(Updated: New Pic!) Sidekick 4G In The Wild!

Update: A couple of things have been pointed out, one it absolutely looks like there is a front facing camera present. Secondly, you can clearly see the Samsung etched logo on the back of the device. Most important, it seemingly retains the same form factor as the original Sidekick, happy face! This device is running Android 2.2.1.

Just three-seconds after we posted word of the upcoming Sidekick 4G being manufactured by Samsung, in the wild images hit our inbox! Oh how we love in the wild images and we are hopeful that our ninjas can send in a few more images of the homescreen and give us a good look at any possible Sidekick-only Android skin. Until then, just enjoy the pics!

/s? but yea, this is a big FAIL.. even more of a FAIL if it doesn’t have a SAMOLED screen that swivels.. if neither one of those, TMOFAIL.. HTC woulda made this look MUCH better.

well the form factor is true to the sidekick. but having the four buttons spread around would make the phone very uncomfortable to use in portrait.

Additionally that screen size looks small. 3.5″ or smaller, to which to hell with that. I refuse to ever go smaller than my N1.

    • Anonymous

The Sidekick LX screen is only 3 inches. If the screen size seems small to you now then you probly weren’t gonna buy a sidekick in the first place huh?

I was hoping it would look a a little more slim and sleek. This looks like the sidekick of old. I guess it is hard to make a sidekick not look like a sidekick but look like a sidekick to attract sidekick fans…….

  • Alex

Not even flash had to be samsung, it would have been nice back then when I was a sidekick user, but im sticking to the mytouch line, especially on how good the mytouch 4g is.

    • the mytouch 4g is a beast, that phone is keeping me from jumping ship. cant wait for android 2.3 on it

I don’t want Android 2.3 on the MT4G. I want them to skip Gingerbread and go straight to Honeycomb. 2.3 has very few features that the MT4G with mySense doesn’t already have.

  • Well it certainly looks like a sidekick! Look at that keyboard.

  • so vibrant 4g and sidekick (both by samsung) are the phones that’s suppose to keep people from jumping ship against the iphone 4 on verizon? c’mon tmobile. SHARP is a great brand why not work with them again?

      • Have you ever seen the phones they make in Japan??

      BYEEEEEEEE! lmao.

    • umm do we need to show u the sharp SK again…

  • Here’s the $64,000 question.. Can someone with the old $19.99 sidekick plan use this device? I could see SK lifers want to come over to this, that and Marc Cuban (a self-noted Sidekick fan)

That’s what I’m wondering. A reduced data plan cost seems like a must to go along with this phone.

Sharp was consistently poor when it came to the Sidekick’s hardware.

This Sidekick needs to ROCK, I’m already liking it though. I’m just a little afraid of what the software interface could be like.

i think that may be an ambient light sensor and not a FFC, but i could be wrong.

ehh its alright, i think i see a front face camera, but no flash and no specs were leaked. i hope the screen is atleast 3.8 or more. my contracts up in july, depending on the specs ill prob pick this baby up, unless the galaxy s2 is diff from the vibrant 4g.

  • Anonymous

Hopefully this will run vanilla Android, but we all know it won’t. There’s no way a new Sidekick will have plan Android on it…..A It will probably have something like MotoBlur on top

    • Aston

in that case, motorola would be making the phone. :

  • Looks like they got rid of the swivel screen.

That looks like an excellent “replacement” to the Sidekick LX to continue the legacy. The Keyboard look amazing and that damn sure looks like a FFC. Just need to discover a 1Ghz processor and I think TMO has a sure fire win.

      • im sure that was just a shot at samsung in general since its takeing them forever to update their phones as a whole, and I agree. thats why i wont get another sammy phone (coming from epic back to evo
). 2.3 is out now, and besides the nexus S (googles baby), i still dont think they would get that out to phones quicker than other manufacturers.

The original Galaxy S got FroYo in November, Canadian carriers gave it FroYo in December (all three variants including the identical Telus T959D and Rogers i896(Captivate) ) and T-Mobile released it first in the US and they went on record saying that their customizations held up the update and that they would be speeding up the process in the future. So, Samsung is not totally to blame for the slow update.

  • Chances are it’s not a front facing camera. Every sidekick model has had an ambient light sensor on the screen since the Sidekick II days that looks exactly like that. (Top and center on LX models, left of screen on SK3 and SKII) However lower on the screen it looks like there might be something else that could be a light sensor, so who knows

Yeah but it’s clearly got a lens in there. If it was a sensor it would be slightly masked. I’m pretty sure that is a FFC with T-Mobile pushing so hard for them to be in their phones now. The Galaxy S now has a FFC.. and with the Sidekick being a communicators device it only seems right.

EDIT: that is the FFC. The proximity sensor & light sensor are to the left bottom.

  • This is arguably going to be one of the fastest phones running android. The sidekick lines have an advantage over every other cell phone. Its ALWAYS in portrait mode, sliding is fast because you just have to flip the orientation, great formfactor. Let’s go T-Mo!

My hopes are high, they’ve always delivered with sidekicks. Also think back to the Sidekick LX I think the last one, it was recieving updates almost every 3 months. What’s better than that??? C’mon it looks like its running a stock version of android on top of that, i’m pretty sure they won’t have a UI rework instead they’ll probably have an app portal a la Sense for HTC, or the PSP network for the Xperia.

