myTouch Slide Update Delayed By Two Issues

With news of the myTouch 3G LE and Fender editions prepping to receive their Android 2.2 update, plenty of myTouch Slide customers are left wondering when is their turn. Well the good news it’s being worked on, the bad news is we’re hearing exactly what kind of trouble is delaying the update. Apparently there are two problems holding up the public release:

1)   Wi-Fi calling doesn’t work 100% of the time, we’re not sure what that means, if calls are dropping or not starting at all on Wi-Fi but we know it’s holding up release.

2)   The OTA update is right now being directed to the wrong partition, which doesn’t have enough memory to process the update.

We received word that HTC is aware of both of these problems and is actively working on a fix. No release date time frame was given but as soon as we hear more, we’ll drop the news right away!

who told them to put a crappy ass CPU in the damn phone? i hate htc… i wish they sold me the vibrant when it first came out.

“who told them to put a crappy ass CPU in the damn phone?” That would be T-Mobile, not HTC.

There is no wifi calling in FROYO 2.2. I was told it did and then the bill came. Do not believe the hype.

According to T-Mobile, the wifi calling for Android uses your plan minutes. What was the surprise in your bill?

        • yyevoisadolt

Hey, I use my BB all the time and it DOES NOT use minutes. True wifi calling does not use more than a minute or two. Its just a handshake.

…if you still have the Unlimited HotSpot Calling feature on your plan, which T-Mo hasn’t offered to new customers for over a year now.

I still have it on mine, and all my WiFi calls are unlimited on the myTouch 4G.

Every time the wifi calling connects to wifi, it tells you it uses minutes.

I guess this is good news? I don’t even know anymore..

I was happy with my MTS when I first got it but it seems like the damn genius button that is ALWAYS running in the background is owning my battery big time (I hardly get a full day’s use out of my phone). Not to mention there is so little internal memory that after I installed a few programs (I would say about 8) along with a couple of games (I think it was 3-4) it said I had no more internal memory and so I had to uninstall everything.

Can’t wait for a new Android super phone to come out on T-Mobile that isn’t choppy and has a qwerty KB (yes I know most of you don’t like qwerty’s but I can’t live without one).

    • Tokinotaumblb

That’s what I said until I bought the myTouch 4G. I said that it would probably suck without a keyboard, but the screen is big enough not to really need one. I’m fine without it. The bigger the screen, the less you’ll need a keyboard. :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VRDZMEVWIUY37CP62QXHJ5CPIM hollybearcat

root your phone. the lack of space to installs was what inspired me to try. http://richard.gluga.com/2010/08/complete-guide-to-rooting-and-hacking.html has a good guide on how to do the deed.

      • Anonymous

Does rooting the Mytouch Slide phone/installing Froyo give you wifi calling or allow the http://kineto.com/ wifi calling app to work on T-Mo? That’s what I need to know.

If I *know* I can root the phone and get wifi calling, reliably — as I have and do with a BB and earlier T-Mo phones — then I will go ahead and shop for a second-hand Slide. I would rather have an “authorized” OTA load with wifi calling but the “official” T-Mo silence has almost deafened me.

        • Anonymous

Unfortunately, no one’s yet managed to port the WiFi Calling app to other ROM’s – they’ve only managed to take (carrier) ROM’s from other phones which already have the app and port the whole thing to a different phone, but thus far only when the hardware between the phones is similar enough to make the transition relatively simple (IE, the G2′s “vanilla” Android over to the myTouch 4G – both of which use the same processor [family]).

once again, more issues that could be avoided if manufacturers QUIT LOADING THE PHONES WITH BLOATWARE! Pure android phones have far fewer issues than sense/touchwiz/blur etc.

  • Dereck13

Root your slide it’s the best option. I root my slide and run really fast. I use cyanogen 6.1.1 Froyo 2.2.1. Don’t wait for tmo for the update. When you received the official update i run gingerbread in my slide.

    • Tyrone M Jackson

Rooting does not get you WiFi calling, which is the biggest reason to want 2.2. Yes, it does get you App install in the SD card, which is the second reason to want 2.2. Ironic that if T-Mobile had lot loaded the Slide with bloatware no one wants anyway, they’d have an easier time with OTA updates.

