First Look At Android 3.0 Honeycomb

In the heat of all the videos released by T-Mobile yesterday regarding the LG G-Slate, I had hoped to post this first look at Android 3.0 Honeycomb along with them. If you follow our Twitter stream you’ll know Wi-Fi signals out here are at a premium so this video kind of got lost in the mix but if you’ve been following Android 3.0 this video is worth a look! If you’ve been looking for a true Android Tablet interface, your prayers have just been answered.

Okay…someone help me out there: Is Honeycomb only tablet-based or will we see the OS in smartphones? Or is Gingerbread for smartphones, as Honeycomb is for tablets?

I don’t think it’s ONLY for tablets, I just think it was designed with larger screens in mind. I imagine you’ll see 3.0 on smaller devices, but some of the things will be altered because of the smaller screen. I would say that devices 5 or maybe 7 inches and up will receive the tablet OS and devices smaller will receive a custom 3.0 designed for the smaller screens.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks. I’ve been wondering, especially in the wake of all these newer tablets on display at the CES [it seems] running the 3.0 OS.

Andy Rubin said that Honeycomb will work for both smart phones and tablets. Honeycomb apparently switches depending of what kind of device it is bring used on like for example the gmail app. Honeycomb knows that if it is on a tablet then you can use the layout we saw in the video with the big multiple windows on the side and what not. If it is on a smart phone it knows you don’t have as much space do it so it will switch the smart phone gmail app. Maybe it’s not done automatically but manually depending on what device it will be installed but you get what I’m saying…. That is what I understood when he was explaining how Honeycomb works using the motorola tablet if I’m not mistaken in a conference not long ago. You can probably find the video on you tube. It’s the one where he also demos the new google maps with the three d buildings….

I have a feeling google is just waiting to deliver the bad news about 3.0
    and phone compatibility.
google has adhd and can’t seem to focus.

yeah you gotta wonder how much 3.0 will be dumbed down in order to work on a phone. Seems like it will be a new breed of Android more so than a plus .7 update to Gingerbread.

Why would they need to make a phone version of this anyway? I would prefer they stay separate versions and not port over. Just because it’s “new” doesn’t mean it’s a necessary upgrade.

I totally agree. Google has 1up’d Apple by making a real Tablet OS now they should just keep it as such. The good thing is though that whatever Google decides to do with Android it will probly be great.

Playbook all the way. Android is starting to become like the iphone every one wants a android phone now and it looks like all the new phones will be android this year. One day a phone will be just a phone because android is becoming the norm now.

Yeah, I’m rooting for the Playbook and I’ve not owned anything RIM. Ipad, too big and clunky for me. Do like my G2 a lot and don’t mind Android, but the Playbook just impressed the sh*t out of me.

    • k-mack

the Playbook? you are kidding, right?

  • carnegie0107

I’m glad this isn’t any more impressive than it is, or I’d need new pants. Can’t wait for Honeycomb and CyanogenMod 8!