Hopefully that’s the case instead of a whole UI rework, that’ll push back updates another month or two. IMO but then again if T-Mo is doing the coding with Danger they have a solid phone, because they have some good coders over there. #Excited

I’m very tempted to drop my Mytouch4g for this phone…but lack of a camera flash is holding me back. I don’t mind any “skin” (XDA IS YOUR FRIEND)…but rooting will never add a camera flash. Its not so much about night time pics (the vibrants pics are really nice) but the fact that I can use my phone as a flash light. You never realize how much you use it as a flashlight until you don’t have it anymore (bitter g1 owner lol). I really don’t know….rhrggrgrgrgrgrgr….Choices!

Yes this is true…but still….lol. I feel like not adding a flash to the camera on a modern phone is like not adding a 3.5mm jack in replace of a “samsung/htc/nokia/usb” proprietary jack (like the g1). Why not add it? I think thats the real question. Will the phone having a flash increase the price by that much…if at all?

Wow, I don’t comment much, but that phone looks like crap and I needed to say it. At least they could modernize “Sidekick” by giving it a screen that at least filled the flip up portion. Instead it looks like a phone that is the size of a tablet with a 3 inch screen.

    • Braziga2727

Lyke omg i totally agree, all phones should look exactly like the iphone and just be all glass and tiny and it should only be a screen with no bezel at all…..

seriously though, its a sidekick, the tried and true form people were looking for is there with some improvements, you act like its a surprise that this phone looks the way it does.

I personally love it for being what it is, a sidekick, alot of loyal tmo customers, (the deaf community and the urban community) love this phone and keep coming back for it

    thanks david phone looks sick!!!lolz

  • cliquser

    hmm, seems interesting.
all it needs is at least a 1ghz processor, hopefully that IS a front facing camera, and a 3.8 inch screen or bigger, hopefully that DID keep the swivel screen, with some great resolution and im IN! HOWEVER, they could of made it sleeker with some chrome or shiny black glass or hard plastic.

  • This isn’t a Sidekick! This is a RIP OFF COPY of It’s own brand! No swivel screen, Keyboard horribly modified, the overall look of the phone looks plasticky and cheap. Indeed a disappointment. T-mobile you shot yourself in the foot with this one. If you would’ve worked with SHARP and ATLEAST built this phone properly regardless of what OS it is running then maybe just maybe you’d be okay. This is disgusting. SAMSUCK.

This phone would have been worth my time had TMobile gone with HTC, using the same specs as the DesireHD.

Too bad it’s a slide screen, instead of a swivel… Love the keyboard, though.

    • Did you notice that the number keypad like on the other Sidekick’s isn’t there? I was looking at the pic with the keyboard and was thinking “SOMETHING IS MISSING ABOUT THIS KEYBOARD! GHRRR!!!” I figured it out haha.

Initial reactions – looks like Front & Rear facing cameras. I do not see any camera Flash. Is that an antenna sticking up on top?? Does screen flip or slide? (pics are unclear) Like 4 front buttons reminiscent of the original. Looks like Menu was moved to top right instead of top left – was this to bypass any Danger/Microsoft complaints?? Back Button seems to be in same place (bottom right) as the Back/Done button. Not sure of the other 2 buttons on the left side. what about the sides? are there top buttons & bottom buttons? where does the charger go? what type? memory card slot? built-in memory?

Danger and Microsoft can’t say anything about this product cuz T-Mobile own sidekick no one else has ther hand on that name

Oh man, I love the keyboard. I’m a huge keyboard fan, and nothing beats a Sidekick keyboard. I may just have to give up my G2 for this, as long as there’s a 1ghz Hummingbird processor or better(which is the biggest advantage I could see Samsung giving this device). I’m a little concerned about that, though- Samsung just announced some Galaxy phones that are more midrange, with 800mhz and 600mhz processors. If this phone gets one of those processors, I’ll have to regretfully pass even though I LOVE this form factor and keyboard.

Also, check out screenshot 5 with the tabs on the right side of the home screen- it’s obvious that there’s some sort of Android skinning at play here. Doesn’t surprise me, but does disappoint slightly. Hopefully it won’t bog down the Android experience.

It looks like a pretty well thought out sliding design on the hinge, they even when as far as to engrave ‘T-mobile’ on it, so I bet its final. The swivel screen was the one thing I was hoping for, even more than great specs! I guess it was just out of Samsungs comfort zone. That or the kick mechanism now belongs to microsoft. I wish they would have let Sharp make the phone as usual, I would have loved to see what they could have done with modern superphone components running Android, They already had thier LCD down, the screen on the LX09 was fantastic. Oh Well……..

I never had a sidekick so getting one would be a thought, depending on specs however tmo should’ve worked with htc or the original creator of the device probably would’ve been very high end. Considering that sharp would’ve in my opinion would’ve wanted to compete once more with phones or htc could had a field day with the possiblities of new technology.

    • That would have been Sharp, Sharp made most of the old sidekicks, and from the sk2 onward they did a good job, in my opinion.

      • Sharp made all Sidekicks except the SK Slide. I wish Sharp would make this one but, oh well lol.

If it still has its swivel screen added with a touch screen. Samsung’s super almond plus display 1ghz hummingbird processor 16gb of on board storage and a micro SD slot. T Mobile 4g net work front facing camera and a rear facing camera with flash I think Samsung and T Mobile could have success.

    • Coqui

if thats the final product then, no swivel and no flash

      • I hope it’s not the final product. It doesn’t come off to me as “final product”. Sidekick’s always had some type of…flashy umph to it. I don’t see it in this, just yet.