      • http://twitter.com/benmarvin benmarvin

Not rooting apparently isn’t getting you wifi calling either.

          T-mobile: Sure thing!
HTC: What about your myTouch Slide updates?

Atleast this is 10 times better than what samsung is doing.
They are taking wat too long, they dont tell us whats going on, and they keep getting our hopes up and crushing them.

Well…at least you guys had Native Android phones….I went a LONG time before my hd2 was in a position to REALLY run android. Good luck with the slide, and the mytouch’s. I’m loving my hd2 these days….

on the real, It’s awfully strange…HTC Desire and Incredible update to 2.2 came all around the same time. With the verizon’s droid X updates all around the same time. The MyTouch’s albeit much older and skinned out a bit more (again trying to replicate that sidekick) just did not get the updates it needed…And the hd2 is running windows mobile 6.5…still…

It’s time for T mobile to really have a discussion both internal and with their Vendors, it should be around a couple of things:

    1) HTC, I need better phones. Not just these cheaper branded phones, but better phones so we can get updates sooner. Thank you for the tmobile branded g2 and Mytouch 4g. These are good offerings, but We could have done our camera’s a little justice.

    2) Motorola, buck up or die. Defy was a good start, but come back with a cliq 2…my customers are really itching for something more.

    3) Samsung, REALLY? Great device, you took a step back with no flash, but AWESOME device. We need to be paid for the behold II….

    4) LG….Good start, let’s keep it going, give me the exclusive to your Phones..

    T mobile “phone picking team”

Senior VP says: ‘Ok, we were first to android and now ATT is done with the exclusivity of the iphone so they are going to pick up Android phones. Verizon is killing us and sprint has a monster seller with their EVO. Let’s REALLY get after LG and Samsung so we can get some really nice devices, let’s get into the design center with google and get the nexus s in the store. Let’s get a dual core monster and let’s spend a little money with apple and attempt to get on their calendar to at least talk about an iPhone. Reality states that our customers do want better phones and potentially and iPhone. Let’s get blackberry on our side again and push a torch of some kind….Yes, There, I said it…iPhone, Blackberry, Androids with LG and Samsung, I’m done getting sloppy seconds with HTC and Motorola….’

Old dude in the room with a RAZR says, ‘why, people want RAZR’s and sideckicks’…..he is immediately fired….

Its why I jumped over to WP7. I hated being behind on Android updates and I don’t feel like rooting my phone to upgrade. Plus when you flash a rom not everything works, and each rom has its own little quirks.

I didn’t want to give in to Apple and I hated searching XDA for tips, and browsing TMO News for news on updates. So even though WP7 has some minor drawbacks (in my opinion) I’m extremely satisfied with my HD7.

Wifi calling has worked great for me since it was introduced … on a BB 8900 for the last year or so. My GF will get a MyTouch Slide if and only if it has wifi calling … otherwise, she’ll leave T-Mo.

      • Anonymous

Tell her to leave. At this point I don’t know why anyone would even consider buying a slide.

        • Anonymous

Geography and budget and her own preferences are the key factors; She prefers to have only a cell phone and gets no or poor signal at home from other carriers other than Verizon. T-Mo w/ wifi calling is her most economical choice (she gets a good cellular connection starting about a half mile from house.)

And she just plain likes the Slide. She’s finicky, has tried hands-on others.

    • Jacob

It works on MT4G, i replaced my slide with a MT4G, but since even it have sense on it and i am not expecting an upgrade to 2.3 or 3.0 any time soon!! I guess if you have the patience for the market palce to expand, WP7 is going to be much better in the coming months!

I will never again recommend nor buy any mytouch phone again.

The mytouch brand has clearly become a low end brand, regardless of the specs. The Mytouch 4g will end up having to wait many many more months for Gingerbread and probably will never get Honeycomb.

I’m happy though, because I rooted my phone and I’m already using Android 2.2!!!

    • Mytouch Slide needs 2.2 ASAP !

I doubt it will ever get Honeycomb since its for tablets only….rolling eyes

    • Anonymous

Hey Joe what Rom are you using? Every time I get close to rooting my Slide I walk it back because I keep reading problems people are having with different things after rooting. I have thought about just taking the plunge and doing it, but I keep turning back lol.

