer.”

    • Nardva

I’m pretty sure the G2X drops this month. You figure the G Slate will drop this month and they will push both products from LG. I’m thinking the Pyramid doesn’t drop until the 2nd half of the year. July probably the earliest.

    • Anonymous

Tmobile always gives well in advance notice complete with sign up sheets for these kind of phones so I can’t see a March release IMO.

  • Anonymous

I am thrilled. This phone will be a big seller for T-Mobile. I would bet many new customers would sign-up for the ability to use this phone on a fast network. I can hardly wait. Currently own a Nexus One (still #1) and the MyTouch 4G. I would buy this phone in a heart beat. Please T-Mobile bring this baby to us right away.

      Still true

These ads are usually made 3 weeks prior to them coming out. My guess would be the last week of March.

  • Bizzy

I think too many people are getting hung up on the name of the phone. They could call it the LG Smart for all we should care. There isn’t a ‘set’ G series for T-Mobile. The fact of the matter is that it’s produced by LG, so it will run LG’s UI. Couple that with some solid specs, and you have a winner in my book.

Some sources say this phone is coming to T-Mobile in April. That’s accurate, IMHO, because T-Mobile is in a hurry to get as many 4G phones in its lineup, immediately, if not sooner.

Having lots of 4G superphones complements T-Mobile pushing 4G in ads and TV commercials. As I said before, T-Mobile wants to give the customer the widest selection of 4G phones when they walk into the stores, after seeing ads trumpeting video calling or “the largest 4G network.”

I would not be surprised to see some commercials quite soon saying “T-Mobile – the largest 4G network and widest selection of 4G phones.”

    • Anonymous

You do realize T-Mobile has the most and fastest 4g devices right?

      • Anonymous

        MT4G – EVO 4G
        G2 – EVO Shift 4G

        Just sayin.

        • Arthurhayden

you missed the Cliq 2 which technically is a 4G phone with a 10mbps download max.

        • Anonymous

Aight we can technically add that to the list.

LOL… you do realize I was talking about commercials and advertising not who actually has how many and the most devices.

To be sure, I can’t comment on that because I do not know all the 4G devices that each carrier has.

Why don’t you post those numbers (4G device name and carrier) as it would be interesting to compare.

Lastly, regardless of how many devices T-Mobile has, I still submit that T-Mobile wants to load up its 4G selection, so to give the customers the widest choice and to complement its 4G ad campaign.

        • Anonymous

          Eeeasy eeeeasy now.

      • Anonymous

Oh, in terms of “fastest 4G devices” I am not sure even T-Mobile would agree with you, as evident that I am not seeing ads by T-Mobile claiming it has the fastest 4G devices. I suspect that even T-Mobile would think that claim is going to far.

Remember, what you call “fastest 4G devices” are actually fast 3.5 G devices. Recall that in summer 2010 T-Mobile was calling its CURRENT 4G network “the fastest 3G network.” I opined that T-Mobile marketing and management realized that it was going nowhere fast with the term HSPA+ and it having the fastest 3G network.

So T-Mobile in November 2010 pulled a fast one (in light of the ITU agreeing with U.S. carriers that “4G” is a generic term and simply means faster than 3G). T-Mobile simply changed “the fastest 3G network” to “the largest 4G network in the U.S.” Note that T-Mobile did NOT claim, as you say, it had the “the fastest 4G network” (by logical extension network claims applies to handset performance).

    • LC

It would have to be coming out end of March/early April because the shot in the article is a sales competition they have going on for the sales associates…Can’t give them a phone if it’s not close to being released. Obviously giving it away a month or two before release is one thing, but you can’t be saying they’ll win this phone and not have it be released until Q3/Q4, ya know? I’m picturing a kind of bundled release of the LG G-Slate with the Optimus 2X/G2X. It would make sense as stepping stones if you will in the same “line” of devices.

I guess I’m the only one who loves the manufacturer skin overlays than just pure Android. The only plus with pure Android Vanilla is the fact you’ll get updates quicker. But, pure Android is boring to me. I loved the customized HTC sense they put on the MyTouch 4G

Actually false with stock Android the device runs a lot smoother than anything with a skin I will admit that expression sense is great but its nice to not have to worry about lots of lag although from what I hear mt4g is among the few skinned androids that doesn’t have much lag

It runs like a champ. After getting over the screen swipe transition animation I realized that its pretty fast and responsive. BUT that MT4G battery is horrible.

That too depending on the processor, but that doesn’t mean that anything I said is a false, I just left something out.

Well sense is ugly to us! Not just me but US. Sense eats battery alot! And also so much lag like forreal! Lag! So don’t mess with vanilla roids.

How can you speak for the whole US? You’re just 1 person, & was it that necessary for you to use exclamation marks? We’re not in a huge case or debate, & you’re not a defense attorney pleading your clients case to make a 6 figure salary, so what’s the excitement use of this “!”? & once again, my opinion. That was all.

I much prefer Touch Wiz’s added feature over vanilla and I agree the updates are the only real bonus. If every UI got timely updates along with stock Android then I bet ppl would dump all over Vanilla.

No it didn’t, the trackpad looking thing was a square home button.

They don’t get the better phones lol they have bigger screens just to fool their customers into thinking its better idk why so many fall for this marketing technique its like the opposite of what happened when companies tried going small that trend ended with pantech because they made the smallest device know to man that it was so boring and impractical and its also why nobody calls on a ipad or tablet. Big does not equate to better

eww i hate big phones they are so doofy so that’s defintly not what attracts me to this phone!

I hear this will be a 4.5 inch screen also been told 4 inch. Im hoping for 4.5 Does anyone know for sure?

  • optimusprime

What kind of screen display does this one have?

  • Dee

Im confused is this like a GAME phone where its made specially for Games? or what is this phone so famous for?

    • Dialo

First phone with a dual core processor. I believe it is also the first phone to shoot video in 1080p.

    • LC

They just use the game as an example in the hands on video to show the increased speed of the phone with the dual core processor, but it will do more than just allow you to play multi player games more conveniently.

This is going to be such an amazing device. LG has quite the little line up going with T-Mobile between the 2X/G2X and the G-Slate.

  • Quagmeyer

Yeah, well I bought the G2 cause I was assured of upgrades. Well G2 is now surpassed by Nexxus S. So its time to reach for my knees.