  • Hmm…so it’s no longer a Danger Hip Top. It’s the T-mobile Epic minus the flash. :)

  • *Will have*

ANSWERS HERE! OK this is what I’ve found after some nerdy detective work 1) it is in fact a slider NOT swivel (unfortunately) if you look at the pics the white “SK” found on the top Right side of the screen remains on the top right side when its open, if it were swivel the logo would switch from top right side to bottom left side when opened. 2) it is in fact a FFC on the top left, the light sensor is located on the bottom left and 3) it is NOT stock android. it IS a Custom UI just look at the 5th pic on the right side where it says “phone/apps/contacts. thats all i got for now. hope it helps

    • Ahh yes, I figured. Thanks for the report

  • fam

Hmmmm I might have to consider getting this one I am looking for a phone with a keyboard

  • ex-SKLX user

i just had a thought, normally there were always at least 2 sidekicks “live” at a time over the last few years of the Danger Era, once there were even 3 and thats not counting the special editions.
one was a cheaper mid-range version and the other the high end version.

maybe (LOOOONNNGG SHOT MAYBE) this is only one version, if i remember right the low/mid end sidkicks never had a flash.

wasn’t HTC was supposedly making a sidekick “twist” for the longest time, now suddenly we see a samsung phone.

    samsung sidekick 4G,
    HTC sidekick Twist 4G?

i can wish anyway cause i don’t like the sliding mechanism samsung has going there, the one on the old sidekick slide worked great, was sturdy and didn’t have exposed moving parts to break off.

    • Coqui

actually that’s not to far fetched, simply because back when the lx and 08 came out and even after the fact tmo DID in fact announce that their will be 2 SK’s available in the coming years. the first being the “low-end customizable” sidekicks with just the sidekick name (E.I. SK08) and the next is the “High-End models” which would be using the LX monicker (E.I. SKLX07, SKLX09) so heres hoping thats just the SK2011 and the SKLX2011 (or 2012) will be announced soon

This should had been by HTC it would of looked so much better

    • GeekyNerd2011

Your kidding right? Everything made by HTC nowadays looks the same. Everything made by them is starting to look bland and boring.

      • Anonymous

To some people EVERYTHING LOOKS THE SAME. Just wondering, how does the HD2 look like the iPhone?

        • AceKannon

I get what he’s saying. Be forreal, after the HD2 and Evo, all of their devices have the same facial expression in a way (ex. The HD7 looks like the Surround, Mozart,) and the G2 didnt even keep its swivel type screen from the G1 that people loved. THAT was the only phone that people accepted if they upgraded from a sidekick because of the touch screen/keyboard.

So yes, alot of therw phones do look too similar, especially these days. BUT, I will agree that HTC would’ve made it better quality in terms of the feel.

  • GeekyNerd2011

This looks pretty great. Im guessing its a 3.7″ screen, possibly super amoled plus. Front facing camera. Probably support for Tmobiles 4g network. And its samsung, which means the camera is most likely gonna kick some serious butt, so the lack of flash really doesnt matter that much (the vibrant doesnt have a flash and the camera is one of the best). And wasnt that the only bad thing about sidekicks, the camera always sucked! So samsung is actually great for this phone, a awesome screen, a awesome keyboard, and a brilliant camera. This could easily tag alongside the lg optimus 2x in terms of flagship material for this year. Hopefully we get more info soon, and a release date. Id be really interested in getting this phone

This could be an more impressive if the screen was wider. i like that it has a front facing camera and has android but what phone doesn’t. Every phone that is and has come out has android now.. so to me you have to bring something else to stand out in the android world. The Side kick has it’s history an innovation but lets take this to the next step by trying to be more creative. In the android world it has now come to innovation creativity its not just the OS anymore.

  • Awww, kinda making me nostalgic. Does the screen swivel? I was a sidekick user at the time of the fiasco and the whole time I was with T Mobile (sk2,sk3, sk LX 08), and I’m still bitter about the fact that I had to pay basically full price for a different phone, didn’t get a free one, no $100 discount or anything, and I was up for a full upgrade. Still had to pay $200 to pre-order the, wait for it, the Motorola Cliq *shakes head*. And now that the class action lawsuit has settled, we only get a $35 girl card or $17.50 check, haha, such a joke. I would have considered going back, it has Android, and I love the Sidekick form factor and keyboard, but I’m put off by Samsung making it, and I just got a G2 for free after Cliq problems, and had to renew my contract, and I don’t pay full retail price for any phone, hahaha. Plus, its not much of an upgrade from the G2, and I trust HTC way more when it comes to updates.

  • Cormega27

The thing that made the SideKick popular was the unmatched AIM program, and the relatively cheap Unl Data&Text plan. With the new network speeds, nearly any Chat program will be good. So if T-Mobile wants this to work, they need to keep the $19 SideKick add-on plan $29 SideKick stand alone plan. Other wise it’s just another unattractive smartphone (Cliq2) on T-Mobile.

    • T Mobile owns the name Sidekick, so they can release anything and call it a sidekick. And the servers that sucked were those of Danger, MS didn’t change the servers after that bought Danger

  • Danny

T-Mobile had a huge Sidekick fan base. True they were burned in the end but like a lot of things everyone loves a comeback.

This will be a great device for teens and young adults alike. It’s a T-Mobile exclusive, will be mass marketed to the young community but will be powerful enough to keep up with the mobile professional.