      • Joe

I use Cyanogen 6.2, which is 100x better than the crap ware that came with the slide.

I have almost no problems with Cyanogen 6.2 stable for the HTC Slide!!!

To root, use xda-developers.com, as they have a very useful forums with a lot of topics about how to root your phone.

Considering my slide doesn’t always do normal calls 100% of the time, I really don’t care about that in terms of stopping an update. I just want this phone to function again, like it did before the august update…

  • http://twitter.com/squiggleslash s slash

I switched to CyanogenMod even though the initial Slide version was very immature and didn’t even support BT headsets. This gives you some idea how absolutely awful the stock ROM is – a very beautiful look, marred by awful handsfree support, a phone app that crashes if you change the orientation of the phone between calls, and a bizarre text messaging bug where if the phone has difficulty downloading a message, the “message” report will remain in place for weeks, with no way to clear it.

The hardware for the Slide is beautiful, but despite the look and the nice widget library, I just couldn’t stand it any more. CM6.1 fixes the major problems of CM6.0, giving you proper BT support, and non of the CM roms have the bugs mentioned above. Plus you get tethering, something every regular since the nineties supports! You do, however, lose Flash Lite and it’s difficult (but not impossible) to find a working Swype (alternatives exist in the Market however.) Personally, given TMo is chummy with Cyanogen, I’d recommend they at least provide an officially supported way to install CM6.1 on the Slide until they can come up with an official Froyo update.

As for me, when the official update comes… I’ll stick with CM. With a bit of luck, they’ll port Wifi calling across in a future point release (they have for other supported phones.) Shame Wifi calling doesn’t use something more common like SIP…

I got tired of waiting for froyo from t-mobile and finally rooted my mytouch slide with Cyanogen 6.1 a couple of weeks ago and I’m running it with ADW EX. I couldn’t be happier with it over all. It was almost like getting a new phone. At least it makes the slide tolerable. The phone app works – haven’t had one fc since I rooted! It cleared enough space on the hard drive so that I don’t have to keep uninstalling apps that I want in order to keep available space over 20mb. Only thing I miss is HTC flash. I don’t care about wifi calling or tethering either way.
I do wish I had waited a couple months to get the G2 or the MT4G, mainly for the onboard storage space, processor speed, and Froyo, even though I’m not crazy about either phone, but I paid $50 for the slide back in August. It’s not a bad phone for that price and Cyanogen makes it a nice serviceable phone. If I was forced to keep the stock ROM on it I probably would have given it to my 12 year old by this point. For those of you who aren’t afraid my advice is to “root baby root”!

I loved my MyTouch when it first came out, especially the promises of a speedy transition to 2.2, and I was a T-Mob employee at the time and we were hearing this!
I bought mine back in June, obviously I am still waiting, and I’m about done with waiting. Going to root this thing as soon as I can. I think the design is nice, I like the keyboard, the hardware is reliable (at least for me), but the software the T-Mobs shoves on this stuff is terrible! Good lord all I want is the ability to save to SD!

    1. Release a verson now w/o wifi calling and patch it once you get the problem fixed.

    2. Seems like there’s a simple solution there as well.

I was promised an update to 2.2 “soon” after I bought the phone in June. This is ridiculous. Of course I was also promised 3G also and I’m still waiting for that too.

