Samsung’s Vibrant GPS Fix

Still having problems receiving an accurate GPS location with your Samsung Vibrant?  Well, Samsung thinks that they have the answer finally.  After trying that old workaround which didn’t seem to help much, they have a new offering.  They have created an app called GpsRestore by Samsung Mobile that will do as it is named, hopefully.  So, for all those Vibrant owners out there, search “GPSRestore” in the market, download it, launch it and let it do its thing.  After you are done with that, make sure to leave your experiences in the comments!

I just want my GPS to stop rebooting my phone when I use it.

    • Lavasoap

That sounds like a bigger issue, Id get a warranty exchange while you still can.

    • coolcat

Thats my problem too! Unfortunately I’m off the return window.

I have the same issue I think, my vibrant reboots randomly. I hate this stupid phone and I am past my return.

it called GpsRestore by Samsung Mobile in the Android Market… and it’s supposed to work for the Captivate as well.

  • coyboy

so far so good, it’s definitely pinpointed my location right now… i’ll letcha know after i travel around a bit after work.

Great, now only 12 hours until we get the Froyo update, right???? After all, it’s the end of the end of November.

  • Geniuz

It still doesn’t work. This GPS fix is a joke … T-mobile and Samsung need to come together and compensate all those that purchased this lemon.

Wow, ONE issue makes it a lemmon?? I guess that makes my wife a lemon too then.. hmmmm No one is compensating me for her!!

      • Guest

What? I have to compensate her every time I stop by dressed like the UPS man.

      • Geniuzmusic

ONE issue???? The GPS didn’t work when it was released … it hasn’t worked after the GPS update … and it still doesn’t work after their “GPS Restore” application is used. It’s a repeated issue, in 5 months of it being released they still haven’t found an answer for it. It doesn’t work as advertised. Why should I accept a device that will not do what it’s supposed to? With no fix in sight, yes, it is a lemon.

As far as your wife goes … that sounds like a personal problem. You knew her issues before you married her.

        • Yeah its ONE issue. It does 99.9% of what its supposed to do. Gps is the only true issue with it.

        • ECA1993

There are people with phones waiting for a basic Android upgrade. At least we’re getting that in a month.

Dude, every smartphone these days have at least ONE glitch their owners hate. Even those beloved, boxy looking DROIDS.

Find me a perfect, unflawed phone and I will retract this comment.

  • Drew

    @ Geniuzmusic
Yeah right dude. There will be no compensation lol. Ask all us Behold 2 owners..

    • Geniuzmusic

lol I feel you man … I’ll never buy another Samsung device.

    • Actually if you talked to t-mo customer service about it you would know many got to get an upgrade to the vibrant for free or some other device or if you returned it within your 14days or 30 days then thats your compensation. Obviously if you had it past your 14 or 30days return period you were satisfied with it.

      • Also I am an ex-behold 2 owner so quit complaining.(I lost mine having fun) and no thats not code for I got rid of it on purpose. It was good while I had it only wish was for it to get updated but oh well Nexus S here I come, the perfect match. Samsung hardware with Google doing their software.

  • airryana

i’m in the process of downloading it now – fyi, nothing comes up when you search for GPSSamsungRestore unless you put a space between each word. in my android market, it’s labeled GpsRestore.

  • Barleywitt

It seems to work fine. Pin pointed my location, which I will not disclose to you. The question is, what do we do with this app from now on?

My GPS works much much better after the last OTA update, locks in fast. BUT!!! the problem is my battery has taken a LARGE toll after the last OTA update any fixes you guys that have been affected by this have found??

    YES, i have:
    APPkiller
    tried WiFI and GPS off

    • JakeMG

I found that my battery was being drained by an app called Download Manager, which is what your phone uses to check for OTA updates. You have to go to settings>applications>running services>then stop that service. If you reboot your phone, you will have to stop it every time. However, this brought my battery life back to normal.

    • Walt8181

Best thing to do is to “root” my friend. The answers are from XDA Developers and not Samsung. LOL. I am running a stock Froyo ROM and flashed a battery kernel. My phones can actually last 24 or more hours with light use but I can average 12-14 with web surfing and etc…much better than the touchwiz 2.1.