I’ll be honest: I’m not a Sidekick fan. Never have been. But I’m also not so dense to realize that it had a big following and I’m sure many will give them another opportunity.

T-Mobile’s marketing through Facebook/Twitter etc. will need to assure everyone that cloud based services are much more reliable than ever and contacts can be backed up via Google and T-Mobile as they do today with all Android devices.

I hope T-Mobile makes a really really big deal about this. Fuck all the haters.

I dunno about the rest of you but any phone i have had that has a flash ends up making the pictures look crap. so having no flash suits me fine.

    I love it!!!!

All I have to say is: Thank Goodness, it looks nothing like the phone image that was released last Thursday at the announcement of the Sidekick 4G.

  • I’m already sad… I was hoping the post last night on twitter wasn’t true, but it looks like it is being made by Samsung. Here I was hoping I’d get to go back to a Sidekick, but alas it is by Samsung. No updates, crap support, and all the other issues. Hell I bet the GPS won’t work too. :'( I just want to go on as say that the keyboard (even though it actually has 5 full rows) isn’t setup right like the Sidekicks of before. In fact it looks like they went nuts and added a bunch of useless functions. Like what is that on the Q,W,E, and R? Is that a Smiley Face Button? You know what’s even more stupid? I’ll probably end up buying it anyways LOL

Does the phone swivel like the sidekick should? it looks like it slides and if so its not a true sidekick and its junk

    • Coqui

      no swivel, only slide/hinge

      no swivel, only slide/hinge

    • KoffDrop VI

Why do people act like there never was a Sidekick with the sliding function?

      • AceKannon

because the slide was the most hated of them all. I for one wasnt too fond of it. It took getting used to, but this phone looks legit. I like it, so i’ll deal with it.

    • Youngt82

Well from the look of the screen standing arched up,it looks swivel, because if it was a slide then the main screen would stright up but this one looks like its more forward at us just like the sidekick lx

  • Anonymous

My finger is so big that I don’t think the mini keyboard is useful when you decide to use it with hands.

2) it is in fact a FFC on the top left, the light sensor is located on the bottom left and 3) it is NOT stock android. it IS a Custom UI just look at the 5th pic on the right side where it says “phone/apps/contacts. also upon further investigation it seems as they plan to market this as a “social” phone or “messaging” phone you have W,E,and R with dedicated smileys (smile, wink, and heart) also there appears to be a dedicated smiley button (bottom right) and finally the apps, one is “Group text” and the other is “messaging” with custom icons indicating what i said earlier of custom UI. thank you and i hope this helps answer some of your questions.

    • Frigadroid

Is it true no samoled? And 600mhz processor that’s what I been hearing. But don’t worry they will have another sidekick out by june with a led flash & hummingbird capable of hspa++ called sidekick f42 ;-)

You know, I would get this phone only because its a change of style from your typical style phone, phones are starting to look to much alike these days and this would be a nice change of pace.

  • Well good. It looks kiddish and samsung is good for making TOYS.( sorry behold, nexus s,and whatever)

    glad i got a G2

  • cliquser

yeah maybe like that other guy said this is the low-end sidekick and then a couple months after they’ll have the regular one made by sharp that’s way hott.

samsung probably couldn’t copy the sidekick hinge, and buttons for a legal reason.

With all this 4G talk, will T-Mobile increase their 5 GB cap on their unlimited data plans?

What’s wrong with streaming videos on your phone?

        • Guest

Nothing. You’re sold a smart phone that can stream videos and music via apps and websites. It’s perfectly fine for you to do so. On the other hand, T-Mobile can make your experience crappy by forcing data caps. It used to be unlimited then went down to 10 GB and now it’s 5 GB.

    • Gmo

No, Verizon and Sprint are the only carriers that actually offer unlimited data on their phones.

    • Rocket 2.0

I’d like T-Mobile to increase the limits for their webConnect plans. With an upcoming 42 Mbps modem, that 5 GB is going to just fly by. I’ve been looking at Verizon’s 4G mobile broadband plans. Since I constantly go over 5 GB on my webConnect plan, Verizon’s 4G plans seem to be a better choice. I’d rather have the option to pay for more data and Verizon’s overage fees aren’t too bad.

i have a rocket modem too. i’m getting tired of being throttled to 0.05 Mbps. it used to be 0.1 Mbps but I guess t-mobile wanted to be more of an ass and reduced it. i’m looking at clear’s unlimited 4G plan. from what i’ve read, it truly is unlimited. no sudden cut off cap. no throttle point. i’ll be switching in my next billing cycle.

Yes you do. It’s 5 GB. After that you get throttled down to max speeds of 0.05 Mbps (ie. dial up speeds). While it’s better than AT&T’s 2 GB cap plus overage fees. Verizon and Spring still offer unlimited data.