own a mytouch slide and now a nexus 1. The mytouch slide which was released in mid june was promised the upgrade to froyo in the coming months. Now october comes rolling around and still no software upgrade just an upgrade to fix certain bugs, which arguably non existent. Overall that maintenance upgrade made the highly customized expresso sense UI run even worse and cause me personally to have to send my phone in three times for a replacement. I brought up october because on tmobile the G2 was released then if I remember correctly another htc made tmobile android phone. The G2 is launched running an almost stock android with the exceptions of a couple tmobile app. So no update for the mytouch slide. Why?? Tmobile and htc now have to sell the G2. Which is considered a hight end phone priced at 199.99, at the time the mytouch slide was priced at 179.99 a high end price for what evidently wasn’t a high end phone. Yes, one can say the G2 is a high end phone and the mytouch having froyo wouldn’t have effected sales of the G2. In the coming weeks the mytouch 4g gets leaked and is running android 2.2 (froyo) also tmobile and htc announce the whole mytouch line up will be updated to 2.2. Now november hits and still now 2.2 upgrade for the mytouch slide and the mytouch 4g running android 2.2 is released on Tmobile. The mytouch 4g is running the same espresso UI as the mytouch 4g, so common sense kicks in thinking the 2.2 update will come at least by the end of 2010 if not earlier. Again htc and Tmobile promise the software soon. Now its mid January and still no update because htc and Tmobile now have to sell mytouch 4g’s as until they become yesterdays news. Now the worst part is Tmobile devalued the mytouch slide to 129.99 a mid range price. The reason why I am upset is because when it was time to renew my contract in june when the mytouch slide was released the rep. pushed the phone as if it was a high end phone worth the 179.99 it coast then and the rep told me a software update to 2.2 was coming. After the phone having to be retuned a total of four time 3 of those returns due to the software I was bought myself a new nexus 1 online from a craigslist posting. My whole point is that updates being pushed out in a timely manner is depends on how the manufacturer in this case HTC and carrier collude to send it out in time or delay it in my case about 7 months to sell other phones. In the end it all boils down to does it benefit the carrier and manufacturer to push out the upadte. In the case of the mytouch slide it didn’t. The sad part is now the whole mytouch line is updated to 2.2 or in the process and a relatively new phone thats is less than a year old doesn’t have the update. Tmobile and htc blame it on the fact that wifi calling doesn’t work on the update and it was sent to the wrong partition on the phones memory. BS they are trying to bleed sales of the mytouch 4g dry until a new phone comes out on Tmobile to take its status of flagship device. So if you want the latest update empty your pockets and buy a nexus phone unlocked and unsubsidized.

David have you received any updated info on the 2.2. update for the mytouch slide? The mytouch slide wasn’t a bad phone even though I myself had issues with it. The latest one I was sent in late october works fine. It’s a shame the it’s being treated like the middle child so to speak and getting no attention form Tmobile

I’m in same boat as many of you. Bought the Slide in June, was told the 2.2 update was coming “soon.” Not sure when soon is, but I’m still waiting, and meanwhile, the memory issues on the slide are insane. I have very few apps, but am constantly getting messages that I am low on memory, sometimes can’t even send text or go on internet because of it. What bullshit. And when I called t-mobile, was told that I could upgrade to a different phone at full price. huh?

Yeah it is bull that they sold the silde at a premium price when in reality it’s a mid range phone. Yes 2.2. brings apps to sd but it depends upon if the app has that feature or not. To clear memory clear the cache memory from your browser as well as the history. Also delete your old text messages.I know on my slide when you try to delete a thread with say over 500 messages it takes a long time and the messaging app crashes. Last tip is to get rid of games you really don’t play. Don’t buy a phone because of a promise to a software upgrade. I know in June the slide was the best android offering on tmo. I had in total 4 slides. 3 of which having software issues. You want upgrades buy a nexus

Everyone is in the same boat. Me and my wife have mytouch slides and well she is fine with hers but mine i’m bored with now and it starting to mess up with running slow “lack of memory”. I’m at the point of either rooting mine or just purchasing a Samsung Vibrant from craigslist and selling the mytouch slide. So does anyone know how much longer for the update? and is the Vibrant worth the money cause i’m not sure if I want another HTC again.

the vibrant is getting updated to 2.2 tomorrow. Regardless of the 2.2 or 2.1 its still a great phone the screen is beautiful and has 16gigs of on board memory. If you are looking for a full physical keyboard buy a G2 which is now free online. I feel you dude but buy a phone that your happy with the software its running regardless of software updates.

Tell you whats bull, the fact on t-mobile website they advertise it having android 2.2, wi-fi calling, and mobile hotspot all of which is not on the phone. I like my phone, the only downfall is my phone running out of memory, all I have is pics and about 40 apps which majority of those are pre-installs. Be nice to have it, though I have a feeling it will be the last update.

Hey, David! Any update to this rumor? Inquiring minds want to know.