From what I can tell, it doesn’t look like this is a fix but instead just modifies the GPS settings that you can do yourself already in the Settings menu.

My GPS works like a champ and never fails me after JI6 update via Samsung Mini Keis

My Vibrant’s GPS works great. Tip: don’t mess with LBSTestMode settings. They do more harm than good. Even if you get a fix it after you mess with LBSTestMode it will lose the fix eventually or be horribly inaccurate. That said, my phone navigates and locks onto my location perfectly. not sure of the problems other people are experiencing but I’ve tested my GPS a lot, NO problems with any apps. Google Navigation works properly, Google Maps, Latitude, etc.. if it isn’t I’d say your phone is broken

7 meters at my house right now.

  • Slikk

I just installed and turned the gps on. It locked my position quicker than it used to before. And Im on 3rd floor and had to take the phone to the window. I think the gps lock is an improvement. will report back when im on the road.

  • Steve

All this does is restore the settings back to the defaults, which if they had worked to begin with, people wouldn’t have had to tinker. This is not fix

  • Ericf323232

I dont know how you guys get sub 10 meter accuracy what method are you using to see that lowest I get is like 18-19 accuracy while my g1 gets 10 below

  • Mjm8408

looks like its working well, good stuff Samy!

  • JakeMG

Meh. I took my Vibrant outside and it locked very fast, but told me that I was about two blocks over from where I was actually standing. That won’t do.

  • It didn’t work when I first got the Vibrant, but after the JI6 update, gps works fine. Though at intersections if the signal isn’t strong enough, it gets a bit wonky.

  • Seems to work great for me. I always had an issue where when at intersections it would tend to float and wanting to reroute because it was floating around. Well after this fix no more issues with that. Also had a issue with sometimes it not being real accurate seems dead on now. Way to go Samsung.

  • JeremyT

This fix doesn’t help me any. However, I’ve got a workaround I’m about to try:

Step 1: Post “WTT Samsung Vibrant for MyTouch 4G” on CL
Step 2: Trade Samsung Vibrant for MyTouch 4G
Step 3: Never buy another Samsung phone, ever

There are clearly software issues with this device, and it’s clear that some things can be done to help the GPS get a lock more quickly. However, even when I’m getting a quick lock due to fixing AGPS, the accuracy is *terrible*. If I’m going any substantial distance, Google nav will at some point invariably have me on the wrong streets, facing the wrong direction at lights, etc.

It’s amazing to me they shipped a modern smartphone with this kind of crappy GPS.

    • Bob

      JeremyT,
I did exactly what you did and never looked back. The 4G is a really nice piece of hardware, good GPS and no lag.

are they going to update the vibrant to have wificalling?

  • now_onTMO

    go to lbstestmode..

do not change anything in the settings..

run some test, the performance test and let it find and lock on satellites…
(i eve did the cno test, sensitivity, antenna test)
after running those test, run the sensor data and
you will see that the compass has improved and gps locks on quickly..

    or is it wishful thinking?

After countless attempts, never a GPS connected and I get a message to contact a service center. Rooted/LagFix and already running JI6 in DFW Texas area…

  • Worked for me. Need to go outside for open sky. Locked in my coordinates and altitude. Using GPSTest, I got accuracy within 25 feet. Will try Google Navigation later.

    So far so good.

  • rev2redlineguy

Doesn’t work. I tried the GPS and it locks on a satellite but my current location is way off! Just for kicks I loaded up my old myTouch, turned on the GPS and wham…it locked on a satellite and gave me a more accurate location of where I was (maybe off by a few feet or so). That bites! My old trusty myTouch works way better than this so-called “state of the art” smartphone from Samsung.

I loaded JI5 when it appeared on Kies, never got JI6. The GPS didn’t work at all prior to JI5, now it takes about 30 sec to lock on but seems to work well. This update doesn’t seem to do anything for my Vibrant, about the same performance.

Hopefully having JI5 doesn’t prevent me from getting Froyo

I downloaded it and it works fine here in St Louis. It was quick and worked once I was out of my workplace.

  • Anonymous

mine finally worked. took about 90 seconds to completely lock in. however its still a little off; it initially picks up my location to a “t”….then all i have to do is move my device slightly and it puts me at least 50 yards away from from my original spot.