First for the people that don’t know this is a Sidekick this is what a sidekick looks like and what its always looked like so i don’t get why everyone is so surprised by the design if you don’t like it then don’t buy it that simple.. Second stop complaining about Samsung already we know you didnt get your precious update if you weren’t truly happy with the hardware the way it was when you bought then what makes you think it was going to be better five months later. Did you expect one morning you would wake up and all of a sudden your Vibrant would have a Front facing camera, Flash and the latest and greatest version of android, come on people you have no one to blame but yourselves and your impulse purchases .. Third stop asking why T-MOBILE doesn’t get the best devices if you have forgotten they are Fourth in the competition why on earth would the Manufacturers give them the best devices that’s like saying the person that finishes fourth in the race gets the best looking trophy come on lets be real you pay for cheap service so in turn you get cheaper devices if you don’t like it go somewhere else …

Why is it the defenders of scamscum never mention the gps our lag issues that were supposed to be fixed with the patches and update. If you want to be credible cover all the issues, otherwise you just look like a sapdung employee trying to cover up the facts. I give credit to the samoled screen and tv out but I need more from my phone than a media player like a android market and gps that work proper.
Last I checked here in America you have a right to bitch with out fear of bullies or the government unlike the republic of samsung. So if you don’t like it don’t read about samsdung products because someone is going to complain you can count on it.

I dont think the screen slides—exactly …look at the hinge and the groove spacing on the back; it may not be HTC Z hinge but its some similar, it looks like it will slide then “pop”..

check out the FFC position on the photos, unless it does a full 360, I doubt it’ll be a slider.

  • As a current user of the Sidekick LX 09 this is exactly what i’ve wanted…a sidekick with android…i dont need much to please:

    a smooth running phone
operating system with downloadable apps (wanna try angry birds hehe)
    touch screen
    sidekick steez
    the sidekick keyboard

as i look at these pics i get exactly what i need
my first phone ever was the sidekick 3 and since then ive gotten the sk lx and the lx 09 and frankly im kinda upset that everyone is bashing on this phone cuz i really like it…the ffc is a great addition and if no one else likes well good for me then i dont have to wait in line as long! =)

    • IM SO WITH YOU BRO!!! My first full keyboard phone was the Sidekick 2. Every phone I’ve had since then has been a Sidekick. I didn’t care what else came out, just give me a Sidekick. I told myself that if they EVER come out with another Sidekick, I’m jumping right back on it. Therefore, I WILL be leaving the MyTouch Slide and getting my baby back in my hands. IM SUPER EXCITED!!!

      • im definitely gonna miss the kick tho…sliding wont be too bad, still…

        SIDEKICK or DIE !

        • I couldn’t agree more. The swivel screen really defined that “sidekick” name, it kinda sounded like a kick when you opened the screen lol, maybe it’s just me that ever noticed that. It’s one of those distinctive features in a phone that really sets itself apart from others. I’m a little bummed that it won’t swivel, but whose to say this is the final product, right? In the end of it all, we just may have that swivel screen. Prototypes aren’t always the final product, now are they? ; ] We just have to wait and see……just sit back and wait….IMPATIENTLY!!!

  • no flash plus made by samsung pass

    • GEEKYNERD2011

how is that a automatic pass?? With samsung you get a better camera, something the sidekick line has always lacked was a decent camera, well now with samsung it’ll probably be one of the top. If you think samsung is gonna be stingy with the updates why not just get a ROM you like and shut the hell up? Lets not forget Samsung has excellent screen tech as well, may i remind you amoled, super amoled, super amoled plus. Yes lets please be begging for HTC, because we know they make good phones, THAT ALL LOOK THE SAME.

      • Anonymous

Many customers are pissed because Samsung is so unreliable when giving update. I know how great Super Amoled but not update previous device are big no no.

        • Andr01d

thats why theres the nexus S

        • Deff

best phone would be a nexus S 4g with 8mp and dual LED flash. and you can throw in the lowlight too with a little switch on the camera interface to turn it on or off. However, we’ll never see a PERFECT phone, cuz then no one would ever buy a new phone.

      • Anonymous

HTC phones all look the same??? Where the heck do you get that? And who are you to tell anyone to “shut the hell up” if they’ve been burned by Samsung in the past? I know I have, & it’s made me leary of trusting them again. Do you want me to “shut the hell up” too? Also, while I agree that the sidekick line’s cameras were junk, I didn’t find the night mode on my Vibrant to be all that it was cracked up to be in indoor settings. It was pretty neat outdoors, but even when there was plenty of light the camera sucked. How about you don’t snap @ people just because they have different needs in a device than you, mkay?

      • Wunako

tbh samsung phones now a days (especially the Galaxy S series) is a knock off of the iPhone, if you don’t believe compare them both side by side.. And they are shit when it comes to software.. no matter what something always.. ALWAYS goes wrong on samsung phones whether its updates, or other stuff

    • EDIT: not meant as a reply to shark just accidentally got posted here.

Im curious how this is a kids phone and say a mytouch4g slide wouldn’t be. Both would have a keyboard, assuming both would have ffc, and 4g. difference would be manufacturer and outward appearance for thew most part. Say this is for kids is just saying the mytouch slide was for kids. If you don’t like it don’t get it, but if you find a pfone that has most if not all the current features you are looking for, and you don’t like it because the button lay out some how makes it a phone for children, maybe you should just go to at&t and get an iphone, but first think of all the high school girls you see with one.

The Sidekick Slide manufactured by Motorola was a complete fail and offensive to real sidekick fan. I pray that it is swivel.

    • Aerofanbig

its not a swivel. you can clearly see the light sensor or FFC, whatever it is…is in the same position in relation to the rest of the screen closed as it is opened. Its a slider

    • Ruffryderg

Looks like the screen is a slider on a hinge like the G2.

  • gramminator

I truly miss my Sidekick because of all the data that it held. Photo ID, nickname, 5 phone numbers, 4 email addresses, 3 postal addresses, company, job title, birthdate & notes for 2000 contacts. I only had 1,270 contacts when I switched to a “smart phone” because my Sidekick needed replacement, but alas, there were no more. It also included a “to do” section, notes & a calendar (listed under Organizer). I’ve had the Sidekick, II, 3, Slide, 2009, but my last was the 2008. I’ve been a Sidekick fan for over 6 years and this is the only new technology that I’d stand in line for.

You can do a data/text only plan with any smartphone. Its primarily for deaf customers, but anyone can get it. Its $50 a month.

  • Chris Hutchinson

Did anyone notice there’s a Group Texting icon loaded on there? The icon looks a bit like the Messaging icon just to the right of it. That’s pretty bad ass.

    • Chris Hutchinson

The more i think about it, Sidekick has always been a huge messaging device. If that icon is correct, T-Mobile is kicking it up a notch with embedding group texting. That would be really cool. I wonder how they’re going to charge for it? I hope it means I can create a group where everyone’s reply is seen by everyone else and it better work seamlessly with the built-in SMS stuff. The group icon looks similar to the messaging icon so maybe it will.

  • rabba

  • looking at the back of the screen it looks like it works like my G2 the Z hinge

  • beastly

    -Love the keyboard.
-Bummed about the lack of swivel screen, but it’s just possible this slide screen opens and closes as easily as the swivel screen did. I’ll wait and see.
-I couldn’t care less that it’s Samsung making it; it’s not so much the manufacturer that delays updates as the fact that Android is skinned.
-I don’t even really care that it isn’t stock Android; updates will come when they come. If I neeeeed a newer version of Android, I’ll root.
-In fact, I’m bummed that it doesn’t look like the skin is very heavy. I was hoping for a more OG feel to the UI.
-I think a low-light mode is a fair trade for an LED flash. I’ve seen pictures taken at night with the Vibrant, and they smoke anything taken by a camera with a flash.
-Video chat will be a welcome addition to this phone. Tango, here I come!
-From Samsung I expect a cheap casing, a top-shelf screen, and a high-quality camera. Bummed about the casing.
-4G will probably mean 14.4 Mbps.

I might get this, but I might just hold out to see whether the long-awaited Twist comes out this summer. Swivel screen is part of what I’ve missed, and I suspect that if the Twist is in the works, we may see it drop with 21 Mbps download speeds, which would be worth waiting for.

    • Koffdrop Vi

I don’t see two Sidekicks being released within the same year. That’ll confuse consumers…plus, the Twist was simply rumor and this is fact with pictures to prove it.

      • Coqui

not true, tmobile released the sidekick iD, Sidekick LX, AND the Sidekick Slide all in the same year of 07 thats 3 sidekicks in 1 year and not to mention the mytouch slide and mytouch 4G that were released same year and not to far apart either. so why not 2 sidekicks in 1 year? i think its very possible

  • Saiefrcks

hating the look. doesnt look like its gonna make a difference in the sidekick world.

  • Guest

the more i see it its like ehh =/

    lmao…teenhobo and their crappy phones.

  • tmobeast

the early pics leaked doesnt look like this?!? just curious.

    2.1?
    Yuck!

  • RaccoonCityKid

If it doesn’t swivel, it’s not a sidekick as far as I’m concerned! That was the point of the side(kick) design. Granted, all I have ever used is a sidekick, but if this one doesn’t swivel, I’m not upgrading my (malfunctioning) sidekick 3.

    • Lex

I had a sidekick slide and it was awesomeeee. (even without the *flip* screen…. i love sidekick <3 cant wait for this!

      • RaccoonCityKid

Now see I really disliked the slide. I feel it took the fun out of the sidekick. Even so, I am deffinitly getting this phone when it gets released! Here’s hoping the next one does the “kick”

    • Actually, they are hiptops, all of them. T-Mobile is the only carrier in the world that removed the name “hiptop” and renamed them “Sidekicks”.

well samsung does make great cheap plastic devices.. but hopefully they at least remember to add LED notifications, and a bigger super amoled touch screen. if the hindge design is as good and reliable as the newer G2’s it might not be that bad

  • Tmobileinsider

This is not the final device. Calm down guys. It was a test dummy.

    • Your name made me giggle after i read your comment…i hope you’re right though lol

  • Argen809

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo why samsung koreans (no racist )make horrible things take kia and hyundai for example

  • syk0matik4201

Was interested but if its samsung, forget it. I will stick with my g2 and wait for g3. Samsung inhales testes. Innumerable amounts of testes. Don’t use samsung

  • syk0matik4201

Can’t censor people smarter than you, david. Learn that now.

    • “Beefy,” if you noticed I haven’t made any attempts to censor you since the screen name change which was my only intent in the first place. If you weren’t using a fake email before you would noticed that I had made any attempt to explain to you, incredibility politely I might add that I had a problem with the screen name and the extreme use of the vulgarity. You could have replied no problem David, I’ll change that name right up as you clearly did and I have no problem now.

I’m not attempting to block you, nor do I have any interest in censoring you or others, I do work to filter out some of the words that people use, especially those with a sexual reference such as three letter words that are used to describe people who like people of the same sex. There is no need for that on a site like this, so it’s fair for me to block it. More important, this is a private website so Freedom of Speech doesn’t apply, its considered private property and I reserve the right as the website owner to filter out anything of my choosing.

I not only ask but I expect people to disagree with me, that isn’t the point. The point is how its written and addressed. You are incredibly welcome to post on this website, just do it with a mind that I want others to be able to respond to you as well so continuously knocking the opinions of others means it’s in my best interests to remove someone who makes it so others don’t want to participate. That is my right and Freedom of Speech does not apply.