  • Scokes7

yep it improved my gps to 10 meters

  • Devin

Yeah, totally bricked my phone. Can’t turn phone on, loops on the Vibrant screen AND won’t boot into recovery. I’ve even tried to get into download mode through the charging screen, but when I plug the phone in, it freezes and never gets to the green battery meter.

  • Scared to touch this with a 9 foot pole. My phone has been fairly perfect since the update came out. Scared if I touch this I’ll break it.

  • Mine is working great. I used to have issues with my location bouncing while in navigation. Now its stays locked.

  • Tstaples

Bricked My Phone. Call Tmo PDA support, sending out a replacement under warranty today….. Uggh,….

  • Xman1457

This recovery has made a tremendous difference. No more GPS freezing or searching forever. Connecting and displaying direction in less than 10 seconds. Sweet!!!

  • Agreed Google Navigator is no longer freezing my phone either. I used to have to pull the battery few times I used Navigator because it would lock up the phone completely. I’ve used it several times now since running this fix and it’s not locked up onces. Very, very cool.

    • Anonymous

that’s good to know. had the same issue with the lock up.

  • Vibrant Addict

I’m kind of weary of doing this. Last update from TMO ‘fixed’ the GPS as it takes about a minute to lock on when out in the open. I just don’t want to make it worse. :

Stupid Samsung making me fearful of making my device WORSE. To all the speculation of getting 2.3 before everyone else, I SERIOUSLY doubt that will happen. I’m even doubtful we’ll even see 2.3 on this phone thanks to Sammy/carriers.

    • Simona

… Uhm, samsung is going to launch the first 2.3 device… why wouldn’t samsung make it available for all of their devices.

      • Daveboyd123

….are you serious? You can’t be serious. That’s some flawed logic.

      • Apk

By that logic, you should expect them to actually get Behold II updated to 2.1 as well which is never going to happen. Found out after that fiasco, that Samsung have a poor reputation for post-sales support – once they get you to buy their phone, don’t expect a lot of upgrades for it :(

  • Cdodds Cd

Well, the app did not help me at all. I called tmo pda support and they put me on a list to receive the 2.2 update. If that doesn’t fix it, I will get a replacement. If the replacement sucks I am off contract. Do the math.

  • Mee Chee

Fixed my issues and works perfectly now.. now i dont have to spend money on a new phone!

  • Nolucknoskill

Um.. well it does work, but for the fix to take place, you have to be outside in an area where the GPS can easily spot you. For example, I activated the GPS Fix in my room, and for awhile it didn’t work because the GPS could not track me. But then I went outside (no further than 20 ft.), and onto a main road, and then poof! GPS gets fixed. So for those who can’t get the software to work, why don’t you all try doing it again on a main street that can be easily spotted on a map.

Otherwise I took it for a test run and it seems to be working pretty well.

  • Mccormack123

My co-worker did that and it bricked his phone when he went to restart it after the installation.

This is a definite improvement to the gps functionality, but still not 100% reliable, & initially caused my vibrant to do some very funky/annoying things, so I had to go adjust my Task Killer settings, & now it’s pretty much ok (most of the time). It still is a bit quirky at times. But I STILL haven’t received the JI6 update, even after calling Tmo Tech Support & wasting a ton of time on hold, talking to several staff, etc. I’m HOPING that froyo will resolve the gps issue once & for all, as well as improve the browser speed. Please, Tmo. . . I mean, really, ok?!?

  • Azjack520

If it didn’t work at first, wait a day or so and try again. I downloaded the app and ran in repeatedly on my Vibrant yesterday. It would go through the first two messages okay, and then list the word “fail” on the third part — followed by a suggestion to try again under “open sky”. Going outside didn’t help. Then I saw this article and tried again tonight, and it suddenly worked in just a few seconds and inside.

I have no idea why that happened, but it was worth waiting 24 hours and trying again. Just saying, it worked for me.

  • Jeff

The first update seemed to fix my gps issue, but I ran the restore just to be sure and it broke it again :(. If your GPS works after the update, do not run the restore.