You are welcome to email me at david@tmonews.com and talk about it, as I tried to do with you earlier only so I could ask that you tone down the screen name.

This isn’t a matter of intelligence or not, I have no doubt that most of my readers are very intelligent people, I simply want to make this a place everyone feels welcome to participate and I can’t do that if someone is knocking everyones opinion.

Did you even notice that you syk0matik4201 name was getting approved without problem? I see you made a comment about Samsung right before you addressed me…did you see any problems with that getting approved? No…even so I’m well aware its you and has been since you made your Twitter handle available everytime you posted under “Beefy.”

So I apologize if you think there is a grand conspiracy against you, but there isn’t. Nor am I interested in a battle of wits or intelligence, post away to your hearts content. Just do it with an interest that I want this to be a place that others feel welcome. I don’t think thats to much to ask.

  • MT3GS

Sorry…. Looks too much like a toy… Absolute turn-off even though it has several of the things that I want in my future phone (FFC, slide out keyboard, 4G), but it still has the “kiddie phone” appeal the other sidekicks had… I’ll wait for the MyTouch 4G Slide – Thank you!

    my 2 cent$;
With a huge, spacious keyboard and a large screen this is a device difinitely geared towards the younger audience. My 14 year old daughter would absolutely love to have this in her 11k texts per mo. texting hands!!!!
I didnt see, but any word on possible release dates?
this phone looks great for this niche crowd especially if it has a fast processor, FFC, a great rear camera and a s-amoled screen…this could be a Tmobile shot of lightening!!! a great media device not only for younger texting generation, but those in the middle and…..beyond…. way to Samsung and Tmobile!
Mark my words…this will be a great year for TMO customers….ahhh finally!

im not sure when people say it’s gear towards kids and such because the last few sidekicks were well supports by plenty of celebrities and general adults then just “kids”…so i don’t like when people say it’s gear towards kids..sure there will be the younger crowd supporting it but not just them..!

    • Karlc

I’m in my 40’s, so when i say “kids” i am refering to the 13-30ish crowd and its just an opinion and im not too far off. i believe it is marketed towards “kids and young adults” and you back that up by including celeb’s who.. are.. probably…how old???? i really dont envision an adult in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond whipping out a side kick and going thumb crazy! not saying that there wont be either! i’m just stating that my daughter (14) and that age group would love this (especailly if it comes in multiple colors!)….which is to say i think their marketing is right on!!!
i also think you are correct. what i mean by that is if this device has a FFC that operates when the screen is slid out, i can image tons of people walking around and looking straight into this device talking like thier is no tomorrow!!!
      winner, winner, chicken dinner! ha!

  • Chrisangel13

reasons why i’m getting this phone:
    1) 4G
    2) 5 row keyboard
    3) Samsung has the best screens (Super AMOLED)
    4) wasn’t a fan of Sidekick OS, but i love Android
    5) Front Facing Camera

now i’m hoping this has 1.2 Gigahertz processor or a dual core processor
and decent battery life and i will get this day one. for all those who say
Samsung is crappy when it comes to updates, you’re right, but its possible to
root the device once the custom rom comes out

    • Blakkvi

Exactly! I’ve been waiting for a device with a qwerty keyboard and I’m not feeling the G2 that much ..hopefully this doesnt disappoint

  • LoSo

Yea chris those are some of the reasons im waiting for it also..remember this isn’t samsungs first 5 row..they also had the epic which i think is POSSIBLY a slightly better keypad then this but it’s still GREAT nonetheless! i don’t think it will be dual core but it could be 1ghrz..just my opionion..but like you said..rooting would be available so we can better our devices whichever way we want

    • VitaminG

do you know if this sidekick would flip or does it just slide?

  • Guest

The main thing i absolutely need from this device is for it to feel solid and not light and plastically.
and a great, huge screen is a definate must,

Other than those two things i think they should change it to a swivel screen if possible.

    Then id definately buy it

The reason I think people are saying this phone is geared towards kids is because “kids” are unbiased when it comes to new technology the don’t care about who makes it,what OS its running, what network its on,all they care about is functionality and how well and easy it is to use,,,,so yeah,,I geuss this easy to use and very fuctional looking phone is geared towards “kids” even those of us that actually never grew up.

Overall, I just hope it’s not just the name “Sidekick” on another lame phone that really has no innovation. After looking at the G2, and how poorly it was constructed, I hope that this phone does not fall to the same fate. However, when looking at the pics closer, it does look as if though it has an “arm” that raises the screen up and over off of the keyboard…really?
Besides that, I’m HOPING the main screen mimics the first sidekicks as it was quick and easy to get between screens and other “apps.” Android is great! Let’s just hope they are able to merge the traits of sidekicks past with the new advancements cell phones have made. Otherwise, it’s “just another messaging phone.”

As a sidekick user from the Sidekick 2 and still using the LX 09 right now I can’t wait to pick up this Android sidekick !! I was hoping it would be made by HTC but samsung will have to do. What really surprises me is why sidekick wouldn’t make this out to be T-mobile new Premier phone. From the looks of the pictures, (and I’m assuming) is they will make it an average smartphone amongst the high competition there is from the Droid, Iphones,EVO’s etc…. Sidekick was like T-mobiles Iphone back in it’s heyday this thing was used by adults, teenagers, celebrities etc etc !!! People recognize the brand and if T-mobile were to bring it back as a “premier phone” like they Mytouch 4g or even the G2..I would think if the specs lived up aka Dual Core processor, AMOLED screen, Running Android 2.3 or Honeycomb…T-mobile would have an instant hit on there hands again! Either way I will be supporting the new sidekick and will be getting it day one…LONG LIVE THE SIDEKICK!

    • unfortunately Google announced Honeycomb will be tablet only.

      • JAG

They did say for the time being it would be tablet only…but they are working on bringing honeycomb to future smart phones as well

  • Hannahllrose

I am SOOOOO HAPPY!!! I want my SIDEKICK 4G NOW!!!

    • JAG

I am in sync with your excitement!

  • guest

if its touch screen its gonna be weird…. the sidekick was a amzing phone and does not have to change the original factors of the first sidekicks it looks as though there trying to compete with other brands like at&t. But the sidekick was wildly popular and i hope that this one wont break… i mean really a kick stand? really? thats just unnecessary, but i am a 12yr old that loves sidekicks and has since i was at least 7. So i will be buying one an trying it out. :)

  • Chazlyn

If those keys on the keyboard are rubber — I’m out!! I have the sidekick LX and these rubber keys are awful! They are literally wearing away and I haven’t had this phone a whole year yet. I’ve been patiently waiting to upgrade to wait and see if I want to stick with the sidekick or move on to a different smartphone. I don’t know, the pictures aren’t doing much for me. But I guess they say don’t jude a book by it’s cover!

  • Dragonman3000

    When sidekick 4G come out!!!???

  • JAG

I’m waiting for a release date also! I know they said spring sometime but when! I want to Upgrade to the new sidekick ASAP!

    SK4G LOOKS MAD UGLY

  • TeetsMagee

I swear after so many Sidekick models and such a following, if the SK4G doesn’t have a camera WITH FLASH, I am going to LOSE IT! It is 2011, people! Put a damn flash on these cameras!

    • TallulahJac

hell even the lx 09 had a flash please don’t go backwards!

    • mattac

The SK LX-09′ has a flash

      • Shortypants1976

ya that was a great feature and it also had a better camera megapixel. there isnt a flash on the sidekick 4g witch means they totally downgraded the sk lower megipixels and no flash. well i am waiting untill march to get my sidekick and ill get it although all the reviews i look at make me think twice about it. i loved my sidekick lx 09 and miss it i wasnt planning on upgrading my phone after that and they forced me to. i got the nokia nuron and let me tell you never ever ever ever buy the nokia nuron have had nothing but issues with this phone. the only thing i liked about it was the apps but it has many issues. i got a new one comming in the mail we will see if it does the same. i cryed the day i got the letter they were stopping danger because the phone was me it was what i wanted with a smart phone. i loved the sk lx 09. RIP sk lx 09.

the “camera” in the front isn’t a camera its the BALL or maybe its censored, who knows but if you look closely to the image of the back there is the camera!

    • AidenDior

There is a Camera on the front. Look @ the top right corner of the screen.

      • Sarah

The thing in the top right corner is a logo! The top left is the ol’ light sensor. The middle right is the track wheel. The camera is clearly seen on the BACK of the phone.

        • Matt

your not looking in the right spot; on video calling phones, their are 2 cameras (front and back), the one in front is used to video chat while looking at your screen to see the other person, the one in back is used to take pics and videos while viewing what your capturing on your screen.

        • Tito!

wow these people are like brick walls.

I’ve sidekick 3 so slower and problem the wireless a network trouble and sent as slow 2 or 3 min. But this 4G Sidekick 4 as new one. It’s might be a tv channel, Game video, text messages, video chatter anywhere in these device. I’m Deaf has be objective that sidekick 4 the 4G wireless as well same Galaxy S some II what these point different insurance the prices. it’s national in server device…as good image artist deign the sidekick idea T-mobile technically.

I still hell sidekick 3 are very Bitch ass no tv channel and xbox360 add none, and None video chatter make me bored, bored lot 2 years contact insurance.

  • Give me digits, or give me death!

QWERTY+DEDICATED NUMBERS!!! This is all I want from an Android (well 512MB+[768MB] and 1GHz+ CPU also 5MP+).

Once it is “working fully,” I hope it drops VANILLA! I’d pay early termination w/verizon TODAY for Vanilla Android with this beast if the specs are up to par!

  • Joemsnicky Trasher44

i want a signature one, not the sLider one.. ..xDD

  • Eric Energy

As long as current sidekick users keep there unlimited data plan they get 50 bucks rebate when getting the new phone. The new phones cost? 150 :) so 100 with the rebate, it should be released before they shut off service to the old sidekicks using Microsofts servers , theirs a app in the store that will save all contacts to ur SD card thats free

  • Tabasco1tx

Yeah if its Samsung I’m not interested. No Samsung,no way.I’ll buy a iPhone first and jailbreak it and use it before I get another Samsung phone.

if anyone has facebook i will post a discussion about the new sidekick my friend and i are having a disagreement he says the new one is still catered to kids. I would love to get some input my user name is Faye chassis

    • Catered to kids? No. Built with a younger generation in mind? Absolutely. Perfect for adults who crave a hardware keyboard? Hell yes.

  • Shantel

I dont like it because the swivel screen is what made the sidekick unique and they took it away!

  • Bladeofhonor123

will there be a sidekick plan for t-mobile now?