  • spongie253

Wow samsung is slick. I applied their new fix and it made my GPS worse. It was working with the OTA fix now it thinks I’m 3000 miles away. Then i tried to go back and do the hack from XDA and it won’t let me into LBS test mode. They must have locked it down. I HATE THIS!

I was actually considering getting a Samsung Vibrant… does anyone know if $189.99 is a good deal?

    • Arfur

No it is not, Bestbuy has it for 99.99.

      • Rhroney

Costco has it for free as of december 15, 2010 if you get a two year contract

    • Rhroney

it’s a good deal if it’s in good shape. I bought two for around $300 each that were in excellent shape.
Phones are working well but not flawlessly. I’m pretty happy

  • Lost2you161

works…. sorta……. once or twice…….then not at all

  • Wcsaz

My Vibrant GPS indicated I was off a major interstate in Indiana and I live in Scottsdale AZ. I downloaded the patch turned on GPS first went outside and then ran the app. Within seconds it picked me up where I live!

  • Ray

I will probably never buy another samsung phone. The GPS on my wife’s moment was horrible, the GPS on both our vibrants is horrible, and their flagship phone has been running outdated software for months. Yea it has a pretty screen, but everything on my old HTC Hero worked flawlessly. The great specs on the Galaxy S phones are useless if they can’t make everything to work right. I’m sticking with HTC, or maybe I’ll give Motorola or LG a try. But I recommend staying away from Samsung if you’re concerned with more than a pretty form factor.

    • Buaioeae

Don’t whine here, just download this fix as I did week ago. Your GPS will be fine.

  • Gordo

Install fixed everything in a minute for my TMO Vibrant 2.2 Froyo. I can now get my precise GPS location when I activate Navigation APP from INSIDE my house. Glad to have it back up and running better then ever. Not really sure why I ever lost it, I don’t mess around with the phone settings all that much and it stopped working prior to the 2.2 Froyo update and continued to not work after the update.

  • Erik

It was working fine on 2.1. I upgraded to Froyo 2.2 and I can’t get a GPS anywhere. With the app, still can’t get GPS.

  • Ptpck27

Appears to have worked for me too. For those of you complaining that it doesn’t work, make sure you have GPS enabled on your phone. My first attempt failed. I realized I had GPS off and I went ahead and turned WiFi off too. Tried it again and it worked. True test will be next time i’m on the road. Thanks

  • OMG…thanks Samsung wanted me to do a hard restart for no reason.

  • Jspiegle

Works like a champ now. grabbed my location from inside my office within a few seconds. Since I upgraded to Andoird 2.2 the Vibrant would not find a GPS signal 95% of the time. I am very pleased with this update.

  • Ray

My first go-around didn’t work (it asked me to move to open sky and try again). After moving my hand out beyond the balcony, while dangling my phone 11 floors above the pool deck, the GPS signal picked up in a few seconds. I also turned off the phone’s WiFi connection, maybe it was the WiFi, maybe it was threatening to drop it into the pool… either way it worked great!

Late to the party as always, but I just added this and now I have an instant satellite lock inside my house when I couldn’t get it outside before. This is on top of Froyo FWIW.

This only partially fixed the problem.. My gps will get a lock in seconds, but I still jump all over the map. Even when I’m not moving. It’s not accurate..starting to think there isn’t such a thing as high quality anything anymore…

It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t work. I don’t think there is anything fixes for this pos phone. Samsung needs to Get it straight. I was outside trying to lock a signal and it told me to get to an area where there’s open space. Wtf is that. And Samsung made that app. Pathetic.

Fantastic.  I’ve been trying to fix my wife’s phone with updates and the old workaround, but this worked.  Thanks.

at least the GPS finally works. It still takes about 3-5 minutes to connect which is better then never connection as before.

Wow. I just went from hangs-the-phone to locks-on-almost-instantly. Good news!

  • I have GPSRestore installed and GPS works ok in my area (St Paul, MN). But recently I took a trip to Montana and could not get GPS to work there at all.

are you sure you just were not in a good coverage area? gps still relies on cell phone towers, which montana has few of.

This app also works for the Captivate!  I tried everything up to this point.  I have my 3G turned off to save battery but when you run this turn off wifi (if connected to your home router), make sure 3G is on and then run the app.  I instantaneously get a fix and I find more satellites than before.
